Dry January 2025 has commenced, but how measurable were effects on beer sales across grocery retailers? According to NielsenIQ sales data, non-alcoholic beer scored a record-high 4.2% share of all beer sold through grocery retailers in January. Moreover, non-alcoholic beer saw slightly more than 20 percent YoY volume growth last month…compared to the six percent YoY decline seen by the traditional beer category. Over the past three years, Dry January non-alcoholic beer sales across grocery retailers have grown 138%...with the marketplace doubling to over 150 brands selling non-alcoholic beers. But even with that heightened level of competition, the non-alcoholic beer category leader, Athletic Brewing has continued its dominance by again achieving Dry January top-seller status in 2025…successfully outselling non-alcoholic product variants from beer giants from Anheuser-Busch and Heineken.

Like the effervescent bubbles in her sparkling wine, Emily Heintz believes that true quality always rises to the top. Emily is the visionary behind Sèchey, a dynamic platform that includes a luxury dealcoholized wine brand, a dry bottle shop in South Carolina, and a thriving DTC business offering a wide range of alcohol analogs. Sèchey also curated Target's non-alcoholic adult beverage set, bringing elevated options to the mass retailer's shelves. Sèchey's strategic direction and impressive momentum caught the attention of InvestBev, a private equity firm specializing in adult beverages. In August, InvestBev made an undisclosed investment in the company, with founder Brian Rosen praising Sèchey for having “gotten farther with less than anyone else we've seen.” In this episode, Emily joins us for a dive deep into her vision for Sèchey and the journey of building the brand. Framed around a series of true or false questions, Emily discusses the key factors driving the growth of the non-alcoholic beverage category, how Gen Z and Millennial lifestyles are shaping awareness and trial, and why she believes the founder's voice is the most essential tool in connecting with customers. Show notes: 0:25: Emily Heintz, Founder & CEO, Sèchey – Emily and Ray sample some of Sèchey's sparkling wine, before she discusses her inspiration to start the company, whether her lack of experience in beverages impacted the company early on and why NA wine has the biggest upside among alcohol analogs. She also talks about what's driving traffic in Sèchey's retail store, whether category growth is directly tied to negative health effects of alcohol, and the gap between millennials and Gen Z consumers' perception of wine. Emily also highlights Sèchey's partnership with Target, her perspective that the future of NA beverages isn't in liquor stores, why she's only somewhat concerned about lower quality options in the space, and why she believes that the first adult beverage for younger generations should be a non-alcoholic one. “ I never lost my ability to breathe. I never lost completely my ability to swallow. We had to adjust things for a little while. But I am a huge believer that being as fit at that moment as I was going to be all year—I needed that to get through what I got through and to be able to get up and moving again so quickly.” Lynn Rogers had completed one IRONMAN triathlon and was training for another when her hands started to go numb. Next, it was her feet and her tongue. In the end, she'd be paralyzed from the chest down—the consequence of a progressive, chronic autoimmune disease called chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyradiculoneuropathy (CIDP). Lynn entered rehab at the very hospital where she was working as a brain scientist, and though she regained her ability to walk and eventually to run, that was just the first step along a very long and bumpy road. Through it all—successful treatments and failed ones, daily symptoms like numb and tingling hands and feet interspersed with more serious flares—she's continued competing. But now, her training is infused with a far greater purpose. She credits the fitness and functionality she had when she got sick for facilitating her recovery, and the joy and community she finds in sport for making each day all the more meaningful. Lynn is an ambassador for Athletic Brewing, which in 2024 released an incredible documentary called Inches to Miles that chronicles her journey (and that of two other amazing athletes) to IRONMAN Lake Placid. In this episode—and the film—you'll learn the meaning behind Lynn's powerful mantra, “This is what we're doing now” and truly understand how, when it comes to chronic illness, there's always another chapter to the story. Is booze so bad that it should come with a warning label? The U.S. Surgeon General thinks so and has advised Congress to act. What, if any, impact would potential legislation