We are here with actor, author, and activist Dominique Jackson. You Might Know Her From Pose, Strut, Chick Fight, American Horror Stories, Fantasmas, and American Gods. Dominique opened up to us about the writing process for her 2014 memoir The Transsexual From Tobago, how she learned to love Elektra Abundance Evangelista, and documenting her life as a model on the reality series Strut. Plus, we talked about her genre work as Bloody Mary in American Horror Stories, the upcoming documentary I'm Your Venus she executive produced about ballroom icon (and Paris Is Burning star) Venus Xtravaganza, and about the house she was looking at on House Hunters. This one really covered all the territory and we hope you love it as much as we do.  Patreon: www.patreon.com/youmightknowherfrom Follow us on social media: @youmightknowherfrom || @damianbellino || @rodemanne NYC Rat Academy Capybara: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Capybara Rodents of Unusual Size: https://princessbride.fandom.com/wiki/R.O.U.S. Nutria : https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nutria Snake vomiting up a cow (not capybara, sorry): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y9cUIlgCdso The Transexual from Tobago: https://www.amazon.com/Transsexual-Tobago-Revised-Dominique-Jackson/dp/1497512271 Professor Michael Roberson: https://oralhistory.columbia.edu/blog-posts/people/michael-roberson-and-ballroom-culture I'm Your Venus (documentary): https://tribecafilm.com/films/i-m-your-venus-2024 Paris Dupree: https://www.sydney-yaeko.com/paris-is-burning/paris-dupree Dorian Corey: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dorian_Corey Danielle Revlon, Octavia St Laurent, Moldayvia LaBeija, Duchess La Wong, Crystal LaBeija, Avis Pendavis Elektra in Pose: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gaCTsAV5nD4&t=18s Chastity Moore Tempress and Silk in The Jellicle Ball Reality show, Strut on Oxygen: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OgHl4jTsvt0 House Hunters Episode with Dominique and her partner, Edwin (S1, ep 182): https://play.max.com/video/watch/6ddc44aa-a1e6-4c83-8216-804fc9c2a7e2/8a0f53ff-8560-4173-a06c-a8acd41928fa Fight with Law Roach on Legendary: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4Dh8vEmilfo Miss World on American Gods: https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x7yq7ga Choked Jaboukie Young-White on her episode of Fantasmas: https://www.instagram.com/dominiquet.a.r.jackson/p/C7sLJS4P3xj/?img_index=1

The view from the top of the record heep. On today's Odd News+ episode, we discuss someone who has practically made a career out of setting records. Plus, flower-selection advice from the Middle-Aged Farmer's Almanac and an attempt to solve an airline puzzle. David Rush began his quest to set his first Guinness World Record just a few years ago. Now he finds himself at the head of the pack. Is there anyone else in his league? The Middle-Aged Farmer's Almanac has proven to be a resource of questionable value. We give it another chance to prove itself by consulting the guide on set up a flower garden. The lab mice (or what's left of them) are at it again. This time we sent them out to investigate a dilemma every traveler faces when selecting an airline seat: Aisle, Middle or Window? >> Hear episodes from all the participants in Dog Days of Podcasting>> Support comedy4cast by becoming a patron on Patreon>> Or you can get Clinton a Dunkin' card or a cup of coffee via Ko-Fi>> Follow us on X, Instagram, Facebook, MeWe, Mastodon, and BlueSky>> Give us a call via the Super Secret Phone Line (213) 290-4451>> Drop us an email at podcast @ comedy4cast.com>> Also check out Clinton's other podcast, The Topic is Trek>> Certain sounds effects heard on comedy4cast are courtesy of freeSFX and FreeSound.org Click here for a transcript of this episode.

