Friends of the Rosary,Today is the Memorial Day of St. Pius V, a 16th-century Dominican friar and Pope, known for his intense devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary and his promotion of the Holy Rosary.Often referred to as the "Pope of the Rosary," he established the Feast of Our Lady of the Holy Rosary in 1573, commemorating the victory at Lepanto, and wrote a papal document solidifying the Rosary as a powerful prayer tool. Its document, the Papal Bull "Consueverunt Romani Pontifices," issued in 1569, confirmed the indulgences granted to those who prayed the Rosary.St. Pius V actively encouraged the use of the Rosary, calling upon Christians across Europe to pray it fervently. He lived a life of holiness and reform. In 1572, when he passed away, his final prayer was, "Lord, increase my sufferings but also my patience."Ave Maria!Jesus, I Trust In You!Come, Holy Spirit, come!To Jesus through Mary! Here I am, Lord; I come to do your will. The importance of the Battle of Lepanto and Our Lady of Victory
Full Text of ReadingsMemorial of Our Lady of the Rosary Lectionary: 461The Saint of the day is Our Lady of the RosaryThe Story of Our Lady of the Rosary Saint Pius V established the feast of Our Lady of Victory to thank God for the Christian defeat of the Turks at Lepanto—a victory attributed to praying the rosary. Pope Gregory XIII changed the name to Feast of the Holy Rosary–originally celebrated on the first Sunday in October–in 1573. Pope Clement XI extended the feast to the universal Church in 1716. And in 1913, Saint Pius X set the date for the feast that we know today of October 7. The development of the rosary has a long history. First a practice developed of praying 150 Our Fathers in imitation of the 150 Psalms. Then there was a parallel practice of praying 150 Hail Marys. Soon a mystery of Jesus' life was attached to each Hail Mary. Though Mary's giving of the rosary to Saint Dominic is recognized as a legend, the development of this prayer form owes much to the followers of Saint Dominic. One of them, Alan de la Roche, was known as “the apostle of the rosary.” He founded the first Confraternity of the Rosary in the 15th century. In the 16th century, the rosary was developed to consist of 15 mysteries: joyful, sorrowful and glorious. In 2002, Pope John Paul II added the five Mysteries of Light to this devotion. Reflection The purpose of the rosary is to help us meditate on the great mysteries of our salvation. Pius XII called it a compendium of the gospel. The main focus is on Jesus—his birth, life, death, and resurrection. The “Our Fathers” remind us that Jesus' Father is the initiator of salvation. The “Hail Marys” remind us to join with Mary in contemplating these mysteries. They also make us aware that Mary was and is intimately joined with her Son in all the mysteries of his earthly and heavenly existence. The “Glory Bes” remind us that the purpose of all life is the glory of the Trinity. The rosary appeals to many. It is simple. The constant repetition of words helps create an atmosphere in which to contemplate the mysteries of God. We sense that Jesus and Mary are with us in the joys and sorrows of life. We grow in hope that God will bring us to share in the glory of Jesus and Mary forever. Saint of the Day, Copyright Franciscan Media

Friends of the Rosary, Today, October 7, is the Memorial of Our Lady of the Rosary. The feast was instituted to honor Immaculate Mary for the Christian victory over the Turks at Lepanto on October 7, 1571. This victory, due to the recitation of the Rosary, saved Europe from being overrun by the forces of Islam. Pope St. Pius V and all Christians had prayed the Rosary for victory. He was a very holy Dominican who walked around Rome barefoot. He ate just to sustain himself and fasted frequently. Ave Maria!Jesus, I Trust In You! Come, Holy Spirit, come! In these dark times, we must fight evil with the most powerful weapons we have. The Rosary is foremost among them. Join the Great Rosary Campaign today at: www.GreatRosaryCampaign.com.The Great Rosary Campaign is a yearlong mission for the conversion of cultural leaders. We will announce a weekly call to pray every Sunday for specific fallen-away Catholics and non-Catholics.Today will be the one exception, since the Feast of Our Lady of the Rosary happens to fall on a Monday this year. Originally, it was called the Feast of Our Lady of Victory, in