Around 2016, buoyed by so-called data kranti ("data revolution"), an aspirational neo-middle class of users in India accessed internet for the first time on their mobile phones. Unlimited: Aspirational Politics and Mobile Media Distribution (MIT Press, 2026) tells the story of digital infrastructures that are being created by state-corporations for content and money to move and reach such users. It interrogates how their design impact the forms of inclusions and exclusions enacted as well as the horizon of social behaviors and expectations in "Digital India." The book contends that to understand the possibilities and limits of India's aspirational politics, media studies scholars should attend to infrastructures of aspiration: the distributional logistics of streaming content and mobile money are the infrastructural backbone that recalibrate thresholds of aspirational goals. Digital content media distribution is also shaped by how user practices get entangled with particular affordances of platforms, and hence the need to study both participatory cultures of circulation and logistics of distribution together. Drawing on in-depth interviews, ethnographic fieldwork, critical discourse analysis and participant observation, the book traces the supply chains of content delivery networks enabling streaming video-on-demand services and informal ways of circulating "vernacular" music videos through memory cards. Unlimited does not restrict itself to formal media infrastructures, but also researches online phishing and lending scam assemblages to understand how such scams perform critical boundary work to reveal the cracks in and workings of financial distribution networks. This book offers a systematic examination of distribution considerations—including localization strategies—required for imagining mobile phone users across the varied regional geographies of "Digital India." Rahul Mukherjee is Associate Professor of TV & New Media and graduate chair in the Department of Cinema & Media Studies at University of Pennsylvania. His teaching and research focus on the logistical and environmental dimensions of digital infrastructures and platforms. Around 2016, buoyed by so-called data kranti ("data revolution"), an aspirational neo-middle class of users in India accessed internet for the first time on their mobile phones. Unlimited: Aspirational Politics and Mobile Media Distribution (MIT Press, 2026) tells the story of digital infrastructures that are being created by state-corporations for content and money to move and reach such users. It interrogates how their design impact the forms of inclusions and exclusions enacted as well as the horizon of social behaviors and expectations in "Digital India." The book contends that to understand the possibilities and limits of India's aspirational politics, media studies scholars should attend to infrastructures of aspiration: the distributional logistics of streaming content and mobile money are the infrastructural backbone that recalibrate thresholds of aspirational goals. Digital content media distribution is also shaped by how user practices get entangled with particular affordances of platforms, and hence the need to study both participatory cultures of circulation and logistics of distribution together. Drawing on in-depth interviews, ethnographic fieldwork, critical discourse analysis and participant observation, the book traces the supply chains of content delivery networks enabling streaming video-on-demand services and informal ways of circulating "vernacular" music videos through memory cards. Unlimited does not restrict itself to formal media infrastructures, but also researches online phishing and lending scam assemblages to understand how such scams perform critical boundary work to reveal the cracks in and workings of financial distribution networks. In this episode of Journal Club, Daphna reviews a randomized controlled trial from the European Journal of Pediatrics investigating the physiologic effects of intranasal expressed breast milk (EBM) administration in preterm infants. The study found that infants receiving 0.2 mL of fresh breast milk intranasally three times daily showed significantly higher cerebral oxygenation levels, along with more favorable trends in heart rate and respiratory rate, compared to controls. While time to full oral feeding and length of hospital stay were unchanged, the safety data is reassuring. Le forum a changé de main et de ton. Aujourd'hui l'idéologie incel transforme la frustration en conviction, la conviction en ressentiment, le ressentiment en désignation d'un ennemi. La vraie crise, c'est l'amitié masculine Niobe Way a suivi des cohortes de garçons pendant huit ans. Ce qu'elle observe est systématique : à 11-12 ans, les garçons ont des amitiés émotionnellement profondes. En grandissant, ils apprennent que ça "fait fille" ou "gay". Rather than waiting for NEC to appear, her team has been systematically scanning babies born under 32 weeks every week from one week of age until eight weeks or discharge, building what may be the first normative dataset for bowel wall thickness in this population. Early findings are already challenging the standard radiological definitions, showing that extremely preterm babies have