Let's talk about the one skill you absolutely MUST develop as a business owner - especially now, in this economic environment. It's not a trendy hack or secret formula - it's something powerful, practical, and completely learnable. I've noticed that many women building a business try to sidestep this skill because it pushes them out of their comfort zone. They feel uncertain, maybe even a little scared. But if you don't do it, you'll never get your business out of first gear. And unfortunately that's the reality for so many - why their business remains a side hustle even after years of effort. And … why the small biz failure rate is so high! Ok, let's get down to businesses In this episode we'll bust the myths around what it means to “do marketing” and why you don't need to be an extroverted, pushy promoter to set your business up for real success. Here's what you'll hear more about: Why directing your own marketing strategy is non-negotiable - and what happens if you try to hand it off to someone else. What truly matters in your marketing, from positioning and offers, to focusing on the right people (not just anyone with a pulse). How to build a simple, clear pathway that takes potential clients from “never heard of you” all the way to “raving fan” Why copying someone else's strategy will never work for your unique business, and what to do instead. How you can create a system for your business that feels easy, not exhausting - even if “marketing” usually gives you the chills. If you've ever wished marketing could feel natural and aligned (and actually get you the clients you want), this episode is for you. In this episode Joseph Towers opens the year with a comprehensive review of full-year 2025 rail traffic, highlighting modest overall growth driven by grains and coal, continued softness in industrial commodities such as metals and forest products, and a largely flat outlook for motor vehicles heading into 2026. The episode closes with an overview of the STB's new proposal to eliminate Part 1144, a move aimed at easing access to reciprocal switching and increasing rail competition, setting up key regulatory and market themes to watch as 2026 unfolds. The Rail Market Update is hosted by FTR's Senior Analyst, Rail, Joseph Towers. In this episode of The Daily, we explore the rising cost of rigidity as new regulations and market shifts challenge supply chain agility. We analyze how the FRA caps non-English rail crews at 10-mile border zone to create cross-border capacity bottlenecks and discuss New legislation could upend truck broker margins by imposing steep surcharges on carriers with safety violations. Shippers face a difficult balancing act as Inventory management strategy shifts once again toward leaner models, potentially risking stockouts if demand spikes in 2026. Meanwhile, ocean carriers are adopting split strategies, with significant Ocean rates as the New Year promises a good ‘blanking' for US East Coast, driving up rates while West Coast capacity expands. In the equipment sector, REPOWR's data shows it cost more in ‘25 for a short-term dry van rental despite a weak market, driven largely by tighter network security efforts. Finally, we look at the Canada Post, mail carriers tentatively agree on labor deal, which secures weekend delivery but locks in operational rigidity by rejecting dynamic routing. We also briefly touch on the STB asks comments on ‘completeness' of rail merger application as regulators review the 7,000-page document regarding the UP-NS deal. This regulatory scrutiny adds another layer of complexity to an industry already grappling with rapid structural changes. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

This episode highlights Airbus kicking its A350 freighter program into high gear, with the prototype finalized and flight tests set for next October, aiming for a late 2027 service entry. Learn how the A350F promises a 40% reduction in fuel consumption and features a massive 175-inch wide cargo door, giving it a significant edge in handling bulky industrial cargo. We also examine major rail consolidation, specifically the Surface Transportation Board approval of Fortress Investment Group's acquisition of two new regional lines, the Wheeling & Lake Erie Railway and the Akron Barberton Cluster Railway. This deal expands Fortress's roster of Class III railroads, and the STB agreed that the move would enhance the railways' access to capital for strategic investment and growth. Finally, we cover the worrying financial distress facing the 3PL sector as Odyssey Logistics was hit with a second debt downgrade from Moody's in less than three months, dropping its corporate family rating deep into Caa-1 "junk status". Moody's noted this rapid deterioration was driven by sky-high leverage—expected well over seven times operating profit—which creates serious refinancing risk ahead of the company's significant debt maturities in 2027. The Port of Los Angeles, which handled 10.3 million TEUs in 2024 and forms the busiest U.S. container gateway with Long Beach, plans to build a brand new terminal to accommodate the world's largest container ships. The new Pier 500 project will comprise two berths and 3,000 feet of wharf on 200 acres of land along the Pier 400 channel, with LA currently seeking proposals for a pre-development agreement regarding financial feasibility and other requirements. In legal news, former Surface Transportation Board member Robert Primus filed a federal lawsuit challenging his August 27th dismissal by President Trump, who removed him without giving a reason. Primus, the sole STB member to vote against the 2023 Canadian Pacific-Kansas City Southern merger, claims his firing violated the law requiring STB members to be removed only for causes like neglect of duty or malfeasance, and he is suing the President, STB Chairman Patrick Fuchs, and the STB. Walmart announced plans to build a $300 million fulfillment center in Kings Mountain, near Gastonia, North Carolina, which will be a 1.3 million square foot facility expected to open in 2027. This new center is designed to help Walmart serve customers faster, potentially shipping large items, while creating 300 jobs supported by a potential $4 million state job development grant. Tragický příběh odbojové organizace Světlana a osudy jejích členů rozplétají novinářka Lucie Korcová a dokumentarista Adam Drda.

