Our guest this week is a free spirit, viewing the world differently to those around her as a young girl, but not sure why. A healthy rebellious streak kept testing boundaries and stretching the "requirements" of the status quo. Leah's natural curiosity leading her to try new things and in finding her own lane to flow to. As a young woman, she embraced her power to create the life she wanted to live having the realisation that work could be fun and also the means to save up, travel and explore to discover what was out there in the world. And gave freedom! The adventures of travel brought colour and experiences that fed her SOul and expansion! At 21 Yoga, meditation and connection to Spirituality deepened her belief in what felt right for her, despite the level of safety offered by staying within a "normal path of growing up". Leah has walked her own road to achieve her goals, we could say driven and motivated - there is a divine sense of gratitude emanating and we see a woman creating with a calm and happy external manner but we also gather after sitting with her, living also with deep innate knowingness of what she wants. That inner fire every Goddess holds within her essence! Leah & her husband Adam have birthed from their worldly experiences, something as a reflection of their worldly experiences with Nature and Spirit perhaps, Kyma Wellness Lab. Kyma Wellness Lab has been created to be A HEALING SPA FOR YOUR MIND, BODY AND SOUL. Yes, thats all in capitals because in a busy space that is the streets of the GC and Coolie, you walk in the door and instantly you are away from the world! Truly an OASIS where the experience's you can choose are absolutely out of the hum drum of everyday reality! In a world that often drains our vitality, demands our constant attention, and distracts us from our true purpose, Kyma serves as your exclusive retreat—a sanctuary where you can replenish your physical, mental, and spiritual energy. Leah and her husband Adam have designed every aspect of their offerings at Kyma to create the ultimate biohacking experience through state-of-the-art wellness technologies, empowering your body's natural healing abilities. You can bring the word Psychedelic into the experience of what happens behind the doors...the science stands behind what they offer at Kyma. Jo & Amanda have been graced with the Lucia Light experience Leah speaks of - ecstatic in a word ! Playing in the Light is so good for the Soul. We will share more about this with you.... In this episode, our host Satish Kaushik takes a nostalgic journey back to the 90s blockbuster "Coolie," featuring the iconic trio of Amitabh Bachchan, Rishi Kapoor, and Waheeda Rehman. Directed by the legendary filmmaker Manmohan Desai, this action-comedy was an absolute crowd puller, packing theaters all over the country. Interestingly, it was during the filming of "Coolie" that the infamous injury to Amitabh Bachchan occurred, adding a dramatic chapter to the actor's history.

We are the descendants of Indian indentured laborers, brought to the Caribbean after the abolition of slavery. Our roots run deep, interwoven with Indian, African, European, and Caribbean influences, and forged through centuries of migration, colonialism, survival, and resilience. Yet, our story remains largely untold. As Brenda Beck puts it in a 1992 South Asian Diaspora article, media narratives of our people are often based on derogatory stereotypes that fail to capture the richness and complexity of our heritage. So, what does it truly mean to be Indo-Caribbean? For us, it means embracing a history of displacement and triumph, speaking English while cherishing our connection to the Indian language and dialects. It means losing ourselves in Bollywood movies, from the beloved "Kuch Kuch Hota Hai" to the soul-stirring "Dil To Pagal Hai" and "Kal Ho Naa Ho." It means dancing to Hindi film songs at birthdays, weddings, and basement jams, despite not knowing the meaning behind all the lyrics. It means cultivating a love for cricket, music, and dance, drawing from our Caribbean surroundings while honoring the cultural traditions of our ancestors. Our food, a fusion of Indian and Caribbean flavors, showcases the intricate blend of spices and ingredients, enriched with local delights like plantain, cassava and, of course, Guyana Shrimp. Join us for Episode 7 of the Pepper Pot Podcast as we explore the challenges we encountered in forming our identities as descendents of Indian Indentured Workers. Together, we reclaim our narrative, honour the generations before us, and inspire those to come. Follow and connect with The Peppa Pot Podcast online, we'd love to hear from you! Did you know that between 1834 and 1917, more than one million Coolies were taken across the Kala Pani, or Dark Waters, to the plantations of Malaya, Mauritius, Fiji, Trinidad, British Guiana, Jamaica, and British Honduras? In “Coolie Woman: the Odyssey of Indenture,” Gaiutra Bahadur describes how the British and other Colonial Powers transformed generations of skilled Indians into an “indistinguishable mass of plantation laborers.” Part of that transformation took part during the journey from India to the Caribbean which, for many, was unimaginably excruciating. In fact, poor ventilation, outbreaks of disease, and a lack of food was common aboard the ships used to transport Indentured Indians. When they reached their destination, they were met with a hostile and unfamiliar environment and forced to work long hours for low wages. But despite all odds, they persevered and laid a foundation that future generations would build on. Learn more about the strength, resilience, and legacy of the Indo-Caribbean community in Episode 2 of The Peppa Pot Podcast: Camphor on the Dark Waters. In this episode, historian Dr. Arunima Datta talks to us about the lesser known history of thousands of Indian coolie women who worked on plantations in British Malaya in the 19th century, the surprising reasons for them joining the Rani of Jhansi regiment during the freedom struggle, and the contemporary relevance of their stories. ‘In Perspective' is The Swaddle's podcast series where academics reveal little-known facts about Indian history, society and culture. Notes: 00:00:21:09- What led to colonial administrators and European planters promoting Indian coolie women's migration to British Malaya in the 19th century? 