Its is endangered species day! Both here in Canada and in the U.S. so I spend this week talking about endangered species examples from Canada - we look at failures, successes and I give y'all a brief PSA to remind you who TF I am and who this podcast is for. That being said, take some time after the episode to learn more about endangered species management at naturecanada.ca/discover-nature/endangered-species/
Tw: mention of rape and sexual assault This episode is a lesson in accountability, a practice in holding space for myself and acknowledging that we are all "dickheads in recovery" - Kelechi Okafor. I read a letter from a listener, talk about Toronto's subway riding raccoons and escape artist Capybaras before jumping into a discussion about my research here in Vancouver. I end the episode by unpacking of an incredibly violent and delusional email from someone who felt entitled to my time, space and emotional labour. NOT on any day ending with Y will I allow for this behaviour.
This episode I talk about those sneaky urban geniuses, raccoons. From their representation in media to their intelligence to how YOU can help raccoons in your neighbourhood. As always, extra content, sources and show notes available at patreon.com/jauntingjay.

Music by KAMAUU and art by Andie (@Funkle420)

The hermit in tarot represents self-isolation. This card speaks to the power of rest and individual reflection. After an isolating couple of weeks, I have been able to reflect on HOW I want this podcast to be perceived and WHO this podcast/this space is for. After 12 episodes, I am excited to end this first chapter and start a new one with a greater focus on building community through this podcast. See y'all in Season 2!
Special shout out to Jahmilla from @thesoulfullveganista for this week's animal of the week suggestion. If you like tentacles, ink sacs, and super-smart animals you are in for a treat this week! The theme of this episode is octopuses with honorable mention of "Inky", New Zealand's most famous 8-legged escape artist. This episode talks about octopuses, the theories for the evolution of intelligence in animals and the dangers of animals escaping enclosures. SOUNDS FUN RIGHT? Have a listen, leave a review and be sure to check out the extra content each week over on Patreon.com/jauntingjay or daily more digestible wildlife content on my I.G. - @jaunting.jay.
This week I start off talking about one of the best single fathers around (the cassowary) before jumping fully into same-sex behaviour displayed by gay bats, and I wrap up the episode by discussing Namibia's new wildlife-conflict stratefy for elephants! Extra content and sources curated just for you over on patreon.com/jauntingjay Instagram.com/jaunting.jay/
In this episode, I talk about hybrid animals (different from mythical chimeras), the role of spatial memory, and the ethics of certain scientific industry standards that are harmful to individuals. I think I want to dedicate an entire episode to exploring veganism and scientific experiments, I just struggle with both being central to my identity and want to commit time to unpack this. If you have your own experiences with being vegan and aspects of your identity that conflict with veganism, please send me something to jaunting.jay@gmail.com Extra content - links - sources @ Patreon.com/jauntingjay Digestible content @instagram.com/jaunting.jay/
Accidentally ended up using the whole episode to talk about corals. In this episode, I unpack what they do, where they live and how they are impacted. I also highligh Joan Owens Murrell, a Black woman and Marine Biologist who helped discover a new genus of coral and 2 new species. Her work serves as an example of how to conduct and succeed in research with a disability/condition that negatively impacts your ability to collect data. Even though Black history month just ended, I will NOT be stopping the Blackity Black content any time soon! As always, there is more to enjoy: Patreon/com/jaunting.jay Instagram.com/jaunting.jay/ until next week!
You have to go out of your way to continue learning about black history (*every month for the rest of your life). Be sure to listen to my more conversational podcast this week with fellow Black Creative @zipporahthevegan over on @Goatsandoatspodcast. It was great to introduce Christopher Schell during experiment 626 this week. It was even more fun to inject some of my research and document my contributions to black history in the making. I want this podcast to serve as both a time capsule and a practice in commitment so I am VERY pleased with how this one turned out. Thank y'all for listening! This week I connect a little more with my Jamaican heritage/ culture. It was a lot of fun for me to be able to research animals I have a bit more of a connection with. It was also so inspiring to come across a fellow Canadian-Jamaican ecologist! Such a fun episode for me but, I really went off in the extra content on Patreon. As always, like and review the podcast, and be sure to send in your stories to jaunting.jay@gmail.com. Until next week
This episode I talk about phenomenal black femmes, Nigerian animals you may have never heard of, and the problems with developing wildlife conservation strategies WITHOUT first consulting black indigenous communities. It is black history month so the next couple of episodes will be focusing on wildlife through the lens of black history and culture.
In this episode, I push the LGBTQ agenda because I want to make clear that being queer is very natural, and observable in other species. I introduce the concept of an abstract, talk about finding nemo, non-binary birds, and worms that fight with their di*ks. Cover art by Andie aka @Funkle420
In this week's episode, we talk about beavers and how they are used to create artificial flavoring., I unpack the secrets of monkeys using mind-control to move machines and we wrap it up with the first gorillas to contract covid. As always, extra content will be unpacked on my Patreon (patreon.com/jauntingjay). Cover art by Andie aka Funkle420.
This week I am talking about why foxes are amazing, the disaster with dolphins that happened in the 60's and Canada's very own Raccoon whisperer. I wanted to serve up something spicy for the first episode so brace yourself for this dolphin story. If you have never heard about James Blackwood, Margaret Howe or foxes before, don't worry, now is your chance to find out. Cover art by Andie aka Funkle420.
In this episode, I introduce the podcast, myself, and all the things you can expect from Zoboomafoolish. I spend time explaining the meaning behind each of my reasons for setting up the show the way I have. This podcast is inspired by but not affiliated with the original Zoboomafoo PBS program.
