Portland, Maine is another of America's most overlooked beer scenes. Occasionally mistaken for the other beer powerhouse of the same name, the East Coast Portland plays host to a number of quintessential American craft breweries and an easily accessible beer scene that is perfect for a day trip or a longer stay. And today we have two great local guests to guide us on our journey. Carla Jean Lauter is a freelance beer writer based just outside of Portland. She has written columns and articles for a number of publications and her current gig is with local Beer & Weed Magazine. Carla is smart, funny, and plugged into Portland and the Maine beer scene. She's opinionated and engaging and when she talks, folks in the know listen. Joining Carla today is Benjamin Moore. A freelance writer and photographer in Maine, Ben is best known as the activebeergeek on Instagram. His photos are striking and he captures the spirit of the beer scene in the state through his lens. We're excited to jump into an exploration of the history and present day treasures of the Portland, Maine Beer scene on this episode of Beer Travelers. My interview in ep 16 with Maine beer writer Carla Jean Lauter was a treat. She's been active and effective at informing people about Maine beer, currently as the "Tap Lines" columnist for the Portland Press Herald. As @beerbabe she promotes diversity in beer. We had a chance to talk about her writing evolution and the current state of Maine beer.

Welcome back to the GBH Collective, a special series of interviews where we have the chance to dive a little deeper with Good Beer Hunting contributors and friends on topics of writing, beer and the stories you read and hear from GBH. In this episode, we’re joined by a name you may be familiar with if you’re a beer fan, especially if you’re on Twitter, and very much so if you live in New England. For years, Carla Jean Lauter has shared stories from Maine on her blog, beerbabe.com, and more recently through the weekly Tap Lines column in Maine Today. She’s been an outspoken voice on a variety of issues in beer, from pushing breweries to simply publish their hours of operation on their website, to discussions of inclusion and diversity. Carla and I have known each other for some time, and in addition to interactions on social media, shared emails, acting as a voice in stories, and even acting as a tour guide to proper drinking in Portland, Maine, I got to see her again this summer when we were both in Virginia as part of the annual Beer Bloggers and Writers Conference. Amongst presentations, we sat down for a bit to talk about what it means to cover beer, and more specifically, what it’s like to do so in her home state. Portland, let alone Maine, already has a great reputation among beer enthusiasts, but I hope that hearing Carla talk about it all gives you new or renewed interest in exploring what the state says in its slogan is “the way life should be” … just with a little more beer along the way.
According to the Brewers Association (https://www.brewersassociation.org/statistics/number-of-breweries/), in 1994, there were 537 brewpubs, microbreweries, and regional craft brewers in the U.S. In 2017, that number had risen to 6,266. Coast to coast, there's been an explosion in craft brewing, with brewers producing a delightful diversity of types of beer. But demographic diversity has been a different story. It's a story still being written, but it's still a different story. In this episode of Tatter, I talk with J. Nikol Jackson-Beckham (https://www.brewersassociation.org/press-releases/j-nikol-jackson-beckham-named-first-diversity-ambassador-at-the-brewers-association/), who has written about beer and was recently named the new Diversity Ambassador for the Brewers Association, and I also talk with Carla Jean Lauter (http://www.thebeerbabe.com/), a Maine-based beer writer who has written under the name "The Beer Babe." We discuss the status of women and people of color in the craft beer industry. I learned a lot from our conversation, including about the Pink Boots Society (https://www.pinkbootssociety.org/). Check out this episode. (Music in this episode is by Slavic Soul Party! (http://slavicsoulparty.com/), used by permission.) Also, if you listen via iTunes, please post a review. I value feedback immensely--not as much as I value craft beer, but still immensely. Special Guests: Carla Jean Lauter and J. Nikol Jackson-Beckham.
Inclusivity in Your Branding & Market with Carla Jean Lauter Find Carla: Website: thebeerbabe.com // Twitter: @beerbabe Beer doesn’t see race, gender, sexual orientation or class. When it comes to branding and marketing, why not take an extra effort to make sure you are being inclusive and reaching a larger audience in a positive way. Inclusivity doesn’t stop at how your customer perceives your packaging and visual branding, but it also is the environment in your brewery and your employee culture. Customers are seeking genuine and authentic brands that represent real and positive values. They want to connect with and believe in the the breweries they visit and the beer they drink. Women are an increasing market to craft beer consumption, but also are taking more roles in the beer industry. Craft beer took an opportunity to move away from the sex sells marketing and branding strategies of the older big beer brands and provide products that are unique and can stand out based on quality of the liquid. We’re going to cover how inclusivity can benefit not only your brand, but the craft beer industry as a whole. With so many breweries opening their doors, it’s important that we’re looking forward and trying to reach and connect with larger audiences and communities. Carla Jean Lauter has been passionate about this topic and has been very active online, engaging other breweries and fans. Carla joins us today to talk inclusivity in the beer market, on this episode of Branding Brews.
Welcome to another episode of The Fervent Few podcast. Every few weeks we present you with this bonus episode of the GBH podcast where we chat with members of our subscriber community. The Fervent Few subscribe to GBH like a magazine making a monthly contribution via Patreon. Members join us in a forum to talk about a wide range of topics that doesn’t just stop at beer. And every week we pick one of these topics and present the community’s answers to readers in the form of an article posted to Good Beer Hunting. You can find out more information by visiting patreon.com/goodbeerhunting On this episode we talk to Tyler Jackson of Chicago’s Present Tense Fine Ales a brewery that wants to serve beer exclusively on cask. Then we talk to Carla Jean Lauter, a prolific beer writer and tweeter, about a successful battle against a brewery that opened with a very terribly named beer. But first Michael and I will talk about Founder’s Harvest Ale and the way a very minor question can become very meaningful content for GBH. Finally, we start to think about the best beers we had in 2017.
We get to sit down with the one and only Carla Jean Lauter, otherwise known as The Beer Babe! We just joined the legions of fans who follow her writings, and we crack open some beers over the classical pieces of Looney Tunes and Merry Melodies, to talk about her picks of 2015, what to look for in 2016, and why stealing tasting glasses makes you a dingus! Listen now!
