Dave Watson, Everton's most-recent trophy-winning captain, is Chris Beesley's latest guest on Goodison Park: My Home. The centre-half was the Blues' skipper when they defeated Sir Alex Ferguson's Manchester United side 1-0 in the 1995 FA Cup final and recalls an incredible story about what happened to the famous silverware that night after the Wembley victory. Scouser Watson, who grew up on Boundary Street, close to the new Everton Stadium, started his professional career across Stanley Park with Liverpool – for whom his brother Alex later played – but never made a first team appearance before joining Norwich City in 1980. While with the Canaries, he made his England debut, winning his first of 12 caps for the Three Lions, in a 2-0 win over Brazil in the Maracana Stadium before lifting the League Cup the following year. He returned to his home city in 1986 when Howard Kendall snapped him up for Everton for a then club record £900,000 fee and was part of their last League Championship-winning side in his first season at Goodison Park. Now 63, Watson made 528 appearances for the Blues – the third highest in history behind Neville Southall (751) and Brian Labone (534) – and also had a stint as caretaker manager in 1997 following Joe Royle's exit before having a season in charge of Tranmere Rovers in 2001/02 to serve all three of Merseyside's professional football clubs. I'm all alone in British Columbia, or BC for your shortform heads out there. And when I say "I'm" I mean "Judah am." That's right, I'm away and I realized I won't be home in time to get this episode recorded with Ben. In fact, I didn't even consult him at all about this before recording it. Some friend, huh? Also! Suj and James review a dramatic weekend in FPL as James played an accidental Free Hit, but at least went with Cody Gakpo who hauled ahead of Double Gameweek 24. A double that features a Merseyside Derby, so Everton assets appeal along with Reds players from across Stanley Park. But how good is this Liverpool double? They'll start against Bournemouth who are absolutely flying and walloped third placed Nottingham Forest 5-0; Justin Kluivert and Antoine Semenyo both scored again, but it was OOP Dango Ouattara who claimed the match ball this time. There's discussion on Arne Slot Assistant Manager versus Mo Salah Triple Captaincy, how Trent Alexander-Arnold purred against Ipswich on Saturday and what to do if managers feel like they've picked the wrong Liverpool assets. Plus, as usual all the games reviewed, including coverage of the tactics in Manchester City's victory against Chelsea, the Myles Lewis-Skelly red card controversy in Arsenal's victory at Wolves and what now for Ange Postecoglu, following another disaster for Tottenham, as they were beaten at home by struggling Leicester?
Next week, Vancouver City Council will debate whether to spend $4M for yet another plan for South False Creek, $3M to continue cutting diseased Hemlock trees in Stanley Park, a motion to install water meters on all Vancouver buildings, Green Party Councillor Adrienne Carr's resignation and lots more. Appropriately, Kevin Sheedy is guest number 11 on Goodison Park: My Home. The owner of the greatest left foot in Blues' history joins the ECHO's Everton reporter Chris Beesley to discuss his amazing football journey. Kevin reveals the unusual way in which he first learned his incredible technique as a youngster and how his arrival on Merseyside could have taken a very different path when he signed for Liverpool! However, after a frustrating spell at Anfield, he would make the bold move across Stanley Park and never looked back. One of the most-cultured performers in Howard Kendall's side during the glory days, Kevin recalls playing a leading role in some of Everton's greatest nights against the likes of Bayern Munich and sealing the European Cup-Winners' Cup triumph against Rapid Vienna in Rotterdam. Other famous strikes in the conversation include his brace in the 5-0 rout against Manchester United; ‘saluting' the Kop after a stunning free kick in a Merseyside Derby and, of course, his famous twice-taken free kick against Ipswich Town. “If the Ghostbusters and the Scooby-Doo gang got stoned together in Stanley Park and Frankensteined a high-larious single-camera sitcom, it would probably look something like Paranormal Solutions Inc.” That's how our valiant host Sabrina Rani Furminger opened an article she wrote in 2016 for the Westender newspaper about the first season of Paranormal Solutions Inc., a fabulous series from the funniest people in Vancouver. Eight years later – and nearly 10 years after visiting their set in Gastown where they filmed much of season one – the Paranormal Solutions Inc. gang is back, with season two. This time around, the PSI gang is even funnier, more of a collective hot mess, and getting themselves into even zanier and grosser paranormal situations than in season one, even serving up a delightful smorgasbord of homages to some of our favourite horror properties, from The Blair Witch Project to Halloween to The Shining to Cujo – and, for some reason, there's also a lot of kale. Paranormal Solutions Inc. stars David Milchard, Julia Benson, Nicholas Carella, Daniel Bacon, Diana Bang, Christina Sicoli, and Matt Clarke, with cameos from local favourites like Sara Canning and Jordan Connor. It's produced by Tilt 9 Entertainment and executive produced by another long list of our favourites: Milchard, Carella, Clarke, Michelle Ouellet, and Dylan Collingwood. In this rambunctious episode, Sabrina is joined by Nicholas Carella and Matthew Clarke to talk about the how's and why's and WTF's (including the joys and challenges of acting