It's been a dizzying few months since Melanie Lauridsen, the AICPA's vice president–Tax Policy & Advocacy, last appeared on the Journal of Accountancy podcast. In fact, just the past week has been chock full of tax-related developments, mainly in Washington. Reflecting the news, this episode is publishing the same day it was recorded. In the Wednesday morning conversation, Lauridsen details the AICPA perspective on several aspects of the budget bill that could be voted on soon by the full House of Representatives. She goes into detail about the passthrough entity tax/state and local tax deduction, also known as the PTET SALT deduction, and why the AICPA is urging that deduction be preserved. What you'll learn from this episode: ·         The status of the House budget bill. ·         An explanation of the PTET SALT deduction — what it stands for, why it's complex, and why it's the AICPA's “No. 1 priority.” ·         Some of the “wins” in Lauridsen's mind related to Sec. 529 accounts and the Form 1099-K reporting threshold. ·         The top concern from a survey of members just after tax filing season. ·         What Lauridsen means by “fractures.”

It's not even five weeks into 2025, and already there's a bevy of news affecting tax practitioners. Melanie Lauridsen, the AICPA's vice president–Tax Policy & Advocacy, joined the Journal of Accountancy podcast amid all the tumult to update listeners on several fronts. Lauridsen discussed the latest on beneficial ownership information (BOI) reporting and the Supreme Court, how IRS service might be affected by various executive orders, and what aspects of a new tax bill or bills are being followed closely by the AICPA. One bit of related news happened Thursday, one day after recording. The Senate Finance Committee released a discussion draft, the bipartisan Taxpayer Assistance and Service Act, which includes provisions the AICPA strongly supports. The eternally innocent sound of the boy soprano: whether you're Christian or not, it's a sound that floats high and pure, far above our worldly cares. The boy soprano or "treble" voice has been used in Christian religious music for centuries, especially in England. True fact: Keith Richards of the Rolling Stones sang for Queen Elizabeth II in Westminster Abbey as a boy soprano! Since Medieval times, some of the Western world's greatest composers have written music for sacred services. The immersive ambience of great stone churches and cathedrals, the majestic tones of the pipe organ, and the massed voices of the choir and the worship community created the context; from it came a genre of sacred space music, including vocal and instrumental pieces, great liturgical works, and hymns and psalms of sublime beauty. It's a repertoire we come back to every year during the holiday season. On this transmission of Hearts of Space, another offering from our longtime guest producer for classical and sacred space music ELLEN HOLMES, featuring sacred choral and instrumental classics for the holiday season, on a program called "GLORIA." Music is by the boy choir LIBERA, MOZART, HANDEL, VIVALDI, CHARPENTIER, PADOVANO, STRIGGIO, PALESTRINA, MONTEVERDI, MOUTON, BENCINI, PÄRT, LAURIDSEN, and HOLBORNE.

On this episode of the JofA podcast, Melanie Lauridsen, vice president–Tax Policy & Advocacy for the AICPA, explains some of the tax-related repercussions of recent Supreme Court decisions. One case could have a dramatic effect on future rulemaking, and the other could have a decades-long retroactive effect. On June 28, the Supreme Court overturned its decision in Chevron U.S.A., Inc. v. Natural Resources Defense Council, Inc., 467 U.S. 837 (1984), holding that the Administrative Procedure Act (APA) requires courts to exercise their independent judgment in determining the meaning of statutory provisions, and courts may not defer to an agency's interpretation of the law just because a statute is ambiguous (Loper Bright Enterprises v. Raimondo, No. 22-451 (6/28/24)). On July 1, the Supreme Court decision expanded the time frame to sue federal agencies, holding that the six-year statute of limitation for lawsuits challenging regulations does not start to run until a plaintiff is injured by final agency action (Corner Post, Inc. v. Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System, No. 22-1008 (7/1/24)). What you'll learn from this episode: ·         Background on the Loper Bright and Corner Post decisions. ·         Why Lauridsen said that one of the rulings was unexpected. ·         Why Sec. 6045 broker regulations could now be “vulnerable.” ·         The reasons that, according to Lauridsen, the Loper Bright decision will not likely affect beneficial ownership information reporting requirements. ·         How legislators on Capitol Hill have reacted to the decisions.

The Patrick Coffin Show | Interviews with influencers | Commentary about culture | Tools for transformation