commemoration of the victory of the naval forces of the Holy League against the Ottoman Empire at the Battle of Lepanto on October 7, 1571. St. Pope Pius V asked all the soldiers and leaders to pray the Rosary. On the day of the battle, which was hundreds of miles away, he received a revelation that the Catholic forces had won a great victory. He called for the Cardinals, priests, and officials to offer thanks to God that very day, despite the fact that he only received received final confirmation of the victory weeks later.Countless Saints and Popes have told us that the Rosary is incredibly powerful for three things in particular:1. Keeping the Faith2. Moral renovation3. Conversions of non-CatholicsThe Great Rosary Campaign is also based on several biblical themes and principles.First, PRAY FOR OUR BRETHREN. “Pray for one another…” (Jas. 5:16). “So then, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all men, and especially to those who are of the household of faith" (Gal. 6:10).Second, PRAY FOR OUR ENEMIES. “You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.' But I say to you, Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, so that you may be sons of your Father who is in heaven" (Matt. 5:43-44).Third, PRAY FOR ALL MEN, PARTICULARLY LEADERS AND THOSE IN AUTHORITY. “First of all, then, I urge that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings be made for all men, or kings and all who are in high positions…” (1 Tim. 2:1-2).Fourth, GOING INTO BATTLE WITH THE ARK. When the ancient Israelites came to Jericho, God didn't tell them to besiege the city. Instead, He told them to march around it with the Ark of the Covenant seven times, and on the seventh the walls would fall. We will now "march" in prayer for seven days with the New Ark of the Covenant, Our Lady, through the Rosary. We pray in hope that on the seventh day, a day especially devoted to Our Lady (Saturday), extraordinary graces of conversion will be given to those we are praying for.Fifth, EVANGELISM AND APOLOGETICS = LOVE + ARGUMENTS + PRAYER + PENANCE. Ultimately it is God who reveals Himself to a soul, and empowers them to say "yes" to Him by His grace. He chooses to use us, but He does not have to. We must remember that as we evangelize and defend the Faith, our arguments will be fruitless unless informed by love (charity), and reinforced by prayer and penance.Sixth, RETURNING GOOD FOR EVIL. “Do not return evil for evil, or reviling for reviling; but on the contrary bless, for to this you have been called, that you may obtain a blessing" (1 Pet. 3:9).THIS WEEK, the first week of the Great Rosary Campaign, we are praying for the Pope and Priests of the Catholic Church. The SUGGESTED PENANCE this week is giving up a meal.Sign up to take part in the Great Rosary Campaign today: www.

Full Text of ReadingsTuesday of Fifth Week of Easter Lectionary: 286The Saint of the day is Saint Pius VSaint Pius V's Story This is the pope whose job it was to implement the historic Council of Trent. If we think popes had difficulties in implementing Vatican Council II, Pius V had even greater problems after Trent four centuries earlier. During his papacy (1566-1572), Pius V was faced with the almost overwhelming responsibility of getting a shattered and scattered Church back on its feet. The family of God had been shaken by corruption, by the Reformation, by the constant threat of Turkish invasion, and by the bloody bickering of the young nation-states. In 1545, a previous pope convened the Council of Trent in an attempt to deal with all these pressing problems. Off and on over 18 years, the Fathers of the Church discussed, condemned, affirmed, and decided upon a course of action. The Council closed in 1563. Pius V was elected in 1566 and charged with the task of implementing the sweeping reforms called for by the Council. He ordered the founding of seminaries for the proper training of priests. He published a new missal, a new breviary, a new catechism, and established the Confraternity of Christian Doctrine classes for the young. Pius zealously enforced legislation against abuses in the Church. He patiently served the sick and the poor by building hospitals, providing food for the hungry, and giving money customarily used for the papal banquets to poor Roman converts. His decision to keep wearing his Dominican habit led to the custom–to this day–of the pope wearing a white cassock. In striving