Ep. 297 A.J. Swoboda - A Teachable Spirit

Shifting Culture

A.J. Swoboda is back on the podcast for the third time. This time we are sitting down to talk about A Teachable Spirit. He hit on something that I think is sorely missing in this world today: being teachable. In a world often drawn sharply into polarized camps, where dialogue seems overshadowed by ideological extremes, cultivating a teachable spirit becomes more than a virtue, it becomes an act of quiet revolution. But what exactly does it mean to approach life, faith, and community with genuine humility and openness, even when our convictions run deep? Our conversation explores what it truly means to possess a teachable spirit, how to stand firmly in our beliefs while also actively listening to, honoring, and learning from those who are different than us. We'll explore themes of humility, empathy, wisdom, discernment and the careful balancing act of maintaining convictions while remaining open to growth and change. This is an important conversation, so join us as we unpack the practice of discerning truth in a fragmented world, and how holding our beliefs can transform both our inner and outer worlds and enable us to have a teachable spirit. Rev. A. J. Swoboda (Ph.D., Birmingham) is the associate professor of Bible and Theology at Bushnell University. He served as a college pastor on the University of Oregon campus for nearly ten years. For another decade, he planted and pastored an urban church in Portland, Oregon, called Theophilus, which continues to worship today. He leads a Doctor of Ministry program around Spiritual Formation and Soul Care at Friends University. He has taught at the London School of Theology, LIFE Pacific, Southeastern University, and Multnomah University. He is the author of over ten books, including Redeeming How We Talk (Moody), After Doubt (Brazos), and the award-winning Subversive Sabbath (Brazos). He hosts the Slow Theology podcast (w. Dr. Nijay Gupta) and writes the widely read Low-Level Theologian Substack. Questions? Feedback? Together, they launched JSA+AI, the first fully AI-enabled learning management system in U.S. higher ed, and introduced Neogogy, a new student-centered educational framework designed for the AI age. This episode explores how AI is redefining faculty roles, reducing administrative burden, and making online learning more interactive, efficient, and human. What You'll Take Away:Mergers can be more than survival tactics—with vision and alignment, they can become platforms for transformation.AI doesn't replace educators—it repositions them to focus more on mentorship, expertise, and student impact.A strong innovation model includes a sandbox—Jessup Global operates as a branch campus to test, refine, and scale new approaches before full rollout.References: Dr. Alin VrancilaJessup UniversityFind out more about Neogogy here: www.neogogy.ai    https://neogogy.ai/whitepapers  Subscribe or follow TRANSFORMED wherever you listen, to get the latest episode when it drops and hear directly from leaders and innovators in higher ed tech and digital transformation best practices.Find and follow us on LinkedIn at https://www.linkedin.com/company/higher-digital-inc

When scholars examine the writing, copying, and editing of biblical text, they can discern a complexity in the Hebrew Bible. There is scribal activity at the copying AND editing levels. What does this tell us about the development of Scripture? And what do we do with Dead Sea scrolls like Jeremiah that show us a complexity within the Jewish communities through the complexity of the scrolls themselves? Our guide through this is Dr. Karl Kutz who is a recently retired professor of biblical languages and Bible at Multnomah University and also a voracious explorer of the biblical text. If you feel nervous about these conversations, join us at the end of the episode to talk about why this is a valuable field of study instead of one that criticizes the Bible. Find out more about Karl Kutz HEREContact Cyndi Parker through Narrative of Place.Join Cyndi Parker's  Patreon Team!

Textual criticism is about. offering a critique about what the best reading of the biblical text is, because before you can translate it, you need to know that you've got the best reading possible. And to engage in textual criticism, you need to have a fascination with biblical languages and biblical culture and biblical history. If it sounds complicated, it sort of is. But we have a great guide to walk us through what textual criticism is and why it matters. Dr. Karl Kutz is a recently retired professor of biblical languages and Bible at Multnomah University, and he is a voracious explorer of the biblical text. Find out more about Karl Kutz HEREContact Cyndi Parker through Narrative of Place.Join Cyndi Parker's  Patreon Team!

