Therapy on the Cutting Edge
Helping Women on Their Journey Through the Five Phases of Divorce Grief

Therapy on the Cutting Edge

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 2, 2026 56:52

In this episode, Oona discusses how she went through her own divorce a number of years ago and found that there were not that many resources for women. After moving through her own divorce and becoming resettled, she started running groups for women going through divorce and has run numerous groups over the years. She shared that through working with many women, she began to find patterns and themes and wrote a book for women to help them as they make this transition in their life. She explained that the Kubler-Ross model of grief was helpful, but wasn't quite capturing the nuances of divorce. She described what she calls the five phases of divorce, which are Heartbreak, Roller Coaster, Mending, Letting Go and Moving On. In the Heartbreak phase, she explained that whether the person initiated the divorce or not, there is a great deal of pain and heartbreak and its a time for the therapist to be fully present with their client. The Roller Coaster phase features a mix of emotions with sadness, anger, fear, shame, and other emotions, and can be confusing since there may be conflicting emotions. For example, someone might feel a great deal of anger and maybe hate, but at the same time sadness and love. Helping clients to understand that this is a phase of the process of moving through divorce can help clients to understand that this will not last forever and to be patient with themselves, rather than rushing into another relationship or self medicating. The Mending phase is a time to turn toward the self instead of spending so much energy on the ex or the divorce. Mending includes a process of renegotiating boundaries, not only with the ex around what their interactions will be like or how they will coparent, but also their friends, family, and in laws. She explained that it's a time for reevaluation and many people also begin to reevaluate their boundaries with others in their life. The fourth phase is Letting Go and is an important component of healing. When people divorce, they not only let go of their spouse, but also their identity of being a married person, as well as their identity of being part of an intact family. Lastly, in the Moving On phase, she explains that the person is shifting their focus away from the divorce and towards the future, whether that be in another relationship, their work, their children or a new venture. She explained that sometimes people can get stuck in a phase like the Roller Coaster phase, and it can be helpful to work with them in becoming unstuck. The process of the therapist figuring out whether this is part of the natural process or whether the client is stuck can be difficult to differentiate. We discuss getting legal consultation and Oona recommends against therapists referring to a specific lawyer because all divorces are different, but instead encouraging clients to do a lot of research to find what is the right fit for them. We also talked about co-parenting counseling and how it's different than therapy where you're not working on the relationship between the couple, but helping them work together for the best interest of the child. Oona shares how valuable the groups have been for her clients. Her book, Unhitched: The Essential Divorce Guide for Women just came out the week before the interview and is reflective of so many women's journeys through the process. She also said she is providing trainings for therapists to learn how to run the divorce support groups for women and is leading a two day long Institute at the American Group Psychotherapy Association Conference in NY in March for therapists experiencing divorce. Oona Metz, LICSW is a Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker, a Certified Group Psychotherapist, and a Fellow of the American Group Psychotherapy Association. She has 30 years of experience working with individuals, families, and groups. Her private practice offices are located in Brookline and Arlington, Massachusetts. She is active on numerous committees and boards related to group therapy and prioritizes ongoing learning in diversity, equity, and inclusion. Her practice is focused on treating the emotional aspects of divorce and group therapy, and she leads three weekly divorce support groups. Worum geht's? Not all BPD parents are the same, but, many, many of them are untreated, competitive, need their child or children's love and validation in such an unhealthy way that their need for a child or children's "loyalty" "never abandon me" drives so many Borderline Mothers and Borderline fathers to alienate you from you child or children.Co-parenting efforts on the part of your BPD Ex may well be so full of high-conflict and many a parent with BPD cannot put their child's needs ahead of their own. If the BPD Ex still blames you for everything they deem that was "wrong" with the relationship they carry on believing that you shouldn't have any rightsto "their child". For many Co-parenting will end up more being Parallel parenting. Either way you need to have done your healing work to be able to stay calm, to be non-reactive to the BPD Ex and to only communicate facts about what your child needs. Co-parenting, for many, not all, with a BPD Ex just become another somewhat different but very familiar rollercoaster experience that you need to learn how to strategize to cope with while giving your child emotional safety and love and as healthy of a life as you can during your custody or visitation. As conflict-laden as most of these situationsare it is really not going to be any better for you or your child or children to try to stay in a toxic BPD relationship hoping that will help your child or children. Sadly, they are going to be wounded in childhood. https://ajmahari.ca/sessions - Sessionshttps://ajmahari.ca/podcasts - Podcastshttps://ajmahari.com - Online Store new Course Modules coming soonhttps://survivingbpdrelationshipbreakup.com - This podcast and my YoutubeThis podcast is ranked in the Top 100 Relationships Podcasts on feedspot.com at:100 Best Relationship Podcasts You Must Follow in 2025Million Podcasts has ranked this podcast in the top 60 Codependency Podcasts, the top 100 Narcissistic Abuse Podcasts and the top 100 in their Toxic RelationshipPodcast lists.https://www.millionpodcasts.com/codependency-podcasts/https://www.millionpodcasts.com/narcissistic-abuse-podcasts/https://www.millionpodcasts.com/toxic-relationship-podcasts/

Walled Lake, Michigan — just 25 miles from Detroit — was once one of the Midwest's most electric summer destinations. In this episode of The End of the Road in Michigan, we step back to the early 20th century, when steam trains, Model Ts, and streetcars carried thousands to the first popular beach west of Detroit. What began as a quiet farming village transformed into a lakeside playground filled with dance halls, glowing pavilions, and the roar of the Flying Dragon roller coaster. We tell the story of rival dance halls that packed nearly a thousand people onto polished maple floors. We revisit the Walled Lake Amusement Park, where families rode Ferris wheels at sunset and teenagers stayed out late beneath spinning mirrored lights. And we explore how, even during the Great Depression, this small Michigan town kept the music playing. This episode is about ambition, escape, and the simple power of summer nights by the water. It is the story of how Walled Lake became more than a dot on a map — it became a memory for a generation. The End of the Road in Michigan is a production of Thumbwind PublicationsThis episode includes AI-generated content.

