This is a free preview of a paid episode. To hear more, visit wisdomofcrowds.liveWe live in an increasingly weird world, where the weirdness is facilitated and accelerated by the Internet. We live in a world full of instantly-available bizarre pornography and terrorist attacks inspired by misanthropic ideologies whose manifestos are published online. Katherine Dee, an Internet ethnographer, writer and friend of Wisdom of Crowds, joins Christine Emba and Shadi Hamid to talk about the recent terrorist attack on an IVF clinic in California and Christine's recent New York Times article about the social damage wrought by porn.Shadi shakes things up by posing a blunt question at the very beginning: Should we ban porn? It hurts men as well as women. Why not? Can we reconcile the ideals of liberalism with a state effort to suppress pornographic content? This question inspires Christine and Katherine to reflect about the ethics of sex work, the perils of reporting on dangerous and soul-crushing topics, as well as signs of hope in American culture.Throughout, Katherine applies her trusty reporter's eye toward making an accurate, non-judgmental and perceptive account of what's really going on with sex and ideology on the Internet. Christine, for her part, makes the case of norms and shame as useful tools for making society better. Shadi, in Socratic fashion, tests the strength of his interlocutors' arguments. In the bonus section for paid subscribers, Katherine explains the nuances of “efilism” and “promortalism”; Shadi reflects on the meaning of suffering and how belief in God changes one's approach to suffering; and Christine reflects on “cold, rational logical measure — suffering v. pleasure. Pleasure v. nothing.”Required Reading and Listening:* Christine Emba, “The Delusion of Porn's Harmlessness” (New York Times). * Katherine Dee, “An Efilist Just Bombed a Fertility Clinic. In the official offshoot of the OLYMPUS HAS FALLEN series, I review the French-UK produced PARIS HAS FALLEN (currently streaming on Hulu). Is the material as engaging as the surprisingly decent reviews indicated? How is the MI6 spy agency and the French gov't utilized into the story arc? Will it be even more addicting for the 24 and NCIS crowd seeking more military espionage adventure? And which key bad guy actor from the MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE films plays yet another scary bad apple? Purpose is a factor of life that every man knows will improve his quality of life. Unfortunately, we seem to be in an era when purpose is increasingly abysmal in the lives of too many men. Men in all walks and stages of life are floundering around aimlessly, wondering why they're anxious, depressed, and alone. My guest today, Garrett Unclebach, former Navy SEAL, is a man who is intimately familiar with why and how purpose drives men to step up, take charge of their lives, and succeed. We unpack why a man must look beyond himself, how surrendering in certain circumstances could lead you to an incredible place you've never considered, the power of equanimity and how to cultivate it, why being faithful when you have nothing leads to a life of prosperity and abundance, and how to judge what you should be doing and who you should be doing it with. In the seventy-fifth episode of the American Experiment Podcast, Grace, Kathryn, and Bill dive into Governor Walz's latest round of self-congratulations—this time for handing out what they're calling “participation diplomas.” He's bragging about graduation rates and free meals, while ignoring the fact that half of Minnesota students can't read or do math.Next, an illegal immigrant arrested and held in Hennepin County is drawing national attention, including from the White House. Then, the Senate is at it again—this time pushing to raise taxes on Minnesotans to fund health care for illegal immigrants. You read that right. Welcome back to another Weekly Update where hopefully I'm helping you stay 10 steps ahead of the chaos at the intersection of business, tech, and the human experience. This week's update is loaded as usual and includes everything from Google transforming the foundation of search as we know it, to a creepy new step in digital identity verification, real psychological risks emerging from AI overuse, and a quiet but powerful wake-up call for working parents everywhere. With that, let's get into it.⸻Google AI Mode Is Here — and It Might Change EverythingNo, this isn't the little AI snapshot you've seen at the top of Google. This is a full-fledged “AI Mode” being built directly into the search interface, powered by Gemini and designed to fundamentally shift how we interact with information. I break down what's really happening here, the ethical concerns around data and consent, and why this might be the beginning of the end for traditional SEO. I also explore what this means for creators, brands, and anyone who relies on discoverability in a post-search world.