thinner bowel walls than current benchmarks would classify as normal — raising the question of whether definitions derived from term or older patients have ever been appropriate for our tiniest babies. In Women in Hollywood's Dream Factory: Tales of Inequality, Abuse, and Resistance (U Illinois Press, 2026) Karen McNally edits a collection focused on examining and revising film history in the aftermath of the women's stories, past and present, that have come to light.The collection begins with essays on the interplay between reality and imagination in narratives and representations of women's experiences of unequal treatment. In Part 2, contributors discuss how the gendered attitudes of the media's stories enable inequality in Hollywood and look at the forces that arise whenever women resist these media assaults. The next section addresses the structures that built the inequalities and mistreatment while Part 4 revisits established narratives to challenge, renew, and expand upon our understanding of film history through women's stories. Essays in the final section address the combination of inequality and resistance that defines women's experiences in Hollywood. In Women in Hollywood's Dream Factory: Tales of Inequality, Abuse, and Resistance (U Illinois Press, 2026) Karen McNally edits a collection focused on examining and revising film history in the aftermath of the women's stories, past and present, that have come to light.The collection begins with essays on the interplay between reality and imagination in narratives and representations of women's experiences of unequal treatment. In Part 2, contributors discuss how the gendered attitudes of the media's stories enable inequality in Hollywood and look at the forces that arise whenever women resist these media assaults. The next section addresses the structures that built the inequalities and mistreatment while Part 4 revisits established narratives to challenge, renew, and expand upon our understanding of film history through women's stories. Essays in the final section address the combination of inequality and resistance that defines women's experiences in Hollywood. By bringing together academics and journalists that utilise gender and media studies, as well as history and international relations, this interdisciplinary panel will speak to the relationship between the family and nation-building, the role of media and advertising in representing the mother figure, and through real life stories explore how people in the Middle East and the diaspora have redefined what family looks like. Meet our speakers Dr Polly Withers is a feminist cultural studies researcher, currently leading the Leverhulme Early Career Project ‘Neoliberal Visions: Gendering Consumer Advertising and its Resistances in the Levant', which considers how commercial advertising mediates shifts in gender and sexuality in post-Oslo Palestine and current-day Jordan. Prior to this, Polly's work focused on the gender and sexuality politics of 'alternative' music and subcultural participation in contemporary Palestine and its diaspora. Her work has appeared in Feminist Media Studies, the British Journal of Middle East Studies, and related gender and cultural studies outlets. She is currently working on a single-author monograph based on her Leverhulme research. Dr Andrew Delatolla is Associate Professor in Middle Eastern Studies at the University of Leeds. His research interests centre on the intersections of race and sexuality in relation to statehood and state formation. He has recently concluded a funded project examining the politics of LGBTIQ+ rights in the Spanish overseas territories of Ceuta and Melilla and is currently part of an AHRC-DFG funded project examining transformations in gender and sexual governance in post-Soviet Muslim majority republics. His recent publications include a co-authored chapter, with Karim Chedid, in the anthology This Queer Arab Family edited by Elias Jahshan and a co-authored article with Hossein Cheaito in the European Journal of Politics and Gender on LGBTIQ+ activism in Lebanon. Elias Jahshan (he/him) is a Lebanese-Palestinian journalist and writer, and the editor of groundbreaking anthologies THIS ARAB IS QUEER (2022) and THIS QUEER ARAB FAMILY (2025), both published by Saqi Books. This Arab Is Queer was a 2023 Lambda Literary Awards finalist in the USA and shortlisted for the 2023 Bread & Roses Award in the UK, and has been translated into Italian and soon in French. His short memoirs have been published in several anthologies, and he has written for The Guardian, The New Arab, Raseef22, My Kali, and more. Meet our chair Hakan Sandal-Wilson is Assistant Professor of Gender, Peace and Security at the Department of Gender Studies. He is a political sociologist whose teaching and research explore how gender and sexuality intersect with democracy, conflict, and ethnic and religious difference.

