Anthony Nadler talks with Spencer Graves about how he claims that conservative media are different. He is a co-editor of (2020) News on the Right and author of (2016) Making the News Popular. He is also lead author of a 2025 article on, "The Left Needs Media That Competes — and Wins". The basic theme of his work is that conservative media tend to segment media markets more on style and cultural identity with "news" that tends to be less consistent with other media than media more often consumed by liberals / progressives. He says we need media that work harder to connect with working class humans and help their audience understand how policies pushed by so-called conservative politicians are more likely to benefit the ultra-wealthy at the expense of the bottom 99 percent. Nadler is a Communications professor at Ursinus College in Collegeville, Pennsylvania, roughly 20 miles / 30 km northwest of Philadelphia. More details and a moderated discussion of issues raised in this interview are supported in the Wikiversity article on “Conservative media are different” with a video. The Saint John's Bible is a work of sacred scripture and art, including more than 160 hand illuminations. A team of scribes used ancient natural inks, hand-ground pigments, and gold and silver leaf gild to create the original, which was completed in 2011. The Heritage Edition is a full-size, fine art reproduction – and we have one in the Allison Library at Regent College. In this conversation with Rev. Dr. John Ross and Colton Whelpton, we learn about the Bible's history and craftsmanship, where you can find copies, the ways communities engage with it, and how it is used in the life and rhythms of Regent College. We consider the artfulness of corrections, the power of reading in community, and the interweaving of art with Scripture in causing us to slow down and experience Scripture in a new way. Interviewee BiosThe Reverend Dr. John F. Ross is the Executive Director of The Saint John's Bible Heritage Program at Saint John's University in Collegeville, Minnesota. Prior to his work at Saint John's, John served for 18 years as the Senior Minister of Wayzata Community Church in Minnesota. John completed his Master of Divinity at the Methodist Theological School of Ohio, and a Doctor of Ministry through the Chicago Theological Seminary.Colton Whelpton has been a member of the Regent College community since 2017, graduating with an MATS in 2021 and serving as the Library Services Manager for the past 4 years. He oversees the day-to-day operations at the library, maintaining a large collection of resources and overseeing a team of student employees. Colton is currently pursuing an MLIS from the University of Alberta, and is particularly interested in topics relating to theology and technology, Indigenous spirituality, and new monasticism. LinksTurning the Pages: The Saint John's Bible Heritage Editions Around the WorldSaint John's Bible Youtube ChannelAllison Library: Book a ViewingRegent College Podcast Thanks for listening. We knew to expect a ton of snow for every game between Collegeville and Holland. We knew to expect Susquehanna would have more than a fighting chance at Christopher Newport. We knew to expect a likely rematch of former OAC rivals. What we didn't know to expect was five road teams winning in the round of 32! Last year, which was the first year the playoff bracket had 40 teams, there was just one road win in the second round. Normal seems to be somewhere in between the two, but way closer to one than five. We should have known that Wheaton had a good chance at Wartburg. The Hansen Ratings even told us so before the game. But the win, nonetheless, was surprising, and we welcome Wheaton coach Jesse Scott to the podcast to talk about it. He discusses what quarterback Mark Forcucci looks like when he is at his best -- helpful info for someone who has only seen him play North Central, a game in which he was battling to get back from injury. He talks about his coaching and leadership philosophy, and which philosophy prof at Wheaton should be credited, or perhaps not, with helping mold that.  Patrick and Greg also go through each of the first round games. There is postgame audio from around a dozen of the 16 advancing teams, and we are grateful to the schools who got these postgame news conferences online or were willing to share them with us so we could bring this audio to you. We also hand out game balls, bring you through the stats of the week and we take your questions in the mailbag segment. That and more in this edition of the D3football.com Around the Nation podcast.