This week in the Rail Market Update:STB Developments: President Trump nominated Dick Closter to replace Marty Oberman on the Surface Transportation Board and renominated Michelle Schultz, while Robert Primus continues to contest his firing. These moves come as the STB prepares to weigh the proposed Union Pacific–Norfolk Southern transcontinental merger. Rail Traffic Trends: For the week ending September 13, North American rail traffic was down 0.9% y/y. Carloads declined in coal, forest products, and farm products (ex-grain), but chemicals and grains grew strongly. Intermodal fell 1.3%, largely due to weakness among U.S. western carriers. Big Picture Outlook: Recent weeks show continued carload weakness (coal, forest products, metallic ores) but some rebounds in chemicals and grains. U.S. intermodal volumes have been flat to down, with the latest week at their weakest since June, tied to softer port activity in Los Angeles and Long Beach. The Rail Market Update is hosted by FTR's Senior Analyst, Rail, Joseph Towers. I have recorded multiple episodes on the topic of "Sharpening The Blade." Sharpening the blade is a term used by chefs, lumberjacks and hockey players that means, take the time to sharpen your blade and you will save time and effort while you cut, chop or skate. I sharpen my mental blade multiple times a year. Short trips, hikes, weekends with no cell service and anything else that removes me from the grid would qualify as a STB! This last STB was one for the ages. I trained for it, planned for it and executed it to the highest level. It involved an entire month of travel, new experiences, killer waves, massive wipeouts, sun, fun and romance. (Ahhh ha honey! That's right baby) You don't need to do what I did to get similar results. You just need to have an intention and create an environment that is conducive to that intention. You have Bali in your heart. You have Thailand in your loins. You just need to dig deeper to find it. (That didn't sound right!) Enjoy this episode. I enjoyed recording it for you. Episode 543 - Todd Bearden, Green Turtle Brewery Happy Monday, Thieves! Back at the Hotel Karol lobby bar this week - although it feels more like a business center. Amid all the insurance brokers in town for a conference Augie and John sit down with Todd Bearden, the owner of Green Turtle. It recently opened, having taken over the former Cycle Brewing Spot in St. Pete. Todd Bearden earned his BFA in Lighting Design and began his career bringing stories to life on and off Broadway before transitioning into the world of film and television. About 15 years ago, while living in Florida, he discovered a new creative outlet—homebrewing. Over the years, he honed his craft, winning awards in competitions, serving as a judge at numerous homebrew events, and absorbing wisdom from The Brewing Network, where mentors Jamil Zainasheff and the late Mike “Tasty” McDole helped shape his brewing philosophy. After years in Los Angeles and Las Vegas, Todd decided it was time to return to Florida and pursue a long-held dream. Two years of planning and passion culminated in the opening of Green Turtle Brewery & Public House in downtown St. Petersburg. Opened just a month ago, the brewery specializes in traditional cask ales served on beer engines alongside a range of classic beer styles—bringing together Todd's dedication to craft, tradition, and community in a warm, English pub-inspired setting. Thanks to Visit St. Pete-Clearwater for hosting us in the area and the Hotel Karol for lodging and excellent breakfast potatoes. ***As always, you can email your questions, complaints, whimpers, or whines to us at stealthisbeerpodcast@gmail.com. While both grew up in Chicago, they have strong family roots in Safety Harbor, FL. Kevin's Great Aunt moved to Safety Harbor in the 60s when she built a house. She was involved in the local community and even sold the Chamber of Commerce building to the Chamber. Kevin's Grandparents often visited her, and when they retired, they purchased a house down the street from her. Steve and Kevin have personally been visiting Safety Harbor for more than 30 years. Around 2009 Steve moved to Safety Harbor after retiring and Kevin made the jump in 2016. After some time working in the Cigar City tasting room, Kevin and Steve decided to set out on their own and open up Troubled Waters Brewing Company. They are now five years into the project. Discover how C.H. Robinson's aggressive adoption of AI has significantly boosted its stock price, even in a weak freight market, leading to a 52-week high. Learn about their new "Always-on Logistics Planner," an agentic AI-driven "digital teammate" within its Managed Solutions 4PL arm, which autonomously handles tasks 24/7 and has achieved 100% customer adoption among its clients. We confront the growing peril of escalating cargo theft, a critical concern in the industry, with North American cargo thefts surging 27% year-over-year in 2024, resulting in $455 million in stolen goods across 3,625 incidents. Hear how