Ryan Holiday On the Pursuit of Virtue

The Rich Roll Podcast

This cultural moment bears witness to a growing distrust of institutions unprecedented in our lifetime. With it comes an unraveling of healthy communication. Tearing others down has taken priority over rising ourselves up. And binary thinking, divisiveness, and fear-based behavior have supplanted sense-making, appreciation for nuance, and mutual respect. For Ryan Holiday, the antidote is the pursuit of virtue—specifically, the virtue upon which all other virtues sit, courage: the ability to rise above fear and to do what's right.Returning for his 4th appearance on the podcast, Ryan is one of the world's bestselling living philosophers globally lauded for adapting Stoicism to the mainstream. His books—including The Obstacle Is The Way, Ego Is the Enemy, The Daily Stoic, and Stillness Is the Key—have sold over 4 million copies and spent over 300 weeks on the bestseller lists.Ryan's expertise in mining the modern-day practicalities of ancient philosophy to live more optimally is coveted by some of the world's most successful CEOs, political leaders, world-class athletes, and NFL coaches, and he's here today to help us make sense of this current moment through the lens of his latest book, Courage Is Calling. This is a conversation about the challenge of sense-making amidst our national divide. It's about the application of time-tested wisdom, the nature of virtue and why doing the right thing is always the right thing. We cover it all: the perils of individualism, responsibility as a counter-balance to liberty, fear, courage, partisanship, tribalism, and why virtue is both a craft and an action verb.To read more click here. You can also watch listen to our exchange on YouTube. And as always, the podcast streams wild and free on Apple Podcasts and Spotify.I relish my conversations with Ryan—he is a compelling thinker about things that matter, and this one is chock a block with practical wisdom, things we can learn from philosophy and history to make sense of today, and most importantly, to live and be better humans and citizens.Peace + Plants, See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

I really want to start investing but I keep getting hung up on all the chatter out there. I can't figure out if I'm supposed to wait to start investing until I've paid off all my debt, or is that not smart to do? Also, it just feels like I need to be an expert at investing to do it well. I know that's not true, but man, it just feels so hard to figure out investing. I know so many people are making a kiling, and I kinda feel bad that I haven't started at all, know what I mean. You've done so many great investing episodes, I'm curious if there's an episode from the past that you think I should check out. You're awesome and I so appreciate this show for motivating me. Why High Conflict is Tearing Us Apart (And How To Sidestep the Chaos)

The Three Month Vacation Podcast

When I was 13 years old, my parents got involved in a court battle. I was past 40 when the issue was finally resolved. We don't see ourselves wanting to engage in high conflict. Yet, there seems to be no way to avoid the tectonic forces of our world. No matter where you look online or offline, someone is continuously bashing the other side. And often, that chaos spills over into our world. Like it did with my parents. They had no intention of being sieged for over 25 years, and yet that's what happened. Tensions escalate beyond a point, original facts disappear, and conflict becomes a reality. Yet, all conflict isn't destructive. There's a difference between High Conflict and Healthy Conflict. The dangerous kind is when it's "us" vs "them", "good" vs "evil". That kind of conflict bestows arrogance and superiority. It layers on the rage, sometimes even dread. It's a state where almost everyone loses, unlike in Healthy Conflict, where disagreement doesn't soar and serves more as a way to understand each other and improve. "High Conflict" is a book by Amanda Ripley, which kept me reading late at night. Typically, my eyes are on self-shut mode by 10 pm (since I wake up at 4 am), but this book was fascinating. Plus, it tackles a topic that seems to swarm around us both on a personal and a societal level. Is there a way around High Conflict? That's what I set to find out.

And also, Jesse Lingard is still alive! 2) Bayern Munich demonstrates that if you take a club's manager, best defender and most important attacking facilitator, it's much harder for them to cause you problems. Just ask Leipzig. 3) Napoli continues the strong start with a 2-1 over Juventus, whose individual mistakes have us wondering what Allegri needs to fix first and fastest. 4) Atletico were different, and then familiar... and then they ended up getting two late goals to earn a 2-1 win, thereby proving that the club will never change. Have you ever had a conversation with someone where they just talk about themselves the whole time but never ask about you? Sometimes we treat God in the same way - we pray to share our thoughts, dreams, and wishlist, but we don't get to know Him. Or conversely, we learn everything that we can about Who He is, but we are not willing to open our hearts to Him. Our relationship with Him is a two-way street. He has given us access to Him, allowing us to learn more about Him, but we also need to tear the veil over our hearts. We want to have an intimate relationship with God, unveiling ourselves so that we are seen, known, and loved by choice. I don't know about you, but I definitely want to be invited to the Wedding Banquet someday, and not just as a guest, but as part of the Body of Christ, His Bride, seeing Him face-to-face. Let's not take for granted the access that we have to our God, and also grant Him access to our own hearts.

