In 1975, track and field was a major sport in the U.S.A. and across the globe and there was no bigger race than the mile. So in Kingston, Jamaica, they had the best milers in the world gather for the latest Dream Mile, and for Filbert Bayi of Tanzania, that's just what it was… a dream mile. He hit the tape with a time of 3 minutes and 51 seconds, setting a world record by a tenth of a second and landing him on the cover of the May 26th, 1975 issue of Sports Illustrated. Two other runners were on the cover with Bayi… trying to chase him down and run to glory. Marty Liquori was one of them and while he would finish 2nd in the race, he ran the best time of his life at 3:52.2. Running sub 4-minute miles was nothing new to Marty. He first did in 1967 when he became the 3rd American high schooler to do so while attending Essex Catholic High School in Newark, NJ. From there he went to Villanova and made the 1968 US Olympic team as a 19-year old freshman but suffered a stress fracture in the finals of the 1,500 meter run. Being on the cover of SI was nothing new to Liquori. Four years earlier he was on the cover of Sports Illustrated in May of 1971 when he beat another legendary runner, Jim Ryun in the original Dream Mile race. Despite the big win for Liquori, he told us on the Past Our Prime podcast that the week leading up to the race was a miserable experience and that he could never get used to what the Jordan's and LeBron's of today have to go through on a daily basis. He tells us that his rivalry with Jim Ryun was strictly on the track and that they didn't get to know each other very well until almost 40 years after their famous race. He says that even though he ran his best in the Bayi race he could have done even better if not for a mistake on the final lap and that the strategy used by Bayi was the difference in the race. And he tells us that he still plays softball, rides a bike, paddles around in a kayak and plays guitar in a band… The man does a little bit of everything and he does it all rather well. While at the height of his career he founded the Athletics Attic footwear chain…at the age of 23! He continued racing competitively until 1980 while also starting a broadcasting career for ABC sports that saw him cover numerous Olympics and major races for over 30 years. He ran into the record books and into at least 16 different Hall of Fames including the National Track and Field Hall of Fame and the Collegiate Athlete Hall of Fame. In the 70's, track and field was bigger than the NBA and and Marty was in the center of it all. He stops long enough to tell us all about it on the Past Our Prime podcast. In Part 1 of this week's Next on the Tee, I'm joined by two of the most legendary PGA Professionals the game has ever known—quite possibly ranked 1 and 1A on that list. First up is PGA Professional Hall of Famer Bob Ford. Bob's accolades span across four Hall of Fames, the prestigious William D. Richardson Award from the Golf Writers Association of America, and the Bobby Jones Award—one of the highest honors in the game. He's served as Head Professional at both Oakmont and Seminole, and his coaching tree reaches wider than any in history. If you've watched the U.S. Open over the past decade, you've likely heard his voice—he's been the official Starter since 2017 and will continue as long as he wants the job. Bob shares his insights on this year's Masters, what to expect from the U.S. Open's return to Oakmont, and, as a proud Yinzer, throws in some thoughts on the Steelers. Then, I'm honored to welcome another giant in the game—Suzy Whaley. A Hall of Famer in her own right, Suzy was the first female President of the PGA of America, is a Golf Magazine Top 100 Instructor, and currently preparing to Captain the U.S. Junior Ryder Cup team. She was also recently on the bag for her niece, Phoebe Brinker, at the Augusta National Women's Amateur. Suzy reflects on that experience, discusses the potential for a Women's Masters Tournament, and we explore a few exciting job opportunities where her leadership would be a perfect fit. Don't miss this conversation with two all-time greats.

