S3E29: Busy Philipps – A Beautiful Space for Peace & Freedom To Exist

The Hoffman Podcast

Photo by Autumn De Wilde Busy Philipps, New York Times Best-Selling author, actor, activist, and mother, is our guest today on the Hoffman Podcast. Listen in as Busy speaks with Drew about her time at the Process. Busy tells us that through the Process she found her way out of awareness hell, something we learn about at the Process. (Listen in to learn about awareness hell.) She also gained Process tools and practices she now uses each day. Busy now experiences a beautiful space where peace and freedom exist. Passionate and articulate, Busy also shares about her activism around reproductive justice. We are grateful for this conversation. More About Busy Philipps Busy currently stars in the comedy series GIRLS5EVA, produced by Tina Fey, now streaming on Peacock. The series centers on a one-hit-wonder girl group from the '90s who try for another chance at pop stardom. In 2020, Philipps launched her podcast Busy Philipps Is Doing Her Best. The show features conversations between Philipps and her creative partner, Caissie St. Onge, and their guests, who reflect on times in their lives when a setback led to better opportunities. From 2018 to 2019, Philipps was the host of the late-night talk show BUSY TONIGHT. Philipps served as executive producer on the show, alongside Tina Fey. In 2018, Philipps released a collection of humorous autobiographical essays in her book THIS WILL ONLY HURT A LITTLE that was immediately a New York Times Best Seller the first week. The book offers unfiltered and candid stories and was published by Simon and Schuster's Touchstone division. Philipps has also used her voice as an advocate and activist. In 2019, she joined the Advisory Board of SeeHer, testified before Congress on reproductive rights after publicly discussing her own abortion, and launched the #youknowme campaign on social media. On the big screen, Philipps was in the STX romantic comedy, I FEEL PRETTY, opposite Amy Schumer and Michelle Williams. She also appeared in Joel Edgerton's thriller THE GIFT, alongside Jason Bateman and Rebecca Hall. On television, Philipps was seen in HBO's VICE PRINCIPALS, an 18-episode comedy from the creators Danny McBride and Jody Hill. She also starred opposite Courteney Cox on the popular TBS comedy COUGAR TOWN where she played ‘Laurie Keller.' As mentioned in this episode Bashing: Bashing is a form of cathartic release. It's a powerful and pivotal experience in the Process week. This kind of release supports us in acknowledging, expressing, and transforming strong emotions which may have previously been denied. Expressing emotions like anger or disappointment in this way, we release them from the body. We use the body and our voice to express what we no longer want to hold within us. The more deeply we move into expression, the more space we clear. This creates room to experience forgiveness and compassion. Release work also allows us to feel calm and be able to deal with situations in a  manner. It can stop us from taking our ‘stuff' out on others, too! In so doing, we claim our power and freedom. One of our most requested guests, Dave Weigel (Washington Post) is finally able to make an appearance on our show after getting the approval from the higher-ups, and it does not disappoint. Despite writing about politics and all the blocks that come with that, we dig into one of Dave's weirder blocks: Amy Schumer, who blocked him for saying Trainwreck wasn't all that good. The episode is very good though, as we obviously talk politics with Dave, like gerrymandering and the Tea Party and other important political things like the GTA remasters, Letterboxd, Bone Bone, and competitive video gaming. We also have a brief POD Kast crossover as Dave gets excited over John mentioning 311 and John introduces Dave and Stefan to the concept of a "brodel".   If you want to brodel down with us, you can donate to the show at patreon.com/blockedparty, where $5/month gets you access to THREE bonus episodes every month. This past week, we released our third episode of Paranoia, the dystopian RPG, and it's our most unhinged and funny one yet. We're joined by Carlos Maza, Carla Mah, and Racquel Belmonte for what is a crazy time every time out, and this one is no exception. We also just posted the VOD of our live Family Feud episode with Jesse and Mike from YKS and former Jeopardy! champs Seth Wilson and Alex Schmidt, available at any donor level. PLUS! We have ad-free episodes and a Discord and it's all great, so check it out.   Dave Weigel is a politics writer for The Washington Post whose book, "The Show That Never Ends: The Rise and Fall of Prog Rock" is available everywhere you get your books. You can follow him on Twitter at @DaveWeigel.