Ceva Logistics alone suffered over $18.3 million in losses from eight incidents, often due to security policy breakdowns like using unvetted carriers or inactive GPS trackers, making warehouses particularly vulnerable. Analyze major shifts in international trade, including a new EU-US trade truce framework designed to stabilize container flows for goods like pharmaceuticals and agricultural products on transatlantic lanes. However, this framework notably excludes automobiles, with continued high tariffs leading to a 16.8% decline in European car exports to the U.S. in the first half of this year, potentially shifting consumer demand towards domestic or Asian suppliers. Examine developments in workforce and infrastructure, as FedEx Supply Chain is laying off 611 employees in Memphis after Cummins Inc. moved a significant portion of its distribution to a new 3PL in Indianapolis for efficiency. In stark contrast, South Korea's Hanwha Group announced a $5 billion investment to expand its Philadelphia shipyard, aiming to increase shipbuilding capacity to 20 vessels annually and double the local workforce to 3,000 by 2025 as part of a larger $150 billion commitment to revitalizing the U.S. maritime sector. Finally, we unpack the serious rail regulatory turbulence caused by President Trump's firing of STB member Robert E. Primus, creating a 2-2 partisan split and leaving the board short two members. This controversial move comes just months before a major merger application (Union Pacific-Norfolk Southern) is expected and has already stalled other important rail proceedings, raising concerns that it could weaken the board and harm the freight rail network, consumers, and the economy. Get free PDF of New Questions, Old Answers: Catholic Morals and Natural Family Planning https://profide.io/nfp/ Article on the marital debt https://christianrenaissancemovement.com/2023/02/23/thoughts-on-the-marital-debt/ The way Natural Family Planning is commonly taught does not adequately reflect the Church's perennial teachings on the purpose of marital relations, on sexual asceticism, and the good of continence. To be sure, critics of NFP are wrong when they say it is the same as contraception. The Church has deemed it legitimate to use under certain circumstances. Yet its typical presentation in marriage prep programs and by popular Catholic speakers has ended up, in practice, encouraging couples toward habitual venial sin. Discussions of NFP often end up in confusion because they fail to distinguish two separate moral issues: that of avoiding marital relations during fertile periods, and that of engaging in them specifically during infertile periods. As to the first issue, the Church has said we need sufficient reason to deliberately avoid procreating for a long period of time. But the second issue involves a moral doctrine that is virtually never heard of today: that there are particular ends which must be intended in any act of marital relations, and in particular, that it is a venial sin for married couples to have relations purely for pleasure (solam voluptatem, in Pope Innocent XI's phrase). The latter is the teaching of all Fathers and Doctors of the Church without exception. Given this moral doctrine, and given the Church's (and St. Paul's) traditional encouragement of asceticism within marriage, the question arises: may married couples engage in recreational relations specifically while trying to avoid conception? Answering this question involves questions about the intrinsic ends of sexual intercourse, questions about what “purely for pleasure” even means, etc. The stakes of the question are low in the sense that this would generally be a matter of venial sin, but high in the sense that it bears on our understanding of the very purpose of marriage and sex, and because habitual, deliberate venial sin is incompatible with a marriage's growth in holiness. Moral theologian Eamonn Clark joins the podcast to discuss his groundbreaking book (the first on this topic since the 1940s), New Questions, Old Answers: Catholic Morals and Natural Family Planning. His conclusions occupy a middle ground between the extremely strict position of some great Catholic authorities of the past, and the laxity and sensualism presented by some well-regarded and well-meaning popular speakers today. This discussion will be spiritually and perhaps emotionally challenging to many listeners, but I urge you to listen with an open heart, because even if you end up disagreeing with some of the specific conclusions, you will come away better informed about Church teaching, and equipped to consider for yourself how you can seek greater holiness in marriage. In particular, I highly recommend Eamonn's book to anyone who is involved in running marriage preparation programs. Eamonn Clark is a licensed moral theologian of the Catholic Church – he has an STB and STL from the Pontifical University of St. Thomas Aquinas in Rome, where he is currently a lay doctoral student researching the social teaching of Pope Pius XI.
