Ascent: Psalms 128-129 - Ascending through the fear of God despite persecution

This week at Christ Street Fellowship, Pastor Nate continued our fall series Ascent: Walking up the Pilgrims' Pathway, by exploring Psalms 128 and 129 and showing how we can ascend through the fear of God, even in times of persecution.Psalm 128 reminds us that true blessing flows from a holy fear of the Lord. The fear of the Lord, although not definable in a single, short definition, is about awe, reverence, honor, obedience, and intimacy with a God who is both powerful and good. We will learn that the fear of God doesn't drive us away, it draws us closer. We also learn that nearness to God is a place of safety, not danger. From Isaiah's trembling vision of the throne room to Jesus' delight in the fear of the Lord, Scripture shows that reverent awe leads to deeper friendship, wisdom, and blessing. Then, turning to Psalm 129, as pilgrims we are reminded that affliction will come, but it will not prevail. “The plowers plowed upon my back,” the psalmist writes, yet the Lord “cut the cords of the wicked.” We see parallels to Paul's words in 2 Corinthians 4 and Peter's encouragement in 1 Peter 5: though we suffer for a season, the God of all grace will restore, strengthen, and establish us.

A new era for complex mitral regurgitation. The ENCIRCLE pivotal trial in The Lancet reports that fully percutaneous, transfemoral, transseptal TMVR (SAPIEN M3) achieved durable MR reduction (≈96% ≤1+ at 1 year), low early mortality, and meaningful improvement in symptoms and quality of life for patients unsuitable for surgery or TEER.   A third pathway for mitral disease is emerging—one built on precision access, valve-in-valve durability planning, and advancing patient selection.   Innovation meeting clinical need.

Send us a textPlease bear in mind this is recording of my practice of a talk I gave in February 2025 to a group of secular artists as a means of connecting with non-believers who operate in the creative arts in the areas of Music, Poetry, and Art. It is an attempt to help them see their creative process as a potential opportunity to approach God. "Art, Music, Poetry: Is It a Pathway to Christian Spirituality?"This presentation explores the concept of mysticism, challenging the misconception that it is irrational or opposed to reason. Instead, I attempt to present spirituality as a gateway to deeper Christian spirituality, particularly as an antidote to the narrow materialistic thinking prevalent in modern society. The episode draws mainly on philosopher Simon Critchley's latest book, On Mysticism, using his insights as a springboard to explore Christian spirituality and mysticism. Critchley, argues that mysticism is about experiencing life in its most intense form. He discusses how figures like Julian of Norwich, Eckhart, and even contemporary artists like Nick Cave have engaged with mysticism. Critchley suggests that deep engagement with art, music, and poetry can serve as secular gateways to religious experience. However, the podcast contrasts this secular approach with the biblical foundation of Christian mysticism, which is rooted in divine revelation.Christian mysticism is not an abandonment of reason but an extension of it—an experiential knowledge of God that transcends intellectual comprehension. Throughout history, Christian mystics, such as St. Teresa of Ávila, St. John of the Cross, and Thomas Aquinas, sought union with God through disciplined spiritual practice. Biblical figures like Moses, Elijah, and Paul also had mystical encounters with God. The episode emphasizes that these experiences are not irrational but deeply transformative, aligning with scriptural teachings.A critical theme discussed is how modern scepticism and distractions hinder mystical experiences. People are so consumed with self-obsession and media distractions these days that they rarely create space for transcendence. In contrast, historical mystics dedicated themselves wholly to prayer, fasting, and contemplation, allowing profound encounters with God.Jesus Himself invited believers into a mystical relationship, stating, "I am the vine; you are the branches" (John 15:5). The episode explores how devotional practices such as prayer, scripture reading, and worship cultivate this relationship, leading to spiritual transformation. The contemporary world often operates under the stories of power and hedonism, leading to nihilism and despair. Christianity, however, offers an alternative narrative centered on love, sacrifice, and