Welcome to the fourth episode of series 4, where we've been focusing on the educators, activists, and influencers who inspire and guide us. However, because this week is Trans Awareness Week, we're taking a short break from hosting guests to focus on the trans community and how cis people can be better supporters and allies. We're using information from the excellent Schuyler Bailar, the Human Rights Campaign, and PFLAG to guide this conversation and we've linked back to all of these educators & organizations (and more) below. We start off by running through Schuyler Bailar's "cheat sheet" about how to re-frame the language you use when talking about, or interacting with, transgender people. We then move through a list of disinformation, anti-trans tropes and rhetoric that many people believe to be true, and dispel the myths around each item. We discuss the importance of moving away from the patriarchal gender binary and how we can support each other, and the trans, non-binary and LGBTQ+ community in general by leaving behind harmful and false heteronormative gender expectations. If you learned something from this episode, please share with those you know and love who may need more education on this important topic. Elle talks about recent elections in the United States, the politics of being transgender, and therefore the ways in which our bodies are politicized in a hierarchical gender binary whether we choose it or not. She explores the benefits and drawbacks of being invisible to society, including a brief description of Resmaa Menakem's work on bodily trauma in My GrandMother's Hands. She also references Alok V. Menon's work, and the power of nonbinary experience. In real life, it's considered kinda sh*tty to ghost someone. But on social media, there are some times when it's ok to ghost people who comment on your stuff. When? Why? And some examples of actual comments I have ignored, and who I look to for examples of responding to people on the internet with hateful opinions. In this episode, I mention: Alok V Menon on Instagram @alokvmenon My 30-minute Zoom coaching sessions aka chai play dates, where I coach you on anything copy or marketing-related (for free). “You're not a feminist if you deny someone the ability to have agency over their own life.” Last time we left y'all with a dense topic like this we got down and dirty into sexuality, sexual orientations and gender identities - so we figured it was time for a little bit of context! This week Kelly takes us into a brief overview of some history on the sex and gender binary (with loads of help from Alok V Menon's book reports on instagram). The episode starts with some deep-diving into some terminology to help us get our bearings; Kelly goes over what social constructs are, why they are important and why their influence is valid before giving us a lil mini education on the differences between the terms race and ethnicity. After we've grounded ourselves in a bit of formal understanding on the topic, Kelly expands on these ideas and how they're culturally relevant to our lives today, particularly in reference to the rise in TERF (trans-exclusionary radical feminism) ideology, incel (involuntary celibate) culture, and what biological determinism and essentialism has to do with any of it. Finally, the episode wraps up with Lorena getting into how she believes these binaries and their historical construction have affected the spiritual community, both online and offline. Meanwhile, Kelly waxes poetic about their utopian ideal of a world without binaries and how to them it offers us a world without limitations. Alok V. Menon is as much of a light in this world as they are willing to hold and be with the darkness and I am so honored that they took the time to speak with me. Alok has been very open and generous with making sure that the conversation around pain and chronic illness is shared with as many people as possible and that we open that conversation to the world, whether it's ready or not. Alok is a gender non-conforming writer and performance artist. Their distinctive style and poetic challenge to the gender binary have been internationally renowned. As a mixed-media artist, Alok uses poetry, comedy, performance, lecture, sound-art, fashion design, and self-portraiture to explore themes of gender, race, trauma, belonging, and the human condition. They are the author of Femme in Public (2017) and Beyond the Gender Binary (2020). In 2019 they were selected as one of NBC's Pride 50 and Out Magazine's OUT 100. In this episode, Alok shares their struggle with self-acceptance and how they reclaimed their authenticity despite being surrounded by intolerance, how pain brings us together, recognizing that life is pain, why we need to realize that everyone is suffering, and so much more!