Jennie True is an absolute gem! I loved this conversation! The great exhale. If you don't mind a little profanity and shocking realism.. this episode is going to be the fresh air you've needed, this year.We cover from  being inclusive to the shocking realities of parenthood and doing “your thing” with littles around.Don't miss this!_________About Jennie:Jenny Pritchett (alias Jenny True) is a nationally recognized columnist for Romper, where she publishes advice on pregnancy and parenting, as well as on her popular blog Jenny True: An Excruciatingly Personal Mommy Blog, which was a finalist for the Mom 2.0 2019 People's Choice Awards. Her new book: You Look Tired: An Excruciatingly Honest Guide to New Parenthood is in the tradition of Ali Wong and Amy Schumer, and is a whip-smart, spit-out-your-coffee funny guide for new parents. Plenty of "new parent" guides cover the basics of breastfeeding, bonding, sleep, and "getting back in shape." But nowhere is there a guide that tells you about the medieval act of pumping, why one shouldn't turn to online pregnancy/parenting forums, and the answer to the question: WTF is this squeeze bottle thing from the hospital?YOU LOOK TIRED is a totally honest, tell-it-like-it-is guide for new moms and parents who don't want any more advice. Writing as Jenny True on her "Excruciatingly Personal Mommy Blog" and in the "Dear Jenny" column on Romper, Jenny has been called the "postpartum feelings doula," as she doles out her unique mix of humor, rage, and encouragement (with a smidge of practical advice), including:• Birth Hurts: Prenatal yoga is a waste of time.• Jabba the Hutt Was Just Postpartum: It explains so much.• and more.ADDITIONAL ADVANCE PRAISE:"In You Look Tired, Jenny Pritchett dishes out hilarious, in-your-face advice to overwhelmed moms and moms-to-be. If you don't have a trust fund, a live-in nanny, or the organizational skills to breastfeed elegantly while getting a pedicure, you need this book. In the voice of her popular alter ego Jenny True, Pritchett tells it like it really is, not the way it would be if you were floating through parenthood on a cloud of maternal fairy dust. It's the first anniversary of this podcast! Turns out, I'm even more in love with romantic TV shows, movies and books one year on. And still feel no shame--mostly--crushing on romance. So in support and love for the genre, let's revisit some of the lushest, most romantic, and rom com funny movie scenes evah. Cue the gushing.https://www.confessionsofaclosetromantic.comMovies/TV ShowsThe scenes featured in this episode are from just a few of my all-time favorite romantic movies & shows:Outlander, especially the first season, is a must for anyone who loves stirring, romantic epics. It's based on the massive series of adventure romance books by Diana Gabaldon. The "official" trailer for Something's Gotta Give says nothing about the sweet, sexy honesty of the age & sex positive romance between Harry Sanborn and Erica Barry, played by Jack Nicholson and Diane Keaton. Any Nancy Meyers rom com is a must see. What more can I say about this classic, groundbreaking rom com? It's in my Romance Hall of Fame, and I've quoted from it throughout much of my life.Ditto for this classic rom com. Another personal Romance Hall of Fame entry. It's no surprise that Nora Ephron and Meg Ryan were involved with both movies.Moonstruck is a romantic comedy, a poetic and sexy look at the whims of love, and a meditation about the importance of family (or found family) in grounding you when you feel lost. Laurence Olivier often chewed the scenery and was quite the ham, but he was never more moving than in this scene from the 1939 movie Wuthering Heights, based on the novel by Emily Brontë.I featured the rom com Book Club in my Love, Sex and Romance--After 40 Edition episode, and I adore its age and sex positivity.I'm going to feature Trainwreck in an upcoming episode because I love the humor, honesty and bravery of Amy Schumer's writing and acting.I featured Destination Wedding in an early episode and its banter and wit put this in my Top 5 Modern Rom Coms.BooksIf you're recovering from romance shame, Dangerous Books for Girls is a fascinating look at the history of the romance genre, why it's so important to women, and why it has been mocked for so long. And most importantly, why you shouldn't feel bad about escaping into its stories.

It's time for another potentially excellent episode of the Greatest Pod in The South starring Neal McCready of RebelGrove.com and Jay G. Tate of AuburnSports.com. Topics covered: • Reviewing Week Three in the world of SEC football, which included a tough win for Alabama and a tough loss for the Auburn Tigers. • Neal and Jay can fix college football's targeting problem. And it's an easy solution. • Norm Macdonald died last week at 61. He was funny. He also got fired for mocking OJ Simpson too much during the '90s, which is interesting in retrospect. • Frances Bean Cobain is DIVORCED — we remember when she was born — and she had to give up a very valuable guitar in the settlement. Sad. • AJ Johnson, whom we ALL know as Ezell from "Friday," died recently. He will be missed. • Ted Lasso cleaned up at the Primetime Emmys ... to Neal's delight. • An English-speaking woman recently was found on a remote Croatian island shoeless, penniless, without ID and she has no idea who she is or how she got there. Man, that's some WEIRD stuff. • Why are people so annoyed by Amy Schumer these days? • Yo, Gabby Pepito's boyfriend killed her, right? And now there's an ALABAMA connection to this strange, sad tale. • Does Raiders Twitter need Cuzzo & The Douche? • Previewing an OK week of SEC football including a tasty matchup between A&M and Arkansas.