A study published in Nature Communications, published Feb 19, 2026, found that “pregnancy physically alters a woman's brain, with a second pregnancy bringing even more profound effects.” The researchers “performed brain scans on 110 women. Some were first-time mothers, others second-time moms, and some nulliparous women. Results showed that during a first pregnancy, the greatest changes occur in the structure and activity of the ‘default mode network' – the brain system responsible for self-reflection and mind wandering. When neuroscientists scanned the brains of people going along with a group, they expected to find lying. What they found instead was something far stranger. The group wasn't changing people's answers. It was changing what they actually saw. We'll get to that study in a minute. But first, I want you to remember the last time you were in a meeting, and you knew something was wrong. The numbers didn't add up. The risk was being underestimated. And someone needed to say it. Then the most senior person in the room spoke first: "I think this is exactly what we need." Heads nodded. Finance agreed. Marketing agreed. The consultant agreed. And by the time it was your turn, you heard yourself saying, "I have some minor concerns, but overall I think it's solid." You're not alone. Research shows that roughly half of employees stay silent at work rather than voice a concern. And among those who stayed quiet, 40% estimated they wasted 2 weeks or more replaying what they didn't say. Two weeks. Mentally rehearsing the point they should have made in a meeting that's already over. That silence isn't a character flaw. It's your neurology working against you. And today I'm going to show you exactly why it happens and how to stop it. It starts with what was happening inside your head during that meeting you just remembered. Why Your Brain Surrenders to the Group Most people know about the Asch conformity experiments from the 1950s. People were asked to match line lengths, and seventy-five percent went along with answers that were obviously wrong. That result gets cited everywhere. But the more important study came fifty years later, and it revealed something the Asch experiment never could. In 2005, neuroscientist Gregory Berns at Emory University put people inside an MRI machine and ran a similar conformity task, this time with three-dimensional shape rotation. Like Asch, he planted actors who gave wrong answers. But unlike Asch, he could watch what was happening inside people's brains while the conformity was occurring. Berns expected the MRI to show activity in the prefrontal cortex, the brain's decision-making center, when people went along with wrong answers. That would mean they were knowingly lying to fit in. Just a social calculation. That's not what the scans showed. People who conformed showed no increased activity in decision-making regions. Instead, the activity showed up in the parts of the brain that handle visual and spatial perception, the occipital and parietal areas. The group wasn't changing people's answers. It was changing what they actually saw. Their brains were rewriting their experience to match the room. And the people who resisted the group? Their scans told a different story. Heightened activity in the amygdala, the brain's threat detection center. The same circuitry that fires when you encounter physical danger lit up when someone disagreed with the group. Berns put it plainly. The fear of social isolation activates the same neural machinery as the fear of genuine threats to survival. When you caved in that meeting, your neurology wasn't malfunctioning. It was doing exactly what it was designed to do. Keep you safe inside the tribe. This is why what I call mindjacking works so well. Algorithms manufacture social proof by showing you what's trending, what your friends liked, and what similar people chose. Your wiring responds the same way it does at the conference table. You're fighting your own threat-detection system every time you try to hold an independent position within a group. You can't turn off the wiring. But you can learn to catch it in the act. And that starts with one critical distinction. The First Skill: Separating Updating from Caving Sometimes the people around you know something you don't. Changing your mind in a group isn't always a surrender. Sometimes it's the smartest move in the room. The real skill is knowing which one just happened. You can test this in real time. When you feel your position shifting in a group, ask yourself three questions. First: Did someone introduce information I didn't have before? If the CFO reveals a data point that genuinely changes the calculus, updating your view isn't a weakness. It's intelligence. That's new evidence. Second: Can I articulate why I changed my mind, in specific terms? If you can say, "I shifted because of the margin data in Q3 that I hadn't seen," that's a real update. If you can only say, "I don't know, everyone seemed to think it was fine," that's capitulation. Third: Would I have reached this same conclusion alone, with the same information? This is the killer question. If the answer is no, and you only arrived at this position because others were already there, you haven't updated. You've surrendered. Getting this wrong is costly. And not just the one time. When you capitulate and call it updating, you train yourself to stop trusting your own analysis. Do it enough times, and you won't even bother preparing, because you already know you're going to defer. That's how capable people slowly become passengers in rooms where they should be driving. Capture