It's an easy way to support our work.Devin: Rosa Lee, what do you see as your superpower?Rosa Lee: Growing up in the church, I just kind of saw through a bunch of the crap, if you will, about what people thought church was about and saw I had a clear vision of that. What my faith needed to be about was figuring out what Jesus would do and doing it.Devin: What's your superpower, Leroy?Leroy: I've been a person who can look out and do something and bring people together to do something scary.Rosa Lee Harden and her husband and business partner, Kevin Doyle Jones, founded Neighborhood Economics as a community-focused version of the highly successful SoCap event series they created.“Back in 2008, my husband, Kevin Jones, and a bunch of us started this organization called SoCap,” Rosa Lee said. “We decided after about a decade that we wanted to go more downstream, if you will, and start working with economics in a way that could change neighborhoods for good.”The next Neighborhood Economics event is in San Antonio, Texas, on February 26 - 28, 2024. The event will feature about 70 speakers in 42 sessions over the three days.Leroy Barber, the executive director of Neighborhood Economics, joined us for this conversation. He says the enterprise brings together the world of impact investing and social entrepreneurship with his traditional focus on community development and church work. The connection to faith is more overt than implied, as it was at SoCap, recognizing faith leaders' and organizations' roles in repairing local economies. “We are mostly Christians in our organization, but we believe that faith writ large, not just Christianity, is the glue that holds the moral compass of the economy together,” Rosa Lee said. “It's important for people of faith to be in conversation with the economy.”A vital element of the event is bringing about a dozen foundations together to talk about patient capital's role in local community investing.Rosa Lee and Leroy both bring their superpowers to work. Rosa Lee's early conviction to do what Jesus would and Leroy's ability to get people together to complete scary community projects enable them to impact communities through their events.AI Episode Summary1. Devin Thorpe introduces Rosa Lee Harden, founder of Neighborhood Economics, and her colleague Leroy Barber as his guests on the "Superpowers for Good" show.2. Rosa Lee talks about starting SoCap in 2008, focusing on global impact investing, and later creating Neighborhood Economics with a more local approach to building economic justice in neighborhoods through ideas and community collaboration.3. Neighborhood Economics hosts events that bring together around 300 people to discuss actionable ways of making positive changes in local communities with input from national experts.4. Leroy Barber joined the initiative after being invited to SoCap, realizing the potential connections between social entrepreneurship, impact investing, and local community development.5. Rosa Lee highlights the purpose of Neighborhood Economics as a platform for facilitating discussions that SoCap couldn't cater to, such as impact investing for specific local contexts, and emphasizes the role of faith as a moral compass in economy-related conversations.6. Leroy explains the importance of the faith community as a mobilizer for local economic efforts, fostering a merge between the financial world and faith-directed community action.7. Rosa Lee shares details about an upcoming event in San Antonio, Texas, providing a platform for discussing various topics like reversing redlining, equitable homeownership, and employee-owned business models, alongside sessions about the role of faith in economic justice.8. Rosa Lee considers one of her superpowers to be her ability to see through superficial religious motivations and focus on living out her faith through actions that reflect a divine dream for the world, as well as her exceptional capability to organize large events without stress.9. Leroy identifies his superpower as the ability to bring people together to undertake challenging and transformative community work, fostering relationships and building unlikely alliances.10. Rosa Lee invites viewers to the Neighborhood Economics event and provides contact information for both her and Leroy—Rosa Lee at rosalee@neighborhoodeconomics.org and Leroy at leroy@neighborhoodeconomics.org—for anyone interested in connecting or learning more about their work.To help others learn about Neighborhood Economics, share this post. How to Develop Doing As Jesus Would As a SuperpowerSoCap is the living manifestation of the power of Rosa Lee's influence. Her faith led her to keep the balance at the events on impact, so the focus didn't shift entirely to making money.“The idea that was emerging in the early 2000s, that you could invest for profit in mission-based businesses, that businesses should have a mission and that they should be doing good, and that you could follow your money through that path has proved to be true,” she says. In those early days of SoCap, her influence helped to maintain the balance.By following Rosa Lee's example, you can increase your ability to apply principles of your faith in contexts outside of worship services. With practice, this could become a superpower that enables you to do more good in the world. How to Develop Completing Scary Community Projects As a SuperpowerLeroy explains his superpower:My superpower is to convince people on the margins in local neighborhoods who've been underneath it for so long and are not resourced that this is possible. [Impact investors and social entrepreneurs] exist, and you can come meet them. We're going to pull all of y'all together, right? And something powerful can and will keep happening. I love the idea of that because people don't believe that that's there. My superpower is convincing people it's there.By following Leroy's example, you can make bringing people together to tackle scary problems something that you can do, too. With practice, you can make it a superpower that enables you to do more good in the world.Remember, however, that research into success suggests that building on your own superpowers is more important than creating new ones or overcoming weaknesses. You do you!Guest ProfileAbout Neighborhood Economics: Neighborhood Economics convenes, recruits, and connects people repairing local economies. 183. Challenging a Commodifying Culture in Ministry, with Paul Louis Metzger, author of More Than Things