Guardian journalist Sirin Kale's new podcast, Can I Tell You A Secret?, explores how a cyberstalker wreaked havoc across the internet and ruined people's lives. She chats to Jen about obsession, fear, the lives we lead online, and how the police and CPS are letting victims of cyberstalking down. Back on September 8, Hannah chatted to actors Kate Fahy and Marion Bailey about playing Margaret Thatcher and The Queen in Moira Buffini's play Handbagged. That's right, September 8. Just hours later the Queen died, and so we've held onto this interview for a little while. The play is still running (at The Kiln Theatre, London, until Oct 29) and Hannah, Kate and Marion's chat is still a corker. In JOTB, Jen's looking at various internationals and doing some announcer practice, and in BT, there's good energy, bad energy, and a whole lot of Hands. Plus, Mick girds her loins as she throws a much-loved film to the Rated or Dated wolves. Rob Reiner's 1987 fantasy adventure comedy The Princess Bride is a firm favourite in the Noonan household, but what do Hannah and Jen make of it? Working in media today feels weirdly similar to trying to navigate the Fire Swamp in the classic 1987 film The Princess Bride. Success is possible, but the path is surrounded by quicksand, Rodents of Unusual Size, and numerous other obstacles along the way. It’s tenuous at the best of times, and damn near impossible under trying circumstances—like during a pandemic, for example. It requires ingenuity, a propensity for risk, and a bit of gut feeling. Good Beer Hunting operates a little differently than many other media companies, in everything from the stories we tell to the revenue streams that support those stories. But if you’re looking for a complete history of GBH, this isn’t that podcast. In this conversation with Michael Kiser, co-founder and creative director, we focus on some of the meatier pieces GBH has published that, at first glance, fall outside most people’s expectations of beer media. Exploring subjects like non-disclosure agreements, concepts like hyperreality, historical deep-dives, and other topics far from the clickbait-esque model of contemporary media has positioned GBH as a … I’ll say unique figure in beer conversations. Michael and I discuss who we think is reading GBH and why; how conversations and beer culture have changed over the years, and how they’ve also stayed the same; our role in media and the beer industry at large; why making people mad is inevitable, and why it’s sometimes important; how balancing heady—and crucial—topics like racism against more lighthearted narratives sparks surprising, and sometimes dangerous, responses from readers; what stories have surprised him; and the ones he still wants to tell.

Volcanic craters could be the largest musical instrument on Earth, producing unique sounds that tell scientists what is going on deep in a volcano’s belly. Chile’s Villarica volcano acted much like a gigantic horn when it erupted in 2015, created reverberating sounds that changed pitch as its lava lake rose to the crater rim. On the other hand, Ecuador’s Cotopaxi volcano has a deep, cylindrical crater that acts much like a massive organ pipe. The crater produced strange sounds scientists dubbed tornillos, the Spanish word for screw, when Cotopaxi began rumbling in 2015. Jeffrey Johnson, a geophysicist at Boise State University, studies the unusual low-frequency sounds made by volcanic eruptions, earthquakes and avalanches. Understanding each volcano’s unique voiceprint could alert scientists to changes going on inside the crater that may signal an impending eruption, according to Jeff. In this episode, Jeff describes how volcanoes and earthquakes produce infrasound – sound waves below the frequency of human hearing – and how the size and shape of a volcano’s crater defines the range of vibrations it can produce. Listen to Jeff recount the strange sounds geophysicists noticed during the eruption of Mt. St. Helens in 1980 and hear how earthquakes can make mountains ring like giant bells. This episode was produced and mixed by Lauren Lipuma.

(The chevrotain is not a rodent. It has hooves. Episode 116 explains this creature): Show transcript: Welcome to Strange Animals Podcast. I’m your host, Kate Shaw. Yes, I know, last week I said we might have an episode this week about legless lizards and other snakey things that aren’t snakes, but I got this episode ready first so instead, this week we’re going to learn about some rodents of unusual size! Rodents are mammals in the order Rodentia, and there are thousands of them throughout the world. Mice and rats are rodents, of course, but so are chipmunks and squirrels, hamsters and gerbils, prairie dogs and guinea pigs, and many others. But you may notice that all the animals I just mentioned are pretty small. That’s because most rodents are on the small side. But not all of them. The biggest rodent alive today may be one you’ve heard of, the capybara. It’s native to much of South America and lives in forests, rainforests, and other areas, but always near water. It really likes water and eats a lot of aquatic plants, although it also eats grass, fruit, tree bark, and other plants. Like other rodents, its teeth grow throughout its life but constantly wear down as it eats tough plants. So how big is the capybara? It grows to about two feet tall, or 62 cm, and four feet long, or 1.3 meters. Females are usually a little larger than males. Basically they’re the size of a big dog, but a big dog with webbed toes, small ears, big blunt muzzle, basically no tail, and a calm outlook on life. Because unlike many rodents who tend to be nervous and quick-moving, the capybara is pretty chill. The capybara is semiaquatic and likes to hang out in the water, often in social groups. It can hold its breath underwater for up to five minutes, and can even sleep while submerged with just its nose above water. That’s why its nose, eyes, and ears are close to the top of its head, so it can be alert to predators while remaining safely underwater. The capybara has a scent gland on its nose called a morillo. The female has a morillo but the male’s is bigger since he scent marks more often by rubbing the gland on plants, trees, rocks, other capybaras, and so on. During mating season, the female capybara attracts a male by whistling through her nose, because who doesn’t like a lady who can whistle through her nose? The capybara will only mate in water, so if a female decides she doesn’t like a male, she just gets out of the water and walks away from him. The female usually gives birth to four or five babies in one litter. If the female is a member of a group of capybaras, all the babies stay together in the middle of the group and all the females care for them. In most mammals, the female will only let her own babies drink her milk, but a female capybara will suckle any babies in the group who are hungry. Like I said, they’re pretty chill. There are actually two species of capybara, but some people consider the lesser capybara to be a subspecies of capybara and anyway, we don’t know much about it. Other than that, though, the capybara is most closely related to the guinea pig. Like the guinea pig and like humans, the capybara can’t synthesize vitamin C in its body and has to get it through its diet. That means if a capybara in captivity doesn’t receive fruit and other plant material containing vitamin C, eventually it will show symptoms of scurvy. The capybara is killed for its meat and hide, but it’s also sometimes kept as a pet. It’s not a domesticated animal and it’s as heav...

