A garden is being developed on the slopes of Te Mata Peak to enable more people easy access to rongoā Māori - traditional Māori healing with the help of plants. Tyne Nelson is among those leading the project and took Country Life for a stroll.
She starts by introducing her extensive and interesting background and what Pathway is working on. She then goes on to talk about the impact of IoT in the supply chain and handling costs for companies looking to adopt it. Ryan and Zuzanna wrap up the podcast with a high-level discussion about the evolution of challenges and advice for choosing the right technology for your business. Zuzanna is the CEO of Pathway, a game-changing Dev Tool for enterprise clients, enabling real-time machine learning on live event streams. Pathway develops a Database that Thinks™, which provides a unified source of truth from raw data in logistics and other industries. Zuzanna is the author of the state-of-the-art model for forecasting maritime trade published by the American Academy of Sciences (single-author, pre-PhD). While working on this project, she saw the mismatch between the business needs, the reality of the data in logistics, and the current ML and AI methods - this was the spark to launch Pathway. During her career, she was responsible for sales of SaaS technology underlying Spoj.com. She holds a Master's degree in Economics and Public Policy from Sciences Po, Ecole Polytechnique, and ENSAE, as well as a Ph.D. in Complexity Science. Pathway develops a Database that Thinks. A game-changing Dev Tool for enterprise clients, enabling real-time machine learning on live event streams. Pathway provides a unified source of truth from raw data in logistics and other industries. Their product provides application developers with a capacity for real-time incremental in-memory transformation of complex event streams. Pathway is a female-led, deeptech developer tool company. It was started by top people in data processing and AI. Pathway's CTO, Jan Chorowski, previously worked at Google Brain, and most of the team members are top-competitive programmers. Their mission is to significantly impact the physical economy by bringing automation, scalability, and repeatability to industries that are having a hard time capitalizing on the advances in AI.
My very special guest today is Anthony, Tomey. Anthony is a full-time entrepreneur, a former professional baseball player with the Detroit Tigers organization and now truly one of the largest franchise owners of Jimmy John's, The Chicken Guy and also a Real Estate Developer. Additionally, he is the owner of 8 Mile Vodka - a Vodka that took home the awards for Best in Class: Vodka and Best of Class: Overall Vodka at the 2022 San Francisco World Spirits Competition. I sat down with Anthony to talk about how he transitioned from pitching on the baseball diamond to pitching in the boardroom and hitting home runs every time! Anthony shares how he gets the inspiration to “win at all costs” from his dad. His dad came to the United States, Ellis Island, at 25 years old and with $20.00 in his pocket. Though he didn't speak English, he managed to put himself through college and earned a master's degree, all while working as a busboy at the London Chophouse in Detroit. Anthony's goal from a young age was to earn a full ride scholarship to thank his father who had paid for a private Catholic school education. As a baseball player, Anthony loved the pressure of the game. He was a closer, a last inning pitcher, and thrived in the bases loaded, no one out scenarios. It was the thrill of the competition that motivated him. He also talks about how humbling it was to go from being the #1 pitcher in college to the majors where everyone was on a level playing field with every guy being the #1 player where they came from. Baseball taught him that no matter what happens, you're going to fail. You have to pick yourself up and get back out there. In the spring of 2003, Anthony Tomey was playing baseball at Eastern Michigan University in Ypsilanti, Michigan. His family came to see him play, and after the game they headed to a sub shop down the street. The place had a line of 20 people stretching outside of the door. At first the family took this as a bad sign, but a member of staff told them to stick around. In less than five minutes, their food was in their hands. This was a defining moment, as they all were amazed at the speed and efficiency with which this business operated. Just a few months later, five like-minded Tomey family members, Fawzi, Tony, Anthony, Christine, and Michael, opened a Jimmy John's of their own in Novi, Michigan. In 2003, the Tomey Group LLC was founded as a means to grow a brand the partners loved, and to bring the same expansion to brands throughout the country. As of May 2019, the Tomey Group has bought and opened more than 50 Jimmy John's locations throughout the Detroit Metro area. Anthony is not your average franchise owner. Sitting back and delegating tasks from afar isn't his style. Instead, he is hands-on involved in all aspects of the business, from preparing sandwiches to making deliveries. He is committed to providing employees with what they need and deserve, no matter what that looks like. He knows his employees' names, how they work, and what makes them tick. Just over a year ago, Anthony and his brother had an opportunity to buy a vodka company. 8 Mile Vodka, and an apparel company, Born in Detroit became their next financial endeavor. They currently oversee operations and have had great success, partnering with the Detroit Pistons with both companies, while getting into every Meijer in Michigan with 8 Mile. Additionally, 8 Mile Vodka just recently took home the awards for Best in Class: Vodka and Best of Class: Overall Vodka at the 2022 San Francisco World Spirits Competition. Recently Tomey Group signed a deal to become the newest franchisees of Chicken Guy, a new concept by Guy Fieri. It competes directly with Chick Fil A, and the Tomey Group bought the rights to southeast Michigan. Anthony truly believes that the harder you work, the luckier you get. The opportunities that continue to present themselves to the Tomey group are a direct result of hard work and surrounding themselves with successful people. Success attracts success. The Tomey group continues to grow their empire and have added Real Estate to their growing portfolio. With the recent purchase of a shopping plaza in White Lake MI 3 years ago, 4 apartment complexes throughout SE Detroit and a resort on Houghton Lake, there is no stopping this hard-working entrepreneur! Early childhood educator and entrepreneur Brook LaFloe describes an Indigenous cultural resource called the medicine wheel that helped her to conceptualize the interconnectedness of the different peoples of the world as a child. There is a lack of racial and cultural diversity in children's book characters as well as authors. EmbraceRace crowdsourced a list of recommended children's books, featuring “kids of color being themselves.”

