Feliks Banel's guest on this BONUS EPISODE of CASCADE OF HISTORY is Larry Brewer, Supervisor of the Bridge Design Engineering Group for Snohomish County Public Works. The agency is seeking a new home for the historic 1934 bridge that carries the Mountain Loop Highway across the South Fork of the Stillaguamish River just north of the community of Granite Falls. A new and larger bridge is planned for just downstream from the existing bridge, so the 1934 span will no longer be needed. According to a press release, the 1934 bridge is "336 feet long and 28 feet wide. The main span consists of a 160-foot-long riveted steel deck truss, utilizing a three-hinge arched Pratt truss. The truss is 20 feet wide with an overall rise in the arch of 35 feet." Snohomish County, the press release continues, "will donate the truss to any governmental, non-profit or responsible private entity for public or private use. Priority will be given to an interested party that maintain the features of the arched deck truss that give it historic integrity; provide a new location for the structure; assume legal and financial responsibility for the structure." The Tillamook Air Museum is located in a World War II blimp hangar, the roof of which was badly damaged in a windstorm in December 2025. The museum - which is located on the Oregon Coast roughly 90 minutes by car from Portland, Oregon - remains closed. The hangar, which was built by the U.S. Navy in 1942, belongs to the Port of Tillamook Bay. As Rita Welch and Christian Gurling explain in this conversation recorded on Friday, February 27, 2026, addressing the damage and the future of the hangar is a complex and very expensive proposition - and much fundraising will be required. Feliks Banel's guest on this BONUS EPISODE of CASCADE OF HISTORY is Ken Johnsen, founder of the non-profit Yakima Valley Trolleys in Yakima, Washington. Earlier this week, the Yakima City Council voted to withdraw financial support for the trolley portion of a project key to Yakima's future, and key to the future of Yakima Valley Trolleys. Now, the City of Yakima says that Yakima Valley Trolleys has about 18 months to come up with $7 million to support the trolley-related elements of the reconstruction of 6th Avenue in downtown Yakima. Without the tracks on 6th Avenue, Yakima Valley Trolleys' status as the only intact interurban in North America would end - as the route from Yakima to Selah, Washington would be permanently severed. Ken Johnsen is now working to identify the resources required to raise $7 million dollars, and joined CASCADE OF HISTORY on Saturday, February 21, 2026 to provide an update. We dive into why the Boundary Waters is not just an environmental issue, but a sportsmen's issue, an economic issue, and a public lands issue that affects hunters, anglers, outfitters, and rural communities far beyond northeastern Minnesota.Lukas explains the real risks of sulfide copper mining near a pristine watershed, why this type of mining has never been done without pollution, and how overturning current protections could set a dangerous precedent for public lands across the country. We also discuss how these decisions bypass public input, who actually benefits, and who bears the long term cost when wilderness protections are rolled back. Most importantly, this episode is a call to action. The clock is ticking, and everyday hunters and anglers still have a chance to make their voices heard. Feliks Banel's guest on this BONUS EPISODE of CASCADE OF HISTORY is Lloyd Lytle, a leader of the grassroots group working to prevent demolition of the historic Masonic Home of Washington in Des Moines, Washington. Lytle's group is called Citizens for the Protection of Des Moines Historic Resources. They formed a coalition with Des Moines Historical Society and the Washington Trust for Historic Preservation and filed an appeal of the demolition permit issued in August 2025 by the City of Des Moines to property owner Zenith LLC. When the City of Des Moines Hearing Examiner ruled against their appeal in December 2025, the group at first considered giving up. However, as first reported in the B-Town Blog in early January 2026, they decided to appeal the Hearing Examiner's decision to King County Superior Court. The case will be heard in June 2026, but process expenses are mounting this week, and the group is seeking donations in support of their effort to save the Masonic Home. Believing the Bizarre: Paranormal Conspiracies & Myths