Lost Bayou Ramblers’ Andre and Louis Michot Share The Story of Their 20 Year Partnership

Discover Lafayette

2019 marks the 20th anniversary of the founding of Lost Bayou Ramblers by Andre and Louis Michot. In this episode of Discover Lafayette, the brothers had just come back from a five-month touring hiatus and visited with Jan Swift about their journey to becoming an established international presence on the music scene. Worklight Pictures created the “rockumentary,” On Va Continuer, capturing the personal and professional story behind the band, whose members also include Johnny Campos (electronic guitarist), Eric Heigle (electronics and acoustic guitar), Bryan Webre (electric bassist) and drummer Kirkland Middleton. The film looks at the modern Cajun culture and the importance of sustaining the Cajun French language. Mark your calendar for the celebration of Lost Bayou Rambler’s 20th anniversary on September 28, 2019 and viewing of the film at the Acadiana Center for the Arts. Growing up, Andre and Louis performed Cajun music as members of Les Frères Michot, the band their father, Tommy Michot, and uncles formed in the 1980's. While they had taken lessons to learn guitar (Andre) and classical violin (Louis), their talent blossomed when they picked up instruments and taught themselves the intricacies of the accordion (Andre) and fiddle (Louis). Andre has actually mastered the art of building accordions as an adult musician, and the brothers have learned to play other instruments by ear and by watching each other as they jammed together and with Les Frere Michot. The Lost Bayou Rambler’s musical lyrics are performed solely in French, but the men didn’t grow up speaking the language. It took a solo journey by Louis to St. Anne’s University in Nova Scotia in 1998 to learn French and that is where he picked up the fiddle, using an instrument his grandfather had handed down. For Louis, learning the language was facilitated by singing the words and learning the rhythm as he played the fiddle on the streets. In August 1999, the brothers booked their first gig as a yet-to-be-named band at Café Rue Vermilion in downtown Lafayette. On the way, Louis stopped by to see his friend, the late Ryan Domingue, who asked what their name was. When Louis said, “We don’t have one,” Ryan offered up “Lost Bayou Ramblers” which both young men loved. For background on this story and information on the Rue Vermilion Revival and Flood Relief Fundraiser in 2016, visit here. Lost Bayou Ramblers received a Grammy nomination for its 2007 release of Live a la Blue Moon. In 2012, the band released Mammoth Waltz with the help of producer Korey Richey and guest artists Gordon Gano, Scarlett Johansson, and Dr. John. Mammoth Waltz was named #2 in the “Top 21 Louisiana albums of the 21st Century” by Times Picayune. Lost Bayou Ramblers’ contribution to the score of Beasts of the Southern Wild in 2012 brought them renown worldwide, and we end this interview with the haunting melody of their music from the film. After their live appearance on NPR’s World Café, Lost Bayou Ramblers was rated #1 on “David Dye’s five favorite live music moments in and out of the World Café studio.” And then, in 2017, the band won a Grammy for Best Regional Roots Music Album for Kalenda. The bands' performance on the 2017 PBS documentary series American Epic, solidified Lost Bayou Ramblers' international reputation as an iconic Cajun band. Lost Bayou Ramblers recently released their score to the highly acclaimed and award-winning Rodents of an Unusual Size, which aired on PBS earlier this year. The film documents the unusual relationships people have with the large rodents. The music was released on March 29 and is available via Bandcamp on CD, and all major streaming and paid download sites. You can check out the music here. The spoken words of Louis and Andre are inspirational and engaging. Their story is worth a listen. Thanks to the brothers for sharing their journey.

Jeff was born in an abandoned town in the California desert, raised in Hawaii, and educated at USC Film School. After working at a dilapidated film studio in Russia, he began to edit for the likes of NBC, Paramount, Warner Bros, Capitol Records, and Lucasfilm's Skywalker Ranch. Craving the unexpected, Jeff directed the offbeat feature documentary Plagues and Pleasures on the Salton Sea, which was narrated by John Waters. The film screened at 200 film festivals worldwide, winning 37 awards for Best Documentary. After living in London and Berlin, Jeff has gone on to shoot several feature documentaries, including Everyday Sunshine: The Story of Fishbone, which was narrated by actor Laurence Fishburne. Jeff lived in Afghanistan to edit the documentary In-Justice, about women imprisoned for supposed moral crimes. He also directed and photographed several short docs and an Emmy-nominated special for the show Artbound for KCET in Los Angeles. Jeff most recently directed and photographed the acclaimed documentary, Rodents of Unusual Size, about giant invasive swamp rats called nutria, who are threatening coastal Louisiana.

