This week we explore Ska-Jazz. Specifically, we talk to Fred Reiter (aka Rocksteady Freddie), the band leader of the New York Ska-Jazz Ensemble. And we aim to understand the difference between the jazz-influenced traditional ska sound and ska-jazz. Fred gives us a simple explanation and a more complex technical explanation. But Fred also talks about his entire personal history in music: He studied jazz in high school--clarinet, flute and saxophone. He played the sax in a variety of bands including the N.Y. Citizens, The Scofflaws and The Toasters. New York Ska-Jazz Ensemble started as a recording project, but he soon realized there was a demand for it on the live circuit. The band continues to play. To this day they have played in 37 different countries. Fred also tells us what it was like to be a part of the legendary Skavoovie tour in 1993 (The Special Beat, The Selecter, The Skatalites, The Toasters), what it was like to share the stage with Coolie Ranx, how the German band The Busters helped get the New York Ska-Jazz Ensemble to Europe, and what it was like to back ska legend Laurel Aitken in the 90s. Plus we discuss various elements of jazz, and why the elitism of the genre he experienced in New York may have influenced him to play in ska bands. Support the show

Coolie Ranx returns, and he's brought former Oingo Boingo bassist, Joh Avila! John brings stories about producing Boingo, Reel Big Fish and of course, The Pilfers Chawalaleng.
JJ and Matt are joined by genuine ska celebrity, Coolie Ranx (The Toasters, The Pilfers) to talk about dancehall attitude, improvising live and committing to ska long-term.
In the early '90s, Coolie Ranx had his eyes set on being a dancehall star. That is until a friend dared him to audition to be The Toasters' new vocalist. He got the gig, and off to Europe he went (Though, a little uncomfortable with the Mohawk, spike-studded punks that came to these shows). He quit Toasters, but eventually came back and joined the group just before they did the Skavoovee tour, along with The Special Beat, The Selecter, and The Skatalites. At the time, Coolie was so entrenched in the dancehall world, he wasn't even familiar with any of these groups--even The SkatalitesThat would change. After recording two studio albums with The Toasters (Dub 56, Hard Band For Dead), he quit the group and started Pilfers, a unique '90s ska band that mixed elements of rock, hardcore, reggae, dancehall, pop and punk. Coolie called their genre "raggacore," and the description was apt. There weren't other groups at the time that sounded like them. On this episode, we talk to Coolie about his musical music. We talk about the 2000s UK ska-punk scene (King Prawn, Sonic Boom Six) that sounded a lot more like Pilfers than the 90s US ska scene did. We break down some Pilfers songs, like "Generation," and we all admire Coolie's amazing impression of Rob "Bucket" Hingely. We also talk about Coolie's new solo album, Days Gone By, which you should purchase immediately. Support the show

I’m writing an oral history about the birth of American ska and reggae called Ska Boom that will be published by DiWulf Publishing later this year or in early 2020. I've created this podcast to document the book writing process and in this podcast I’m telling the story of the 1993 Skavoovie tour of the U.S. featuring the Skatalites, Special Beat, the Selecter and the Toasters which had much to do with expanding the popularity of ska across the U.S. The podcast includes interviews with vocalist Coolie Ranx of the Toasters/Pilfers, Randy "Now" Ellis of City Gardens fame, who was the Skavoovie tour manager and Special Beat keyboardist Sean Flowerdew.
