From screw-up recruit to revered drill instructor, First Sergeant John Crouch takes us deep into the crucible of Marine Corps transformation. In this gripping episode, Crouch recalls his early days at bootcamp, his infamous misstep during the Laws of Land Warfare class, and the brutal but formative experience of Drill Instructor School at Parris Island. He shares harrowing tales of PT punishment, spit-shined leadership, and the unwavering standards that mold raw recruits into Marines. Whether he's talking about the origin of “YUT!” or the moment he lost all attraction to a stunning Staff Sergeant mid-drip, Crouch delivers humor, humility, and hard-earned wisdom. You'll hear how tradition, stress, and shared adversity forge the kind of leaders America needs. This one's got everything: embarrassment, endurance, and the emotional gravity that only the Corps can provide. Don't miss this raw, hilarious, and unforgettable ride through the making of a DI.
Harvard physics Professor Eric Mazur developed Peer Instruction in the early 90s, after noticing that many of his students weren't deeply understanding concepts despite performing well on traditional exams. With a B3 organ, a prophetic imagination, and a heart broken wide open by grace, gospel music legend Andraé Crouch (1942–2015) left an indelible mark on modern Christian worship music. In this episode, Stephen Newby and Robert Darden offer a sweeping yet intimate exploration of his life, spiritual vision, and genre-defining genius. Together with Mark Labberton, they discuss their new biography, Soon and Very Soon: The Transformative Music and Ministry of Andraé Crouch. Through laughter, lament, and lyrical memory, Newby and Darden—both scholars at Baylor University and coauthors of the first serious biography of Crouch—share stories of discovering his music, the theological and cultural forces that shaped it, and why his legacy matters now more than ever. They offer insights into modern musical history, spiritual reflection, and cultural analysis, inviting us into the soul of a man who helped bring modern gospel into being. Episode Highlights “Musical genius is where observation, curiosity, imagination, and humility are baked in the oven.” “He was always tracking what was going on in the room and in his heart. He understood the cues, clues, and codes of what God was doing.” “Andre felt it was important that the music was just as inspired as the lyrics. It was total praise.” “'Soon and Very Soon' is an ancient future song—we have to keep singing it, especially now.” “Andraé burned out a lot of musicians—but all of them adore him to this day.” Helpful Links and Resources Soon and Very Soon: The Transformative Music and Ministry of Andraé Crouch by Stephen Newby and Robert Darden (Penn State University Press) Black Gospel Music Preservation Project (Baylor University) “Jesus is the Answer,” by Andraé Crouch “Through It All,” by Andraé Crouch “Soon and Very Soon” **by Andraé Crouch People Get Ready!: A New History of Black Gospel Music by Robert Darden About Stephen Newby Stephen Michael Newby is a composer, conductor, and scholar. Pritchard III Chair in Black Worship and Music at Baylor University Guest Robert Darden is emeritus professor of journalism at Baylor and founder of the Black Gospel Music Preservation Project Labberton celebrates the book's narrative, musical, and sociocultural scope Crouch grew up in a Pentecostal context that encouraged musical exploration and spiritual improvisation Gospel rooted in KoGIC (Church of God in Christ) tradition, blending Beale Street sounds with evangelical fervor Darden describes Crouch's early music as “jazz, pop... but wait, it is gospel—they're singing about Jesus” Crouch and his sister Sandra composed “Jesus Is the Answer,” considered the first modern praise and worship song The book includes more than 200 interviews from gospel musicians, friends, and collaborators Crouch read the room and followed the Spirit—every performance was improvisational, responsive, alive “Through It All” composed after the heartbreak of a failed relationship; the grief birthed one of his most lasting songs Gospel music as lament and praise: “We hear the pain, we hear the resolve, we hear the lament turning to praise” Crouch's “Take Me Back” begins with Billy Preston on B3 organ—“He hasn't forgotten the church,” says Newby Earth, Wind & Fire, Motown, and classical influences shaped Crouch's orchestration and arrangements Darden: “He wanted the music to sound as good as the words. It was obsessive—but it was for God.” Andre's collaboration with producer/drummer Bill Maxwell led to a string of gospel albums with unmatched quality “We are going to see the King”: the timeless hope of “Soon and Very Soon” rooted in the Black spiritual tradition Crouch's music was not only groundbreaking—it was pastoral, prophetic, and profoundly personal Evangelistic to his dying breath, Crouch witnessed to hospital staff and janitors alike The book's subtitle “Transformative Music and Ministry” is more than academic—it's biographical theology Newby and Darden's friendship mirrors Crouch and Maxwell's cross-cultural collaboration Soon and Very Soon offers readers a chance to read with phone in hand—listening and learning simultaneously “Jesus is the answer” remains a musical and theological call across generations Production Credits Conversing is produced and distributed in partnership with Comment magazine and Fuller Seminary.

