Mild is one of the oldest continuous beer styles in the English speaking world, it was the working class pint, the beer that fueled industrial England, pulled from cask and corner pubs, consumed in volume by people who needed something honest, drinkable and affordable at the end of a long shift. At its peak in the early 20th century, mild accounted for the majority of beer sold in Britain. It wasn't a specialty, it wasn't a conversation piece, it was just beer and then almost disappeared entirely post World War II. By the 1980s mild had been reduced to a footnote. CAMRA waged a decades long campaign just to keep it on life support. So why are we here on a stage or in the grass at Little Beer festival in 2026 treating it like it matters?  Because, the market is quietly telling us something. We're in a moment defined by low and no alcohol growth, a consumer exhaustion with extreme beers, and real hunger for what you can call intentionally simple beers that reward attention rather than demand tolerance.  Mild, a style built on nuance at low ABV, is almost perfectly positioned for this cultural moment. A note from Jeff Alworth: "I am very excited to announce the launch of a new podcast: “One Iconic Beer.” The first episode will go live on Monday, and we're busy putting together the second episode, which will follow in a month. Anyone familiar with my “Making of a Classic” series on this blog will gather the main idea. We'll be looking at a single beer and unpacking why it has become an icon through its history, accomplishment, cultural impact, and influence. The idea for the podcast came from All About Beer editor John Holl and, full disclosure, my friend. AAB will host the podcast and John has agreed to following me down a slightly more ambitious path than he might have bargained for. We're going to interview a couple people to tell these stories; someone from the brewery who can give a personal account of the beer and describe how it's made, and someone who can reflect on the broader story, providing historical background and the reason for the beer's stature. I don't know that he planned on an involved editing process when he pitched the idea, but he was game to give it a shot. When Brian Grossman started working for the brewery his father co-founded he expected to be making beer right away. Instead he was put to work scrubbing out fermenters. Over the years at Sierra Nevada Brewing Co. he has held a number of jobs in both the original Chico, California location and in the Mills River, North Carolina brewery. The Beer Culture Center was founded by Liz Garabay, a long-time museum professional.  When she sketched  it out in 2013 she wanted it to be a place that would look at history and society through the lens of drinking. The idea came to life and has now presented hundreds exhibits and events around the country. It's important and necessary work, one everyone in the industry should be supporting.  The center also hosts the annual Beer Culture Summit, a multi-day, multi-disciplinary experience that tells the story of beer, its people, its history, and its importance.  As the center expands, it recently announced its first Beer History Studies Fellow, Onteya Zachary. In a state with laws that can make it tough to be a brewer, Conor Brown, the brewery founder, is doing what he can to bring fresh flavorful beer to the people all while creating a welcoming community space.  He's currently working to build out the brewery footprint, bringing in new equipment and adding more space, and at this time of year he finds the time to make frequent trips to Idaho where he loads up on fresh hops to bring back to the brewery for quick turnaround brew days.
