It's one of the most anticipated episodes of the year—our annual peek behind the scenes of the Craft Beer & Brewing Magazine™ Best in Beer issue, as editorial director Jamie Bogner and executive editor Joe Stange share perspectives on the beers we've named as our best 20 of 2025 (https://beerandbrewing.com/the-best-20-beers-in-2025)—plus, they reveal the results of the annual Readers' Choice poll. Throughout the year, we taste thousands of beers submitted to the magazine for review; our blind-review panel narrows them down further, finding top scorers in various styles for each issue of the magazine; and finally, we convene for a final round of blind tasting to narrow it down to 20 standouts of great character and quality—beers that inevitably represent this moment in beer. In this episode, we pull back the curtain to share some of the thinking (and tasting) behind the decisions, and we run through your Readers' Choice picks for best beers of the year, best breweries, best beer cities, best beer bars, and more.
Today on Consuming the Craft, I sat down with Jesse Phillips from Port City Brewing Company in Alexandria, Virginia. We took a deep dive into Port City's current lineup, including their much-lauded Oktoberfest, their adventurous lager series, and their limited-run Brewer's Cut releases. Jesse also shared his perspective on seasonal beer trends, local collaborations—especially with coffee roasters—and the importance of creative small batches in keeping both staff and customers excited. Throughout, Jesse brought a selection of impressive beers and joined me for a tasting of an exceptional bourbon, Eagle Rare, sparking conversations about pairing, palate development, and the joy of connecting over a shared craft. Jesse Phillips is the warehouse manager at Port City Brewing, where he oversees beer movements from production to the tasting room and helps track consumer preferences through his keen observations. Having started his brewing career at Port City, Jesse is passionate about expanding his palate through lagers and experimental releases. He has a talent for fostering local collaborations, especially with coffee roasters around the DMV, and is an advocate for seasonal and small-batch beers that surprise and delight customers. Jesse's energy and insider perspective brought unique insights into Port City's brewing philosophy and community-driven approach. A bonus episode this week as we're pleased to bring you Seen Through a Glass, a podcast produced and hosted by Lew Bryson. Here's what he has to say about this episode: THE PEOPLE HAVE SPOKEN! I asked you who you wanted me to interview, and you said "Give us The Pizza Boy, Al Kominski!" Well, I cannot defy or deny the people, so I went down to Al's of Hampden in Enola on the West Shore and got the interview...and then hung around and visited some more breweries: Ever Grain, Mellow Mink, Sworn, Hemauer, and Liquid Noise.I got in a visit to Sugar Run Brewing in Duncansville as well, and I'll tell you about opening night at the newest bar in Millheim: our home bar, First Draft, is finally complete, and spreading joy among our friends. And if you're interested...check out the @stagpodcast Instagram page to see a picture of our new Corgi puppy, Samwise!Next episode? Back in April, I did an Earth Day presentation at Ploughman Farm Cider's Gettysburg taproom on the agricultural aspects of rye whiskey, along with a cider guy talking about the same thing. We'll hear that, plus I'll tell you what it was like at the PA Cider Fest.
In this episode we unpack Paul's big idea that Christian hope isn't a wish—it's Spirit-wrought assurance anchored in God's promises. We contrast the world's “maybe” hope with the New Testament's anchor-hope, then trace Paul's chain of grace: tribulation produces perseverance, perseverance forges character, and character yields a hope that will never put us to shame. We look at how God's love is poured into our hearts by the Holy Spirit, giving us confidence to rejoice even in suffering. Finally, we explore the “when” of the atonement—Christ died for the ungodly precisely when we were without strength, and He did so in real history at the Father's appointed time. Pastoral takeaways: rehearse truth when waves hit, bring afflictions to God in prayer, and let the cross reshape how you treat those who wrong you.Beer review:Mill Pond from Oyster City Brewing Vol Lager from Yee-Haw Brewing,
Pilsner Urquell is one of the most famous beers in the world and many would argue it's the original golden lager as, after all, “Pilsner Urquell” means Original Pilsner. But what is its origin story, how is it brewed and how has Pilsner Urquell the beer evolved (if at all) from its invention in 1842 in the town of Plzen, Czech Republic? On this episode of the “All About Beer” podcast, we talk to Brewmaster Emeritus and Plzen native Václav Berka about the history of golden lager from the Czech perspective and how Pilsner Urquell conquered the world and brought Czech lager and drinking traditions to mankind. This Episode is Sponsored by:RahrBSGNeed ingredients and supplies that deliver consistent, high-quality beer? Seattle's Fast Fashion (https://themasonryseattle.com/fast-fashion/) has built a reputation for modern, forward-looking IPAs