Each day we must do battle with evil. "Old habits, hereditary tendencies, will strive for the mastery..." (AA, 476). It must be our constancy : fight your self, fight the flesh. Though sin is tearing us apart in this inward battle between God's will and our selfishness, tearing us away from God's image and embrace, if we have even the smallest confidence that He is our personal Savior, if we seek Him and share Him, we can run up that mountain of sin in Christ's strength victorious !

Divorce is Not an Option. If you feel like this advice is harsh because of how bad your marriage is, check out our free giveaway:"What to do if your Spouse is Tearing your Marriage Apart"So, what is the most downloaded episode in the history of this podcast? I don't think it'll be a surprise! When looking for the #1 all time episode, there was no shock when the statistics showed that the two-part interview discussing divorce are the two most downloaded episodes. In this episode, I interview Dan Yeazel and learn about the agreement he and his wife built the foundation of their marriage on, divorce is never an option. Their driving force? Not wanting their kids to grow up seeing the things they did, not wanting their family to struggle with the implications of divorce.  “We walked into this marriage knowing and committing that divorce would never be on the table.”Not giving their marriage the option of divorce provided stability within their marriage, they both understood from minute one that divorce would never be an option, therefore it was not a lurking fear in the back of their minds. Marriage is hard and struggle is inevitable. Building your relationship through God can help the struggle not feel so lonely.  The best advice Dan shares to the stability of his marriage is seen in James 1:19, “Be quick to listen, slow to speak, slow to anger” because, as Dan shares, “you can apologize but you can't take those words back.” Words hurt, harsh words are unforgettable and neither your partner nor your marriage deserves that. “God wants our families to stay together. Take a stand for your marriage!”Listen to the interview here to hear everything about marriage, the different roles between man and woman within marriage, and the ways in which turning to God can change everything for the better. The advice Dan shares is full of encouragement for you and your marriage. For 3 steps on how to embrace this philosophy in your marriage, no matter how bad things are, read the entire blog post here. Love Always, AmandaPS. In this episode of the Work in Progress podcast from SXSW EDU in Austin, I am joined by Patti Constantakis of Walmart.org, Bridgette Gray of Opportunity@Work, and Kenny Nguyen of ThreeSixtyEight in a discussion about how to create better access to good jobs for people without a bachelor's degree. A four-year college degree can be a ticket to a good job and a great career, but it's not for everyone. In fact, it's not for most workers. More than half of U.S. workers do not have a four-year bachelor's degree. They're what's called STARs –Skilled Through Alternative Routes, and they get their start through community college, work experience, military service and credentialing. But too many employers still use a bachelor's degree as a barrier to entry, depriving many STARs from higher-paying jobs and career growth and depriving the companies of top talent. Last week I attended the SXSW EDU conference where I moderated a panel on The Invisible Barrier to Economic Mobility. The conversation focused on how STARs can Tear the Paper Ceiling created by employers who value a degree over skills when it comes to hiring and promotion. Joining me on stage in Austin were Patti Constantakis from Walmart.org, Bridgette Gray from Opportunity @Work, and Kenny Nguyen of ThreeSixtyEight. They expressed their pain on how their loved ones were treated throughout this ordeal. They called for accountability, and for another family not to go through what they had gone through. Joining Nuala is Zoe Billingham, former head of the inspectorate of Constabulary, Ellen Milazzo from Victim Support and Baroness Helen Newlove, former victim's commissioner for England and Wales. Up to 9 in 10 first-time mothers who have a vaginal birth will have some sort of tear. So, it's no wonder that tearing is a big worry for expectant mums. Marie Louise, also known as The Modern Midwife, explains to Nuala why tears happen, and what to really expect. Plus, midwife turned inventor, Malene Hegenberger, explains how she created a retractor to help her see tears better when suturing. Why are women from diverse background much less likely to be able to swim than white women? And what can be done about it? Team GB's first black female swimmer Alice Dearing helped to found the Black Swimming Association along with journalist Seren Jones – they join Nuala to discuss. As London Fashion Week draws to a close today, the Times fashion director, 51-year-old Anna Murphy, reflects on feeling like the only woman of her age in the front row who has not had work done on her face. What she calls the normalisation of ‘tweakments' is one of the topics explored in her new book Destination Fabulous. Latest Spoken Label (Poetry / Writer / Artist Podcast) features the amazing Perry Gasteiger. Perry Gasteiger (they/them) is a non-binary Canadian poet who focuses on the mundanity of existence through a lens of empathetic consideration. They enjoy exploring phenomenological ideas of lived experience and how they mold our understanding of ourselves and our world. By pushing the boundaries of their own experiences, Perry tries to find universalities in unique situations for people to connect through. Bringing attention to the extraordinary nature of life and pain, they juxtapose the beautiful and the deformed, the congruent and the discordant, and the comfortable and the anxious. Perry draws much of their imagery from the landscapes of northern Ontario where they grew up, and severe bodily exploration and discomfort. They find the connection between human nature and the wider rhythms of the natural world especially intriguing, taking particular pleasure in dismantling the corporeal experience into its component parts and closing the gap between the controlled and the wild. In this session, we talk about Perry's debut collection "Meditations for the Dead and Dying". This collection explores topics of self, identity, and relationship through a thorough undoing of the body. Tearing open the discomfort of corporeality, this brief selection is a feast of blood, bone, and flesh that will leave you hungry for more. How to Study the Bible
Ecclesiastes 3:1-9 - Planning Life in Light of Eternity