Paying attention to our bodies and the food and drink we consume can enable us to make physical changes that are often much more easy to implement than specifically psychological changes. I invite listeners to reconsider their perceptions of anxiety and to recognize that many symptoms labeled as anxiety may actually stem from physiological stress responses. My goal is not to prescribe a perfect diet or impose food rules, but to encourage a deeper understanding of how our bodies signal their needs. We begin by exploring the typical symptoms of anxiety that may actually be related to fluctuations in blood sugar. I describe how a drop in blood sugar can trigger stress hormones, resulting in sensations like shakiness, sweating, irritability, and a racing heartbeat—symptoms that closely mimic anxiety. This physiological response can be especially terrifying for those who already have a predisposition to anxiety, as the mind often interprets these signals as indicators of impending doom. By shifting the narrative from fear to curiosity—asking questions like "When did I last eat?"—we can empower ourselves to better understand our bodily signals rather than allowing them to spiral into anxiety. As we discuss caffeine, I highlight its dual role in heightening our alertness while simultaneously stimulating anxiety. I explain how caffeine works by blocking adenosine and stimulating adrenaline, which can be manageable in a regulated system but can exacerbate feelings of panic in an already stressed body. The combination of chronic stress and caffeine can create a cycle where small amounts of stress trigger overwhelming sensations, which might be misinterpreted as anxiety. I emphasize that this isn't a sign of personal failure, but rather a natural response of a sensitized nervous system.#Anxiety #PanicAttacks #BloodSugar #CaffeineSensitivity #MentalHealth #NervousSystem #StressManagement #AnxietyCoachesPodcast #GinaRyan #HolisticHealth #Glucose #Adrenaline #Cortisol #MindBody #HealthAnxiety #PanicRelief #SelfCare #Biohacking #WellnessTips #EndTheCycle #AnxietyRecovery #NoMorePanic #SteadyState #BodyWisdom #MindfulLiving #NutritionalPsychiatry #CaffeineFree #DecafLife #GlucoseGoddess #HealthyHabits #ACPSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Shoot us a Text.Episode #1276: The 2026 dealer census shows fewer franchise points but stronger per-store sales. Tesla resale values rise while other EVs slide post-tax-credit. And consumers are shifting away from big-ticket purchases, focusing instead on repairs, durability and value. The latest Automotive News dealer census shows a network that's slimming down—but getting stronger. As OEMs right-size their footprints, throughput is climbing and single-brand stores are on the rise. The U.S. starts 2026 with 18,300 dealerships—just 11 fewer than last year—but total franchise points dropped 1.5% to 29,387.Exclusive, single-brand stores rose 1.2% to 13,351 locations as automakers continue network consolidation strategies.Buick (-20%), Lincoln (-9.9%) and Jaguar (-25%) all shrank networks intentionally, boosting per-store performance in the process.Average franchise throughput across the industry climbed 4.1% to 532 vehicles in 2025, with Toyota leading at 1,736 units per store, up 8%.19 brands improved throughput in 2025 — but 24 saw declines, including 12 brands down more than 10%. As networks shrink, the gap between healthy franchises and struggling ones is widening fast. When the $7,500 EV tax credit disappeared, most used EV prices fell. Except Tesla. While mainstream electric models lost value and OEMs started discounting hard, Tesla resale prices actually climbed — changing the whole picture.Used Tesla prices rose 4.3% since the credit ended, while other used EVs dropped an average of 3.6%.Because Tesla makes up such a big slice of the market, overall used EV prices actually rose 3.5% — but that's a bit of a mirage.Lower-cost EVs like the Kona Electric, ID.4, Niro EV and Mach-E all lost around 5–6% in just a few months. The Porsche Taycan was the only non-Tesla model to see a price increase, at 4.1%Used EV market share fell 20% in four months, suggesting mainstream buyers aren't rushing in — even with heavy new-EV discounts.Consumers are still spending — just not on the big stuff. Higher interest rates and tight housing turnover pushed shoppers towards smaller upgrades and essential repairs in 2025 — a trend expected to continue through 2026.Spending slowed across income groups late in 2025, especially households under $40K and over $150K.Large discretionary purchases like furniture and mattresses slowed sharply, while décor, kitchen items and maintenance held up.Home improvement spending softened for a third straight year but remains above pre-pandemic levels.Today's show is brought to you by ESi-Q. We round it out with RentAHuman.ai dread relief via paper airplane databases, free Roller Coaster Tycoon, and Sir Ian McKellen on Colbert—still classy in the digital wasteland.Sponsors:DeleteMe - Get 20% off your DeleteMe plan when you go to JoinDeleteMe.com/GOG and use promo code GOG at checkout.SquareSpace - go to squarespace.com/GRUMPY for a free trial.