⸻Scan to Prove You're Human? Worldcoin Says YesSam Altman's Worldcoin just launched the Orb Mini. And yes, it looks as weird as it sounds. Basically, it's designed to scan your iris to verify you're human. While it's being sold as a solution to digital fraud, this opens up a massive can of worms around privacy, surveillance, and centralization of identity. I talk through the bigger picture: why this isn't going away, what it signals about the direction of trust on the internet, and what risks we face if this becomes the default model for online authentication.⸻AI Is Warping Our Minds — LiterallyA growing number of people are reporting delusions, emotional dependence, and psychological confusion after spending too much time with AI chatbots. However, it's more than anecdotes; the data is starting to back it up. I'm not fear-mongering, but I am calling attention to a growing cognitive threat that's being ignored. In this segment, I explore why this is happening, how AI may not be creating the problem (but absolutely amplifying it), and how to guard against falling into the same trap. If AI is just reflecting what's already there… what does that say about us?⸻Parent Wake-Up Call: A Child's Drawing Said Too MuchA viral story about a mom seeing herself through her child's eyes hit me hard. When her son drew a picture of her too busy at her laptop to answer him, it wasn't meant as a criticism, but it became a revelation. I share my own reflections on work-life integration, why this isn't just a remote work problem, and how we need to think bigger than “just go back to the office.” If we don't pause and reset, we may look back and realize we modeled a version of success that quietly erased everything that mattered most.⸻If this resonated with you or gave you something to think about, drop a comment, share with a friend, and be sure to subscribe so you don't miss what's next.Show Notes:In this weekly update, host Christopher Lind explores the major shifts reshaping the digital and human landscape. Topics include Google's new AI Mode in Search and its implications for discoverability and data ethics, the launch of Worldcoin's Orb Mini and the future of biometric identity verification, and a disturbing trend of AI chatbots influencing user beliefs and mental health. Christopher also reflects on a powerful story about work-life balance, generational legacy, and why intentional living matters more than ever in the age of AI.00:00 – Introduction00:56 – Google AI Mode Launch & SEO Impact18:07 – Worldcoin's Orb Mini & Human Verification32:58 – AI, Delusion, and Psychological Risk44:28 – A Child's Drawing & The Cost of Disconnection54:46 – Final Thoughts and Challenge#FutureOfSearch #AIethics #DigitalIdentity #MentalHealthAndAI #WorkLifeHarmony

Episode sponsor: Eastern Washington University Episode URL: https://planning.org/podcast/critical-conversations-in-transportation-planning-wes-marshall-and-trung-vo-aicp/ In this episode, co-hosts Divya Gandhi and Em Hall were excited to take the podcast show on the road, recording episodes at the 2025 National Planning Conference in Denver. This dispatch of Critical Conversation in Transportation Planning kicks off our safety series and features Wes Marshall, PhD, PE, a professor of civil engineering at the University of Colorado Denver, and Trung Vo, AICP, PE, Denver Office Director, Senior Planner, and Owner at Toole Design. Our speakers highlight how many traffic engineering standards are based on flawed assumptions rather than science, specifically pointing to problems with level of service metrics, automatic traffic growth assumptions, and designing for peak hours rather than community needs. They emphasize the need for courage to tackle arterial roads where most fatalities occur, challenging the reactive approach of waiting for crashes to happen instead of proactively designing safer streets for all users. In this episode, Mosh sits down with Chris Whipple, author of the new book Uncharted: How Trump Beat Biden, Harris, and the Odds in the Wildest Campaign in History for a behind-the-scenes look at the tight-lipped four years of the Biden Administration. Whipple interviewed several former White House staffers–including Biden's former Chief of Staff, Ron Klain–about Biden's decline before and during his presidency, and what he calls a “fog of delusion and denial” in the President's inner circle leading into the 2024 campaign. He takes us inside Camp David for the prep before his disastrous June 27 debate, and the chaos in the Democratic party during the three weeks after the debate until Biden's decision to drop out. It's also a story of personalities in Washington: the complicated relationship between Biden and Barack Obama, why Kamala Harris' loyalty may have contributed to her failed campaign, and why President Trump's Chief of Staff, Susie Wiles, might have a better handle on him than anyone who held the role in his first term.