and hop-focused lagers, and the characterful brewery and taproom in SoDo expresses the eclectic interests and aesthetic taste of founder Matt Storm. It's a funhouse of sorts—a bit like drinking in a thrift store full of budget mid-century furniture, stocked with kitsch that spans the past six decades. It's busy and not necessarily thematically consistent—much like the beers the brewery makes—but it's different and unique. You will not confuse it with another brewery. Over the past half-decade, the beer itself has developed from quick hits of new hazy IPAs filled with the coolest names in hops, to a more diverse lineup of IPAs and lagers—still hop forward and immaculately crafted. Under head brewer Stefano Annicharico, they've found a way to make beer that keeps the baseball game-day crowd happy, while also continuing to explore the possibilities in contemporary beer styles. In this episode, Storm and Annichiarico discuss: how Anchovy hops came to have such a unique name brewing drinkable, semi-dry hazy IPA with heavy adjunct loads building acidity in the mash to promote drinkability despite later dry-hop additions that raise the pH boiling hops in hazy IPA with 20-minute additions for more longevity in package lowering whirlpool hop amounts and pushing higher loads in post-fermentation dry hops finding bits of distinct character in hops such as Nelson Sauvin, Motueka, and NZ Cascade (aka Taiheke) avoiding excessive rousing to limit hop burn using New Zealand hops in modern hoppy lager And more. The beer world is filled with achievements. A few weeks back the Great American Beer Festival handed out its annual awards. Around Denver there were other competitions like Alpha King and Krispy King. Brewers might be crowned in “best of” lists by newspapers or local magazines. Way back in the day Wynkoop Brewery would hand out its beer drinker of the year award.Other milestones are more private and personal. Don Tse, recently hit an important beer milestone. For nearly thirty years he has been chronicling and cataloguing every beer he has consumed. The number is impressive as is his commitment to the cause. One thing Josh Penney noticed after moving to Brooklyn from Los Angeles late last fall – aside from markedly less sunny weather – was a broader diversity in beer styles across brewery taprooms. “It seemed to be a wider range of things that were really appealing to everybody,” he said. “Because out on the West Coast, you might have a robust porter, but then you have, like, six different IPAs.” Penney is the head brewer at Brooklyn-based Threes Brewing, a role he took on last year after leaving Los Angeles' Highland Park Brewing. He joins this week's Brewbound Podcast to share insights gleaned from his bicoastal brewing career. Before the interview, the Brewbound team breaks down Molson Coors' latest corporate restructuring and dives into the scuttlebutt surrounding that ornery New York Times op-ed about one writer's personal issues with craft beer.

Japanese rice lagers are having a moment in the beer industry right now. It feels like nowadays everyone is brewing one and they've become a popular part of the golden lager trend. But what goes into making them and what unique ways are people exploring to bring this style to the next level? We've also been told that rice is just a cheap adjunct that adds no flavor of consequence but new research suggests that rice is more than it seems. On this episode of the All About Beer podcast, we talk to a brewery owner about new ways to brew Japanese rice lager (foeders?!) and a food scientist who gives us the new facts on rice flavor. Martin also went to Poland this year. He went to Wrocław. It's just Northwest of Krakow. While he was there he tried many many many many many many beers. He also found a couple to bring back with him. First is from Inne Beczki. Martin thought Miami would be a sour beer. Instead it's a pale lager or as they call it, an American lager. We follow that up with Browar Amber Woodside. This an imperial porter with an ABV of 10.5%. Both were quite a lot of fun to try and we look forward to more beers from Poland. #beer #craftbeer #drinks #lager #paleale #porter #imperialporter

As today's industry faces tighter margins, shifting consumer trends, and economic uncertainty, many brewers find themselves taking on new roles as managers and executives. Our panel today – moderated by Andy Crouch from Schilling's Oktoberfest - includes decision makers who have run brewhouses and have transitioned to running their businesses, folks who have worked for others and on their own, and have managed all parts of these operations. They share lessons on leadership, strategy, and the business realities of brewing today. For more Drink Beer, Think Beer check out All About Beer.SponsorsDogfish Head Craft BreweryCalling all hop heads! To commemorate the release of the latest Paul Thomas Anderson film, "One Battle After Another", Christian Bladt figured it would make for a great conversation with returning guests Liam and Eric. The 2024 World Beer Cup was quite a moment for Issaquah, Washington's Formula. (http://formulabrewing.com) Head brewer Jesse Brown is no stranger to medals, but four in one year at the world's most prestigious beer competition made a