Last week, the Portland school board unanimously passed a resolution allowing for the sale of its North Portland district headquarters to the Albina Vision Trust. The local nonprofit has been working to restore the historically Black Albina neighborhood through redevelopment efforts such as the construction of 94 affordable housing units it recently broke ground on. The idea for AVT’s acquisition of the PPS property goes back several years, and gained momentum last month when AVT presented its proposal to the PPS board, including a commitment to help the district find a new headquarters location that matches or exceeds the value of its current site. The resolution establishes a timeline of up to one year for a new location to be identified, along with various milestones that must be met. Michelle DePass, a Portland Public Schools Board member who grew up in the Albina neighborhood, and Winta Yohannes, executive director of Albina Vision Trust, join us to discuss the details.

As a backpacking guide and wilderness therapist in Oregon’s Mount Hood area, Melissa Mutterspaugh, AKA Mountain Mel, was almost horrified when the group would stop and people would pull out artificial snacks in the middle of a perfectly natural environment. The experience gave her the motivation and mission to create natural foods and food products to replace the “toxic” ones they were using. A clinical herbalist, Melissa has a use for most of nature’s plants. Take nettles, for instance. They sting, trust me, but Melissa will tell you that you can pick the top of the leaves with your bare hands, and if you chew the leaves from the top, the small hairs on the bottom side will crumble and you won’t be stung by them. And if you have chronic pain from some old injury, you can rub the underside of the leaf – the stinging side – and after you endure an hour or so of discomfort, you’ll find your chronic pain may be gone! Her clinical background was achieved by attending the Elderberry Botanical Studies school in Portland, Oregon where she learned the chemical properties of plants and how to harvest. Feeling the background was helpful but a little “hippie dippie”, Melissa wanted to know more about the human body and the mechanics of interacting with the beneficial elements of plants. She next attended Portland School of Traditional Herbalism, where she heard from some of the best herbalists around how natural elements dance with the human body to help heal itself. And along the way, we will talk about social justice, equity, inclusion, self-care and the importance of being a lifelong learner. We are so excited to have you on this journey with us!

Episode 15: Matt Jay (ASIJ 1999-2004) Curator, Arts Organizer Matt begins the podcast explaining his shirt, designed by "That Year" his label, and how his label came to be, and what the label means to him and how it is a symbol that goes beyond its title as a clothing label. The two discuss how Asian representation in popular culture has changed the past few decades, and how that has affected their personal perspectives in regards to Asians in the entertainment/art industries. Matt explains to Nick the ins and outs of Art school, and the type of career paths one could take upon graduating from art-specific colleges. Matt explains to Nick how his project "End of Summer" came to fruition, and how the program connects contemporary artists from Tokyo and Portland. Matt originally majored in film, but currently pursues an area of art more on the management side. He explains to Nick how although he no longer pursues directing itself, how there is a single thread, of art and culture, which connect from his time as a young film director as a teen to the curator and art organizer he is today. Matt also explains how his formative years in Tokyo, and at ASIJ molded much of the person he would become today. Matt Jay (ASIJ 1999-2004) Curator, Arts Organizer Matt Jay is the Founder and Director of End of Summer, a cross-cultural art program dedicated to exploring and supporting contemporary art from Japan. End of Summer exists to build a dialogue between the U.S., specifically the region of the Pacific Northwest, and Japan through contemporary art. Through this entry point, the program aims to engage in a larger exploration of Japanese art in the era of global artistic practice, as well as the continual reconsideration of notions of East and West, center and periphery. He also co-runs THAT YEAR, an independent clothing label and creative studio inspired by the vernacular aesthetics of Tokyo and Seoul, and the echoes of personal memory. THAT YEAR develops products, events, physical and digital media, as well as cultural insight, strategy, and creative direction. Matt attended School of Visual Arts in New York, receiving his BFA in 2011. He was born in New York, and raised between Portland, Oregon and Tokyo, Japan.

**Trigger Warning**This week's episode is very special. Tina is joined by Jehr, a student nurse who has had to overcome a lot in order to get where she is. Tina also opens up for the first time about her traumatic childhood. This portion of the show has been edited down in the interest of time. However, the full conversation is available on our website. Do you believe what you read in horoscopes? In pop culture, we imbue the zodiac signs with certain stereotypical behaviors. Virgos are judgmental, Leos are always starving for attention, Geminis are two-faced. The general gist is that the sun’s position in the sky relative to 12 astrological signs at the time of your birth can tell you all about the kind of person you’ll be. At least, enough to receive the same advice once a week. On this episode of Popaganda, you’ll be hearing from two people whose lives are entangled in astrology. We’ll talk about finding yourself in horoscopes, zodiac pie, and how astrology might work alongside social justice. First, we speak with Claire Comstock-Gay, a.k.a Madame Clairevoyant, who writes weekly horoscopes for The Cut. We actually covered her in Bitch last year! Then we hear from Candace Kita, a community organizer who attends the Portland School of Astrology, who explains what it means to “queer” the study of the zodiac. And she reads Soleil's birth chart! Cool!
This Episode's subject matter is built on a school lock-down/protest as a response to the Parkland Shooting.