those three questions somewhere you'll see them. They're your real-time check on whether you're being open-minded or spineless. Those questions work when you're already in the meeting and the pressure is live. But what if you could protect your thinking before the pressure even starts? The Pre-Meeting Lock-In The most important thing you can do to protect your independent thinking doesn't happen during the meeting. It happens before. I call it the Pre-Meeting Lock-In, and it takes less than two minutes. Before any meeting where a decision will be made, write down three things: Your position Two or three key reasons supporting it What would it take to change your mind Put it on paper. Put it in a note on your phone. Just get it out of your head and into a form you can reference. Why does this work? Because once the discussion starts, your mind is going to quietly edit your memories of what you believed. You'll start thinking, "Well, I wasn't really sure about that point anyway." Your pre-meeting notes are an anchor against that self-deception. They're a record of what you actually thought before the social pressure arrived. You want to see what happens when someone has the analysis but doesn't lock it in? The night before the Challenger launch in January 1986, engineer Roger Boisjoly and his team at Morton Thiokol had the data. They knew the O-ring seals were dangerous in cold weather. They'd written memos. They'd run the numbers. They recommended against launching. But when NASA pushed back hard on the teleconference, Thiokol management called an off-line caucus and excluded the engineers from the room. When the call resumed, management reversed the recommendation. Boisjoly had the analysis. His managers had heard it. But under pressure from their biggest customer, the conclusion got edited in real time. Boisjoly later described it as an unethical forum driven by what he called "intense customer intimidation." He fought like hell, but the room won. That's the most extreme version of the problem. Life and death. But the mechanics are the same in every conference room. The analysis exists. The pressure arrives. And without something anchoring you to what you actually concluded, the room rewrites the story. There's a bonus effect to the Lock-In, too. When you've documented what it would take to change your mind, you've given yourself permission to be genuinely open. You're not being stubborn for the sake of it. You're saying, "Show me evidence that meets this threshold, and I'll update." That's intellectual honesty with a backbone. But you can know exactly what you think and still fail if you can't get anyone else to hear it. How to Dissent and Actually Be Heard Most dissent fails not because it's wrong, but because it's delivered badly. Blurting out "I think this is a mistake" when the group is already aligned feels like an attack. People get defensive. Your point gets ignored, not because it lacked merit, but because your delivery threatened the group's cohesion. You triggered the same threat response in them that you've been learning to manage in yourself. Charlan Nemeth, a psychologist at UC Berkeley, has studied dissent for decades. You'd expect her research to show that dissent helps groups when the dissenter is right. When someone spots a flaw that everyone else missed. That makes intuitive sense. But that's not what she found. Nemeth discovered that when someone voices a genuine minority opinion, the entire group thinks more carefully. They consider more information, examine more alternatives, and reach better conclusions. And the group benefits even when the dissenter turns out to be wrong. Even when you're wrong, the act of dissenting makes the group smarter. Your disagreement forces everyone out of autopilot. Decades of research by Moscovici supports this. Minority voices don't just influence people in the moment. They shift perception afterward, in private, long after the meeting ends. That's the good news. The catch is in how the dissent happens. Nemeth tested what happens when dissent is assigned rather than authentic, when someone plays devil's advocate because they were told to. It doesn't produce the same effect. Groups can tell when disagreement is performative. The cognitive benefits only show up when the dissent is authentic. When someone actually believes what they're saying. That means the goal isn't just to voice disagreement. It's to voice it in a way that people can actually receive. And the hardest version of this isn't when you have a minor concern about an otherwise good plan. It's when the whole direction is wrong, and finding something to praise would be dishonest. In those moments, the move is to separate the people from the position. "I respect the work that went into this, and I know this isn't what anyone wants to hear, but I think we're solving the wrong problem." You're honoring the effort while challenging the direction. You're not attacking the tribe. You're trying to save it from a bad bet. When the stakes are lower, and you do see genuine merit, you can lead with that. "The market timing argument is strong, and I want to make sure we've stress-tested one thing before we commit." Same principle. You're working with their wiring instead of against it. Either