Have you hit a wall? Perhaps it's a wall of trouble. Perhaps it's a wall of temptations. Perhaps it's a wall of broken dreams. Perhaps you are feeling defeated and discouraged. You may be feeling that life is not worth living or that God is not worth trusting. Joshua faced a massive wall at Jericho, and the Bible says “By faith the walls of Jericho fell down after they were encircled for seven days.” Let's look at this historical event and see what God wants to teach us about faith.

Today, we're unlocking our debut episode of the Dark Tower Detour, our Patreon-exclusive series that studies the minutiae of Roland Deschain's epic quest. Hosted by Dan Pfleegor and Dan Caffrey, this exclusive series covers a range of topics that interest those who remember the face of their father. No character is too small. No detail too obscure. This kickoff episode -- recorded in September 2021 -- sees the Dans joined by Kingslingers co-hosts Scott Daly and Matt Freeman. Together, this blessed ka-tet bring its expertise to the ill-fated Battle of Jericho Hill, a tragic bloodbath mentioned in passing across several installments of the series. If you recall, the event was finally explored in full during a five-issue Marvel comic book run that ran from December 2009 to April 2010. Using that as a stepping stone, your heroes will examine the minds behind these comics, break down the belligerents on either side of the battle, and discuss the canonical significance of the Horn of Eld in this world and others. If you like this episode, you can find more installments of the Dark Tower Detour, including our latest episode that studies the similarities between The Dark Tower and The Lord of the Rings, by joining The Barrens: patreon.com/thebarrens, In addition to the Detour, we have close to a thousand hours of content waiting to be unpacked. Often when we hear about the Battle of Jericho, we only think of the walls of the city. Although they were an important part of the battle, they didn't tell the whole story. A story that can still be seen today buried beneath the earth. Welcome to the History of the Bible! After Jaren Hall's impressive start and unfortunate concussion, Joshua Dobbs took over after being a Viking only since being acquired in a trade just four days prior. Things looked rough early for Dobbs, but just as quickly, the 28 year old spot starter got more and more comfortable in O'Connell's offense, and ultimately lead the Vikings to a gutsy win in Atlanta! Fr. Anthony & Taylor kick off the show with some Italian stereotypes & two great moments for God's chosen people in the Old Testament: The parting of the Red Sea & the Battle of Jericho. We promise you've never heard the Jericho story like this! Next, Fr. Anthony actually did some show prep so that we can play Fancy Catholic Words. The good priest gives Taylor some words that only fancy Catholics would know and he has to guess what they mean. Can you do any better than Taylor did? They close the show with a conversation about leadership, failure & improving after Taylor was inspired by a recent Malcolm Gladwell story. This week we accompany Joshua and the Israelites as they begin the conquest of the promised land with the battle of Jericho. We'll seek to understand the passage as one part of the unfolding story of Scripture and also ask what are the main takeaways for the modern Christian. See you on the Sabbath! Pastor Josh
I'll be honest. This episode is about crossing a river. We cover 5 chapters of the bible, and at the beginning of it some people are on one side of a river, and at the end those people are on the other side of the river. If you're into rivers, this episode is for you. If you loved River Phoenix in the 1992 cinema masterpiece "Sneakers" then this episode is for you. If you loved the 1992 cinema masterpiece "A River Runs Through It" this episode is NOT for you. That movie was about going down a river in a boat. This episode is about crossing a river. Very different. But if you loved 1992 because of all the river movies that came out that year then this episode is for you. Also we're talking about Joshua. Not the world famous atheist podcast host. No. This is the original Joshua. The one who crosses the river. Podcast Josh has probably crossed rivers at times, but no one put that in the bible. No one stacked stones for podcast Josh. No one cut off the ends of their penises when podcast Josh asked them to. But also no one stole his shoes. So I hope that has successfully informed you on the content of this episode. It is now 12:11am the night before this episode comes out. I spent about 6 hours editing today and the episode was already pretty much done when I had started. I don't know what happened. No, I do know what happened. Linz went out of town for the weekend and no one was here to tell me, "You need to see sunlight or you'll grow mushrooms on your skin, podcast Josh!" This week Pastor Josh Burtram (Faithful Host) interviews his cohost, Will Wright (Political Host) who just returned back to his podcast seat after a harrowing medical endeavor with his 9 year old son, Jericho. On February 13th, Jericho was admitted to the hospital to undergo treatment and observation for a rare disease called Gastroparesis. This disease has left Jericho feeling nauseous, unable to gain weight, and as the doctor claimed, he was failing to thrive. The doctors at the Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) hospital knew this was a unique medical condition so they wanted to make this a case study. To begin they started with a brain MRI to rule out any psychological conditions that might have made it difficult for this young boy to tolerate and digest food adequately. What they found instead was a surprise to everyone. A rare posterior fossa brain tumor. On this episode Pastor Josh talks with Will about this journey, how he processed this information about his first born child, and the toll its taken on him and his family. Will then takes some time to thank all of his friends, family, audience, previous guests and others for the love and support he and his family have received during this time. This episode clearly doesn't focus on faith or politics, but the hosts thought it was important to memorialize this experience because of how rare it is. They hope that other families who go through this can feel comforted and know they aren't alone, and Will personally wants to make himself available to those who have young ones who may have either Gastroparesis or a brain tumor, as you'll hear in the episode how important community was throughout this experience. It's the one year birthday of the Other Six Podcast! Thank you to everyone who has tuned in over the past 52 weeks as we have journeyed through scripture together and unpacked so many different topics. This week, Pastors Chad, Matt, and Adam talk about obedience and how we see it displayed by the Israelites in the Battle of Jericho, as well as some of the archeological evidence that corroborates the Biblical story from the Book of Joshua. There is also discussion on baptism and what the implications of obedience and delayed obedience means for us today.

Have you ever met someone with unshakable faith? It's inspiring when you see someone continue to trust God and do what He leads them to do, especially when it doesn't seem to be helping. This week we look at Joshua and examine how he kept his faith in God when he didn't see anything that gave him a reason to.

The first obstacle the Israelites had to overcome as they entered the promised land was the mighty fortress of Jericho. The divine plan for conquering this city was unique and serves as a continuing reminder to us that God alone deserves the glory for all our victories.