00:02:44:10- Why did they recruit Indian coolie women in particular? 00:04:44:00- How did the representation of coolie women in popular nationalist and colonial discourses on British Malaya misrepresent Indian coolie women? Did these depictions take away from the coolie women's agency?00:06:06:24- Could you tell us about the famous 1910 case involving Letchmee, a coolie woman, and Deyal Singh? Why did the trial become ‘sensational'? 00:08:54:19- What were the issues with the “moralities” colonial administrators deployed when describing or adjudicating this and other cases related to coolie women's intimate relationships? 00:12:03:05- How did Indian coolie women become central to the power struggle that escalated between the British imperial governments and Indian nationalists between the 1920s and 1930s? 00:14:21:00- Why did many coolie women end up joining the Rani of Jhansi Regiment, and how did they describe this shift in their lives in their own accounts? 00:19:13:24- What is the contemporary relevance of these narratives of Indian coolie women in British Malaya? Why is it important for us to look back at this and what can we learn from it?

In the early '90s, Coolie Ranx had his eyes set on being a dancehall star. That is until a friend dared him to audition to be The Toasters' new vocalist. He got the gig, and off to Europe he went (Though, a little uncomfortable with the Mohawk, spike-studded punks that came to these shows). He quit Toasters, but eventually came back and joined the group just before they did the Skavoovee tour, along with The Special Beat, The Selecter, and The Skatalites. At the time, Coolie was so entrenched in the dancehall world, he wasn't even familiar with any of these groups--even The SkatalitesThat would change. After recording two studio albums with The Toasters (Dub 56, Hard Band For Dead), he quit the group and started Pilfers, a unique '90s ska band that mixed elements of rock, hardcore, reggae, dancehall, pop and punk. Coolie called their genre "raggacore," and the description was apt. There weren't other groups at the time that sounded like them. On this episode, we talk to Coolie about his musical music. We talk about the 2000s UK ska-punk scene (King Prawn, Sonic Boom Six) that sounded a lot more like Pilfers than the 90s US ska scene did. We break down some Pilfers songs, like "Generation," and we all admire Coolie's amazing impression of Rob "Bucket" Hingely. We also talk about Coolie's new solo album, Days Gone By, which you should purchase immediately. Support the show
This week RJ and Matt start the show by discussing how they spent their weekend. Than they tell you about the latest ska news. Next they chat with Coolie Ranx. Coolie talks about how he got into ska music and how Pilfers got their start. Coolie talks about his upcoming album and we listen the first single, Incredible. Coolie also discusses life on the road and what he would like to see more of in ska music. Lastly, Coolie Ranx, Matt and RJ all give you their ska picks of the week. B. Cox and J. Owe review the Bronx rap duo Camp Lo's cult classic debut Uptown Saturday Night. After spending the initial parts of their careers together apart, Sonny Cheeba and Geechie Suede rose through the independent rap scene and collaborated with up and coming producer Ski for their debut album. Bolstered by the megahot single "Luchini (This is It)", the group compiled their album highlighted by Ski's mix of funky soulful and suspense filled beats with flows that were smooth and silky, yet stream of consciousness at times. The album flaunted a throwback theme that harkened back to slang and vernacular from the 70s that complimented the laid back, yet sharp deameanor and fashion that Camp Lo possesed. The album, while not wildly succesful commecial outside of "Luchini", was hailed by critics and fans alike, gaining cult status and has been hailed a classic by many 25 years later.Visit The Vault Classic Music Reviews Onlinewww.vaultclassicpod.comJoin our Private Facebook Listener Group!https://www.facebook.com/groups/600256077743122Support The Vault Classic Music Review on Buy Me A Coffeehttps://www.buymeacoffee.com/vaultclassicpodShow NotesAbover Average Hip-Hop: Camp Lo's "Uptown Saturday Night Turns 20 http://aboveaveragehiphop.com/camp-los-uptown-saturday-night-turns-20/The BoomBox: Camp Lo's "Uptown Saturday Night": A Look Back At An Unsung 90s Classichttps://theboombox.com/camp-los-uptown-saturday-night-a-look-back-at-an-unsung-90s-classic/Vinyl Me Please: Where Camp Lo Was Coming Fromhttps://www.vinylmeplease.com/blogs/magazine/camp-lo-introSupport this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/the-vault-classic-music-reviews-podcast/donationsAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy
BG (Before Google), Cattle Judging, Jail Etiquette, the importance of family, legacy and the infamous FREE COOLIE story!
