We're not quite in the dead of winter, but it feels like it – at least from the home office – so I wanted to think about warmer weather, growth, life, and green. So I'm excited to have Darren Gamache of Virgil Gamache Farms in Washington's Yakima Valley here on the show. We talk about 2025 hops, what 2026 might bring, and the farm's hop water – which could be a good fit for your drinking even if you're not doing Dry January. A round up of seasonal offerings from Farming Today. The charity Farms for City Children turns 50 this year. Set up by writer Michael Morpurgo and his wife in 1976, the charity works to connect children with farming and the countryside. Fiona Clampin dons her wellies and joins the Morpurgos at their farm in Devon.Farming life is full of traditions, and we hear from Rathfriland Livestock Market in County Down about one of these: the luck penny. Farmers selling their animals hand money back to the buyer, to seal the deal. It's a way of wishing the customer success with the stock and building up a trustworthy business relationship. Kathleen Carragher visits Rathfriland to find out whether it's still practised today.Tradition also abounds at one brewery in Oxfordshire, which still uses heavy horses to deliver barrels of beer to local pubs. Vernon Harwood meets three of the shire horses delivering horse-powered pints.Work is being carried out in orchards to DNA fingerprint cider apple trees to identify varieties whose names died with the people who created them, or were never named. The aim: to secure the future of forgotten cider apple varieties. Sarah Swadling speaks to Keith Edwards, Professor of Crop Genetics at Bristol University and Devon cider-maker Barny Butterfield who have been working on the project.Historians in Cumbria are publishing extracts from the diary of an 18th century yeoman farmer. The writings of Isaac Fletcher, who farmed at Mosser near Cockermouth, are providing a window into rural life 250 years ago. Helen Millican has been for a tour of what would have been Isaac's farm. Presented by Charlotte Smith and produced by Jo Peacey. A BBC Audio Bristol production.
This episode drops on the last day of 2025 so I've invited my colleague and All About Beer co-owner Andy Crouch on to talk about the year that was for our media company and what we have planned for the year ahead. Journalism, like the beer industry, is in a difficult spot. We know you rely on good news and information just like you do a quality pint. Supporting your local brewery is important, so is supporting the sites and shows you believe in and trust. From podcasts to articles to events, this was an eventful year for All About Beer. We were honored by both the British Guild of Beer Writers and the North American Guild of Beer Writers. And were able to pay writers, editors, photographers, and illustrators for great original work. AllAboutBeer.com/support is where you can check out ways to keep us rolling through 2026 and beyond. We know times are tough for a lot of people, so I appreciate your willingness to help. The editors use an antique slur (sadly surging back to popularity) to describe a contributor's mentally handicapped sister, but let's not focus on that when the piece -- especially the photos it's built around -- is thoughtful and sensitive. Then, we can move on to why and how to dump a guy; no, taking you to the library isn't one of the reasons, though it does come up. Mike reports from the McDonald's training institute Hamburger University, where the sight of students and instructors actually caring about their careers in customer service alarms his apathetic Gen-X sensibilities. On The Road goes to Cleveland; female staffers' brothers confess the ways they tortured them as kids; a teen mother glosses over a LOT of what Happened To her; and more! When Brian Grossman started working for the brewery his father co-founded he expected to be making beer right away. Instead he was put to work scrubbing out fermenters. Over the years at Sierra Nevada Brewing Co. he has held a number of jobs in both the original Chico, California location and in the Mills River, North Carolina brewery. Today he goes by chief brewer and is increasingly becoming the public face of the venerable beer brand that just celebrated its 45th anniversary. Earlier today, shortly before the North Carolina brewery opened its doors to the public for pours of Celly Drippins, he sat down for a conversation about generations, responsibility, brewing and hops.