opposite a taxidermied rodent) of this side-splitting horror comedy series. Jim Boardman and Jay Reid return after a short break just as proper football has been stopped again for another international break. As good a time as any to take stock on the season so far and how Liverpool have adapted to life under the new boss, Arne Slot, and his boss, Richard Hughes. As Jay and Jim discuss, the season has started as well as either could have asked for, with just one defeat in all competitions and the Reds top of the Premier League, still in the League Cup and joint top – goal difference aside - in the Champions League. Given how the summer window went, maybe that's a better position than anyone expected for Liverpool. With just one player added to the ranks – in the already well-equipped front line – and many more players leaving whether at the end of their contracts or because offers were made that the club didn't want to turn down, it was a long way from being a dream window. Maybe it's too early to say if that will hurt as the season goes on, but Jim wonders if it was a calculated risk by the club to give both Slot and Hughes more time to really assess what the budget should be spent on? Part of the reason the club are doing so well might be down to the lack of generosity being shown to opposition forwards. Two goals conceded in the League, one in the Champions League, one in the League Cup. That's down in no small part to Slot having at his disposal such a top-quality centre-back pairing, one which Jay argues may be the best in the world. As good as they both are, and as hard as it would be to displace them, should we be looking for extra backup for those slots beyond Quansah and Gomez? The last line of defence, when all is well, is the best goalkeeper in the world, Alisson Becker, who has saved Liverpool far too many times to remember, and that's just this season. Sadly, he's not the most injury-free keeper in the world, and as Jim and Jay discuss, maybe that injury record was part of the reason for signing a new keeper for next season, one who might be more than a number two to the Brazilian, without being a number one. It's explained better on the podcast. With the Reds' international players busy for their countries the inevitable interview quotes keep coming in, and with Liverpool fans waiting to hear if new contracts will be signed by certain key players those quotes can sometimes carry more weight than they should. It does feel as though it would take a monumental mess-up for Virgil Van Dijk not to sign for at least a couple more years, whereas with Salah it's hard to tell what will happen, he's still too good to drop down to Saudi football, but will Liverpool offer him enough financially to stay around? With Trent it seems odd to even be considering the idea he might not sign a new deal, or that he'd only be offered one well below his worth to the club. He's living the dream that Jay and Jim had back when they were kids, the dream of any Liverpool fan growing up on Merseyside and beyond, so won't that be enough to keep him at Anfield? Well, that's where those quotes come in, with him talking about what he's going to be looking back on when his career comes to an end. Is he hinting at going somewhere where trophies might be easier to come by? As Jim and Jay point out, would those trophies mean anything like as much as winning them in the Red shirt of his own childhood dreams? The international break also reduces the hilarity that flows so naturally across Stanley Park from the neighbours, but that's fine, they aren't the only side whose name begins with ‘E' to give us all a lot to laugh about. Join Ian Croll, Joe Thomas & Gav Buckland as they look back at a famous Merseyside Derby win under the lights at Goodison Park. A superb display gave Everton their first Merseyside Derby on home turf since October 2010 as they beat Liverpool 2-0. Blues fans mocked their neighbours by chanting "you lost the league at Goodison Park" after goals from Jarrad Branthwaite and Dominic Calvert-Lewin either side of the break gave Sean Dyche's side a richly-deserved three points to hand defeat to Jurgen Klopp on his last trip across Stanley Park. Last week, a large memorial was installed near the entrance to Stanley Park in Vancouver. The flags planted in a large grassy area are a visual representation of the number of lives lost due to Israel's ongoing assault on Gaza, and a reminder of Canada's role in funding the slaughter. This Vancouver installation follows a number of displays across the country and internationally, including in Portland and London. Lorraine Chisholm speaks about the memorial with organizer and community advocate Tamer Abu-Ramadan.

Episode 301: In episode thirteen of Dark Poutine, we covered the Babes in the Woods case, a tragic and long-unsolved mystery from Vancouver. In 1953, the skeletal remains of two children were discovered in Stanley Park, one of Vancouver's largest urban parks. What made this case, particularly haunting was that the children were found with a hatchet that appeared to have been used to end their lives. The identities of the two children remained unknown for almost 70 years until, in 2022, using DNA genealogy, the Vancouver Police were able to identify the boys believed to have died sometime in 1947. They were seven-year-old Derek and six-year-old David D'Alton. Their mother, Eileen Bousquet, who died in 1996, told relatives at the time that social services had taken the boys as she was unable to care for them. No one knows for sure what happened leading up to their deaths, and as so much time has passed, it is doubtful we ever will. At least they have their names back.