Growing up on the East Side of Cincinnati, life wasn't easy for Roadrunner TB. Brought up by his grandma, TB lived in the infamous Saint Ledgers Apartment Buildings. From a young age he knew that his only options were to either play sports or sell drugs, making it inevitable for TB to get involved in the streets. Gifted in basketball and football, he soon realized his chances to go pro were slim after tearing his ACL. As a kid, TB began freestyling and recording with friends and collaborators from his neighborhood. While balancing minimum wage jobs and college, TB began “road running” hoping to carve out a better life for his young daughter. Being the realist that he is, he became conscious that rap would be his only way out of Evanston. TB locked in the studio and completed “STL Stories" and dropped the viral hit “33”. As one of Cinematic Music Group's brightest stars, TB hopes to put Cincinnati and his “blender music” on the map. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/theprogressreportpodcast/support

Tearing the achilles tendon that connects the large calf muscle to the heel bone is a major injury that could derail your fitness efforts for up to a full year (depending on the severity of the injury and the healing period). Two recent guests of All About Fitness, Tony Gentilcore and Dr. Jay Dawes, experienced calf injuries and achilles tears that took months to recover from. These are two intelligent, well-respected fitness professionals who each experienced the same debilitating injury that is very common among active adults. Here's the thing, if you listen to this podcast, you ARE NOT allowed to have this kind of injury. My job is to inform you how to remain injury free so that you can exercise and train to enjoy all of your favorite activities. This Quick Fit Tip covers the mechanism of injury for calf tears, it's one of the most common injuries for active adults and, more importantly, discusses strategies that you can follow to reduce the risk of having this type of injury. On this Quick Fit Tip it's all about how to NOT injure your calf when you're out being active and enjoying your favorite activities. Welcome back to our weekend Cabral HouseCall shows! This is where we answer our community's wellness, weight loss, and anti-aging questions to help people get back on track! Check out today's questions:  Paula: Thank you so much for your incredible work. I'm an IHP level 2 btw so I did learn a lot about exercise. However, I was reading Awaken The Giant Within by Tony Robbins and I'm not sure I agree with the section where he talks about exercise. He says that anaerobic exercise burns glycogen as the main source of fuel while causing the body to store fat but aerobic however burns fat as fuel. He talks about the problem of people pushing themselves beyond their heart rates in an anaerobic state and that this is dangerous because the body shunts blood from critical organs because it needs that immediate demand for blood and so these organs lose a large amount of oxygen. According to him “wind sprints create an immediate oxygen deficit in the cells and begin to train your metabolism to burn glycogen/sugar but the fat continues. Apparently the key is to burn fat and not sugar. Very confused now as I thought workouts such as tabatas were very effective to burn fat! Elizabeth: Hi Dr Cabral, what makes eyes (or an eye) teary in sunlight? My left eye seems to almost always tear at the outer corner when in the sun. Sometimes it won't stop. My eyes seem to be a little sensitive, nothing I haven't been able to deal with but for example when I looked out the window the other day I suddenly had a blurry and dizzy feeling to the point I couldn't see anything and turned round and then a few seconds later was fine. I'm not great with fluorescent lights either. There's a chance I could possibly be anaemic so whether it's related I'm not sure, or dry eye (I supplement enough including primrose oil and Seabuckthorn oil). Cannot really recall how long I've had this happening. If I wear sunglasses it seems to be ok but I think it was Chervin (Cymbiotika founder) that said our eyes should be exposed to sunlight at least for a bit of time. Thank you for all you do. Vera: Hello doctor Cabral, I've noticed that from time to time I get heart palpitations at the same time when I feel bloated. It actually often happens just before I burp or pass gas. Do you think it is connected? And what can be the cause of it, and the best remedy? Thank you in advance for your answer! Best,Vera Lyndsey: Hi Dr Cabral I've been on long term antibiotics for approximately 9 years ever since getting married. I have coeliac disease and from listening to your podcasts, I've found a IHP here in Australia to work with as I'm sure I have some terrible gut problems. I'll be starting the CBO protocol soon (am waiting for my starter lab results) but I had been taking an antibiotic called macrodantin after having sex to avoid a UTI. I've purchased your UTI protocol with the idea that while I'm working to correct my health I could possibly use this in place of the antibiotic. The last thing I want to do is be on antibiotics while I'm trying to get getter. Does this sound like a good plan to you? Previous to the regular antibiotics I had a UTI at least once per month so have been taking antibiotics for my entire married life 16 years! I have listened to your podcasts about UTI's but I'm not sure any of them directly relate to my issue. Any insight would be great thanks Kelly: I am a 52 year old female weighing 190 5'5. A recent MRI has shown marrow edema underlying the calcaneal attachment of the distal Achilles tendon. I am an active person currently trying to lose 45 lb and don't like taking ibuprofen. Is there any natural protocols (supplement, essential oil, massage technique or exercise) I could try to relieve the edema or assist this bone marrow issue.Any suggestions is appreciated. Thank you