Despite entering college as a pre-med major, Corey Layne Crouch '13 found her calling in the classroom after working as a teacher's aide for a kindergarten class. Switching majors, she set out on a path to transform the education system from within. Corey's entrepreneurial mindset in her work as a high school English teacher and school principal led her to Rice's Professional MBA program. Now, she's the chief program officer for AI for Education — an organization providing AI literacy training to educators and championing responsible use of AI in the education ecosystem. In this episode, Corey joins host Maya Pomroy '22 to chat about her pivots from pre-med to English to her current role as an educational tech executive — as well as her time at Rice Business, the importance of supporting AI literacy and the innovative ways she's influenced the education system. Episode Guide:00:00 Introduction to Corey Layne Crouch02:15 From Pre-Med to Kindergarten Teacher05:21 Teach for America and Moving to Houston08:23 Becoming a Principal and Pursuing an MBA17:04 Transition to EdTech and AI in Education25:07 Challenges and Misconceptions of AI in Schools30:26 Future of Education with AI38:22 Conclusion and Final ThoughtsOwl Have You Know is a production of Rice Business and is produced by University FM.Episode Quotes:On building AI literacy through tool-agnostic workshops[30:26] Maya Pomroy: So, tell me some of the work that you do — because AI for Education is really tackling one of the, I mean, this is one of the biggest shifts in modern learning.[31:41] Corey Layne Crouch: So we provide workshops and thing that we do, as well as that we're tool agnostic. We do have opinions about tools and where, you know, what's safe and what's fit for purpose, and what we think isn't quite yet, and how to integrate it in that way. 'Cause the technology is going to continue to evolve, but we really believe a foundation of which is rooted in durable skills, right, of critical thinking, and evaluation and understanding the best tool for a job and how to be community oriented. That is the work that we do. And, of course, we teach people how to use the tools and drive towards outcomes with them while we're laying that foundation as well. How Houston's education scene inspired Corey's bold, equitable innovation07:16: Houston is such a great city, as you know, to be a young professional in and, and to start your career, let alone having the opportunity to be a part of the thriving, innovative education landscape there. I really think that it helped me think much bigger about what it meant to be an education and what was possible with innovation, and really moving the needle toward equity and supporting communities that historically, you know, weren't being serviced in the way that they deserved. Why entrepreneurship skills is essential for an AI-driven world32:46: I really believe that students need entrepreneurial skills, and not necessarily because every student is going to go off and start their own business per se, but at the root of it, entrepreneurial skills is about, you know, understanding what you're trying to drive to, or what's the job to be done, seeing what's the diagnosis, what are the challenges, or, you know, opportunities to do better, and then understanding the resources that you have, and moving forward with strategy, as if it's a puzzle piece and, you know, it's strategy, but it's also about just seeing that opportunity and having the confidence and the belief in your own critical thinking, your own resourcefulness, and your ability to collaborate and build relationship with others in order to solve a problem or drive something forward.Show Links: TranscriptGuest Profiles:Corey Layne Crouch | AI for EducationCorey on LinkedIn

On this week's episode of The Therapy Crouch, it's party pandemonium and parenting chaos as Abbey and Peter open up about birthday bashes, novelty socks in bed, and the true cost of parenting sanity. Abbey takes us through her over-the-top party planning for the kids, while Pete tries to keep up with the chaos… The pair get candid about exhausting sleep routines, the madness of gender reveals and that one time a novelty sock nearly derailed bedroom romance.Listener dilemmas hit new highs (and lows) as they debate: is taking notes during p*rn too much? What do you do when your partner won't take off Homer Simpson socks in bed? And does dating someone “hot and crazy” really end in disaster?Plus what would happen if they swapped lives for a week. Spoiler: Abbey doesn't think Pete would survive. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
