Minnesota-based singer/songwriter Tony Cuchetti brings us the lone 1995 release by grunge supergroup Mad Season, 'Above'. When Pearl Jam guitarist Mike McCready and journeyman bass player John Baker Saunders met at rehab, they decided to form a band and brought in Layne Staley of Alice In Chains primarily because they thought he would benefit from being around some clean musicians. With Screaming Trees drummer Barrett Martin rounding out the band, they crafted this dense record of slow-burning jams that is as bleak a document of drug addiction as you're ever likely to hear. Songs featured in this episode: River Of Deceit (Live at the Moore, Seattle 1995) - Mad Season; Lay It On Me, The After - Tony Cuchetti; The Rooster - Alice In Chains; Nearly Lost You - Screaming Trees; Wake Up, X-Ray Mind, River Of Deceit - Mad Season; Better Man - Pearl Jam; I'm Above, Artificial Red, Lifeless Dead - Mad Season; Hunger Strike - Temple Of The Dog; I Don't Know Anything, Long Gone Day - Mad Season; Voodoo - Godsmack; November Hotel - Mad Season; Riders On The Storm - The Doors; All Alone - Mad Season; Stubborn Bones - Tony Cuchetti

PART ONE:Paul and Scott reflect on returning to large-scale concerts, and talk about their recent experiences seeing Paul McCartney and Pearl Jam.PART TWO: Our in-depth conversation with Ann WilsonABOUT ANN WILSON:Four-time Grammy nominee and Rock & Roll Hall of Famer Ann Wilson is best known as the lead singer and co-songwriter for the band Heart, which she and her sister Nancy formed in 1973 and propelled to rock superstardom. One of the pioneering female-fronted rock bands, Heart's self-penned classics include “Crazy On You,” “Magic Man,” “Dreamboat Annie,” “Barracuda,” “Little Queen,” “Heartless,” “Straight On,” “Dog & Butterfly,” and “Even It Up.” In the mid-1980s they reinvented themselves as mainstream radio hitmakers with a string of successful singles, including “What About Love,” “Never,” “These Dreams,” “Nothin' at All,” “Alone,” “Who Will You Run To,” “There's the Girl,” “All I Wanna Do Is Make Love to You,” and “Stranded.” As Heart, Ann and Nancy Wilson have sold more than 35 million albums worldwide. Since 2007, Ann has released three full-length studio albums and two EPs. Her most recent, Fierce Bliss, which was released at the end of April, is her first solo album to include original material.

SUMMARY:Our guest is Jerry Cantrell, the founder, lead guitarist, co-lead vocalist, and primary songwriter of Alice in Chains. The nine-time Grammy nominee has written more than 20 Top 10 hits on the Billboard Mainstream Rock chart, has sold more than 30 million albums worldwide, and was named one of the “100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time” by Guitar World magazine. His latest solo release is the critically-acclaimed Brighten. PART ONE:Paul and Scott chat about their high school years, the Seattle explosion, Chuck Klosterman's new book, and why certain bands from the much-hyped grunge movement evolved and survived when others burned out. PART TWO:Our in-depth interview with Jerry CantrellABOUT JERRY CANTRELL:Nine-time Grammy nominee Jerry Cantrell is best known as the founder, lead guitarist, co-lead vocalist, and primary songwriter of the hard rock band Alice in Chains. Signing with Columbia Records in 1989, the Seattle-based band got lumped into the grunge explosion of the early 1990s when Cantrell-penned classics such as “Man in the Box,” ”Would?,” “Rooster,” and “Down in a Hole,” took over MTV and Billboard's Mainstream Rock chart. But Alice in Chains was always about more than Seattle hysteria. By the middle of the decade they'd released three multiplatinum selling studio albums—Facelift, Dirt, and the self-titled Alice in Chains—as well as three EPs, including Jar of Flies, which went triple platinum and became the first EP in history to top the Billboard 200. A string of Top 10 singles, including “No Excuses,” “I Stay Away,” “Grind,” “Heaven Beside You,” and “Again” established the band as rock radio mainstays. Plagued by struggles with addiction, Alice in Chains took a hiatus from live performances before regrouping in the spring of 1996 for an appearance on MTV Unplugged. The subsequent album hit the Top 5 on the Billboard 200 and was certified Platinum. That same year the band found themselves on another extended hiatus, leading to the release of Cantrell's debut solo album, Boggy Depot, in 1998. The death of Alice in Chains singer Layne Staley in 2002 could have meant the end of the band, but they eventually regrouped and released the Gold-selling Black Gives Way to Blue in 2009, and the follow-up album, The Devil Put Dinosaurs Here. Both releases hit the Top 5. Alice in Chains has continued to release new music as recently as 2018's Rainier Fog album, and the band has now sold more than 30 million records worldwide. In addition to his first solo release, Cantrell put out the album Degradation Trip Volumes 1 & 2 in 2002. His most recent release, the critically-acclaimed Brighten, is his first solo record in almost two decades. Named among Guitar World magazine's “100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time,” Jerry is also a formidable songwriter. More than 20 of his compositions, both with Alice in Chains and as a solo artist, have hit the Top 10 on the Billboard rock chart.