have? The hosts discuss. This episode also features an interview with Julie Cielo, the founder of pioneering non-alcoholic cocktail brand Ferm Fatale, who talks about the successes, missteps and eventual closure of her company. Show notes: 0:25: Marina Mike. Damp Jacqui. Vegas Craven. Aisle Ray. VIPers. Dunkin' Pits. Bad Booze. Bull Blood. – Ray thought John was doing Dry January, but it's another Craven (and Jacqui, sort of) that's off the sauce. Did we see Mike surf in MDR? You may see John and Ray in Las Vegas and San Diego in a few days. Just as Ray will never sit in a middle seat, Patagonia Provisions never misses. Which of us had dreams of launching a better-for-you soda brand in college? The answer is in our newsletter. Does the world need a Boston cream donut-scented conditioner or orange soda shampoo? Target and Walmart buyers say YES. Are government officials unfairly demonizing alcoholic beverages? What about sugar? Good questions, and we have answe… well, opinions. John mixes up a fresh batch of bull blood-infused beverages before Jacqui gives a ‘fiend a chance and Mike sweats from eating spicy cookies. 32:59: Interview: Julie Cielo, Founder, Ferm Fatale – Launched in 2015, Ferm Fatale was conceived as an “alternative social beverage” designed for health-conscious consumers and marketed as a mixer or a drink that could be served on its own. In the years that followed, the brand's positioning and packaging evolved to align with growing interest in sober living and rising demand for alcohol analogs. While Ferm Fatale built a significant online business and was carried by natural retailers in Southern California, including Erewhon, the brand faced operational and financial challenges that were difficult to overcome. Last year, Julie made the decision to shut down the company. When Amanda Hesser was pursuing a profession after college, she decided to take the road less traveled and less certain by pursuing a love of traditional methods of cooking in kitchens scattered around Europe. As her passion for cooking and food continued, it started taking her out of the kitchen and into the keyboard which ultimately led to a dream career in food journalism for the New York Times. Landing a job with NYT might be the pinnacle of any career, but after a while Amanda felt pulled to something else. In 2008 she launched Food52, an online community that combines cooking, home goods, and a social network for food lovers. Today we're going to hear more about Amanda's story and how Athletic Brewing has partnered with Food52 to craft our new brew, Host & Toast, a Belgian-style White bursting with flavor. It features sweet Meyer lemon and notes of Grains of Paradise atop herbal and peppery undertones. Whether you enjoy it on its own or elevated in an NA cocktail, it's an easy pick for effortless entertaining. Bring it home and let the hosting begin! You can purchase Host & Toast here.

Do you remember last year when Kristen Bell and Dax Shepard revealed their kids sometimes order non-alcoholic beer at restaurants. Well…it sparked an important discussion around how the emerging alcohol-like beverage category fits into the consumption habits of minors. When Recess Mood or a “beer” from Athletic Brewing were conceptualized, these entrepreneurs created products with adults in mind. But broken down to their most basic ingredients, many are hardly different from juice, soda, or kombucha. So, with that in mind…should these drinks be legally off-limits to minors? There's obviously a multitude of unknowns around long-term psychological impacts, but as a parent…I'd rather the decision be left to the home and not state governments. And that's because these alcohol-like beverages could very well be a useful tool in steering young people away from the real thing. I used to be a bit of a stickler when it came to low and no alcohol beer—because it didn't really fit into my lifestyle at the time, I didn't see the point of it. These days, however, I've not only accepted that it's important to see more alcohol free beer on the bar, but believe its increasing availability is a net positive to beer culture as a whole. Not only does it give people who don't drink alcohol the chance to enjoy beer, but it allows people to curate their habits, whether that's to drink more mindfully, or cut down on the units in certain situations or at certain times of the year. Most importantly, I believe the increasing availability of good quality alcohol free beer opens up beer and pub culture to more people. And more people choosing to socialise and spend time in pubs is something that all of us should be celebrating. With a greater number of good quality draught low and now alcohol beer options coming to the market, this is a trend I expect to continue. One of the breakout low and no alcohol beer brands