We live in a world in which it is so easy to demonize and dehumanize people who are not like us.  Or we categorize people and forget their humanity. But that's the exact opposite of what Jesus did.  Jesus humanized people.  He treated every human being as a beloved child of God.  Jesus treated every individual he encountered as a person. That's what we're discussing in this conversation with Paul Louis Metzger, the author of More Than Things: A Personalist Ethics for a Throwaway Culture.THIS EPISODE'S HIGHLIGHTS INCLUDE:Paul Louis Metzger is professor of Christian theology and theology of culture at Multnomah University and Seminary and the author of More Than Things: A Personalist Ethics for a Throwaway Culture. We have a tendency in our society to turn people into things. The issue of treating people as things has become very personal for Paul Louis Metzger ever since his son suffered a traumatic brain injury in a car accident several years ago.Personhood, according to Paul Louis Metzger, has to do with inviolability, unfathomability, and unrepeatability.Attributing personhood to one another is a matter of seeking to affirm an individual's agency, showing them respect, listening to them, and being present with them.Paul Louis Metzger reflects on the way those with Down's Syndrome are often thought of as having a lower quality of life, when the opposite often seems to be true.  And, yet, the value of their personhood is frequently in question.Markus Watson reflects on the ways churches tend to “thingify” people, both inside and outside the church. When we talk about people, communities, and families as giving units, that's the language of commodification.People consume, but people should not be reduced to patterns of consumption.Paul Louis Metzger unpacks the Prodigal Son story as a way of thinking about treating people as persons.“When we gain a sense of our significance and worth—not because of how big our church is or how well-known we are or whatever the case might be, how many books we sell, how many this or how many that—but because we are loved.  We exist because we are loved.  That frees pastors up to evangelize better.  To be better shepherds.  They're not going to be hired hands or wolves in sheep's clothing.”RELEVANT RESOURCES AND LINKS:New Wine InstituteUncommon Good, Uncommon God (Patheos blog)Books mentioned:More Than Things: A Personalist Ethics for a Throwaway Culture, by Paul Louis MetzgerThe Way of Chuang Tzu, by Thomas MertonBeyond Thingification: Helping Your Church Engage in God's Mission, by Markus WatsonLife of the Beloved, by Henri NouwenSharing Faith, by Thomas GroomeDownload the FREE course, Becoming Leaders of Shalom.

In life, we all face difficulties and challenges that can shake our faith and make us question our beliefs. Janet Paolicelli shares one such experience in today's show. Janet describes a betrayal she and her family went through with their church leaders, an experience that shattered her trust and made her question her faith. However, instead of giving up on her beliefs, Janet embarked on a journey to find God in this difficult time. Janet's story resonates with many of us who have faced similar challenges within our faith communities. We often look up to church leaders and expect them to represent Christ. When they fail us or act in ways that contradict the teachings of the Bible, it can be deeply unsettling. Janet's experience highlights the importance of not placing our faith solely in the hands of others but seeking a personal relationship with God. Janet's experience highlights habits' significant role in shaping our relationship with God. By prioritizing time in God's word and seeking His presence throughout the day, we can deepen our understanding of His character and align ourselves with His will. Janet's journey serves as a reminder that our faith should not be dependent on external factors or the actions of others but on our commitment to cultivate a close and continuous relationship with God. As we develop these habits, we open ourselves to a deeper experience of God's presence and guidance. I am wildly cheering you on,