In a Minneapolis rehearsal room, a group of Somali musicians gathers in a circle, playing music rooted in the cafés of Mogadishu. The sound is emotional, rhythmic and steeped in memory. It's called “Somali blues.”“The lyrics are just showing you what it means,” says Ahmed Ismail Yusuf, the group's leader. The style is similar to what you might have heard in Somalia before the civil war.“It is this lugubrious, lamentation [of] love not returned.”Yusuf and the small outfit — called Araa — are rehearsing for an upcoming concert, “Meet You at the Crossroads.” The concert is co-produced by the University of St. Thomas' Jay Phillips Center for Interreligious Studies and the Cultural Fluency Initiative.“This is really about the life of the city. There are more cultural groups in the Twin Cities than ever,” said David Jordan Harris, who works with the Jay Phillips Center and curated the concert. “Yet, do we know each other? How do we learn about each other? And you know, no better method than our musical traditions.” “Meet You at the Crossroads” will bring together Somali blues and songs inspired by Black gospel music. The idea came from a previous experiment Harris developed with Beck Lee, who runs the Cultural Fluency Initiative. “We did sort of a proof of concept concert salon a little while ago where we where we juxtaposed Sephardic music and Somali music,” Lee said. “It was just interesting to be able to experience those two musical cultures and juxtaposition and talk about it.”This time, Lee and Harris invited Yusuf to lead the Somali music, and JD Steele to bring the Black soul repertoire.“I love cross-cultural, cross-genre projects, because I've been doing them my entire career,” said Steele, known for his long career in the performing arts, and as a member of the well known family band, The Steeles. “Combining multicultural communities, it just excites me.”Steele will perform with his own band and the MacPhail Community Youth Choir, which he directs. Steele and Yusuf are also collaborating on a new song that the youth choir will sing at the concert. During rehearsal with the choir, Yusuf said it had been a long time since he'd taken part in something like it.“The last one that I was [in], was in Somalia,” Yusuf said, adding praise for Steele's work with the choir. “Seriously, you can see the master in hand.”As the performances approach, Steele said the goal is simple: to leave people feeling better than when they arrived.“Because right now, the need for uplifting, encouragement and inspiration is very palpable in our communities. So you know that's our responsibility as artists — is to uplift and inspire and encourage,” Steele said. The first concert takes place April 6 at the University of St. Thomas, launching the school's Culture of Encounter Ideas Festival. Another performance is set for April 27 at St. John's University in Collegeville.Correction (April 4, 2025): This story has been updated with the correct name of the concert series.

Stewart joins Commonweal editor Dominic Preziosi to discuss how he first got involved in this work, the care and attention it requires, and why digitizing ancient manuscripts remains so necessary.  These texts, Fr. Stewart points out, are in a sense the original “internet of things.” Books and fragile documents carry not just the stories and ideas that connected diverse communities, but also the physical traces of the individual scribes and librarians who cared for them. Hark! The stories behind our favorite Christmas carols

Our final episode of Hark! this season departs from the usual nativity of Christ in a manger, surrounded by shepherds and angels on high. Instead, our carol centers on the singular icon of a rose. “Lo, How a Rose E'er Blooming” is a German Christmas song, first published in a Lutheran hymnbook in 1599. Although its believed to be much older, originating in a Catholic monastery with an uncertain date and writer.  And not only do we not know who wrote the text for our carol. The person behind the basic melody is also a mystery. The music is often credited to Michael Praetorius, a German composer, organist and music theorist from the 16th and 17th Centuries. But, Praetorius didn't compose the main melody; he only added the harmonies that have made this “the rose of all carols” among choristers and music maestros. Adding further to the mystery of this carol, the symbol of the rose is ambiguous. Depending on the translation and verse, the rose could represent Jesus or his mother Mary, who in Catholic mysticism is adorned with roses. Our heartfelt thanks extends to every musician, choir and soloist who gifted their music so generously to Hark! this season. On this episode we are especially grateful to: The Choir of King's College Cambridge, The Ignatian Schola, Cynthia Boener, Katie Green and Karen Hefford, Barbara Rowe for sharing the music of her husband, the late Bryan Rowe, Gary Cope and the Encomium Ensemble, the music department of Hope College in Holland, Michigan, Stephen Lynerd, Winter Harp and The Notre Dame Folk Choir, under the direction of JJ Wright, who walked us through the music of “Lo How A Rose” on this episode. Special thanks to the Benedictine monks of Saint John's Abbey Schola in Collegeville, Minnesota. Johnnie Magic up in Collegeville? Perhaps, if you're a fan. If you're Trinity (Texas) coach Jerheme Urban, you may come from a different mindset. He gives his perspective on the sequence events at the end of that game at St. John's in our Fast Five interview segment. Plus you'll hear from people on the St. John's side about the big win, and also coach Larry Harmon from Mary Hardin-Baylor and Matt Walker from UW-River Falls about the shocking, blowout manner in which that game went down. In addition, we hear from Johns Hopkins quarterback Bay Harvey after his team's win against Ithaca. Thanks to Riley Zayas of True to the Cru and Frank Rossi of In the Huddle for some bonus audio this week. In addition, we hand out our Game Balls, pull out our stats of the week, answer reader questions, put Greg on the spot and more in this podcast covering Division III football's Week 1 games.
