One Iconic Beer: Bass Ale

On this episode, you'll hear the remarkable story of Bass Pale Ale. This story begins at the dawn of the industrial age, and charts Bass's rise as one of the first global brewing brands. Over the course of two centuries, its pale ales evolved to meet the times, and today we know Bass as one of Britain's classic cask ales—a beer enjoying a current renaissance among the country's pubs. In many ways, in telling the story of Bass, we're recounting the history of brewing in Britain over the past two centuries: its technological and industrial rise, the collapse that befell the giants over the past generation, and, perhaps, an encouraging revival. You'll hear from Harry White, who started at Bass in the research and development department in 1977. He would become Director of Quality Assurance in 1989, and stayed with the company until 2007. Today he is the chairman of the National Brewery Heritage Trust in Burton Upon Trent. You'll also hear from Pete Brown, one of the most celebrated beer writers in the world and the author of over a dozen books, including his most recent, Tasting Notes – The Art and Science of Pairing Beer and Music. It's an amazing brewery and an amazing story, all befitting one of the world's most iconic beers.Visit AllAboutBeer.com for more podcasts, to read original articles, and to get info on upcoming events.Click here to support independent journalism covering the beer industry. This episode is sponsored by:RahrBSGThis episode of the One Iconic Beer podcast is supported by RahrBSG – trusted supplier to brewers, distillers, and beverage makers across North America.  From the barley field to your brewhouse, we're proud to support the people behind great beer with the ingredients, expertise, and service they depend on.  Whether you're brewing the next great American Double IPA or crafting an award-winning continental lager, RahrbSG provides the industry's finest quality, selection, and support. This is a somber episode as we celebrate the life of Alan Sprints, the founder of Hair of the Dog brewery who died last weekend at age 66. The cause was bladder cancer. His family posted the following obituary: Alan was born on September 7, 1959, in Culver City, California, to the late Lila Entis and Martin Sprints. In 1988, following his passion for the culinary arts, Alan relocated to Portland, Oregon, to attend the Western Culinary Institute. After honing his craft for several years in the food and beverage industry, Alan took a bold leap in 1993 by founding the Hair of the Dog Brewing Company. Over the next three decades, he built a legendary business celebrated by beer enthusiasts worldwide. Alan was a true pioneer in the American craft brewing movement, introducing an old-world approach to beer making and creating uniquely complex, barrel-aged, and high-gravity beers that challenged and redefined the industry.Beyond the brewery, Alan was a man of diverse talents and boundless curiosity. He was an avid gardener, a skilled stained-glass artist, a ceramicist, and a tinkerer extraordinaire who found joy in creating things with his hands and nurturing the world around him.Alan's greatest devotion was to his family. He is survived by his beloved wife of 36 years, Eliana Temkin, and their three sons, Elijah, Isaac, and Gabriel Sprints. He also leaves behind his sister, Wendy Sprints (Dan Kaempff); sister-in-law, Dina Temkin (Dominic Green); in-laws Dvora Temkin and Howard Temkin, aunt and uncle, Judie and Michael Rickus; step-mother, Madeline Sprints as well as a close-knit circle of nieces, cousins, extended family, and lifelong friends. The family will hold a private burial service, with a public celebration of life to be planned in the near future. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Alan's memory to New Avenues for Youth, an organization close to his heart. To remember Alan, host John Holl is joined by Lisa Morrison, the publican of Belmont Station and Jeff Alworth, the writer, author, and host of All About Beer's One Iconic Beer podcast. Visit AllAboutBeer.com for more podcasts, to read original articles, and to get info on upcoming events.Click here to support independent journalism covering the beer industry. This Episode is Sponsored by:All About BeerAt All About Beer, we're honored to share the stories that define the beer community, and we couldn't do it without the generous support of our underwriting sponsors. Celebrating the English Mild

Drink Beer, Think Beer With John Holl

Mild is one of the oldest continuous beer styles in the English speaking world, it was the working class pint, the beer that fueled industrial England, pulled from cask and corner pubs, consumed in volume by people who needed something honest, drinkable and affordable at the end of a long shift. At its peak in the early 20th century, mild accounted for the majority of beer sold in Britain. It wasn't a specialty, it wasn't a conversation piece, it was just beer and then almost disappeared entirely post World War II. By the 1980s mild had been reduced to a footnote. CAMRA waged a decades long campaign just to keep it on life support. So why are we here on a stage or in the grass at Little Beer festival in 2026 treating it like it matters?  Because, the market is quietly telling us something. We're in a moment defined by low and no alcohol growth, a consumer exhaustion with extreme beers, and real hunger for what you can call intentionally simple beers that reward attention rather than demand tolerance.  Mild, a style built on nuance at low ABV, is almost perfectly positioned for this cultural moment. Whether the industry is ready to actually embrace that is another question, and that's what we're here to explore today. This episode is hosted by Blake Tyres of Creature Comforts Brewing Co. He is joined by some of the most thoughtful professionals driving success in this space right now. "Adjunct" Doesn't Mean "Cheap" When it Comes to Beer

