Ashland author Max Doty makes his traditional publishing debut with “The House That Eats the Dead,” a horror novel about a home with a sinister appetite.

This interview is with Perry Heistuman and Eli Doty of Hoty Wines. In this interview, the couple discusses their separate careers in hospitality and how they created a wine brand together.Perry talks about always being plant-driven and hospitality-centered. Her father worked in wine distribution all throughout her childhood so she already had a limited view of the wine industry. At 19, Perry worked her first harvest in Italy, learning a lot about winemaking and cellar work. At the age of 26, she decided to go to Oregon State University to study viticulture, a side of the industry she didn't know much about at the time. From that experience, she learned that she enjoyed the winemaking and hospitality side of the industry.Eli discusses his entrance into the industry. Eli also started working in hospitality and restaurants where he grew an interest in wine. He had always had a connection to nature, and wine was a way to celebrate that. He also believes that wine can take you places both physically and mentally. Working in restaurants, Eli got heavily involved in creating wine lists and pairings. Eli has completed his WSET diploma and is looking to advance further as a sommelier through CMS.Later in the interview, the two talk about coming together to create Hoty Wines. The two met in college and started drinking wine together. After bonding over wine throughout their relationship, they came across some fruit that was unspoken for. They took this opportunity to make their own wine with grapes Perry had farmed. They claim that every wine they make is like a college course. Eric Stein, chief investment officer at Voya Investment Management, says that  investors can expect interest rates — particularly on longer-term bonds — will keep rising, but those higher reates "will lead to lower rates because you will see a response on the demand side whether it's through the consumer or through the [capital expenditures] cycle." Stein says that if "demand destruction" doesn't slow the economy too much, recession remains avoidable, particularly in the muted economic cycles that the U.S. has been going through in recent years. In The NAVigator segment,  Bryce Doty, senior portfolio manager at Sit Investment Associates, also says that rates will be coming down, with his estimation being that it happens by the fall because "the worst is over as far as yields going up." Doty says that if oil prices stay below $110 per barrel, it's viewed as inflationary; above that level, "We have a problem, and so does the rest of the world." He says central banks will solve that problem by cutting rates to "save economies from disaster," and likes two-year TIPS, municipal bonds and high-yield corporate bonds to ride out the storm. Plus, Mark Hamrick, senior economic analyst and Washington bureau chief at BankRate.com — who recently launched The Hamrick Brief on Substack to give his take on current financial events — discusses mortgage rates and inflation both reaching recent highs, the historical context of those numbers and how, why and when conditions may ease and change.

He last month led Siena University to the NCAA men's college basketball tournament for the first time since 2010, by way of capturing the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference championship. He was the MAAC Tournament MVP, after having been the first Siena University player in five years to earn First Team All-MAAC honors. He also set a record for the most points scored by a Siena Saints player through their first two seasons. Earlier this month he announced that he is transferring and will go play at Syracuse University. Before all that he had a record-setting high school career and even starred on the Nike EYBL circuit for the Albany City Rocks.

Generic medicines account for the vast majority of prescriptions in the U.S., yet much of their underlying supply chain remains heavily dependent on foreign-sourced active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs). At the same time, advanced manufacturing approaches like continuous flow are gaining traction as a way to improve efficiency, safety, and cost competitiveness in a traditionally low-margin market. In this episode of Off Script, we spoke with Brian Doty, vice president of R&D and programs at the API Innovation Center (APIIC), about the structural challenges facing generic drug manufacturing and the role advanced technologies could play in addressing them. The conversation explores why API supply is often the cause of downstream drug shortages, the technical and economic limitations of traditional batch processing, and how continuous manufacturing can reduce process steps, improve control, and enable safer production. Doty also discusses the practical barriers to adoption as well as the growing role of FDA engagement programs and policy incentives in accelerating change.