so very much! Kelly Sophia: Hi Dr. Cabral! For many years I've had this weird itchiness around my lower abdomen - right under the belly button and across my gut - usually a couple minutes after I eat. This sensation is usually also accompanied by bloating and just general discomfort in my body. I always chocked it up to my body dysmorphia, but I'm wondering now if it could be epidermal inflammation from the food I'm eating. It seems like the itchiness is right in the adipose tissue of that area which is super uncomfortable. I don't have a rash or hives or any discoloration. Thank you for any thoughts! LIVE FROM THE NO PANIC ZONE— I AM AMERICA'S VOICE—I'M STEVE GRUBER—GOD BLESS AMERICA—THIS IS THE STEVE GRUBER SHOW—    HERE ARE 3 BIG THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW FOR HOUR NUMBER 2—   THREE— Hunter Biden has a propensity to use the N-word- a lot—in private conversations—and it seems maybe Papa Joe does too—now that would be embarrassing in the era of cancel culture—   TWO— The IRS is on the trail of a dramatic and embarrassing leak of tax information on some of America's wealthiest people—But gleefully some outlets are reporting on who paid what in taxes—which for some—was zero—   ONE— Alleged reporters and journalists in this country spend an awful lot of time—trying to tell you how the Republican Party is tearing itself apart at the seams—and with Former President Trump in the mix—they say over and over again; it may not survive at all—because as they say, good republicans—you know like the perverts and liars and posers that made up the Lincoln Project—that they are somehow the real republicans—that somehow Liz Cheney and Mitt Romney are the real republicans— and the rest—are doomed to failure— This is what the left wing media—and their partners in politics keep telling us—but—there is more to the story—   Because the same folks praising Liz Cheney and Mitt Romney— they also spent more than a decade trashing Cheney's father—Dick—the former Vice President—and Mitt Romney was mocked and smeared for his ‘binders full of women' and these dirtbags went so far as to attack him for his adopted grandchild—that happens to be black—yeah this is a classy bunch— calling Mitt a racist any time they could sneak it in—   But make no mistake—the Republicans are on their way to taking over the US House by wide margins—and that will get going in earnest in just a few more weeks—Nancy Pelosi will be losing her gavel for the second time— they will also expand their hold on the U-S Senate and in two more years—will take back the White House too—   It's not the republicans in deep trouble; it's the Democrats that are truly in a battle for the soul of their party—   I mean look at what is going on—you have the Squad blasting Israel with anti-Semitism on a regular basis—you have members who think teaching kids that everyone who's white is a villain—and every black person is a victim—   You have Joe Biden—a guy that can hide his own Easter Eggs and plan his own surprise party—allegedly in charge—and you have a whole swarm of them targeting Joe Manchin—the sometimes moderate Senator from West Virginia—becoming the focus of far left hatred—because he refuses to blow up the filibuster—pack the supreme court or allow his Democrat colleagues to rig the American voting system—   Yesterday he told them no again—even after being hammered for hours by so-called civil rights leaders—   And that means—that hate-fest pointed at Manchin will only increase—BUT let me point some things out—   More than 80% of Americans want photo ID to vote—they want gas prices to be low—they want government to take care of a couple things but leave them alone for the most part—they want the border secure—but they are ok with legal immigration within reason—they want people to pay their fair share of taxes—but they don't want to see people get taken advantage of—they want to look after the environment—but they don't want to give up air conditioning—the refrigerator, their car or their lifestyle—    They like when things are cheap at the store—but they don't want China taking control of anything else—in fact they want China to be held accountable for the worldwide pandemic that we all know they lied about—   They will listen to health experts on the virus but are no longer buying into the pandemic panic porn—and they don't want vaccine passports—not now and not ever—   They want a country where the guilty are held accountable no matter who they are—not a place where the globalist liberal elite get away with it—just because they can buy the right strings and then pull them at the right time—   They want a country where it's safe to walk down the street—even at night—and where police are treated with respect— not attacked—and certainly not blamed every time somebody gets hurt or worse—in a bad situation—   They want a country—where criminals are the ones held accountable for committing crimes—and not some nebulous ‘system' that hasn't treated Johnny fair enough— and they certainly don't want criminals put back on the streets because their self-esteem wasn't protected enough—   They want a country where hard work still matters—a lot— and people respect each other—and I can assure you—they don't want to see the world through the obtuse, singular, distorted and divisive lens of race and skin color—and they don't want everyone taught that America is a terrible and unfair place— where there are only oppressors on one side and only victims on the other—   They want a fair chance—not a participation ribbon—they want what people have wanted for nearly 250 years—they want a chance to achieve the American Dream—   And that means one thing: The political party in real danger of coming apart at the seams—is the Democrat Party—

Next, Sam and Emma continue their discussion around vaccine IP law, the crisis in India, and Bill Gates’ role in all of it, and brainstorm Larry Kudrow’s favorite meat-based beers.
