In this episode, we explore the historical and biblical context surrounding Israel's second judge, Ehud, during a time when the Israelites once again turned away from God after the death of Othniel. As a result, God allowed King Eglon of Moab—along with allies from the Ammonites and Amalekites—to oppress Israel for 18 years. We dive into the origins and cultural backgrounds of these three groups, particularly the Moabites, descendants of Lot, and their ongoing territorial conflicts with Israel. The story climaxes with Ehud, a left-handed (or ambidextrous) warrior from the tribe of Benjamin, who assassinates Eglon in a daring and strategic move, leading to Israel's liberation. This episode also examines archaeological evidence surrounding the City of Palms (Jericho), the political symbolism of the tribute to Eglon, and the significance of Ehud's actions, which brought 80 years of peace to Israel.   If you'd like to support "The History of the Bible", visit our Patreon Page at https://patreon.com/TheHistoryoftheBible. In this episode, Othniel, the "Lion of God," rises from the ashes of Israel's disobedience to deliver them from the oppressive grip of Cushan-Rishathaim, king of the Mitanni. With a family lineage tied to legendary warrior Caleb, Othniel's story is brief yet powerful—he leads Israel to a decisive victory, securing peace for forty years (or, in biblical terms, long enough to make sure the Israelites forgot why they were ever grateful). As Israel slumbers back into their sins, though, the peace quickly unravels, setting the stage for yet another chaotic cycle. They hit a snag with those pesky "chariots of iron"—a little roadblock that keeps them from finishing the job. God's got a plan, but the Israelites, being the rebellious lot they are, decide it's fine to make peace treaties with the very people God told them to drive out. And so begins their spiral into idolatry, with Canaanite gods and practices slipping in like unwanted houseguests. By the end of it all, the Israelites don't just worship Yahweh—they've got a side hustle with the Canaanite gods. Spoiler alert: It doesn't end well. We unravel the murky history of Jerusalem's conquest, where nothing is as simple as it seems. The Bible tells us the tribe of Judah "took" the city, but did they? From Abraham's encounter with Melchizedek to Joshua's victories, Jerusalem remains a prize that no one seems to truly hold. The Jebusites lingered, the city was burned but never fully conquered, and through it all, the Israelites' inability to erase the city's inhabitants foreshadows their spiritual decline. It's a tale of incomplete victories, forgotten kings, and a city that wouldn't die.   If you'd like to support "The History of the Bible" podcast, visit our Patreon Page at https://patreon.com/TheHistoryoftheBible. The ancient city of Hazor, a major power in northern Canaan, was notably significant due to its size and influence. When Joshua and the Israelites conquered Hazor, they destroyed it by fire to diminish its strategic importance. Hazor, previously under Egyptian control, was known for its Egyptian artifacts, including a sphinx and numerous statues, reflecting its central role in regional trade and power dynamics. The city's destruction, marked by intense burning and the desecration of cultic temples, occurred around 1455-1400 BC, aligning with Joshua's campaign. Despite the quick battle accounts in Joshua 11, the entire Canaan conquest took about seven years, including the subsequent defeat of the Anakim giants. Hazor's fall symbolized the triumph of the Israelites' God over Canaanite deities, contributing significantly to the Israelites' control of Canaan.   Hazor, Joshua, Israelites, Canaan, city destruction, Egyptian artifacts, sphinx, Canaanite statues, conquest of Canaan, Anakim giants, Northern Campaign, Southern Campaign, biblical battles, ancient cities, archaeological evidence, Joshua 11, Hazor destruction, cultural influence, ancient Canaan, religious symbolism   If you'd like to support "The History of the Bible" podcast, visit our Patreon Page at https://patreon.com/TheHistoryoftheBible. The strategic location of Gilgal served as a pivotal base for the Israelites during their conquest of Canaan under Joshua's leadership. Situated east of Jericho, Gilgal became the central camp where the Israelites would regroup after each military campaign. It provided a secure position backed by territories already conquered by the two-and-a-half tribes of Israel east of the Jordan River. This setup allowed for swift military operations without the concern of attacks from the east. Additionally, Gilgal housed the families and belongings of the Israelites while they engaged in battles throughout Canaan, ensuring their safety and stability. From Gilgal, Joshua orchestrated key campaigns, including the decisive victory over the Northern Alliance at the Waters of Merom, further solidifying Gilgal's strategic importance in the Israelites' conquest narrative.   Here's a link to a map of the Northern battle.  https://www.esv.org/resources/esv-global-study-bible/map-06-06/   Gilgal, Israelites, conquest of Canaan, Joshua, Northern Alliance, Waters of Merom, strategic location, ancient military campaigns, two-and-a-half tribes, ancient Israel.   If you'd like to support "The History of the Bible" podcast, visit our Patreon Page at https://patreon.com/TheHistoryoftheBible. From the rugged mountains to the fertile plains, they heed his call, assembling a vast army likened to the sands of the seashore. Prompted by the Gibeonites' plea, Joshua and his forces swiftly march overnight to aid them against the attacking Amorites. Joshua's prayer led to divine intervention, causing confusion among the Amorites, who had aid from hailstones. The five Amorite kings sought refuge in a cave but were captured and publicly executed by Joshua, their bodies sealed in the cave with stones. This victory initiated a series of campaigns where the Israelites conquered numerous cities in southern Canaan, subduing the region from Kadesh-Barnea to Gaza. Despite scholarly debates on archaeological evidence, the narrative emphasizes the strategic and divine elements of Joshua's military campaigns as detailed in ancient texts.   We'd love to hear your thoughts! In Joshua 10, the passage recounts the extraordinary events of hailstones and the sun standing still. Scholars and interpreters have long debated its meaning. Some suggest a supernatural provision of light, akin to the Exodus narrative, while others propose a literal cessation of the sun and moon's movement, possibly linked to Earth's rotation. Another view dismisses it as a poetic embellishment, while some suggest a solar eclipse as an explanation, despite dating issues and eclipse duration. Traditional interpretations focus on prolonging daylight for battle, yet Joshua's prayer direction contradicts eclipse timing. A modern legend suggests a missing day in historical records but lacks substantiation. Alternatively, scholars explore a spiritual interpretation, viewing it as an omen. In ancient belief systems, celestial phenomena influenced strategic decisions, and Joshua's prayer may have aimed to disrupt expected omens, sowing doubt among enemies. The significance of celestial events underscores their strategic implications in warfare. Ultimately, interpretations remain contested, reflecting the complexity of reconciling historical accounts with theological and scientific perspectives.   Joshua 10, sun standing still, moon, supernatural occurrence, celestial omens, historical interpretation, theological perspective, scientific analysis.   If you want to support the show, check out our Patreon Page (https://patreon.com/TheHistoryoftheBible)  To give feedback on The History of the Bible click the link (https://forms.gle/AtzUReJ8gLuFYPaP8).