to reform both Church and state, Pius encountered vehement opposition from England's Queen Elizabeth and the Roman Emperor Maximilian II. Problems in France and in the Netherlands also hindered Pius's hopes for a Europe united against the Turks. Only at the last minute was he able to organize a fleet which won a decisive victory in the Gulf of Lepanto, off Greece, on October 7, 1571. Pius' ceaseless papal quest for a renewal of the Church was grounded in his personal life as a Dominican friar. He spent long hours with his God in prayer, fasted rigorously, deprived himself of many customary papal luxuries, and faithfully observed the spirit of the Dominican Rule that he had professed. Reflection In their personal lives and in their actions as popes, Saint Pius V and Saint Paul VI both led the family of God in the process of interiorizing and implementing the new birth called for by the Spirit in major Councils. With zeal and patience, Pius and Paul pursued the changes urged by the Council Fathers. Like Pius and Paul, we too are called to constant change of heart and life. Friends of the Rosary, Today is the Memorial of St. Pius V (1504-1572), a Pope known for his deep prayer, fasting, and love for the truth. As Pius V, he worked to implement the Tridentine reforms, promulgated the first Roman Catechism, and formalized the mysteries of the Rosary. He organized European monarchs to defend Christendom against the Ottoman Empire, culminating in the victory at the Battle of Lepanto in 1572, which he credited to the Rosary. To Protestantism, which had proclaimed the Reformation, St. Pius replied by applying the decrees of the Council of Trent for the reform of the Church. Today's Topics: 1) Gospel - Lk 11:14-23 - Jesus was driving out a demon that was mute, and when the demon had gone out, the mute man spoke and the crowds were amazed. Some of them said, "By the power of Beelzebul, the prince of demons, He drives out demons." Others, to test Him, asked him for a sign from heaven. But He knew their thoughts and said to them, "Every kingdom divided against itself will be laid waste and house will fall against house. And if Satan is divided against himself, how will his kingdom stand? For you say that it is by Beelzebul that I drive out demons. If I, then, drive out demons by Beelzebul, by whom do your own people drive them out? Therefore they will be your judges. But if it is by the finger of God that I drive out demons, then the Kingdom of God has come upon you. When a strong man fully armed guards his palace, his possessions are safe. But when one stronger than he attacks and overcomes him, he takes away the armor on which he relied and distributes the spoils. Whoever is not with Me is against Me, and whoever does not gather with Me scatters." Bishop Sheen quote of the day 2, 3, 4) Father Chad Ripperger on the state of the Church, the state of the Country, and the state of the world. Which Marian apparitions give us hope? Which promises of the Sacred Heart of Jesus give us hope? Are we at a Lepanto moment, or better yet, are we at a Red Sea moment?
In 1571, William Shakespeare was only 7 years old, but the naval battle that occurred that year was pivotal forEngland, and indeed the Christian world, that continued to be celebrated and written about for centuries afterShakespeare. The Battle of Lepanto is the last naval battle fought exclusively with rowing vessels, known as galley warfare, and overall was a surprising naval victory for Catholics. Even James VI wrote poetry titledLepanto, that was in high demand as printed literature in England well into the start of the 17th century. Here today to discuss with us the geopolitics of the day and the Ottoman Empire that Shakespeare refers to as “the general enemy Ottoman” in 1603, is our guest and author of the book titled Battle of Lepanto, 1571, Nic Fields Get bonus episodes on Patreon Hosted on Acast. Called the Prince of Paradox G.K. Chesterton was one of the greatest thinkers and writers of the 20th Century. JRR Tolkien memorized all 143 lines of Chesterton's "Lepanto". C.S. Lewis once said, “the best popular defense of the full Christian position I know is G. K. Chesterton's The Everlasting Man.” Ronald Knox, the Scholar and Biblical Translator, homilizing at his funeral said, "All of this generation has grown up under Chesterton's influence so completely that we do not even know when we are thinking Chesterton".