One of the main goals of education is to prepare our kids for the future, and that often means preparing them for a career. A great way to do that is through internships, capstones, and mentoring programs. Erika Reeves is the Bodies Early College Experience Coordinator at Metro Early College High School, who we've spoken with on the podcast before. She's joined by a student, Shirish Parasa, who has been participating in the Bodies program this past year and gave an incredible capstone presentation. Mark Reeves Forgiveness doesn't always come easily or all at once. Many times it's a process. And the deeper the pain the longer the process can take. However, the process is where we'll find the Lord at work if we seek Him earnestly with humility and expectancy. This is where our prayer life comes into play. Those who regularly practice substantial, disciplined prayer will find the process of forgiveness greatly effective in the development of Christ-like character. One thing is certain: it is impossible for a person to follow Christ and experience forgiveness from sin if they are unwilling to forgive others for pain inflicted.

Disconnection can be rough, especially in relationships with years of history. For a lot of people it seems easier to sweep all the messiness under a rug. Eventually, however, the rug isn't big enough to hide the things we would rather ignore. When it comes time to get honest with ourselves, and the ones we love, it can feel impossible to clean up years of denying the reality of our circumstances. But, what if there is a foundation to rebuild a relationship better than before? In part two of this two part episode, Jonny and Pietze share about their attachment styles and how their lack of understanding of each other built barriers throughout the years. They expose some of their deepest fears that led to a chasm of disconnection. Jonny talks about his new found capacity to be a rock in the relationship, and together they describe how the humility of taking ownership was the bedrock for restoring connection better than ever before. If you've had a long term relationship, or friendship, this conversation will ignite hope, care, love, and understanding for areas in you connection that you didn't know you needed. — Grief continues to give me opportunities to learn and grow. It teaches me to live with a heart full of gratitude and to learn to love others and myself more. It allows me to live my purpose, which is to help you on your journey. Do you realize that you change every day of your life? Each thought, experience, choice, and response creates change in you. In other words, you will either evolve or devolve in your daily existence. You have the opportunity to change for your good. How? By making conscious choices to enhance your body, mind, and soul. Realize you are always in a state of “becoming what you think.” So what are you thinking? Even in the midst of difficult times and grief, there is always something beautiful to be found. – Says Robin Valeria interviews Robin Chodak — the author of “Ten Grief Lessons from Golf.” Robin left her job after 20 years as a computer software systems analyst following the suicide of her husband Steve in 2005. In the midst of grief, she started a spiritual journey of self-discovery, which ultimately led to her transformation. After the suicide she started to write. At first it was personal letters to Steve. It helped her stay connected and at the same time it was therapeutic. She also began to write stories about grief, which are published in various grief and suicide journals. In 2017 she published, "Be Gentle with Me, I'm Grieving" which won a book excellence award and also published "Moving to Excellence, A Pathway to Transformation After Grief." Grief continued to enter Robin's life. On September 28, 2019 she lost her beloved husband Dr. Gerald Chodak unexpectedly in their home. It was another sudden death, which caused grief trauma. It led her to publish a 3rd book that she had written 3 years prior regarding inner peace entitled, "3 Must Have Connections for Inner Peace." In 2021 Robin launched her new online program that teaches and certifies you to become a Grief Coach. Robin's expertise is in coaching clients, speaking, writing books and teaching through online grief courses. Robin is a trained facilitator for AFSP (American Foundation for Suicide Prevention), The founder of Facebook Suicide Recovery, owner of Robin Chodak Coaching and Grief Healing LLC, Certified Grief, Life, Spiritual Coach, Certified Mindfulness Meditation Teacher, International Speaker, Certified Reiki Practitioner, Certified Master NLP Practitioner, Author of 4 books and Creator of Online courses available on Udemy.com. To learn more about Robin Chodak and her work, please visit: robinchodak.com — This podcast is a quest for well-being, a quest for a meaningful life through the exploration of fundamental truths, enlightening ideas, insights on physical, mental, and spiritual health. The inspiration is Love. The aspiration is to awaken new ways of thinking that can lead us to a new way of being, being well.

