The Beer Culture Center was founded by Liz Garabay, a long-time museum professional. When she sketched it out in 2013 she wanted it to be a place that would look at history and society through the lens of drinking. The idea came to life and has now presented hundreds exhibits and events around the country. It's important and necessary work, one everyone in the industry should be supporting. The center also hosts the annual Beer Culture Summit, a multi-day, multi-disciplinary experience that tells the story of beer, its people, its history, and its importance. As the center expands, it recently announced its first Beer History Studies Fellow, Onteya Zachary. She will share insight into her research and more. Learn how Church Street makes every beer "crushable," from lagers and sours to barrel-aged Belgians and THC hop water.Church Street Brewing Company Head Brewer Sean Gregor and Director of Pints & Publicity Amanda Steinbraker discuss how German brewing traditions, sustainability, and creativity come together in their lagers, sours, barrel-aged Belgians, and even THC hop water. They begin by sharing how Sean's father fell in love with German beer styles like Munich Helles, why the brewery is named Church Street even though it isn't located on one, and the story behind their stained-glass beer labels. Sean then tells his personal journey from college swimmer to becoming the youngest head brewer in the United States, his early work at Bircus Brewing in Kentucky, and the lessons he brought home to Church Street. He also explains how he improvised with custom brewing equipment, and how the brewery recycles spent grain as cattle feed. After the beer break, Sean dives into the science of decoction mashing and why it brings more malt character compared to single infusion. The team tastes through Heavenly Helles, brewed with German ingredients to replicate the Munich water table, and talk about why lagers are making a comeback. They sample Itascafest Märzen and explain the difference between Märzen and Festbier, discuss why Oktoberfests often run out before October, and move on to the Blueberry Vanilla Sour, which uses real fruit purée and natural vanilla. Next is Righteous Red Ale, a hybrid of Irish Red and American Red styles that balances English malt richness with American hop brightness.Later, Sean explains how he sources hops from the UK, New Zealand, and local farms, and Amanda shares how a mislabeled hop variety once led to a happy brewing accident. They also introduce listeners to the history of Zoigl beers, their collaboration brew honoring the late Mark Naski, and the story behind their Pigeon Row THC hop water, a sugar-free, calorie-free alternative that some say is perfect for diabetics. Amanda shares a brilliant trick for turning a can into THC ice cubes for low-dose drinking. Sean and Amanda also talk about their relationship with Four Roses for bourbon barrels, how Church Street keeps even high-ABV beers crushable, and why water chemistry is so important to brewing clean lagers. Plus: learn about the brewery's two taproom experiences, The Steeple and Barley House, and why their Bavarian pretzel with house queso is a must-try. About Church Street Brewing Company: Serving up award-winning craft beer that's true to style, rooted in history, and brewed with passion in a one-of-a-kind decoction brewhouse in Itasca, IL. In Park City, Utah, Offset Bier is doing big things. In a state with laws that can make it tough to be a brewer, Conor Brown, the brewery founder, is doing what he can to bring fresh flavorful beer to the people all while creating a welcoming community space. He's currently working to build out the brewery footprint, bringing in new equipment and adding more space, and at this time of year he finds the time to make frequent trips to Idaho where he loads up on fresh hops to bring back to the brewery for quick turnaround brew days. It's the kind of commitment that bodes well for the future of craft beer. For more Drink Beer, Think Beer check out All About Beer.SponsorsDogfish Head Craft BreweryCalling all hop heads! Courtney experienced her first All Pints North and thought that the Minnesota Craft Brewers Guild did a fabulous job planning a fantastic craft beer festival in Duluth. We chat about our brewery stops at Three-Twenty Brewing, Bent Paddle Brewing, Ursa Minor Brewing, Hoops Brewing, and The Cedar Lounge. We packed in a lot over that weekend and are excited to rehash it for you.If you liked the show and want to support the A One Pint Stand, consider joining our Patreon. Nestled in the heart of the Shenandaoh Valley, the State Arboretum at Blandy Experimental Farm is preparing to celebrate a unique and flavorful piece of the region's natural heritage: the pawpaw. In this episode of "The Valley Today," host Janet Michael sat down with Melanie Mullinax, Communications and Events Manager at Blandy, and Jack Monsted, Assistant Curator of the Native Plant Trail, to discuss the upcoming "Pawpaws and Pints" event—a festival that promises to blend education, community, and a taste of something truly special. The pawpaw, described as America's largest native fruit, has a storied history at Blandy. First planted in the 1920s after a nationwide contest to find the tastiest pawpaw, these trees have quietly thrived on the property for nearly a century. As Jack explains, the fruit's custardy texture and tropical flavor—somewhere between banana and mango—have made it a hidden gem for those lucky enough to discover it growing wild along creeks and forest trails. This year's "Pawpaws and Pints" event, set for September 13th, invites visitors to explore the newly enhanced pawpaw trail, sample the fruit at peak ripeness, and even taste a special pawpaw beer crafted by Winchester Brew Works. The event is more than just a tasting; it's an immersive experience featuring interpretive walks, educational stations, and the chance to purchase pawpaw seedlings to start your own patch at home. With only 120 tickets available, the organizers encourage early registration to ensure a spot at this once-a-season celebration. Melanie emphasizes that every event at Blandy is designed to educate and inspire, and "Pawpaws and Pints" is no exception. Proceeds from the event will support further enhancements to the trail, including new signage and improved accessibility, ensuring that future generations can continue to learn about and enjoy this remarkable native fruit. Family-friendly and community-focused, the festival offers something for everyone—from nature lovers and home gardeners to craft beer enthusiasts and curious newcomers. As the pawpaw enjoys a well-deserved moment in the spotlight, Blandy Experimental Farm stands ready to share its story, its flavors, and its enduring connection to the land. For more information or to purchase tickets, visit blandy.virginia.edu. Don't miss your chance to taste, learn, and celebrate at one of Virginia's most unique autumn events.
