Welcome to Crushed by Margaret Cabourn-Smith; the podcast about unrequited love. Today's episode features wonderful actor, writer and reformed stand-up GEMMA WHELAN. Gemma is a top tier guest - as she says, she over-talks. My kind of human. Absolutely eye-watering tales of penis-worrying on Game of Thrones, and fawning over Kevin McCloud on The One Show, as well as the sweetness of sending overly intense texts to the man she ended up marrying. Look out for her forthcoming film The Last Disturbance of Madeline Hynde which is written and directed by Kenneth Branagh which she stars in alongside Jodie Comer, Patricia Arquette and Michael Sheen. Thanks for downloading and supporting us. It feels like a community effort (like cleaning up after a riot) and I appreciate it. Come and find us... On Substack at crushedbymcs; where if you subscribe, you'll have access to the podcast ad-free and exclusive content from me as well as a lot of gushy love from me. It's not currently owned by a terrifying billionaire so that's a bonus. On Instagram @crushedbymcs where you'll find heartfelt ramblings and sparkly outfits. On email, where you can send us anecdotes, adoration and arguments crushedbymcs@gmail. Who doesn't love post!? And if you want to do nothing but simply chuck me £4 to buy myself some sellotape and a copy of the Radio Times to make a collage, head for ko-fi.com/crushedbymcs Just out of interest: you can see me in Cheaters on BBCiPlayer currently but be warned it's very much not safe for work. ie: it's full of boobs. Why yes! We are watching the 2020 film adaptation of Jane Austen's Emma this week! And yes, we were all shocked that Lydea agreed to watch it. Anya Taylor-Joy stars as Emma, a "handsome, clever and rich" young woman who tries her hand at matchmaking. She means well, but she nearly ruins a friend's chance at happiness and fails to recognize her own until it's impossible not to cause hurt feelings. Johnny Flynn (Mr. Knightly) and Mia Goth (Harriet) also star in this sumptuous and beautifully shot film.Email us at MadeMePodcast@gmail.comFind us on:Facebook: www.facebook.com/MadeMePodcastInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/myhusbandmademedoit/ Podcast artwork by Anna Eggleton of Treehouse Lettering & Design: https://www.treehouseletteringanddesign.com/

ITV crime drama The Tower is back on our screens for a second series, presenting our Hannah with an excellent opportunity to jump on the Zoom with Gemma Whelan, who plays DS Sarah Collins. They chat about the reputation of the Met, telling women's stories, Gentleman Jack, Upstart Crow and what exactly Gemma was doing with that fox.Jen's chatting to poet Maggie Smith about how when her career took off, her marriage declined, something she charts in her gorgeous new memoir, You could Make This Place Beautiful. They're also talking mumming, wifeing, and the division of labour. In Jenny Off The Blocks, Jen's talking about the US Open, among other things. And get your strategically placed Chelsea buns out for the lads, as the team revisit 2003's Calendar Girls. Plus, in the Bush Telegraph*, Britain's schools are crumbling, but won't somebody think of Gillian Keegan? If you're wondering why this week's runtime is so long, it's because we have a big old Q&A with Gemma Whelan, Jim Loach, Tahirah Sharif, Jimmy Akingbola, and Patrick Harbinson, all to talk about ITV's rather excellent new drama The Tower, which runs at the very end of this week's show (for reasons you'll soon discover). Elsewhere, we're getting reacquainted with our Dark Passengers for Dexter: New Blood on Sky Atlantic, seeking some rather problematic therapy from Paul Rudd in Apple's The Shrink Next Door, and exploring the opioid crisis in America with Michael Keaton in Dopesick on Star. Plus you'll get to find out which place in the galaxy Beth describes as "scallywag central", what everyone (James) thought of the new Witcher trailer, and what shows we all should have kept up with but, well, haven't.
A richly layered, moving and unforgettable novel of two families and the devastating secret that binds them, from the global bestselling author of THE GIRL IN THE LETTER. She shone the torch around and spotted some names written in the wall: Clara, Sara, Megan. Who were these girls and what had they been doing in there? She slowly clicked open the trunk and as she shone her torch in, something caught her eye. In the corner, a leather-bound book. She opened it on the first page: 'Tessa James, Patient Notes'. She began to read... When a little girl goes missing from Yew Tree Manor - the same house from which a girl vanished decades before - does the key to the present lie buried even deeper in the past, in the forgotten history of an innocent midwife accused of betrayal? When six-year-old Alice Hilton disappears on New Year's Eve 1979 from Yew Tree Manor, suspicion immediately falls on local boy Bobby James. Bobby claims he knows nothing about it but his family has a grievance against Alice's landowner father. Tragically the child is never found. Decades later, Willow James, an architect working on a development at Yew Tree Manor, discovers that the land surrounding the house is holding a secret. And when another little girl goes missing from Yew Tree, Willow realises the key to her disappearance lies in the history of the house, and the two families attached to it. A terrible wrong needs to be made right...and to uncover it, Willow must unravel events from 1945, when a midwife was falsely accused of a crime that happened at Yew Tree Manor... A family isolates themselves on an island to protect their daughters from the toxicity of the wider world—until their father disappears and strange men and a boy wash up on the shore. This atmospheric dystopian fable is told through alternating perspectives of the three daughters. The eldest, Grace, is narrated in a cool, flinty voice by Morfydd Clark, which contrasts with the enthusiasm and longing Gemma Whelan imbues into Lia’s voice. Hannah Murray narrates chapters that tell the story of all three sisters. The poetic language and quick chapters will draw listeners in, as will the mysteries of the outside world and the cruel “therapies” performed on the girls by their parents. The Moorside, which airs on BBC1 at 9pm tonight, is a drama about events surrounding the disappearance of nine year old Shannon Matthews in 2008. Jack Docherty and Gemma Whelan join us for part two of this Badults Special mini series, and it is a long rambly corker of an episode full of dodgy stories, dodgier accents and the dodgiest legal arguments you're ever likely to hear. Plus there's scurrilous gossip about REDACTED and REDACTED which almost derailed the podcast completely. Thanks to Gary Ogden for the brilliant artwork - go and check out his other stuff here. http://gogdenart.tumblr.com Hopefully we'll be back with more episodes later in the year - do keep your eyes peeled and come and sees the show live if you can. Also, please do evangelically spread the good news of #flatslam with all your friends and acquaintances. And don't forget to tune in to Badults on Mondays at 10pm on BBC3! Hey there! It's a surprise mini Flatslam podcast - the first of two to mark the second series of Pappy's sitcom Badults on BBC3. What you're hearing here is Pappy's warm up before our last podcast recording at London's Soho Theatre in April. Unlikely as it sounds, it is fun stuff and should whet the appetite ahead of a bumper podcast proper (winging its way towards you in the very near future). Don't forget to tune in to Badults on Monday June 2nd at 10pm on BBC3! See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