This lecture discusses key ideas from the 20th century German philosopher, sociologist of knowledge, and phenomenologist, Max Scheler's work Ressentiment, which provides an interpretation of Friedrich Nietzsche's concept of that same name. It focuses on on his discussion about how "value blindness" and "value delusion" figure into the dynamic of ressentiment. In the course of this discussion, Scheler references his earlier work Formalism in Ethics and Non-Formal Ethics of Values, where he develops these concepts in relation to hierarchies of values. Jodie and Andrea are kicking off our new movie series with Heavenly Creatures, not just Melanie Lynskey's film debut, but a true crime story that's full of themes that Yellowjackets keeps circling: queerness, violence, fantasy, and the messy emotional world of teenage girls. It's also directly referenced in the show's original pitch deck, making it the perfect place to start.Next week, we're diving into Richard Donner's 1985 coming-of-age adventure classic The Goonies. It shows up in Season 3, and while it might seem like a big shift from Heavenly Creatures, at its core, it's a story about intense young bonds, kids chasing escape, and the ways adults shape the world around them. So if you ignore the brutal real-life murder, it's really not that far off.Recommended Reading:“Let's Moider Mother: Heavenly Creatures and the Politics of Delusion” by Betty Jay“Heavenly Creatures Is a Queer Adolescent Nightmare” by Drew Burnett GregoryIf you're reading this, that means you've probably got your podcatcher of choice open right now. Our evolutionary heritage instills and reinforces the dream of self and other and blinds us to how little is actually within our control. Everything begins to open up when we drop our demands and learn to work with things as they are. Teisho by Sensei John Pulleyn. Are traffic engineering decisions based on evidence-based research? Not as much as you might think. If you've seen a car crash on the side of the road, you might look at it and think that the person at fault is the driver. But how much blame should be shared by the people who designed those roads in the first place?Well, some traffic engineers are calling for the field to accept more blame for the crashes and the tens of thousands of annual fatalities that happen on our roads, including Dr. Wes Marshall, a professor of civil engineering at the University of Colorado Denver. In his book Killed By A Traffic Engineer: Shattering the Delusion that Science Underlies our Transportation System, he digs into the standards that have dictated traffic design for decades to find out exactly how much science they're based on. Spoiler alert: It's a lot less than you'd think.Host Flora Lichtman sits down with Dr. Marshall to talk about how we got to this point and what a safer version of our streets could look like.Transcript for this segment will be available after the show airs on sciencefriday.com. Will Lori's Vallow Daybell's Choice To Rest Her Own Defense Result In A New Conviction, Attorney Eric Faddis Talks What kind of defendant stares down a murder trial and simply says, “Nah, I'm good”? Lori Vallow Daybell, in true Lori fashion, closed her defense with a theatrical nothing. No witnesses, no argument, no Nephi-fueled sermon from the stand—just a mic drop and a courtroom scratching their heads. Was it confidence? Delusion? Or just someone finally too tired to spin the celestial wheel one more time? Former felony prosecutor Eric Faddis joins Tony Brueski to unravel Lori's courtroom curveball, dig into what the prosecution didn't quite prove, and question whether her silence was strategy or surrender. Between coded religious lingo, the ghost of Charles Vallow, and the judge playing a game of legal training wheels, this episode peels back the chaos behind the calm. Was Lori Vallow Daybell spiritually justified—or dangerously deluded? In this episode of Profiling Evil, we break down Lori's Arizona murder trial for the death of her fourth husband, Charles Vallow. We analyze her courtroom behavior, religious references, and contradictory opening statement… and we ask the tough questions. Did Lori confess—accidentally or not—during her Rule 20 motion? Why are prosecutors painting her as a self-righteous killer? And is she loving the spotlight too much? They couldn’t—or wouldn’t—tell Biden it was time to go. Journalist Chris Whipple reveals the human drama behind the political failure, captured in his must-read book Uncharted. Why did no one stop Joe Biden from running again? In this eye-opening interview, Chris and Katie pull back the curtain on the 2024 election, delving into the loyalty, fear, and misjudgment that shaped the race.
Author Chris Whipple says Biden's family and closest advisors operated in denial regarding his ability to serve another term: "There's no doubt that they were protecting the president." Whipple spoke with campaign insiders to get a behind-the-scenes look at what happened in 2024. His book is Uncharted: How Trump Beat Biden, Harris, and the Odds in the Wildest Campaign in History. Our book critic Maureen Corrigan shares an appreciation of The Great Gatsby for its 100th anniversary.Learn more about sponsor message choices: podcastchoices.com/adchoicesNPR Privacy Policy