The emotional, some say spiritual, effect music has on us is notoriously difficult to put into words. It's sort of like analyzing why something is funny. The reality ever exceeds our verbal grasp. Why are minor chords sad and majors happy? Why, when you hear a song from your childhood is there a superglue of emotion attached, bringing you instantly to those moments long ago? This week's guest is one of the greats in the choral music world. If you enjoy music with a lush, cinematic sound created for multiple voices on the exquisite side, Morten Lauridsen is your man. The most frequently performed American composer of choral music, Lauridsen is a National Medal of Arts recipient (2007), he was composer-in-residence of the Los Angeles Master Chorale (1994–2001), and has been a professor of composition at the University of Southern California Thornton School of Music for more than 50 years. His work has been recorded on over 200 CDs including five with Grammy nominations. We're talking serious musical gravitas here. On November 11, 2018, a massive concert for international television is being held at the Brandenburg Gate in Germany to mark the centenary of the end of World War One. In addition to Welsh composer Karl Jenkins' Mass for Peace, the other piece selected is Lauridsen's beautiful Lux Aeterna. I predict not a dry eye on that night. You can imagine my surprise when, during the interview, the great man spontaneously began playing a portion of his classic O Magnum Mysterium to explain why the notes for the word “Virgo” ground the piece in a special way!   In this interview, you will learn: Why every artist has to risk failure; as not trying guarantees failure How Lauridsen became a late bloomer as a composer, at age 50, and maybe how you can, too Why poetry deserves a massive revival The importance of stillness and quiet for human serenity and creativity The mysterious way in which music connects us to the divine   Resources mentioned in this episode: O Magnum Mysterium performance  Lux Aeterna performance Profound talk by director Karl Paulnack to music freshmen at Boston College Conservatory  CD album, Morten Lauridsen: Lux Aeterna; Madrigali; Ave Maria; Ubi Caritas  CD album streaming, Lauridsen: Mid-Winter Songs  Connect with Morten: www.mortenlauridsen.net

J., Ly, A., Banks, M., McNulty, C. J., Kim, Y. S., Fenno, L. E., Ramakrishnan, C. H., Deisseroth, K., Root, D. H. Abstract: A unique population of ventral tegmental area (VTA) neurons co-transmits glutamate and GABA as well as functionally signals rewarding and aversive outcomes. However, the circuit inputs to VTA VGluT2+VGaT+ neurons are unknown, limiting our understanding of the functional capabilities of these neurons. To identify the inputs to VTA VGluT2+VGaT+ neurons, we coupled monosynaptic rabies tracing with intersectional genetic targeting of VTA VGluT2+VGaT+ neurons in mice. We found that VTA VGluT2+VGaT+ neurons received diverse brain-wide inputs. The largest numbers of monosynaptic inputs to VTA VGluT2+VGaT+ neurons were from superior colliculus, lateral hypothalamus, midbrain reticular nucleus, and periaqueductal gray, whereas the densest inputs relative to brain region volume were from dorsal raphe nucleus, lateral habenula, and ventral tegmental area. Based on these and prior data, we hypothesized that lateral hypothalamus and superior colliculus inputs were glutamatergic neurons. Optical activation of glutamatergic lateral hypothalamus neurons robustly activated VTA VGluT2+VGaT+ neurons regardless of stimulation frequency and resulted in flee-like ambulatory behavior. In contrast, optical activation of glutamatergic superior colliculus neurons activated VTA VGluT2+VGaT+ neurons for a brief period of time at high stimulation frequency and resulted in head rotation and arrested ambulatory behavior (freezing). For both pathways, behaviors induced by stimulation were uncorrelated with VTA VGluT2+VGaT+ neuron activity, suggesting that VGluT2+VGaT+ neurons are integrators of signals related to aversive outcomes but not of aversion-induced behavioral kinematics. We interpret these results such that VTA VGluT2+VGaT+ neurons may integrate diverse inputs related to the detection and processing of motivationally-salient outcomes. The Broadmoor psychiatrist and psychotherapist Dr Gwen Adshead shares her passion for choral music with Michael Berkeley. When people ask Gwen Adshead what she does for a living she sometimes tells them she is a florist, because she is unable to face another conversation about why she has devoted her life to working with ‘monsters'. Gwen has spent thirty years as a psychiatrist and as a pioneering forensic psychotherapist working at Broadmoor Hospital in Berkshire with some of society's most violent, and vilified, offenders. The author of more than 100 academic books and papers, Gwen recently co-wrote a best-selling book, with her friend Eileen Horne, for a more general audience: The Devil You Know takes the reader into the therapy room at Broadmoor to try to understand people often labelled as ‘monstrous', including serial killers, stalkers and child sex offenders. Gwen tells Michael about her work at Broadmoor, encouraging offenders to understand what drove them to violence, to face up to what they have done, and to try to find a future free of violence. She finds parallels in her work with music: the leader of a group therapy session has much in common with a conductor; and as a psychotherapist Gwen has to listen to her patients with the same concentration as when she is listening to fellow choir members. Gwen's passion for choral music runs through the programme with pieces by Tallis, Gibbons, Lauridsen and Verdi, and a Maori song that conjures up her early childhood in New Zealand. There was a study from BITKOM in 2019 showing this gap -> only 5% of Executives understand this topic and have the skills to lead those initiatives. Becky Lauridsen is the Founder of IOME - Guilt Free Self Care.  IOME is a membership organization that provides access to a supportive community in the areas of Mind, Body, and Soul, with plans that include access to discounts with community partners, monthly therapy/coaching session, and monthly small group engagements.   IOME provides the therapy/coaching/small groups, and partners provide an array of discounted services to members, including but not limited to massage, chiropractic, nutrition, yoga, fitness, skin care, travel, and interior design.  Becky is a LoCo Think Tank member, and founded the business several years after burning out early in her career as a therapist and leaving the industry.  She later realized her struggles were due to her failure to tend to her own mental health needs, and she founded IOME in 2018.  Her basic premise is that the mental health industry would be more effective if they could engage people in their mental health maintenance before they're in a terrible place.  Becky shares how it's not selfish to make space for self-care, and that you can serve others better if you keep yourself in good shape - Mind, Body, and Soul.