John Wooden once said "Make friendship a fine art." If that is the case then Rex Sharp is Michelangelo. It has never been about where he has been or the athletic training facilities he has designed while at those schools, or the committees he has lead or been on, or the Hall of Fames that he is currently in. It has been about the people he has come in contact with over his 45 year career as an athletic trainer and how he can help them. That career started as a student athletic trainer at New Albany High School, New Albany, IN under NATA HOF member Jerry Bell and Don Ogle. Then in 1975 Rex made the trip to Muncie, IN to attend Ball State University. While at Ball State he won the National Athletic Trainers' Association Robert H. Gunn Scholarship for the nation's outstanding student athletic trainer in 1978. After graduation from Ball State he took a teaching job/athletic trainer at his high school alma mater in New Albany. After two years he decided attend graduate school. His uncle Randy Owsley was the head athletic trainer at Michigan Tech, a NCAA division II school in Houghton, MI. Rex decided to take the offer from Randy and spend 2 years in the upper peninsula getting his master's degree and ton of experience on his own. Next he was on to at the time was Northeast Missouri State, now Truman State. He was the first athletic trainer there and grew the program into a new athletic training facility and two GA athletic trainers. Then a phone call from Jim Dickerson changed the trajectory of his career. Ball State needed a Head Athletic Trainer and they were calling on Rex to lead the program back to prominence. Rex spent 11 years at Ball State and arguably some of the most successful years of the athletic training program. From new facilities, faculty, and athletic training students that have gone on to lead the profession. In 1996 Rex left Ball State for the University of Missouri. He spent 25 years at MIZZOU and again impacted the development of new athletic training facilities, team physician coverage, increasing athletic training staff, and started an integrated health care team to provide mental health support to MIZZOU athletes. One of the first in the country. Finally the establishment of an Undergraduate Athletic Training Education Program. In his time at MIZZOU he was on many prestigious safe guard and advisory committees for student-athlete health. Rex and his staff were recognized as the Athletic Training Staff of the year in 2000 and 2011 for the Big 12 Conference. He retired from MIZZOU in 2020. In 2021 he accepted the Director of Sports Medicine position at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in Daytona Beach, FL Rex was inducted into the Cardinal Sports Medicine Society Ring of Honor in 2005, The Missouri Sports Hall of Fame in 2017. The Missouri Athletic Trainers' Hall of Fame in 2018. And the New Albany High School Hall of Fame in 2018. He currently resides in Daytona Beach, FL with his wife Eileen. They are the parents of three adult children, daughter Audrey and twins Adam and Jared.

In Part 1, meet and get to know Nathan, who today owns and operates New Skool Clothing and Accessories. Nathan's parents are both from Myanmar, but fled their home country during years of political upheaval. They landed in England, where his mom's mom already lived and where Nathan was born in the early Seventies. He, his older sister, and their parents then moved to the Bay Area, where their dad had family, when Nathan was three. He attended preschool in The City, but then his parents moved their young family to Daly City, where they could afford to buy a house. His dad started his own business, and his mom worked at a bank, and that was enough to enable them to buy a famed Doelger home just south of San Francisco. Nathan went first to Peabody Elementary for one or two years, then to Westlake for second through sixth grades. After this, his parents enrolled him in a Catholic school to finish his junior high years. Around 1983, he started high school at St. Ignatius in The City and that ended up changing his life forever. He soon met Eustinove Smith, who was already a graffiti and hip-hop legend in SF. Nathan was just getting into hip-hop himself. He shares some insights on the genre's evolutions, from the East Coast to out West. Some kids were graffiti writers and DJs at his new school, and Nate (as he was starting to be known) started breakdancing and listening to the hip-hop. Nate had dabbled in art as a young kid, but his art matured when he hit his teen years, especially after he met his new best friend, E (Eustinove). Nate imparts some wisdom about the evolution of graffiti-writing styles at this point. His buddy E got a crew together and they hit the streets. The new crew called itself Master Piece Creators (MPC). Nathan became Nate1, E was Omen2, and their buddy Rodney was Orco. Spots around SF they hit up include several "hall of fames," which are spaces where people paint both legally and illegally. MPC ended up doing many "productions" all over town. He says when he graduated high school, it was never a question of leaving The Bay. Nate got into SF State, where he majored in business at first. But it took a counselor's advice to get him to switch over to art. Check back next week for Part 2 and the continuation of Nate's story. Check out the goods over at New Skool. We recorded this podcast at Nate's home and studio in the Sunset in February 2024. Photography by Jeff Hunt
Tony Boselli's goal growing up was to play high school football for Sam Pagano. He attended Coach Pagano's infamous Mile High Football camps and dreamt of running onto Knight's field at Fairview High School. His home school was Boulder High, so he told his dad he had to figure out a way into Fairview, or he would go live with his aunt & uncle across town. Tony's dad figured it out. Once he was under Coach Pagano's tutelage, Tony was moved from quarterback to the offensive line. Quite the change, but whatever Coach said was gospel to the tall, lanky kid who would grow even more and thrive on the line. Offers started to come in from colleges and Tony narrowed it down to USC and Notre Dame. When the Irish told him they weren't interested, Tony headed to California and was a multi-year All-American and All-Pac 10 player. In 1995, the Jacksonville Jaguars took Tony as the 2nd overall pick and his pro career thrived as a 3-time All-Pro, 5-time Pro Bowler and a member of the 1990's NFL All Decades Team. Life was good, until Tom Coughlin told Tony he was being traded to the expansion Houston Texans. Tony was upset and bitter for a few years, but eventually realized he and his family belonged back in Jacksonville. He remains there today. Since retirement, several Hall of Fames have enshrined Tony, including Pro Football, College Football, and Colorado Sports. Today, he's the Jags radio color commentator, runs his Boselli Foundation with his wife Angi and heads up a health care company.
