The Smorgon family is one of Australia's great wealth building stories. The family emigrated from Ukraine in 1927, opening a Kosher Butcher shop in Carlton soon after. Through the 1930s, the family expanded into wholesale meat and canning industries and, by the time the decade was up, were exporting meat and canned fruit goods to the United Kingdom. Victor Smorgon AC and the family established Smorgon Consolidated Industries in 1942, and this is when things really started to take off. In the 50s, the family added paper and packaging businesses to their repertoire, while the 80s saw the addition of a glass and plastic packaging company. But it was the Steel industry where the Smorgon family displayed its appetite and aptitude for disruption, with Smorgon Steel going on to become the country's largest vertically integrated producer of steel and steel products. In 1995, with a heavy heart, Victor and the family divested Smorgon Consolidated Industries. In its place came Victor Smorgon Group, which is today one of Australia's premier family offices. In today's episode of The Rules of Investing, Livewire's David Thornton sits down with Peter Edwards – the late Victor's grandson and CEO of Victor Smorgon Group. We discuss: The Smorgon family's flair for disruption The way a family office invests, and The multi strat fund that has recently opened its doors to outside money.

He brings over 30 years of experience in architecture and urban design to provide leadership, design expertise and strategic thinking to the major projects shaping our nation's cities. He is regularly sought as a design leader, city making expert, public speaker, and is a consistent advocate for better cities through design. Here are some juicy quotes from Peter Edwards that you don't want to miss. [11:30] - “It's very hard to come in, and to be a poet, you have to come in and be a pragmatist. And one's journey to poetry is through pragmatics.” [12:33] - “The creative act is being able to look and see the golden thread that needs to be pulled and to pull all of those things together into a unifying and compelling idea that will carry the day.” [17:18] - “You're building a huge kind of foundation of advocacy for what might be the ultimate design. “ [20:47] - “I think of simply looking at the world, and seeing an underlying beauty that has attracted you that would like you to somehow engage with more.” [24:59] - “There are cities that often made of accidents rather than made of purpose for maneuvers.” [28:30] - “City making is a really fundamentally basic thing that we do every day. If you get into Bondi in Sydney, you will see a city made and unmade every day.” LINKS: Peter Edwards - Special Guest LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/in/peter-edwards-97b17129/ Instagram - archipelagoarchitects Website - https://www.archipelago.com.au/ Paul Fairweather - Co-host https://www.paulfairweather.com Chris Meredith - Co-host https://www.chrismeredith.com.au Two Common Creatives https://www.twocommoncreatives.com/podcastSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Taylor Culbert is a PhD candidate in Theatre and Performance at the Graduate Center of the City University of New York (CUNY). She is writing her dissertation on 17th century animal performances in Europe, looking specifically at how cultural narratives about animals shaped the ways that humans and animals responded to one another. When she isn't writing, Taylor works part-time training horses at a rescue in upstate NY. Taylor is enrolled in my on-line clinics so I've been getting to know her. I asked recently what her PhD dissertation is on and was so intrigued by her answer, I knew I wanted to learn more, so I invited her to join us for an afternoon's conversation. We began with stag hunts and some surprising revelations about animal intelligence. It's a conversation with interesting twists and turns. We enter a time warp between 17th century Europe and our current time which prompts Dominique to share stories about Cavalia, the theater company she co-founded that brought horses, acrobats, and other artists together in performance. Taylor mentions several references during our conversation. Below are the references: "Horse and Man in Early Modern England" by Peter Edwards "The Accommodated Animal" by Laurie Shannon (talks about "birds and beasts and fish" vs human/animal binary) "Birds and Other Creatures in Renaissance Literature" by Rebecca Ann Back (talks about animals having morality/emotions and the role that Descartes played - or didn't - in early modern understandings of animals) La Vénerie de Jacques Du Fouilloux This is a digital copy of an early edition of one of the hunting manuals that Taylor is writing about.

Today's guest is Peter Edwards.Peter is a natural therapist, who has dedicated his life to teaching others how to heal their bodies as well as their minds, after he had his dreams of competing in the World Roller Skating Championships shattered. Peter suffered a serious spinal injury in a surfing accident and despite seeking advice from various medical and health care professionals, he found little help for his chronic condition and sadly he continued to live in severe and constant pain. Peter shares that for the first time in his life, he experienced the bitter taste of depression and desperation. Based on a recommendation from a friend, Peter visited a natural therapist as a last resort and the results were life-changing.This incredible experience inspired Peter to become a natural therapist himself, when he learnt that given the chance, the body can heal itself and it was possible for Peter to cure himself of his injuries. He explains that by supplying our mind and body with the right biological conditions, we can experience the incredible healing and regenerative power of our own body. This is a remarkable concept that has been long forgotten in today's modern world. Peter shares that many of the patients who visit him are suffering from chronic pain or 21st-century diseases that are being triggered by a negative mindset, poor lifestyle choices and the impact of technology. He breaks down each of these key concepts, and offers us the seven key secrets to staying young and healthy, successful and sexy, all of which he has used successfully with thousands of patients. Peter Edwards has been part of a very special moment in my journey... Having devoted the majority of his career to fighting climate change and global warming, he found his way to China and worked his way up to the top of the industry – having served at the British Embassy in Beijing, the European Union Chamber of Commerce, and becoming the GM of an Environmental Research Company at the age of 28 – all of which culminated in him making it onto Forbes' first 30 Under 30 Europe List and also becoming a Global Shaper with the World Economic Forum. Despite all of this success, however, he suddenly found himself in an emotionally-crippling career crisis in his early 30's after feeling burnt-out and having lost the same passion for fighting climate change and global warming. In the darkest of days, however, he managed to lean into the pain, leverage his own network, and reinvent his entire professional identity. Now as a self-professed “Serial Side Hustler,” he has developed an incredible portfolio of side hustles including but not limited to working as a Moderator of large-scale international finance and banking events in Asia, Africa, and Europe Coach for CEOs, sport-stars, and A-list celebrities, and Host of a football TV-show with 8 million + viewers And even more impressive is that he managed to create all these side hustles with little to no experience all in the span of 5 years! With an experience and skill set like that, he is now on a new mission to help professionals that are struggling with a career crisis. Throughout the 2010s, these and other disparate acts of violence entered the public awareness like iso-lated tragedies - but there was nothing isolated about them.In this masterly investigation, veteran journalists Peter Edwards and Luis Nájera introduce listeners to the common cause of a near-decade of chaos. Meet the Wolfpack, millennial-aged gangsters from across the spectrum of Canada's underworld. Vying to fast-track their way into the criminal void left by the death of Montreal godfather Vito Rizzuto, the Wolfpack sought advantage in a steady supply of cocaine from El Chapo Guzmán's Sinaloa cartel, among the deadliest and most far-reaching of criminal organizations. The juniors had just stepped into the big leagues. This is the roiling landscape of The Wolfpack, a brilliant examination of a time of criminal disruption and rapid adaptation, when one gang's unchecked ambition unwittingly gave away the most hotly contested corner of the Canadian underworld without a fight. Brazen criminal disruptors or entitled upstarts looking to get rich without paying their dues - whatever you think of them, you will never forget the Wolfpack.
