QP: Why are Portland School Construction Projects So Expensive?

In 2021, Sherwood School District opened the largest high school in Oregon. At 350,000 square feet, Sherwood High accommodates 2,000 students. The 73-acre campus includes a 600-seat performing arts center, a football stadium complex, and seven multipurpose sports fields. The total cost was $186 million, paid for by Sherwood taxpayers. The Beaverton School District is currently rebuilding Beaverton High School with a capacity of 1,500 students, at a cost of $253 million. The Portland School District is preparing to rebuild Jefferson, Ida B. Wells, and Cleveland high schools at an average cost of $362 million dollars per school. Each of the three schools will have a capacity of 1,700 students, though Jefferson enrollment is only 459. The School Board is planning to ask for the money in a May, 2025 bond measure. The details are still under discussion, but the bond must be referred to the ballot by February 28. Since the new Portland schools will be the most expensive schools ever built in state history, voters should be asking: What do the school boards of Sherwood and Beaverton know that the Portland Board doesn't?  If PPS Board members can't answer that question, they shouldn't refer the measure to voters.

In life, we all face difficulties and challenges that can shake our faith and make us question our beliefs. Janet Paolicelli shares one such experience in today's show. Janet describes a betrayal she and her family went through with their church leaders, an experience that shattered her trust and made her question her faith. However, instead of giving up on her beliefs, Janet embarked on a journey to find God in this difficult time. Janet's story resonates with many of us who have faced similar challenges within our faith communities. We often look up to church leaders and expect them to represent Christ. When they fail us or act in ways that contradict the teachings of the Bible, it can be deeply unsettling. Janet's experience highlights the importance of not placing our faith solely in the hands of others but seeking a personal relationship with God. Janet's experience highlights habits' significant role in shaping our relationship with God. By prioritizing time in God's word and seeking His presence throughout the day, we can deepen our understanding of His character and align ourselves with His will. Janet's journey serves as a reminder that our faith should not be dependent on external factors or the actions of others but on our commitment to cultivate a close and continuous relationship with God. As we develop these habits, we open ourselves to a deeper experience of God's presence and guidance. I am wildly cheering you on,

Step up to the plate (you know we love a sports pun!) for this week's episode as we chat with two inspiring local coaches and athletes about their time playing at Mac High. We get to talk with Lisa Macy-Baker, who was a national basketball champ and standout star on her MHS basketball team before playing D1 at Oregon State, and now coaches youth basketball and tennis. And local legend, Ross Peterson, who grew up playing sports in McMinnville and then becoming coach to many sports, but primarily baseball and both MHS and Beaverton High School. Both guests are members of Hall of Fames for athletics and coaching. We hear about their unique experiences growing up and excelling at sports in McMinnville and the lessons they learned that helped make them the coaches they are today. We spend a lot of time supporting our kids as young athletes and we loved hearing about what they try to teach our kids as they grow through the different levels of youth sports. You will leave this conversation feeling inspired by what it means to come together as a community through athletics.

Who's behind the curtain making the Market Dominance Guys the great podcast that it is? It's Austin Finch, an editor at Funnel Media Group, which produces Market Dominance Guys. In listening to this conversation between Austin and our host, Chris Beall, you would never know that Austin is the youngest guest ever interviewed for this podcast. Currently 17 years old, he has edited Market Dominance Guys for several years and has recently added Helen Fanucci's “Love Your Team” podcast to his editing responsibilities. In talking with this intelligent, thoughtful, and insightful young man, Chris asks about the challenges of podcast editing, including the pruning and grafting necessary to increase a podcast audience's understanding and to decrease the distractibility caused by any audio glitches or guests' faux pas. Austin loves his job and sees his editing work as that of a translator for the hosts' and guests' messages, and his goal as “Helping to Get the Message Across,” which just happens to be the title of today's Market Dominance Guys' episode. ----more---- About Our Guest Austin Finch is an in-demand podcast editor for Funnel Media Group. We Oregonians claim Morten Lauridsen as "one of our own", as the world-renowned choral composer was born in this state.  Lauridsen was in the first graduating class of Beaverton High School.  While Lauridsen has spent much of his time teaching at USC, he maintains a connection to the Pacific Northwest by composing on an island in Puget Sound, and visiting his home town from time to time to collaborate with local choral groups.  Two recordings were released very close to one another:  "Shadows on the Stars" with Oregon Repertory Singers and Ethan Sperry; and "Eternal Light", with the Chamber Choir of Europe, directed by Nicol Matt.  Mr. Lauridsen has high praise for both in his conversation with program director John Pitman, who interjects the chat with Lauridsen's transformative music.