New from award-winning book publisher Octane Press, Trophies and Scars is the profoundly personal and remarkably revealing story of the life and times of NASCAR Hall of Famer Ray Evernham, as told to New York Times bestselling author Joe Garner. With forewords by motorsport legends Jeff Gordon, Rick Hendrick, and Roger Penske, the book launched in March. Trophies and Scars traces all the twists and turns of Ray Evernham's fascinating life. A son of the Jersey Shore, he was dedicated to fulfilling his boyhood dream of becoming a professional race car driver, and by age eighteen, he was banging fenders with good success on the Northeast short track circuit. When his dreams of becoming an Indy car sensation literally crashed and burned, he turned to Roger Penske's International Race of Champions (IROC), before another brutal crash forced him to give up his Indy dream for good. It was time to change careers. As a technical crew leader rather than driver, he developed new skills and strategies critical to building successful racing organizations. A brief, ill-fated, and downright volatile stint on Alan Kulwicki's crew, turned into a "right place at the right time" scenario, sparking a seminal partnership with racing phenomenon Jeff Gordon. They would prove to be one of the most potent racing duos in history. Evernham shares previously untold tales of how the pair led the No. 24 team to three championships in four seasons (1995, 1997, 1998) and an astounding forty-seven wins in just 216 starts, revealing in candid detail how and why their storied relationship came to an end. Welcome to Game Changers with Jeff Newkirk, where we speak with people who have done something to make this world a better place. It's simple: inspire, educate, and let's go change this world! On today's episode, Jeff welcomes guest Laura Wilkinson, a three-time Olympian and Olympic gold medalist. She started diving in her freshman year of high school and was told she was too old to start a new sport. She won the US's first national title in diving and overcame great obstacles in 1998 to win the Goodwill Games as the only US diver to ever achieve this. Laura shattered her right foot in three places and only had 3 weeks back in the water before she tried out and made her first Olympic team. She beat impossible odds by starting in 8th place and then ending up winning in first place. She won the 2004 World Cup, 19 US National trials, and won the Olympic Spirit Award. She had been inducted into five different Hall of Fames and qualified for the 2021 Olympic Trials with her four children and husband cheering her on. Laura now has a podcast called Pursuit Gold, and she helps coach athletes to overcome roadblocks, compete confidently, and fall back in love with their passion. First, Laura talks about how she wanted to compete in the Olympics as a little kid in 1994 and wanted to be a gymnast. She realized at 13 that she was not at the right level to go to the Olympics for gymnastics, so she searched for another sport. She had coaches tell her she was too old to switch and that she was a waste of space. Authority figures are people you are supposed to look up to and trust. You can either believe them and cave in on yourself or defy them. She realized it was their issue and not hers, so it lit a fire inside her. She now has caution with the words she says and the impact they carry. She has had amazing coaches, but the best ones are when they create an atmosphere where you can do the very best that you can and achieve your dreams. They make it fun and know their athletes with how they think and how to mold them. After Laura shattered her foot, she went through mental training and preparation for the Olympic trials. She did that through visualization where she started imagining the actions and steps to go through for a dive. Her coach, Kenny, said she couldn't look back and think about the what-ifs, but she had to look forward and make a new plan. She studied video, visualized the actions of her dive, hobbled up to the diving board on one leg, and imagined every scenario with made-up competitions and her competitors. She was prepared for any given situation and was more prepared than she ever could have been without training physically. When she started to doubt, her teammates cheered her on, wouldn't let her quit, and believed in her too. We are sometimes so close to success when we are about to give up. After talking to so many athletes who have overcome incredible odds, she