redemption. The central work of our lives over the last 15 years or so has been as practicing integral development coaches, and as teachers of this way of guiding and supporting others. In this conversation we explore what it is to be a ‘coach' in this way, to use our humanity, intelligence, hearts and life force to grow wings and then to help other people grow wings of their own. It's such a rewarding, life-giving endeavour, and it teaches us ever more about being a person and taking care of others. Join us for an exploration of what ‘guiding people up and out' might be, with inspiration from a lovely and inspiring poem by Ellie Steel. Our Affections For God Deuteronomy 6:5 5 You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might. Romans 1:20 20 For his invisible attributes, namely, his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world, in the things that have been made. So they are without excuse. John 1:14 14 And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth. Colossians 1:15 15 He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation. John 6:44 44 No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws him. And I will raise him up on the last day. Philippians 2:5-8 5 Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus, 6 who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, 7 but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men. 8 And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross. Deuteronomy 30:6 6 And the LORD your God will circumcise your heart and the heart of your offspring, so that you will love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul, that you may live. Ezekiel 36:26 26 And I will give you a new heart, and a new spirit I will put within you. And I will remove the heart of stone from your flesh and give you a heart of flesh. 1 John 4:15-21 15 Whoever confesses that Jesus is the Son of God, God abides in him, and he in God. 16 So we have come to know and to believe the love that God has for us. God is love, and whoever abides in love abides in God, and God abides in him. 17 By this is love perfected with us, so that we may have confidence for the day of judgment, because as he is so also are we in this world. 18 There is no fear in love, but perfect love casts out fear. For fear has to do with punishment, and whoever fears has not been perfected in love. 19 We love because he first loved us. 20 If anyone says, “I love God,” and hates his brother, he is a liar; for he who does not love his brother whom he has seen cannot love God whom he has not seen. 21 And this commandment we have from him: whoever loves God must also love his brother. 2 Thessalonians 3:5 5 May the Lord direct your hearts to the love of God and to the steadfastness of Christ. Westminster Shorter Catachism Q1) What is the chief end (purpose) of man? A1) To glorify God and enjoy Him forever. Jonathan Edwards True affections for God are produced by the Holy Spirit. Not simply natural emotions but supernatural responses to the revelation of God's glory. True affection for God aims at glorifying God and honoring Him. Cynthia shared her “play to win” philosophy and how that mindset shaped everything from advocacy to joy to building a full, meaningful life for her daughter and family. We also got into self-care, identity, and the evolution that happens over time. Tax Strategy for Entrepreneurs — How to Legally Minimize Taxes & Build Wealth | Carlotta Thompson

Healthy Mind, Healthy Life

In this 30-minute episode of Healthy Mind, Healthy Life, tax expert Carlotta Thompson (founder & CEO of Tax Strategies of America) breaks down practical, legal tax strategies that help entrepreneurs keep more capital and scale faster. Carlotta—an ex-IRS agent turned advocate—explains overlooked credits vs. deductions, when to upgrade from DIY tax software to a professional, and how tax clarity removes the mental drag that limits business growth. If you run a small business or own rental property, this episode gives actionable steps to reduce tax liability, reclaim focus, and use tax-smart moves to build long-term wealth. About the guest: Carlotta Thompson is founder & CEO of Tax Strategies of America and an ex-IRS agent who now helps entrepreneurs and real-estate investors minimize tax legally. She runs trainings and the Pathway to Zero program that teach practical credits, deductions, and structural moves to scale wealth. Key takeaways: Taxes are a common mental block for entrepreneurs; getting tax problems under control frees energy to grow your business. When net