There was a time when "adjunct" meant "cheap beer." One of America's largest breweries even paid millions of dollars to run television commercials during the Super Bowl accusing another of America's largest breweries of using worse adjuncts than they themselves used.Oh, what a world! But for craft breweries, an ingredient is an ingredient. What if adjuncts added flavor?  What if adjuncts actually cost more than malted barley?  What if adjuncts could tell a story of time and place?Corn and rice aren't cheap anymore.  They have a history.  They tell a story.  And good breweries know how to use ingredients to tell the story of great beer. Let's talk about hop sensory. Last week the craft brewers conference was held in Philadelphia and brewers from around the world worked to better understand processes, ingredients, and recipe development. One thing brewers and therefore drinkers can always benefit from is hop sensory. There's no argument that hops bring great depth of flavor and aroma to beer, but aside from some top notes that many of us are able to pick out, there's not always a lot of extra layers discussed. To dive into this deeper, Master Cicerone Max Finnance has a conversation with Jeff Dailey of John I. Welcome to This Week in Rauchbier for April 1, 2026. Our Rauchbier spotlight is on the Pacific Northwest where eight breweries have come together to release Smoke Break, a collaborative Rauch Märzen built around a simple idea: Rauchbier is great, and more people should be drinking it."The project brings together Cloudburst Brewing, Obelisk Beer Co, Varietal Beer Company, Ladd & Lass Brewing, Ravenna Brewing Company, Urban Family Brewing Co., Human People Beer, and Single Hill Brewing (who hosted the collaboration.) It is a larger-than-usual collaboration centered on a style that does not often get this kind of spotlight," reads a press release. "Smoke Break is a mid strength Rauch Märzen brewed with beechwood-smoked barley, and a touch of oak-smoked wheat. The result is a malt-forward lager with notes of caramel and cocoa, backed by a firm but clean smoky finish that lingers without overwhelming."Then Bart Watson the President and CEO of the Brewers Association joins us to share the latest growth and success of Rauchbier in the marketplace. Finally, we hear from Brian Shirley at Time & Materials Beer talks about his cask rauchbier. Enjoy these audio smoky delights. For more Drink Beer, Think Beer check out All About Beer.Host: John HollGuests: Bart Watson, Brian Shirley, Andrew PytelTags: beer, craft beer, rauchbier, smoke, April Fool's DayMusic for this episode:NewsSting by Kevin MacLeodLink: https://incompetech.filmmusic.io/song/4124-newsstingLicense: http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/

The eisbock story is a fun lore of beer myth, a hapless brewery employee left a barrel of doppelbock outside during a snowstorm in Germany and some of the beer froze, concentrating flavor and thus creating a whole new beer style. While the roots of this story may not wholly be true, it's a fun addition to a beer style made by distillation processes at its most base level. These beers are rare in the United States as you need special licenses to make them but in Europe, the rules are a bit different and in some European countries, these beers, not just eisbocks, have taken on a life of their own. And this is before we start talking about other drinks like the amazing ice cider made by freeze distillation. How does the freezing process work and what changes does it make to these drinks? This episode drops on the last day of 2025 so I've invited my colleague and All About Beer  co-owner Andy Crouch on to talk about the year that was for our media company and what we have planned for the year ahead.  Journalism, like the beer industry, is in a difficult spot. We know you rely on good news and information just like you do a quality pint. Supporting your local brewery is important, so is supporting the sites and shows you believe in and trust.  From podcasts to articles to events, this was an eventful year for All About Beer. We were honored by both the British Guild of Beer Writers and the North American Guild of Beer Writers. And were able to pay writers, editors, photographers, and illustrators for great original work. AllAboutBeer.com/support is where you can check out ways to keep us rolling through 2026 and beyond. We know times are tough for a lot of people, so I appreciate your willingness to help. For more Drink Beer, Think Beer check out All About Beer.SponsorsDogfish Head Craft BreweryCalling all hop heads!