says the one thing they all have in common is a belief that it is going to work. Everyone believed in what they were doing and thought it was going to be successful. Next, they discuss faith in God and how God can use anything for His purpose and His good. Sometimes we have to go through the fire to refine us and make us better than before. She grew up in the church, left it, and came back to church during her sophomore year in college. Conversation about Vince Carter's recent induction into the NBA Hall Of Fame quickly turns into a discussion about the relevance of Hall of Fames in general, as Bob and John question the process by which players are inducted. The two also spend some time on the Toronto Maple Leafs in today's Bonus Bobcast, debating the value of both Mitch Marner and William Nylander, and wondering if Leafs captain, John Tavares, would be willing to take a pay cut to stay with the Leafs once his contract expires.

With over 35 years of invaluable experience in the realm of collegiate women's basketball, White has served as the Director of Operations for the Utes for the past six years, following an initial stint as an assistant coach from 2011 to 2013. Notably, she has also lent her expertise to the esteemed USA Basketball program, having served as an assistant on UConn coach Geno Auriemma's staff for the 2001 U19 Junior World Championships. Additionally, White contributed her insights to the USA Basketball Women's Collegiate Committee from 2001 to 2004. Her profound impact extends throughout the Pac-12 (26-years), where she has left her mark at esteemed institutions such as the University of Washington, UCLA, Northeastern University, the University of Oregon, and the University of Utah. White understands that the journey to success for aspiring athletes transcends mere college acceptance. She recognizes the myriad emotional challenges that can arise, threatening to derail athletes off the court. Leveraging her wealth of experience, White emphasizes the importance of fostering enduring relationships and providing unwavering support throughout the transition from the comforts of home to the demanding rigors of collegiate athletics. Upon retiring from Women's Basketball in 2019, she found herself contemplating her next steps. Time and again, her thoughts gravitated towards the welfare of student athletes and how she could continue to support them in a new capacity. Memories of the challenges many student athletes faced upon arriving on campus flooded her mind, and it was from these reflections that her idea for Next Step with Passion and Purpose emerged.

A detailed discussion about the Baseball Hall of Fame and its unique significance compared to other sports hall of fames. The history of the Baseball Hall of Fame, noting its early establishment and the time advantage it had over other sports. The notion of relatability, as the individuals highlight how baseball players are often more relatable to fans compared to players in other sports. In the card collecting world, induction into the Baseball Hall of Fame seems to have a greater impact on values. We discuss the varying collectibility of players in different sports hall of fames, highlighting examples of football and basketball players who may not have as much value in the collecting market. We touch on the subjective nature of hall of fame voting and the challenges of evaluating players' qualifications. The positional aspects of baseball don't translate as well to football or basketball, which influences the perception of hall of fame worthiness. There's a special aura surrounding baseball and the unique experience of visiting the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, evoking a sense of nostalgia and stepping back in time. We address the public nature of hall of fame voting in baseball, highlighting the transparency that comes with each ballot being made public. The speakers discuss the potential impact of online writers and their more intuitive approach to evaluating players, as well as the evolving qualifications to become a voter. Controversial figures such as Pete Rose and players linked to steroid allegations like Barry Bonds and Roger Clemens are also touched upon. We explore the baseball hall of fame's strict stance on gambling, leading to the exclusion of certain players. We raise the question of whether the Baseball Hall of Fame's conservative approach adds to its mystique and garners more respect compared to other sports hall of fames.