How to Study the Bible

Play Episode Listen Later Feb 13, 2023 18:46

Ecclesiastes is a book designed to provoke emotion and get us thinking. The preacher – probably Solomon – wrote this to make sense of a good God in a broken and dark world. In this section, he ponders what it means to number our days wisely. You can find the full show notes at https://www.lifeaudio.com/how-to-study-the-bible/ Bible Reading Tip: When we read the bible, we should look for the tone and emotion of the author, as well as the words and structure. In wisdom literature, like Ecclesiastes, we need to see the poetic, literary form that the wisdom is held in. Part 1: Ecclesiastes 3:1-8 - Understanding Time Turn, turn, turn by The Byrds - they took these words from Ecclesiastes and made it into a hit song and anthem of a volatile age (1965). Our time is short, full of ups and downs, full of work, and also time to rest. There are times when things are falling apart, and when things are coming together. Application: What would it look like to open your hands and heart and say, “I want to live fully in the day I have”? What season are you in? Is there room for both sides of what is presented here? Joy, and also grief? Work, but also rest? Tearing down, but also building up? We want to avoid lopsided living. Pray to understand what season your loved ones are in as well. Ask God to give you discernment to see and understand where loved ones are, and give them grace and compassion for the place they are in. Part 2: Ecclesiastes 3:9-15 – Our Experience of Time, God's Experience of Time “What do workers gain from their toil?” [cf: Genesis 1-3] – we're trying to figure out work, with knowledge of good and evil, in a way that we can't fully comprehend. But God knows the whole story. God knows all and is above and beyond time, and therefore is the one we can trust. Rightly numbering our days and seasons leads to a content and peaceful human life. Application: Allow seasons to come. Trust that our God is good and sovereign. He knows what is happening in your life and therefore, you can trust him. We have to come to a settled acceptance that there are things God sees and knows that we ourselves will never understand. We want to control things. But we must cede control. This is how we find freedom. Cf: Psalm 90:12: Teach us to number our days, so that we may gain a heart of wisdom. God, who knows all and is beyond time, is the one we can trust. Rightly numbering our days and seasons leads to a content and peaceful human life. “I know that there is nothing better for people than to be happy and to do good while they live.” What time are you in? What would it look like to live rightly just today? And then trust the rest of your days to the Lord who loves you, knows you, and who already sees how everything is playing out. In Episode #120, we explore reinventing a well-established venture capital firm. We're joined by Steve Vassallo, General Partner at Foundation Capital. We cover Minimum Awesome Product, the prepared mind vs. open mind, and learnings from tearing down and rebuilding an investment firm. “The best product matters, but it is not what defines a generationally important company.” – Steve Vassallo EPISODE GUIDE (LINKS, QUOTES, NOTES, AND BOOKS MENTIONED) https://www.danielscrivner.com/notes/foundation-capital-steve-vassallo  FULL TEXT TRANSCRIPT https://www.danielscrivner.com/notes/foundation-capital-steve-vassallo-transcript  CHAPTERS This episode is our definitive guide to reinventing a venture capital firm. In it we cover: 00:00:00 – Introduction 00:02:39 – From electro mechanical engineering to product design 00:06:22 – Interdisciplinary innovation and missionary misfits 00:10:24 – How investing snuck into Steve's career 00:15:33 – Working at the intersection of building and investing 00:19:24 – A 15-year window into the investment world 00:24:45 – Tearing down and rebuilding an investment firm 00:39:04 – Identifying a firm's turning point 00:41:21 – Going down the rabbit hole of crypto and enticing investors to follow 00:51:35 – The prepared mind vs. open mind 00:54:44 – Building the best product matters, but it doesn't guarantee success 00:57:56 – The Minimum Awesome Product and evolving product-market fit 01:02:07 – Advice for new founders ABOUT FOUNDATION CAPITAL Steve Vassallo is General Partner at Foundation Capital and author of "The Way to Design." In this episode, we explore what it's like to reinvent a venture capital firm. Foundation Capital was founded in 1995, 27 years ago by Bill Elmore, Catherine Gold, and Jim Anderson. One of the foundation's early claims to fame was that it was one of the first investors in Netflix back in the early 2000s.  This episode is our definitive guide to reinventing a venture capital firm. In it, we cover Steve's early years bringing design, product, and engineering together at IDEO, and what that taught him about building successful products and companies, the early warning signs he saw that made it clear Foundation Capital needed to be reinvented, how Foundation rediscovered who they were and who they wanted to be as a team, how they changed the way they operated and made investment decisions to giving partners more latitude to invest in the ideas they thought could be massive companies in the years to come, how they began making crypto investments, which led to massive wins in Solana and Brave by making small bets and winning over LP support as the wins added up.