Creature Feature: Vol 6 | Paranormal Podcast *This is volume 6...I need you to promise me that you'll ignore all the times I say *5* in this episode* In Creature Feature Volume 6, we dive into four unsettling listener submissions, starting with Cecil from Texas, who was letting his dogs out around 10pm when he noticed something watching him over the fence—at first he thought it was his neighbor's birdhouse, but this canine-shaped thing with a disturbing smile disappeared the next night even though the birdhouse remained. We then hear from Jasmine in North Carolina, who drove 30 minutes outside her college town with her boyfriend Jake to stargaze in a remote area with only 600 people, but their romantic night turned terrifying when they heard bipedal footsteps pacing along the treeline in the darkness, stalking them until Jake shone his flashlight and told Jasmine to calmly walk back to the car—a experience so disturbing that Jake refused to ever speak about it again, leaving us wondering what he actually saw. Julia's story takes us to Washington state in 2017, where an argument with her sister led her to take a late-afternoon hike on the Cascade trails, only to experience complete silence in the forest followed by heavy breathing from something tall and dark that moved with unnatural fluidity and eventually revealed itself as a massive 7-foot-tall creature covered in dark matted hair that hunted her through the woods, forcing her to sprint back to her car. Finally, we explore Zachary's multiple encounters on his rural southwest Ohio property near the Indiana border, where late-night experiences included walking directly into an invisible entity so solid it knocked him to the ground, witnessing a bright neon green mass shoot from the sky into a cornfield, and spotting what appeared to be a silverback gorilla-like creature with long thick hair standing perfectly still against a tree—encounters that left both him and his wife too terrified to go outside at night.

Donnelly recently put two-and-two together and figured out that a demolition and construction project not far from the Seattle waterfront is underway near what may be the location of an old ship buried there in the 19th century. The ship is the bark "Windward," and it was once used as a breakwater at the foot of Madison and Marion Streets. When the waterfront tidal area was filled in during the 1880s, the ship was left in place and buried. Many have written about the ship, including long-ago historians Clarence Bagley and C.T. Ep84 — Getting Hands On With New Hop Varieties

