Bill Shufelt was a hedge fund analyst who didn't drink, couldn't find a non-alcoholic beer worth ordering, and one night his wife spun him around on a sidewalk and told him to do something about it. Eight years later, Athletic Brewing has 300 employees, four breweries, over a million barrels of capacity, and has almost single-handedly turned non-alcoholic beer from a stigmatized afterthought into 20% of all beer at Whole Foods. In this conversation, Bill walks through the full journey: the two years of research before he quit his job, the valley of darkness where no brewery, distributor, or investor would take his calls, finding his co-founder John Walker through a brewing forum post (with the words "non-alcoholic" deliberately removed), and the grassroots field marketing strategy that built the brand one race, one taproom, and one six-pack at a time. He also gets into the competitive explosion that followed, why he views 200 brands entering his category as a positive, and what it's like to redefine success once the business reaches cruising altitude. If you've ever looked at a category and thought "why hasn't anyone fixed this yet", this is the episode that shows you what happens when someone actually does. After the invention of the microscope, scientists could see and start to isolate and control yeast. Now, thanks to new scientific developments, there are new yeast strains, designed to work better in current breweries, with current ingredients and to produce currently in vogue flavors. There is probably no other area in brewing where science is making beer better. This Episode is Sponsored by:HopsteinerLet's talk brewhouse efficiency: Replacing pellet loads with Salvo cannot only boost aroma density, but reduce trub load and increase beer wart. That theme carries into a discussion of Ithaca Hummus founder Chris Kirby and his new venture, Guillermo's Salsa, with the hosts crediting the brand's early traction to strong execution, product quality, retail expertise, and Kirby's operational experience. According to Live Nation Entertainment, 60 percent of attendees alternate between alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks at live events. Additionally, with internal consumer research showing that 80 percent of attendees believe a “great beverage” enhances the experience, it probably shouldn't surprise you to hear that Live Nation Entertainment has taken an increasingly active investment role within the beverage industry. And as the “mindful drinking” and “sober curious” movements spread…Live Nation Entertainment continues to bet big on better-for-you alcohol alternatives, believing heavily that the growth of zero-proof partying will make the beverage segment increasingly attractive within on-premise settings. So, in recent years, the world's leading live entertainment company has expanded how attendees can celebrate throughout a show…strategically investing in Athletic Brewing, Liquid Death, JOLENE Coffee, and most recently social tonic maker Hiyo.
There are some raw materials in the brewing world that are the butt of jokes or customers claim they don't like them because they have heard bad or false things about them. Two brewing ingredients come to mind: Sabro hops, which were released in 2018 and crystal malt, which is used in many styles from English bitters to American amber ales. But are these ingredients really so bad? On the All About Beer podcast today we talk to four guests who will help us demystify these misunderstood members of the brewing world and find out if people's ire is really justified or perhaps we should be looking at Sabro and crystal malt with fresh eyes.Visit AllAboutBeer.com for more podcasts, to read original articles, and to get info on upcoming events.Click here to support independent journalism covering the beer industry. This Episode is Sponsored by:HopsteinerLet's talk brewhouse efficiency: Replacing pellet loads with Salvo cannot only boost aroma density, but reduce trub load and increase beer wart. The eisbock story is a fun lore of beer myth, a hapless brewery employee left a barrel of doppelbock outside during a snowstorm in Germany and some of the beer froze, concentrating flavor and thus creating a whole new beer style. While the roots of this story may not wholly be true, it's a fun addition to a beer style made by distillation processes at its most base level. These beers are rare in the United States as you need special licenses to make them but in Europe, the rules are a bit different and in some European countries, these beers, not just eisbocks, have taken on a life of their own. And this is before we start talking about other drinks like the amazing ice cider made by freeze distillation. How does the freezing process work and what changes does it make to these drinks? This month on the All About Beer podcast, we talk to three guests with unique views on this chilly process. When Bill Shufelt left Wall Street to make non-alcoholic beer, most people thought he was crazy. At the time, the category made up less than 1% of U.S. beer sales and was widely seen as a joke. But nearly a decade later, Shufelt's company Athletic Brewing is at the center of a major cultural shift around health and wellness. On this episode of Bold Names, he joins Christopher Mims and Tim Higgins to talk about the rise of non-alcoholic beer, how his company is navigating President Trump's tariffs, and why beer giants like Heineken and Guinness are now chasing the category he helped create. Hook is a wonderfully charming movie about rediscovering the joys of one's youth. That said, critics hated it when it was released in 1991, and its director, Steven Spielberg, isn't all that high on it either. The latter is a little puzzling. Sure, Hook is too long and gets oddly dark at times, but there is still so much to enjoy. Principally, both Dustin Hoffman as Captain Hook and Robin Williams as Pan all grown up are just having a blast. Description In this final episode of the year, Rob Anderson steps back for a solo reflection on the key lessons, themes, and mindset shifts that emerged from conversations with Elevate Yourself guests throughout the past year. Rather than recap episodes, Rob connects the dots across fitness, nutrition, sleep, social connection, wearables, burnout, and sustainable routines — highlighting what actually works in real life and corporate wellness settings. Today, I'm sharing a case study and an analysis that I originally shared with our LABS members. The reason I'm doing this is, one of the most valuable things that we can do as a product-based business owner is look outside of our industry for inspiration, ideas, and new ways of thinking about our own business. When we study how other industries structure their revenue models, how they build community or how they create demand for their products, we really start to see new and fresh opportunities that we can adapt in our own way for our own business. In this episode, we're looking at Athletic Brewing Company and how they doubled their D2C subscription sales in 2025 by positioning their membership as a VIP lifestyle experience rather than a discount program. It's a simple shift, but a strategic one. It really sparked two ideas that I think you can use: One will be for your D2C sales ecosystem, and one is for your wholesale channel. We will walk through what Athletic Brewing Company got right, why their approach works, and how you can apply versions of this inside of your own business in a way that again fits your particular audience, your product line, margins, and, of course, your capacity. If you want to see more case studies like this, real examples from outside of the consumer gift world, and you want to see how we break them down into actionable insights and ideas for your product brand, this is exactly the type of work we do inside of Proof to Product LABS every single week. This is a coaching program specifically built for product-based business owners, with members from across industries and across the globe. We have member-only events inside of LABS, so request your invitation to join below!