way, your dissent has value beyond being right. Remember that. It's worth holding onto when your amygdala is screaming at you to stay quiet. Everything so far has assumed you're in a room with other people. Your amygdala can't tell the difference between a conference table and a phone screen. The Rooms You Can't See You're not just in meetings. You're in invisible rooms all day long. And most of the time, you don't even know you've walked into one. Every time you scroll past a post with ten thousand likes and think, "I guess that's the right take." Every time you read three articles with the same conclusion and stop questioning it. Every time an algorithm shows you what similar people chose, and you choose it too. Those are rooms full of nodding heads. And your amygdala responds to them the same way it responds to the conference table. Think about the last time you researched a major purchase. You probably started with some idea of what you wanted. Then you read reviews. Then you checked what was trending. Then you asked friends. By the time you decided, how much of that decision was yours? How much of it was the room? Or think about how you form opinions on topics you haven't studied deeply. You read a few articles. They mostly agree. You adopt the consensus. That feels like research. But Berns' scans tell us what's actually happening. Your brain isn't independently weighing the evidence. It's detecting a consensus and rewriting your perception to match. The same process that happens at the conference table is happening every time you open your phone. Mindjacking doesn't need to override your thinking. It just needs to make sure you never finish thinking for yourself before the crowd's answer arrives. And once it arrives, your neurology does the rest. The group doesn't just influence your answer; it shapes it. It rewrites your perception. The Lock-In works for these invisible rooms, too. Before you research a major purchase, write down what you actually want and what you're willing to pay. Before you dive into reviews and opinions, commit your criteria to paper. Before you ask friends what they think about a decision you've already analyzed, record your conclusion. Give yourself the same protection from algorithmic conformity that you'd want before walking into a boardroom. The skill isn't being contrarian. It's being first. First, to your own conclusion, before the room, any room, gets a vote. This is your challenge for the week. Think of one meeting you have coming up where a decision will be made. Before you walk in, open your notes app and type three lines. Line one: what you think. Line two: why. Line three: what would change your mind. That's it. Then sit in that meeting and watch what happens to your thinking when the room pushes back. I think you'll surprise yourself. What if the person you can't resist isn't your boss, your colleagues, or the algorithm? What if it's you? What happens when the decision you need to make threatens something deeper, when being wrong would mean something unbearable about who you are? That's where we're headed next. Keto Claim: Carbohydrates raise insulin leading to fat storage – keto lowers insulin and burns body fat better Debunking: Ketosis is a metabolic state and not a health outcome. For example ketones can be elevated by very long fasting, starvation, different illnesses and uncontrolled diabetes. Keto Claim: By minimizing carbs keto stabilizes blood sugar, reduce insulin spikes, and improve insulin sensitivity that benefits those with type 2 diabetes Debunked: This claim contradicts the evidence of induced hepatic insulin resistance and glucose intolerance in longer-term studies. In animal models, keto diets impair blood sugar regulation within several days, which shows harm for metabolic health. Keto Claim: Ketones are seen as “clean” fuel that advocates claim are anti inflammatory and neuroprotective. Believe that this along with ketosis lowers triglycerides, raises HDL cholesterol, and improves lipid profiles. They argue that the increase in LDL cholesterol is benign. Claim saturated fats are harmless if carbs are low Debunked: This claim is undermined by the increased LDL cholesterol, triglycerides, and cardiovascular risks from saturated fats in animal products. Meta-analyses show no long-term lipid improvements from keto diets. Rather this is the risk in elevated low-density lipoprotein and very-low-density lipoproteins that increase cardiovascular disease Also, insulin reduction does not override the quality of fat. LDL cholesterol and ApoB, as well as atherosclerosis, increase significantly on an animal based diet. Saturated fat still remains a causal factor for cardiovascular disease. Keto Claim: High protein and fat increases satiety and therefore reduces hunger Debunking: Weight loss is primarily from reduced intake due to satiety, not fat-burning efficiency. Long-term keto adherence often leads to weight regain with no significant sustained benefits for visceral fat or appetite control. hort term weight loss is not same as long term benefits. A study shows that weight loss at 3-6 months on a keto diet disappears by 12 months Keto Claim: It enhances brain function and energy that then improves mental clarity and mood. Argue that animal