You know what they say, 'An apple a day, keeps the doctor away...' so for those of you with broken Contaxes, you better get rid of all your apples as the doctor is here! Okay, so maybe he hasn't quite gotten his PhD yet, but in this, the 41st episode of the Camerosity Podcast, we are happy to introduce you to Brandon Monroe, an aviation mechanics student who just so happens to really love the Zeiss-Ikon Contax rangefinders so much that he wanted to learn how to repair them himself.  Brandon reached out to other well known technicians who repair Contaxes like Henry Scherer and Mark Hansen and learned what he could from them.  For everything else, he rolled up his sleeves and got to work.  Tearing down several broken Contax rangefinders, and at least one that had been previously CLAd to see what was done, Brandon has recently become successful at full CLAs of both pre and postwar Contax IIs and IIIs.  Brandon has repaired several cameras for Paul and a few others, and according to Paul, the cameras are like new. Listen in as Brandon tells his story of how he got started and why he fell in love with Contax rangefinders.  He discusses differences between the pre and postwar shutters, what the shutters are made of, how the rangefinders work and how they're adjusted, who makes our favorite Contax lens adapters, using Contax lenses on Nikon rangefinders, plus a huge number of other things.  Mike can't help himself and goes into the history of the camera somewhat, explaining how the Contax I came to be, and what differences are between it and the later cameras. Joining us on this episode are returning guests Aidan Dean, Alex Dietrich, and first time callers Steve Wilcox and from all the way in Belgium, Eric Kaas Sluis, a self professed Contax addict who has one of the largest collections of working Contaxes and lenses in the world. In addition to repair of the Contax, we talk about what makes them special, who made the original Zeiss-Ikon Contax in 1926 (Hint: His name rhymes with 'Bagel'), postwar Jena Contaxes, and why you should consider a Kiev if you cannot afford a Contax.  Amazingly, the guys somehow manage to stay on topic for most of the show, but a small amount of time is spent on a few other cameras that we just can't stop talking about. As always, the topics we discuss on the Camerosity Podcast are influenced by you.  We would love to hear from more listeners, especially those who are new to shooting film or collecting cameras.  Please don't feel like you have to be an expert on a specific type of camera, or have the level of knowledge on par with other people on the show.  We LOVE people who are new to shooting and are interested in having an episode dedicated to people new to the hobby, so please don't consider your knowledge level to be a prerequisite for joining! The guys and I rarely know where each episode is going to go until it happens, so if you'd like to join us on a future episode, be sure to look out for our show announcements on our Camerosity Podcast Facebook page, and right here on mikeeckman.com.  We usually record every other Monday and announcements, along with the Zoom link are typically shared 2-3 days in advance. If you want to join us for our next episode, we will record Episode 42 on Monday, February 6th and we will talk American cameras like Argus, Clarus, Perfex, and many other brands you may or may not have heard of!  Be sure to stay tuned for the official announcement! Heroin Chic: The 90s Trend That Shouldn't Come Back. We are not sacrificing our health for a trend. Period, full stop. Recently there was a New York Post article claiming: “Bye bye booty, Heroin Chic is Back.” Since its release it's been targeting and marketed to fashion trends to bring back emaciated features, dark under eye circles, and very pale skin. People had some pretty strong feelings about the article, understandably. As women we have been told one too many times that our happiness & value lies in what we look like.