of the past few years is Milford, Connecticut's Athletic Brewing Company. Established in 2017 by Bill Shufelt and John Walker, in just seven short years it's grown to have multiple brewing sites, release well over 100 different beers—all low/no—and attain a market valuation of a staggering $800 million. They've even opened a taproom, which brings a beer experience most of us take for granted to a much wider range of people. While alcohol free beer is growing in the US beer market, it's not doing so quite as quickly as it is in the UK, where there seems to be less remaining stigma around alcohol free beer. As a result, Bill spends a fair amount of time in the UK as he helps to steward the growth of his brand over here. Most recently, Athletic has partnered with Arsenal Football Club as an official drinks partner, providing further mainstream exposure for a brand that shows no signs of slowing down.In this brand new episode of the Pellicle Podcast I caught up with Athletic Brewing Company's co-founder Bill Shufelt during SIBA's Beer X conference in Liverpool. We chatted about, among other things, the stratospheric growth of his brewery, their approach to producing their alcohol free products, and why the UK is a crucial market for low alcohol brands. If you're keen to understand the dynamic alcohol free beer market, then this episode is a must-listen.We're able to produce The Pellicle Podcast directly thanks to our Patreon subscribers, and our sponsors Loughran Brewers Select. We're kicking off the Halloween season this year with our new series, Saxon Samhain, where we take a look at various John Saxon horror movies! First up is The Evil Eye, which gets confusing because this Mario Bava film has two versions. We're specifically talking about the American AIP version that features a different ending, different score, and a couple of edits; we also do talk a little about the Italian version The Girl Who Knew Too Much. On the Saxony scale, this one scores a 4. Listen on to find out what we thought! We're also drinking Athletic Brewing's non-alcoholic Oktoberfest. After securing endorsements from JJ Watt to Karlie Kloss as well as a partnership with Arsenal Football Club, Athletic now faces a flurry of beer industry titans flooding into non-alcoholic brews. Upon its much hyped debut in 2019, Recess was dubbed by the press as “the Lacroix of CBD.” Founder and CEO Ben Witte has always preferred a different tagline: “the Red Bull of relaxation.” CBD was the fuel for Recess' hot start, but when the beverage industry cooled on the cannabinoid — the result of a challenging regulatory environment — the company turned to another trendy ingredient: magnesium. In 2021, Recess introduced Recess Mood, a new line of sparkling waters infused with magnesium and adaptogens and marketed as modern relaxation beverages. Leading with the tagline of “calm, cool, collected,” the products have become the primary driver of sales of the brand and represent the vision that founder and CEO Ben Witte says he always had for Recess: a platform of beverages intended to help people relax. The company later added Mood powders to the mix, and in 2022 launched a line of zero-proof mocktails that Ben describes as a natural extension of the brand. Recess has emerged from the pivot as a prime-time player that is sold in over 18,000 stores nationally and is one of the best-selling beverage brands on Amazon. It is mentioned and merchandised alongside the likes of high-profile drinks like Olipop, Poppi and Liquid Death. In this episode, Ben talks about how he navigated a shift toward a product mix that realizes his vision of a relaxation beverage platform, how Recess built a thriving online business, how the company utilizes consumer feedback to support its sales and marketing efforts and why it is preparing for a major expansion in brick-and-mortar retail. Show notes: 0:35: Ben Witte, Founder & CEO, Recess – Taste Radio editor Ray Latif recalls his first interview with Ben and the hype around Recess' launch in 2019, before the entrepreneur talks about his reasoning for developing a brand focused on relaxation and how the timing of Recess' launch benefited the brand. He also discusses the strategy of building a digitally native omni channel brand, how a quote from Amazon founder Jeff Bezos helped him realize the importance of patience, and how he identified magnesium as an anchor ingredient for Recess. Ben also explains how the rise of non-alcoholic beer has helped the development of Recess' zero-proof cocktails, how consumers' interactions with consumers has evolved and the brand's communication has changed and how brick-and-mortar success is tied to online advertising. Brands in this episode: Recess, Olipop, Poppi, Liquid Death, White Claw, Athletic Brewing, High Noon, Cutwater, Topo Chico, Kin, Ghia