business income (after expenses) reaches ~$40,000, invest in a qualified tax professional — TurboTax generally won't capture advanced strategies. Distinguish tax credits (government pays you to do things) from deductions (reduce taxable income); many business activities qualify for credits you're likely missing. Use existing business actions and assets (R&D, accessibility upgrades, equipment repurposed for business) to capture credits — don't buy unnecessary items just for deductions. Keep organized records (spreadsheet or QuickBooks) of all expenses — include previously purchased personal items now used for business (computers, furniture, tools). Ask your accountant “How can I make this a tax deduction?” to promote creative, compliant planning rather than yes/no gatekeeping. Reclassifying or repositioning legitimate costs on returns (when supported by code/publication) can materially lower taxes without extra spending. Consider real estate and buying additional businesses as long-term tax-advantaged growth strategies; structure matters for wealth preservation.   How listeners can connect with Carlotta Thompson  : Search: Carlotta Thompson Finance on TikTok / Instagram / Facebook. We delve into the UAE National Pavilion at the 2025 Venice Biennale, titled "Pressure Cooker" with curator Azza Aboualam. An assistant professor at the College of Arts and Creative Enterprises at Zayed University Dubai and co-founder of Holesum Studio, Aboualam explains how architecture can be a cornerstone for achieving food security, particularly in challenging climates like UAE's and the broader Gulf region. Inspired by a simple question from her mother about the origin of blueberries in the UAE, Aboualam's work explored the intersection of architectural design and food production, focusing on innovative greenhouse typologies. The "Pressure Cooker" exhibition showcases how traditional and high-tech architectural elements can be reconfigured to prolong growing seasons and expand food production within the UAE. We unpack the complexities of food security as a national priority, the economic and environmental costs of imported food, and the surprising prevalence of individual-led greenhouse projects in the UAE. We also touch upon the fascinating historical context of food in the UAE, the impact of population growth on food systems, and a unique architectural cookbook attached to the project, which frames the conversation around food and built environments. 0:00:00 The UAE's Vision For Food Security0:02:40 "Pressure Cooker": Architecture and Food Flow0:03:33 The Blueberry Revelation: Origin of the Idea0:04:38 Why Food Security Is an Architectural Problem in the UAE0:05:48 The Urgency of Food Security In The UAE0:07:08 Global Warming and Food Production Challenges0:08:08 Inside The "Pressure Cooker" UAE Pavilion at the Venice Biennale 20250:10:41 A Call to Action and Moment of Reflection0:11:55 The True Cost of Food0:12:21 Greenhouses: a Common Practice in the UAE0:14:16 The "Kit-of-Parts" Innovation0:14:42 The Adaptable Greenhouse System0:16:07 Food Production in Apartment Living0:16:44 Sparking Broader Conversations0:17:30 Individual vs. Urban Scale Food Production0:19:08 Who Is Doing Food Security Well?0:20:32 Food Infrastructure in the UAE0:21:56 Regional Knowledge Sharing0:23:02 Local Food Production and Sufficiency0:23:53 Oil Revenue's Impact on Food Security0:25:01 Pressure Cooker Recipes: An Architectural Cookbook0:26:44 Engaging With Local Farmers0:28:18 Pathway to Food Independence0:29:03 Defining Food Independence0:30:54 Supermarkets: a Changing Landscape0:32:08 Historical Food Production in the UAE0:33:11 Migration and Food Systems0:35:00 Resources for Learning About Food Security0:36:51 The Problem of Food Waste0:39:17 Packaging Waste in the F&B IndustryUpcoming event

“The concept that sits right at the heart of a sane and meaningful life,” writes Oliver Burkeman “is something like aliveness.” In this conversation we explore what it is to attend to aliveness, how we might come to notice its presence, and consider steps any of us can take to cultivate it. And we talk about how vital this is in an age where we may find ourselves encouraged in many places to become part of an algorithm - to act in life as if we were machines rather than creative beings who are part of a vast and inherently creative universe. This week's conversation is hosted, as always, by Lizzie Winn and Justin Wise of Thirdspace. Episode Overview 00:00 Introduction 03:03 Exploring Aliveness: A Central Theme 05:54 Navigating by Aliveness: Insights and Reflections 09:10 The Distinction Between Aliveness and Happiness 11:59 Embracing the Full Spectrum of Human Experience 14:52 Creatures of Creation: Our Relationship with Life 17:55 Intimacy with Existence: The Heart of Aliveness 20:56 The Cost of Control: Reconnecting with Aliveness 27:13 The Dance of Control and Aliveness 30:01 Curiosity as a Pathway to Freedom 33:04 The Nature of Care and Connection Here's our source for this week: The Path of Aliveness The concept that sits right at the heart of a sane and meaningful life, I'm increasingly convinced, is something like aliveness. It goes by other names, too, none of which quite nail it – but it's the one thing that, so long as you navigate by it, you'll never go too far wrong. Sometimes it feels like a subtle electrical charge behind what's happening, or a mildly heightened sense of clarity, or sometimes like nothing I can put into words at all. I freely concede it's a hopelessly unscientific idea. But I'm pretty sure it's what Joseph Campbell meant when he said that most of us aren't really seeking the meaning of life, but rather “an experience of being alive… so that we actually feel the rapture” – although personally I don't think it's always rapturous, per se – “of being alive.”In literal terms, of course, “aliveness” can't be the right word here, because technically everyone's alive all the time, whereas aliveness comes and goes. Still, I know it when I feel it. And I definitely know it when my misguided efforts to exert too much control over reality cause it to drain away.  And so an excellent question to ask yourself – when you're facing a tough decision, say, or wondering if you're on the right track – is: “Does this feel like it's taking me in the direction of greater aliveness?”Crucially, aliveness isn't the same as happiness. As the Zen teacher Christian Dillo explains in his engrossing book The Path of Aliveness, you can absolutely feel alive in the midst of intense sadness. Aliveness, he writes, “isn't about feeling *better*; it's about *feeling*better.” When I feel aliveness in my work, it's not because every task is an unadulterated pleasure; and when I feel it in my close relationships, it's not because I've transcended the capacity to get annoyed by other people – because believe me, I haven't. But to whatever extent I *do* manage what Dillo refers to as fully inhabiting my experience, life is good, in a deep sense, and more vibrant, and I feel more connected to others – and overall, happiness tends to predominate…   I think it might be the key to understanding how to think and feel about AI, how to respond to it, how to integrate it into our lives or not – and how to ensure, as technology marches on, that we don't lose sight of what really matters for a meaningfully productive life.  Most obviously, aliveness is what generally feels absent from the written and visual outputs of ChatGPT and its ilk, even when they're otherwise of high quality… It makes you wonder if Wendell Berry had it right when he wrote: “It is easy for me to imagine that the next great division of the world will be between people who wish to live as creatures and people who wish to live as machines.”…  I think it's good to stay fully, even slightly foolishly, committed to the idea that humans doing human things, with other humans, is and will remain at the vital heart of human existence. The Bulletproof Dental Podcast Episode 411 HOSTS: Dr. Peter Boulden DESCRIPTION In this episode of the Bulletproof Dental Practice Podcast, Dr. Peter Boulden explores the parallels between the Entrepreneurial Operating System (EOS) and the Bulletproof Pathway, emphasizing the importance of structure, vision, data, and processes in dental practices. He discusses how dentists often operate in chaos and the need for clarity and systems to achieve fulfillment and success. The conversation highlights the significance of leadership, addressing issues, and creating a culture of accountability within dental teams. TAKEAWAYS Entrepreneurs need more structure, not more ideas. Vision is crucial for clarity in practice. People are the biggest investment in a practice. Data helps measure practice performance effectively. Addressing issues head-on leads to better outcomes. Processes should standardize patient experiences. Traction is about fulfillment and rhythm in practice. Leadership meetings are essential for problem-solving. Creating a culture of accountability enhances team performance. Optimizing practice life involves preserving time, emotion, and money.