statement. His career as a brewer may look like “Swiss cheese,” with stints in Wyoming, Tennessee, Oregon, and Washington, but it's hard to poke holes in any of his thoughtfully designed and thoroughly executed lagers or IPAs. In this episode, Brown discusses ingredients as well as the labor-intensive process behind his helles, touches on the hot-side versus cold-side fresh-hop controversy, shares his approach to New Zealand hops that won him a silver medal for New Zealand–style IPA at World Beer Cup 2025, and finishes with thoughts on what it takes to win when so many brewers are making such great beer. Along the way, he discusses: front-side decoction without a dedicated vessel extended saccharification rests to build malt depth gently handling lager to avoid bruising the beer the differences between 34/70 strains transferring before terminal to get a head start on clearing yeast the fresh-hop “controversy” the beauty of Dolcita and building mouthfeel with hops blending base malts for West Coast IPA selecting early-pick New Zealand hops for lower diesel character And more. Learn how Solemn Oath's founder opened a brewery without brewing, transformed a hometown IPA into a cult classic, and built Hidden Hand's wild beer lab.Solemn Oath Brewery Founder and CEO John Barley shares how an untrained beer lover built one of Chicagoland's most creative and community-driven breweries. From his time in Belgium and Wisconsin to opening Naperville's first brewery in over a century, John's story is one of bold leaps and boundary-pushing flavor. He explains why Solemn Oath's Still Life taproom in Logan Square channels Belgian beer-hall energy with Midwestern hospitality, and how a surprising Coors connection helped him find his first brewer. John also discusses the rise of brewery euchre tournaments, how he launched a brewery without ever brewing a beer, and why he believes branding and camaraderie matter as much as hops. After the beer break, John dives into Solemn Oath's flagship Snaggletooth Bandana West Coast IPA, tracing its evolution from its early sea-hop bitterness to today's smoother, citrus-forward profile — and the cult following that's inspired fans to tattoo the Snaggletooth tooth on their skin. He also shares the origin of Hidden Hand, Solemn Oath's experimental offshoot exploring foeder-aged lagers, barrel-aged saisons, and approachable beers like The 77 light lager. Hear about the Oaked Val d'Or that won Best in Show at FOBAB, and what makes foeder aging uniquely expressive of Chicago's barrel-aged beer heritage.Plus: how Solemn Oath navigated Naperville's original three-drink limit, whether a third location might be next, and how a Robert Burns poem inspired the brewery's name while Napoleon's “hidden hand” lent mystery to its sister brand.About Solemn Oath Brewery: Solemn Oath Brewery is a Chicago-area brewery known for its Belgian-inspired and barrel-aged beers, offering a diverse lineup that blends American ingenuity with traditional Belgian styles. The Year of the Lager has been predicted for decades, and it is finally coming true. And the timing couldn't be better. Drinking habits continue to shift and younger audiences are increasingly embracing moderation or even alcohol abstinence. The craft beer industry finds itself at a crossroads. After decades of solid and sometimes explosive growth, craft beer faces both a challenge and an opportunity. Lager, with its approachable strength and depth of flavor, is uniquely positioned to thrive in this environment. And while craft lager comprises a small fraction of the beer market, it has never been more popular or relevant. Today we're going to explore how to reframe and sell lager for audiences who value balance, flavor, and authenticity, in a moment when many aren't reaching for a pint. For more Drink Beer, Think Beer check out All About Beer.SponsorsDogfish Head Craft BreweryCalling all hop heads! Ben Howe's brewing career reads more like that of a chef than a typical brewer—stints in Denmark, brewing jobs on both the East and West coasts, weeks spent interning at breweries that intrigued him—but one fateful visit to the Zehender brewery in Monchsambach opened his eyes to Franconian lager and inspired a nearly decade-long quest to understand the beer and its mechanisms of flavor. More recently at Otherlands (https://www.otherlandsbeer.com), he's pushed boundaries of accepted brewing dogma, mashing with pH levels far past any sensible range in an effort to build color and flavor—and the things that shouldn't work still obviously do work. In this episode, Howe discusses both his traditional methods and modern concessions, including: learning from Will Meyers and Megan Parisi at Cambridge Brewing capturing Franconian-ness in long-boiled lager beers old-style vs. new-style German lager brewing kräusening to carbonate rather than spunding before terminal never raising the temperature for a diacetyl rest while using ALDC to control precursors finding color with only pilsner malt hardening water for lager brewing with calcium carbonate, magnesium carbonate, and gypsum mashing above 5.8 pH maintaining atmospheric pressure for yeast during fermentation boiling large amounts of low-alpha hops for a long time to build flavor and texture And more.