And 4/4 Less than high school education Just a word about genetics. We now know that even if you carry genes for dementia, you can modify your genetics…there is hope! This new concept is called epigenetics, and it shows that the factors we employ above can put certain dementia genes “to sleep” and activate other genes that are going to make you healthier! We are no longer a puppet of our genes! Genetic Risk for late-onset Alzheimer's disease (LOAD), the most prevalent dementia, is partially driven by genetics. To identify LOAD risk loci, we performed a large genome-wide association meta-analysis of clinically diagnosed LOAD (94,437 individuals). We confirm 20 previous LOAD risk loci and identify five new genome-wide loci (IQCK, ACE, ADAM10, ADAMTS1, and WWOX), two of which (ADAM10, ACE) were identified in a recent genome-wide association (GWAS)-by-familial-proxy of Alzheimer's or dementia. Fine-mapping of the human leukocyte antigen (HLA) region confirms the neurological and immune-mediated disease haplotype HLA-DR15 as a risk factor for LOAD. Pathway analysis implicates immunity, lipid metabolism, tau binding proteins, and amyloid precursor protein (APP) metabolism, showing that genetic variants affecting APP and Aβ processing are associated not only with early-onset autosomal dominant Alzheimer's disease but also with LOAD. Analyses of risk genes and pathways show enrichment for rare variants (P = 1.32 × 10−7), indicating that additional rare variants remain to be identified. We also identify important genetic correlations between LOAD and traits such as family history of dementia and education. If you're a doc you probably understood this abstract from a recent article ..if not.. disregard.
Too many people are experiencing suicidal crisis or mental health-related distress without the support and care they need. The pandemic has made a that situation worse. On July 16, 2022, the former 800-number for the Suicide Prevention Lifeline is changing to the much-easier-to-remember 9-8-8, a variation of the 9-1-1 emergency line. The 988 Lifeline is a national network of over 200 local, independent crisis centers equipped to help people in mental health-related distress or experiencing a suicidal crisis via call, chat, or text. The 988 Lifeline provides free and confidential support to people in suicidal crisis or mental health-related distress 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, across the U.S. It's being touted as a step toward transforming mental health care in the U.S., though that is a huge project that will take much more time and resources. In this episode we revisit an interview with the Lifeline's director, Dr. John Draper, who talks about how reaching out to a lifeline can help.

One of the most common messages a man can inadvertently take from their father is the belief that we're only valuable when we perform well. Through even the best intentions this lopsided message can leave a child confused about love even into adulthood. Confronting our pain with a father can feel crippling and paralyzing. But what if the mere acknowledgement of a problem could catapult a willing person into the freedom they always hoped for? In this episode Justin and Abi are joined by Life Consulting Master Class student Dave. Dave opens up about the trials and tribulations he's faced walking away from the family business and the explosion of emotions that have followed. He shares about the expectations he couldn't live up to and the eye opening season that left him facing emotions he never knew he had. Dave bravely drops his guard and allows the Stumvolls to join him in a healing journey, reframing the way he sees himself and his father forever. Confrontation with people we deeply care about can feel high stakes to say the least. In our anxiety it's easy to unintentionally communicate in ways that suck the sense of love right out the room. But what if the love we have for others can be felt and leave a lasting impact in the midst of incredibly honest conversations? In part two of this mini series Abi and Pietze continue the conversation with Pietze's parents, Doug and Janice. Together they talk about the powerful affects of creating an atmosphere of love free from blame and accusation. They share how acknowledging their triggers, and taking ownership for their own emotions turned the tide in how they relate. Through vulnerability they paint a picture of how they love one another and what their relationship looks like moving forward. If you're wanting hope for deeper connections and strength to live a lifestyle of honesty, this episode will leave you inspired to take brave leaps like never before!