My guest today is Jonathon Evison, New York Times best selling author. Adult content, lots of candor and I stopped beeping about 1/3 of the way through… Jonathon wrote All about Lulu and Lawn Boy, both of which I read and recommend, and he just released Legends of the North Cascades, which I have bought, but not read yet, its on the list! He has another half dozen books and his latest, small world, is due out next year. We talk about his process and inspirations, generational parenting and do a deep dive into Seattle Music and some Seattle sports. He sings his rejected original jingle for the Seattle chamber of commerce. He once kicked someone out of his band, who later help form, and is still a member of Pearl Jam… I guess it worked out for both of them. A little "adult" language, and less than perfect sound due to the zoom - but a fun, nonstop ride!

We all need a little help sometimes, especially when it comes to journeys of personal development. Whether your goal is to be happier or to find fulfillment or purpose, it can be pretty tough to figure out how to accomplish your goals on your own. In those circumstances, many people turn to a life coach. Like a therapist, a life coach is someone who can help you identify strengths and weaknesses and overcome obstacles holding you back. Our guest this week has often been referred to as “The Queen of Seattle Music.” For years Carrie Akre fronted the bands, Hammerbox, Goodness, and The Rockfords...all of which had huge followings, especially in the Pacific Northwest. Now her career has shifted from entertaining and inspiring fans through music, to inspiring and motivating people through life-coaching. We talk with her about how her musical journey was just the start of a path to helping others. As she writes on her website, “Everyone goes through moments when it important to find their truth, facing fears and make a plan to do/be who you want. Change is absolutely possible and you don't have to figure it all out alone. You deserve and sometimes need support as you discover and plan out your next steps toward what you desire!” In this episode learn more about how vulnerability and authenticity helped launch her to the front of the stage in front of adoring fans, and how her experience can help you live a more fulfilling and authentic life yourself. Join her Facebook Group to learn more about upcoming workshops: Dec 7, 8, 9 “Cocooning for Change: Three steps to start making a change in your life.” Thank you for listening! In this episode I met with local musician Brandt Parke Brandt and I first met about 5 years ago when I checked out his band Mister Master for the first time when they played at Louie Gs Pizza in Fife WA Each time I have had the opportunity to catch Mister Master, they always put on a solid performance. If you are in the Pacific Northwest, it is highly recommended that you catch one of their shows.... With his ever evolving style of song writing and playing, Brandt has put out a six track solo release entitled A Walk Through the Park which was released in Jan 2019. He is currently involved in another project, the two man band known as Brake. We got together to discuss music, influences, art, the Seattle Music scene, some of the best shows he attended when he was growing up, what is next for his bands Mister Master and Brake, as well as his own solo projects It was great to spend time getting to know this incredible musician and equally awesome human. So, without further ado - here's my interview with musician, guitar player extraordinaire, and an all around incredible dude, Brandt Parke..... https://www.facebook.com/ParkeBrandt/ https://brandtparke.bandcamp.com/ http://www.mistermaster.org/ https://www.facebook.com/mistermaster4/ https://www.facebook.com/BRAKEpnw/
I met Whitney Mongé more than a decade ago while she and I were busking in the Pike Place Market. She is now a staple of the Seattle music scene. She gigs around the city as a solo or with a power trio playing her original, soulful music with much success. You can find her at The Hard Rock Cafe on Valentine's Day for the third year in a row. She met me in a small office in the Pike Place Market to reminisce and look to the future. Thanks to Megan Lee for loaning us the office to meet in. Thanks for listening. Terry, Ossa, Jack, and Pablo talk about their musical beginnings, how Tony Hawks Pro Skater shaped us as musicians, we nerd out on Jacks bass tone, we talk about recording their new album and how working with Jack Shirley pushed all of us out of our comfort zone and helped us all realize how our processes were unnecessary and play some of our favorite local music and goof around. Most cities tend to have a voice, but few quite as loud or fascinating as Seattle's. This is a city that gave us Jimi Hendrix, Nirvana and Pearl Jam but also the softer sounds of Fleet Foxes, The Postal Service and Death Cab for Cutie.I wondered just what's bubbling up in Seattle. So I went to NPR member station KEXP, a hugely important voice in the Seattle scene, now and in the past as KCMU. Kevin Cole is someone I trust implicitly. He's been at KEXP for 20 years and is the Chief Content Officer and the afternoon DJ. The musical landscape we explore on this episode of All Songs Considered is deeper than the guitar-based music we've come to know from Seattle. You'll hear everything from sonic laptop adventures in hip-hop to post-horncore. Yup, you read that right: menacing punk energy with brass. I love Seattle.
This week, we sat down with the Seattle-based rapper Sol. During his time at the University of Washington, he was awarded the Bonderman Scholarship which allowed Sol to travel to 10 countries in 10 months. One of the requirements of this trip was that he had to go alone. At the time, Sol sat at #1 on the iTunes Hip Hop charts and #4 globally after the release of Yours Truly, then decided to drop off the map. When most would look to do anything to capitalize financially and socially on an album’s success, Sol saw it more important to find himself. In this episode, Sol talks about the impact of this ten-month journey, how he actually started as a painter before music, his relationship with Macklemore, a pivotal conversation with his Aunt, studying under Seattle Legend Isaac Meek, and the creative process behind his most recent album that just dropped March 1st, Soon Enough. Even if you aren’t an avid listener to Sol or music in general, I highly recommend you listen through this conversation. This talk was more than music. Sol drops some unique insight on crafting the vision of an independent artist, understanding different cultures, and why your definition of success should not be defined by the mainstream. Anyone who wants to get their music out to potential fans has to deal with distribution. And it's not always fun. Or easy. On this episode of Learn From The Pros I talk with Daniel G. Harmann from DistroKid about how they are changing the music distribution game and making it a heck of a lot easier for musicians to get in stores. And for cheap! Daniel and I talk about the importance of building relationships in the music industry, his personal journey as a musician, and what musicians can do right now to up their game and build their fan base. His advice is super on point with where we are at in the music industry today, and I was honored to have him on the Learn From The Pros podcast.