In this episode Shabnum is joined by Juanita Dudhnath of Brown Girl Magazine as both of them talk through the dark history of indentured servitude that led to Indian migration to the Caribbean, and how four to five generations onward the culture of Indo-Caribbean people has evolved. Juanita explains the term "Coolie," and how it can have both familiar and negative connotations, and she explains the hyphenated identity that Indo-Caribbeans have uniquely lived with for generations when the world is just now starting to normalize a hyphenated identity. We also talked a bit about the perception problem of other South Asian Americans not seeing Indo-Caribbeans as our own, and how the world is changing to enable more of these conversations to be had in order to drive changes in thinking. "In most scholarship, the Rastafari movement is thought to have formed from a rethinking of biblical prophecies enabled by Black consciousness. Rastafari scholars have not sufficiently probed the tentative connections between the movement and Hinduism. Most map the movement in a dialectic between White oppressive Christianity and oppressed Afro-Jamaicans, which has produced a Rastafari that reappropriates, repurposes, and reproduces the Black and African ethos while actively disentangling the Afro-Indian intimacies that are found across the archives. Moreover, this view diminishes the agency of the members of the Jamaican lower class (the Indo and Afro-Jamaicans) to organize among themselves. This [audio] article... aims to excavate the historical silences of the Hindu contributions to the genesis and development of the movement's metaphysics" Song at the beginning of episode: Super Cat - Ghetto Red Hot Song at the end of episode: Beverly Pancham Ramparsard - Chitawaniya Me Naina For information on the sources used in this episode, visit our website at: https://www.tenementyaadmedia.com/ Don't forget to follow us on our social media Twitter: https://twitter.com/tenementyaad_?lan Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/tenementyaad_/?hl=en Want to support The Yaad monetary? Fleeting Agencies: A Social History of Indian Coolie Women in British Malaya (Cambridge UP, 2021) disrupts the male-dominated narratives by focusing on gendered patterns of migration and showing how South Asian women labour migrants engaged with the process of migration, interacted with other migrants and negotiated colonial laws. This is the first study of Indian coolie women in British Malaya to date. In exploring the politicization of labour migration trends and gender relations in the colonial plantation society in British Malaya, the author foregrounds how the migrant Indian 'coolie' women manipulated colonial legal and administrative perceptions of Indian women; their gender-prescriptive roles, relations within patriarchal marriage institutions, and even the emerging Indian national independence movement in India and Malaya. All this, to ensure their survival, escape from unfavourable relations and situations, and improve their lives. The book also introduces the concept of situational or fleeting agency, which contributes to further a nuanced understanding of agency in the lives of Indian coolie women. Arunima Datta is a historian of South and Southeast Asia and the British Empire. Her main area of research interest focuses on the transnational mobility of South Asians in the colonial period (nineteenth and twentieth century) across different parts of the British Empire. Much of Dr. Datta's research has simultaneously also focused on themes of labor history, transnational Indian nationalism, women's and gender history. In addition to Fleeting Agencies, she has also published a number of articles and chapters, concerning South Asian labor, migration and women's histories. Her current research project is centered around the migration and mobility of Indian Travelling Ayahs (travelling nannies) across the British Empire in the nineteenth and twentieth century. Dr. Datta also serves as a member of the editorial board for the journal Gender & History, Journal of Malaysian Branch of the Royal Asiatic Society and Asian Journal of Social Science Studies.