products like eggs and organ meats provides choline and other nutrients for brain health. Debunked: There is no strong evidence for this claim. In fact keto's nutrient deficiencies and lack of fiber in the long term can lead to fatigue, constipation and in women neural tubal defects. Keto's claims are only based on short term trials. Keto Claim: Use the evolutionary argument that humans evolved eating meat and fat – same argument the paleo folks used. Therefore, they believe keto diets align with human biology Debunked: A big study in Science in 2025 analyzed tooth enamel from skeletons of some of our oldest human ancestors, 3.5 million years ago, and found they ate predominately a plant based diet with no substantial sigh of mammalian meat. The isotopes matched herbivores (fruits, leaves and grasses, tubers, nuts, other vegetation) not carnivores. Keto Diet Risks It is worth noting, according to the Northwestern University Health site, there is a sizable drop out rate of participants in keto trials. Although, there are studies that show keto does what it claims in the short term, there are no long-term human data to support their claims that an animal-based diet does this efficiently. Important, research leans in the direction to indicate that keto's benefits – especially weight loss and glucose reduction, are transient and may not be directly related to animal food consumption itself but rather to calorie reduction and limiting glycogen. Long term prospective studies and systematic meta analysis evaluations consistently show high red meat consumption, full-fat dairy and animal fats are associated with the following medical conditions. This is true even when carbohydrate intake is low A good thorough study in JAMA shows that unprocessed red meat mildly increases all cause mortality – about 3-5% per 100 grams meat per day High red and processed meat consumption increases carcinogenic N-nitroso compounds and heterocyclic amines that raise cancer risks by up to 18% per 50-100 grams/day – from meta analysis in the European Journal of Epidemiology Dairy increases IGF-1 levels thereby too much calcium also suppressing Vitamin D and elevating prostate cancer risks by 79% per 400 gram dairy per day. Worse for processed meats that inreases risk by 21% per 20 grams/day – American Journal of Epidemiology Red meat is linked to hormonal disruptions and carcinogens contributing breast cancer – European Journal of Cancer Total unprocessed red meat consumption shows a modest 5% risk in pancreatic cancer per 100 grams/day. – From journal Clinical Nutrition Many meta-analyses on meats have a relationship to stomach/gastric cancer, but processed meats are worse than unprocessed red meat. From study in Nutrients – 24 studies showed unprocessed red meat associated with gastric cancer by about 25% increase risk for every 100 grams/day. Unprocessed red meat is linked to an 11% higher risk in overall cardiovascular disease risk due to inflammation and endothelial dysfunction. – from European Heart Journal Saturated fats in meats increases non-HDL cholesterol and blood pressure and raises the risks of ischemic heart disease by 119% per 100 grams/day red meat – from American J Clinical Nutrition Red meat diets reduce LDL Cholesterol much less than plant proteins and thereby increase atherosclerosis risks – from the journal Circulation Red meats (an processed meats also in this study) contributes to insulin resistance via heme iron and raises Type 2 diabetes risks by up to 51% per 50 grams/day – International Journal Environmental Research in Public Health Saturated fats in unprocessed red meat has a modest positive 12% increase with stroke risk – From European Heart Journal Unprocessed poultry consumption shows a modest 4% increase in incident cardiovascular events per 100 grams/day. This is believed to be due to arachidonic acid poultry – in JAMA Red meat contributes to sodium and saturated fat intact raising hypertension conditions by 14% per 50-100 gram/day – from journal Advanced Nutrition Saturated fats from animal products cause lipotoxicity and insulin resistance, that promotes hepatic fat accumulation leading to non-alcoholic fatty liver disease – from Cardiovascular Development and Disease High animal protein increases urinary calcium and acid overload leading to the formation of kidney stones – from the journal Nutrient Animal-heavy diets have low fiber and micronutrient intake that contribute to nutrient deficiencies. Also causes constipation that can lead to immune system issues. – from the journal Nutrients Red meat, dairy, and eggs disrupts the gut metabolism of carnitine and choline. This promotes TMAO plaque formation and inflammation that leads to atherosclerosis. – from Journal of Cardiovascular Development. Although unprocessed meat consumption has not been adequately associated with dementia and Alzheimer's – yes, processed meats do – there are studies showing red meat is associated with “subjective cognitive decline” (SCD) which is related to precursors to dementia and Alzheimer's. A study in journal Neurology links unprocessed red meat eaten at 1 or more servings per day to 16% higher risk in SCD. High caloric density from saturated animal fats displaces fiber that contributes to weight gain obesity.
