First, we talk CSI Con Buffalo (coming soon!), a new study on how pigeons find their way, and the passing of an ad man who coined Ben's favorite skeptical phrase. Then we look back at a video taken at a gas station just outside Lima, Peru, in 2016 that perplexed viewers around the world. This is a great example to show the difference between hasty, dismissive skepticism and a truly thorough dive into solving the mystery. Ben peels back layer after layer until we have a hefty basket of clues that add up to a good conclusion. It all begins with an initial look at a video for the show "Strange Evidence," where Ben's heavily edited appearance was among the experts who were baffled (according to the narrator, anyway). From there, Ben collected more and more information and ended up in Peru himself, retracing steps at the gas station and finding even more surprising pieces of the puzzle. How does a non-mystery evolve into a mystery? In this case it had help from Anthony Choy, a Peruvian mystery-monger, as well as some quiet eye-witnesses and over-eager news media and public.

Tonight we're pulling off the highway for this one. Somewhere between mile markers on the Backwoods Cryptid Road Trip, an email came in that I couldn't drive past, so we're parking in the gravel for a while to hear it. A man who's listened to just about everything I've put out finally wrote down something he'd carried alone for forty years, and he sent it to me because he trusts how I handle a story.He was nineteen, deep in the military in the mid-1980s, out on an extended field problem in mountain country so remote that help was a full day away if anything went wrong. His commanding officer briefed them on bears and big cats and told them to keep their heads on a swivel, that this wasn't the kind of country that announces itself. By the third day, his element of six men had found crude shelters built from bent saplings woven together with living vines, and the birds had gone silent across the whole drainage.What happened that night is the reason he's telling it now. White points of light with no source to reflect them, hanging six feet off the ground in the dark. Vocalizations from opposite slopes that climbed past anything an animal should be able to make, answering each other across the men's position. A smell that came in waves as something circled them. Rocks the size you don't throw by hand, dropped inside their perimeter close enough to kick dirt in a man's face, placed like a warning rather than an attack.One of them breaking branches at slow, even intervals as it walked right up to a soldier's position and just stood there, breathing. And in the gray light before dawn, through their night vision, three of them at the tree line. One very large, two smaller by a foot or two and skinnier, restless, hanging back.The way the three of them moved off together didn't look like animals scattering. Light, energy, and beauty are the subjects of my work. My light sculptures are inspired by the fluid grace and endless variation in form of the inhabitants of our translucent seas and botanical realms. With electricity, I transform the noble gasses Krypton, Neon, Xenon and Argon, illuminating my glass forms to show the color and energy of life. Glass, at once translucent and reflective, contains the light, as the form and energy are revealed. Thus, my invisible feelings of love for the natural world appear as "jewels of light in glass." Candice went on to say: “The Hallmark of all my work is light coming out of the darkness” Light brings life. It helps define our world and shows us the way. Painting is my main medium, but I wanted to work with Neon to work with actual light. And it was exciting to work with colored light that comes off the tube and into the room and changes everything it touches. It was fascinating to work with colored light of neon, and the different pigment colors of paint and how they interacted with each other. An interesting detail, the definition for Candice (kan'dis) from ancient Greek means glowing. Candice has worked in the mediums of: painting, figure drawing, neon and plasma sculpture — and she also sings. Out of them all, her favorite remains painting.