The Pellicle Podcast

Hops have dominated the beer conversation for decades. Modern beer culture has been built on the back of their vast trellises, the majority of which today stand in Yakima, in the Pacific Northwest of the United States. Many North American hops, including Cascade, Centennial and Simcoe, could arguably be called legacy varieties, such has been the length and size of their impact on the beer industry. Even Citra, which was first commercially released in 2007 and is now the most cultivated hop variety in the world, is approaching 20 years of production. Without them, the beer we know and love today would smell and taste very differently indeed. But as much as these hops have shaped beer as we know it, there has been no rest for hop merchants, or indeed the brewers who use their products day in, day out. There is a constant demand for new varieties offering up new flavours and aromas. This demand comes in part from drinkers, and indeed brewers themselves, but largely this constant development of new hop varieties—which can take up to a decade, sometimes more—is driven by the hop industry itself.Think about it—every year sees billions of pounds worth of hops harvested across the hop growing regions of the word, encompassing hundreds, if not thousands of different varieties. Hop merchants are not only seeking that x-factor in terms of flavour, but they're also looking for agronomic viability, and, indeed, strong profit margins. Hops can be notoriously difficult to grow, so while breeders are trying to figure out what's going to make a new variety taste great, they're also looking at other qualities like disease resistance, how much water input a variety needs to survive in a changing climate, and so on.Krush—which until recently was known under its development name: HBC586—is a great example of this. In terms of its flavour and aroma it's a riot of ripe mango, juicy peach and sun-ripened orange, but in terms of its agronomics it also requires less inputs than older varieties, making it more economical and more sustainable to produce. If the sound of this has got your interest piqued, then you're going to love our latest podcast. Recorded live at FyneFest 2025, in this episode Matthew chats to Robbie Harrigan, a UK-based sales representative for Yakima Chief Hops, plus Mark Cotterill of Beak Brewery in Lewes, and Brett Pemberton of Manchester's Pomona Island. Together we chat about some exciting new hop varieties, including Krush, and taste the exciting results alongside a live audience. We're able to produce The Pellicle Podcast directly thanks to our Patreon subscribers, and our sponsors Get ‘Er Brewed. Feliks Banel's guests on this BONUS EPISODE of CASCADE OF HISTORY are Patricia Fels of Friends of Gas Works Park and Barbara Swift of the Gas Works Park Alliance. The City of Seattle Department of Parks & Recreation (SPR) will, this coming Wednesday, January 21, 2026, ask - once again - for permission from the City of Seattle Landmarks Preservation Board (LPB) to make significant changes to the historic towers at Gas Works Park. Gas Works Park is a landmark on the north end of Lake Union, whose design by the late landscape architect Rich Haag is regarded worldwide as an iconic and brilliant re-imagining of a former industrial site. It's also one of Seattle's most beloved public spaces. Because Gas Works Park is a City of Seattle landmark, SPR must seek permission from the LPB to make any changes - in this case, SPR wants remove ladders, walkways and other elements of the iconic towers that SPR deems a safety hazard. SPR appeared previously before the LPB in 2025 to ask permission, and the request was not approved, with LPB members asking for additional information. A staff report issued last week by the City of Seattle - in advance of the January 21, 2026 meeting - recommends that the LPB approve the request. Both Patricia Fels and Barbara Swift disagree with the City of Seattle staff report, and they share their reasons why in this interview. This episode was recorded on Saturday, January 17, 2026. On December 30th, Chief Petitioners plunked down the last pile of signatures on the Secretary of State's desk. It was a slam dunk for the Oregon System. In a record-breaking 40-ish days, a quarter-million Oregon voters lined up in every county to sign the “Stop the Gas Tax” petition and refer Governor Kotek's $4.3 billion transportation tax to the November ballot. These voters participated in the “Oregon System,” a form of direct democracy passed in 1902 and giving voters the right to challenge legislation in a veto referendum. Since then, Oregon voters have repealed 42 laws.Oregon Freedom Coalition's Nick Stark told Cascade there were nearly enough signatures to even qualify for a constitutional referendum. The record-breaking signature drive signaled legislators that Oregon's voters are up for any challenge—especially the legislative session beginning in February. No sooner had Stark spoken, when Governor Kotek called for lawmakers to “redirect, repeal, and rebuild” the transportation bill, admitting that “thousands of Oregonians across the state have made their point.”As designed, the Oregon System earned the Governor's attention. So what's next? The Bill's Chief Petitioners say a full repeal isn't the best answer as it would gut the good parts, re-institute tolling, and halt the audit of ODOT.In any case, the Governor and her supermajority are back where they started one year ago, unable to govern and unable to carry out the state's most basic functions: to maintain roads and bridges—the stuff all of us need and care about. Two things—a lack of imagination in spending solutions and a narrow fixation on collecting more taxes—make up a mindset where nothing can be done unless voters pay more for less—more for gas taxes, more for fees, more for dying transit, and more for fewer roads and fewer lanes for cars. While New York's socialist mayor touts the “warmth of collectivist action” — taxpayers in Oregon were nearly condemned to the cold gulag of blistering tax increases and service decreases. That is, until a quarter-million voters decided to light a fire, ignited by the spark of individual freedom.

At TriMet's December board meeting, director Tyler Frisbee lectured attendees on how 82nd Avenue business owners and motorists should embrace TriMet's takeover of auto lanes for exclusive busways.TriMet refers to these as Business Access Transit or BAT lanes—which is Orwell's doublespeak for the opposite effect—reducing business access for people in cars. Portland Bureau of Transportation's alleged “improvement” of 82nd only turns a street made for cars into an avenue for the minority of pedestrians, bicyclists, and transit riders.82nd is another flagship for how PBOT intends to “improve” more streets -- by taking away auto lanes to be re-striped as “bus-only” lanes. Traffic modeling shows, of course, this will greatly distress peak-hour travel times by 50 percent and divert motorists to I-205.TriMet's 72 bus line will be the only beneficiary of this change. A bus that runs every 12 minutes during peak hours, means BAT lanes will be unused most of the time while motorists eye an empty lane, confined to Los Angeles style gridlock.TriMet and PBOT are moving towards a likely February decision on the BAT lanes -- and many business owners have threatened legal action for loss of access to their shops.Director Frisbee, meanwhile, took 10 minutes to make unsubstantiated assertions, to which Cascade's President, John Charles, has written a response you can read at cascadepolicy.org. Like an evangelist, Tyler Frisbee pleas for Portlanders to repent from their car-centric ways and embrace the narrow vision of PBOT's Transportation System Plan -- whose tenets are known as “Vision Zero:” Stop designing roads around people in cars to make driving more painful, and convert major roads into avenues for walking, bicycling, and public transit. At the February meeting, the TriMet Board should withdraw this idea and end its war on the majority of people in cars.