Today we held court on the early nineties music scene in Seattle Washington, and the role Guns N Roses played in the transition from Hair Metal to the Grunge era. We also talk a bit about our experience with record labels in the late nineties and the sinister elements of the music business back in the day when the major label record labels were king. We also play the new song "Bar Fly" from the newly unearthed album from the nineties Grunge band Gruntruck, who had their own problems with the recording industry back in the day. Their kick ass new album comes out through Found Recordings on October 13th 2017. he Jordan Cook AKA Reignwolf crazy buzz started almost two years ago with a stunning in-store performance at Easy Street Records in Seattle and an equally stunning performance at Sasquatch! and Bumbershoot 2012 and Sasquatch! 2013. Mr. Cook is wowing fans across the land with his electric and intense showmanship. Reignwolf is an artist in perpetual motion and there is no stage or space that can contain him. This is one wild wolf that can’t be caged and consumes anything and everything in his path. He does his thing live, large and walks a musical tightrope without a net. On this week’s episode of SMI Radio I chat with Reignwolf to talk about his style is approach to his live performances and his blues-based, gritty, raw Americana rock sound. Back in the 1990′s band’s like Nirvanna, Soundgarden, Pearl Jam and Screaming Trees helped lead a rock and roll revolution and collectively contributed to putting Seattle on the music map. Another Seattle rock outfit called Truly earned a ton of respect but their sound defied the grunge classification. Truly featured former Screaming Trees skin pounder, Mark Pickerel, former Soundgarden bassist, Hiro Yamamoto and the smooth yet menacing voice and overdriven guitar stylings of Robert Roth. The power-trio was first championed in the 90′s by DJ and tastemaker, Marco Collins while he was on air at 107.7 The End. This MTV's artist to watch will be back in the Emerald City January 23rd to play a headlining gig at Barboza. Tickets are available here.