In today's conversation, my friend and licensed counselor, Alaina Henry is here. In this important conversation, we chat about: - Mindfulness as a way to stop the flurry in our brains to become more aware of God's presences, - How we've both benefited from therapy and anxiety medication, and - How seeking help from mental health resources does not make you a less faithful follower of Jesus.  The Pantone color that I chose for this week is “deep lake,” because pursuing wholeness is deep work. For those of us who struggle with perfectionism, we often keep things on the surface, because we don't want to unearth our struggles or weaknesses. But when we slow down and become mindful of the present moment, we realize that with God's help, we can dive deep... because on the other side of the deep dive is holistic healing.  Alaina Henry is a Clinical Director for a local counseling center and a university adjunct professor of psychology. She has her MA from George Fox University in Clinical and Mental Health Counseling, and double bachelors degree from Multnomah University in Biblical Studies/Theology and Communications. She has trauma training in EMDR, and works with teens and adults.  In the past, her work has included a mobile crisis response team, agency work with children and families, and mental health assessing for children who had recently been brought into CPS care. She has also served in ministry as a youth pastor, and about every church ministry position you can imagine. She has been married to her husband, who is a hospice chaplain, for sixteen years, and together they have three kids. For fun, Alaina loves attempting to cook gourmet meals, drinking coffee, getting outside, and daydreaming about future travel.  --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/carly-bartlett/support

Sandy has an MDiv from Gordon Conwell Theological Seminary and a PhD from Harvard University.  When looking at Brenna Blain you might not guess that she works in ministry, with a body adorned in tattoos and piercings she doesnt fit the evangelical look many have grown up with, but that's just Brenna. Her ministry focus is on providing resources for churches, ministries and individuals who are seeking to find God in the midst of difficult topics and hard conversations. Brenna obtained her BA in Theology and Biblical Studies from Multnomah University in Portland, Oregon and has lived in the PNW her entire life. Her greatest joys are her two sons and her husband Austin. While she speaks on many topics, Brenna is especially passionate about God's involvement in our pain and personal struggles including mental illness, same sex attraction and abuse. Welcome back to the second episode in a 2-part series with Tim Mackie, co-founder of BibleProject! In this beautifully honest episode of We Are Vineyard, Tim shares about the incredible journey he's been on for the last few years, from the weak spots in his faith that were exposed during the disruption of COVID and recognizing a felt need for real community, to experiencing a physical healing that was accompanied by a word about all the Lord has been doing in him spiritually. Tim talks about some simple habits that he's developed to open his heart to the presence of the Holy Spirit, the way the Lord has been integrating things in his life that he didn't realize were out of sync, and the specific choice he made to share openly at his church about this process. Tim is married to Jessica, and together they are raising two little boys, Roman and August, in the wonderful city of Portland, Oregon. Tim is a creative writer for BibleProject. He's been fascinated with Jesus and his Jewish heritage ever since he became a Christian at 20 years old through an urban outreach ministry to skateboarders in Portland called SkateChurch. It's Season 2 of We Are Vineyard, and we're starting off with an exciting 2-part interview! Tim Mackie of BibleProject joins our host, Jay Pathak, to share about his relationship with Jesus as a child, the healing he experienced through the prayers of his church, and the disconnect he felt while attending school at a church. Tim talks about being reintroduced to Jesus through a dorky skateboarding-based church, and how following invitations from a cool leader at SkateChurch sparked his interest in the Bible, which transformed him from a disinterested student to an ignited scholar. Tim also shares about the lifelong friends he found through SkateChurch, meeting his wife through a mutual interest in Greek, and the origin story of BibleProject. This is a two-part episode, so make sure to come back next week for the second half of the story! Tim discovered the wonderful world of biblical studies and languages at Multnomah University and Western Seminary, and he had the privilege of doing a PhD in Hebrew and Jewish Studies at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Tim's greatest passion is to help people grasp the beautiful and compelling story of the ancient Scriptures and how they lead us to Jesus of Nazareth.