Hard headed Louisiana fisherman Thomas Gonzales doesn't know what will hit him next. After decades of hurricanes and oil spills he faces a new threat - hordes of monstrous 20 pound swamp rats. Known as "nutria", these invasive South American rodents breed faster than the roving squads of hunters can control them. And with their orange teeth and voracious appetite they are eating up the coastal wetlands that protects Thomas and his town of Delacroix Island from hurricanes. But the people who have lived here for generations are not the type of folks who will give up without a fight. Thomas and a pack of lively bounty hunters are hellbent on saving Louisiana before it dissolves beneath their feet. It is man vs. rodent. May the best mammal win. Rodents of Unusual Size is a documentary by Quinn Costello, Chris Metzler and Jeff Springer (Everyday Sunshine,The Story of Fishbone). Co-director Jeff Springer join us to talk about the other ‘beast of the Southern wild.” For news and updates go to: rodentsofunusualsize.tv

Eureka!: California History

Welcome to the very first episode of Eureka! (I'm so excited! Brace yourselves for WAY too many exclamation points!) I wanted to start us off with a topic that was perfectly, inarguably, quintessentially "California"... and there's nothing more "California" than our iconic state bear flag! When I started researching this topic, I honestly figured it would be a 5-minute introductory episode to get me warmed up in the podcasting game. Who knew that the history of the bear flag involved a kidnapping-turned-wine-tasting, a bet with William Randolph Hearst, and a relative of President Lincoln? As promised, I have a few visuals to go along with the episode! Behold, friends... {cue dream sequence}... First off, the Todd flag, designed by William L. Todd, cousin of future first lady Mary Todd Lincoln- widely considered to be the very first version of our California state bear flag! Tell me I'm not crazy. Does W. Todd's "grizzly bear" not bear striking resemblance (sorry, pun intended) to a Rodent of Unusual Size from The Princess Bride movie? My husband thinks it looks like a capybara. I can't argue with that. Since we're having fun being catty about flags (something I never thought I'd write), how about The Pico Flag? Apologies for the picture quality, but OMG. I friggin' love that Pico flag. I also really love Monarch the grizzly bear, although I wish he could've lived out the rest of his majestic bear life in the wild. Oh, Monarch, you magnificent beast. RIP, Big Fella. And a bonus gift! Allen Kelley's book "Bears I Have Met," where he describes his relationship with Monarch. (The title alone, you guys.) THIS. I want our Christmas card this year to have an "Allen Kelly 'Bearhunter'" motif. And finally, now that you're all hopped up on California state pride, I've got a whole bunch of my most favorite bear flag themed goodies pinned on our Pinterest page (@eurekacahistory). Hoodies and coasters and car decals, oh my! Here are a few to whet your proverbial appetite. (I don't get any kickbacks from these links... I just love the items!) Like this wall art made out of an old wine barrel, from eWoodArtCarvings on etsy. Or this perfectly adorable grocery tote, from LesFugitives on etsy. The coolest hand-painted welcome mat, from NickelDesignsShop on etsy. And Baby Leggings! For a baby shower gift that doesn't suck, from BabalusByLucy on etsy. That's it, gang. Join me next time for another chapter of California history (and ooooh, it's a GOOD one! I'm bursting at the seams to tell!). Keep learning, and have a sunshiney day! Transcript of Episode 1: California State Bear Flag Hello, hello, gang, and thank you so much for joining me on this inaugural Episode #1: California State Bear Flag. Obviously, we’re starting off the Eureka podcast with a little vexillology… aka the study of flags. More than any other state flag, California’s bear flag is truly a symbol of the state itself.  Full disclosure here: I lived in New York for several years, and there’s absolutely no way that I could point the New York state flag out of a line-up. California’s state flag is ubiquitous. Everybody knows it. It’s come to represent the California lifestyle as a sort of pop culture icon. In shops all over the country, I’ve seen t-shirts, car decals, welcome mats, even cufflinks featuring the artwork of our state flag. Californians love their flag! I figured something this emblematic merited its own episode in our California history podcast. So- as is always the case with history- let’s start at the beginning. The very beginning. As in 1542, when the flag of the Spanish Empire was planted in California soil (San Diego to be exact) by Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo, who’d been hoping to discover the mythical Strait of Anian- a water route across North America. Instead, he found California, and our future state had its very first flag.
