Der Glarner Urs Freuler, 10-facher Weltmeister auf der Bahn und Sieger von 15 Giro-d'Italia-Etappen, ist die Hölle des Nordens in den 80er Jahren neun Mal gefahren – und kennt die Tücken des Kurses wie kaum ein anderer Profi.  Intensive Strecken-Recons waren zu Freulers Zeit wederüblich noch möglich.
