You've almost certainly heard his playing on a number of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers hits, as well as on “Free Fallin'” and “Runnin' Down a Dream” from Tom's biggest solo album, “Full Moon Fever.” He was a member of the ‘70s band Crabby Appleton, and has also recorded and played with the Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan, Joe Walsh, Roy Orbison, Waddy Wachtel, Marc Ford and a host of other elite artists. If you've been following the recent political machinations out of D.C. or in any state, you've probably wondered at some point: “how did THAT guy get elected to public office?!” Sadly, the bar is really low. The good news is that there are hundreds of new, first-time, working class, and diverse candidates who have decided to raise their hands, take the plunge and run for office locally in the past 5 years. And there are some outstanding groups working to recruit, guide and help these new candidates in their runs for anything from city council to school board to precinct delegate to drain commissioner. In this episode, Mike is joined by Amanda Litman, the co-founder of Run for Something, an organization that launched in 2017 and has successfully helped elect 508 candidates in 48 states. These winners are 56% women, 56% Black, Indigenous or People of Color, 21% LGBTQ+, and all 40 years old or younger. This crop of candidates represent the majority of Americans that want a living wage, climate justice, voting rights, equal rights for women, and all the other obvious things. And while the results aren't exactly in for Election Day 2021, the majority is winning. And Amanda delivers some inspiring news in grim times. Plus, Mike shares the story of how, in the first election that 18-year olds were given the right to vote, he ran for school board with the promise of firing the principal and firing the vice principal of his high school...and won! This week on Comes a Time, the one and only George Porter Jr. joins Oteil and Mike for an enriching conversation about his riveting life in music. You'll hear about why George is proud of the record that he made over quarantine and how the process of making it was different than what he's used to, George's indoctrination into the world of the Grateful Dead and why his version of “Eyes of the World” is Oteil's favorite, as well as what it was like to grow up as a musician in New Orleans. You'll also hear Oteil and George dive deep into the low end as they discuss pocket vs. chops for bassists, the story of how George got sober and never looked back, and why we have a donut shop and George's father to thank for his masterfully funky bass playing. George Porter Jr. founded The Meters in 1965 alongside Art Neville, Leo Nocentelli, and Joseph Zigaboo Modeliste. Known as one of the progenitors of funk, The Meters carved their own place in history with syncopated polyrhythms and grooves inherited from New Orleans' deep African musical roots. They have influenced everyone from Led Zeppelin and Bob Marley to the Red Hot Chili Peppers and the Beastie Boys, with Porter's heavy pockets and fat notes creating the rubbery bass lines behind anthems like “Cissy Strut” and “Just Kissed My Baby.” George's reputation with The Meters made him a highly coveted session bassist, which has landed him in the studio with David Byrne, Jimmy Buffet, Taj Mahal, and many other legendary artists. Born and raised in the Crescent City, Porter will forever be New Orleans music royalty, and he calls the city home to this day.Check out George Porter Jr. and Runnin' Pardners new album, Crying For Hope, here.-----------*DISCLAIMER: This podcast does NOT provide medical advice. Composers Datebook
James P. Johnson's "signature tune" for 1920s

Composers Datebook

Play Episode Listen Later Oct 29, 2021 2:00

Synopsis On today's date in 1923, the comedy team of Flournoy Miller and Aubrey Lyles were the star attraction in a new musical called “Runnin' Wild,” which opened at the Colonial Theater at Broadway and 62nd Street. In their day, Miller and Lyles were the African-American equivalent of Abbot and Costello or Laurel and Hardy. The plot they crafted for “Runnin' Wild,” like many musical plots back then, was flimsy: two Southern con-men on the run head north to St. Paul, Minnesota, but find the natives too strange and the climate too cold. This “plot” provided an excuse for comic sketches to be sandwiched in between snappy song and dance numbers, the latter invariably involving leggy showgirls. One dance number in the show struck gold for its composer, James P. Johnson. Johnson called this tune “Charleston,” after the dockside home of many recent African-American immigrants to New York City's west side. Scholars have traced this dance step back to the west side of Africa, however – an Ashanti Ancestor dance, to be exact. But whatever its source, this catchy rhythm made Johnson famous, and rapidly became the signature tune for the “Roaring Twenties,” a decade of flappers, bathtub gin, and all that jazz! Music Played in Today's Program James P. Johnson (1894 - 1955) — Charleston (Leslie Stifelman, piano; Concordia Orchestra; Marin Alsop, cond.) MusicMasters 67140

Guest: Todd Simon, Southern Utah Head Coach In this week's coaching conversation, Southern Utah head coach Todd Simon joins the Basketball Podcast to discuss the scoring offense, triggers, and a relationship-based program. At the start of the 2021-22 season, Todd Simon will be in his sixth year at the helm of the Southern Utah University men's basketball team after being named the head coach on March 24, 2016. Simon led the Thunderbirds to their first-ever Big Sky Championship during the 2020-21 season, as they were named Big Sky Conference Regular Season Champions after finishing conference play with a record of 12-2. Simon was named interim head coach of the UNLV men's basketball program in January 2016 and immediately led them to three consecutive victories. During Simon's 17 games, the Runnin' Rebels ranked as the number one team in the nation in adjusted tempo, scoring more than 100 points in four games. UNLV finished with a 9-8 record, despite playing with as few as five scholarship players. Prior to being named interim head coach, Simon was in his third year as associate head coach with UNLV and had a critical role in assembling UNLV's roster, which Rivals.com ranked its 2014 recruiting class No. 5 in the nation, while the 2015 class was ranked No. 11. Prior to his tenure as a Runnin' Rebel, Simon served Findlay Prep for seven years in both head and assistant coaching roles. As head coach at Findlay Prep in 2012-2013, he led the team to a 35-1 record, including eight wins over top-25 ranked teams. It's rare you have a group that doesn't just stick to their morals but go deeper into them as they go. But here's Brand Nubian, dropping critically loved albums throughout the 90s and half of the time without a key founding member. Mix that with the 5 percenter elements & their production chops as a collective and you have a very interesting group.TIMESTAMPS:Weekly Music Roundup - (0:52)Topic Intro/Ben's Research House - (17:11)One For All - (29:19)In God We Trust - (40:38)Everything Is Everything - (50:50)Foundation - (57:33)Fire In The Hole - (1:04:07)Time's Runnin' Out - (1:07:43)Lighter Note - (1:13:46)Thanks for listening. Comedians Big Norm and Keith Pedro are like the Filipino counterparts to Method Man and Redman.   As the hosts of the live cannabis comedy show Bare Jokes and members of the hip-hop comedy group Runnin' at the Mouth, their comedy offers hilarious observations about race relations, multiculturalism, and pop culture.   In the second part of our extremely blunted interview, we talk to Big Norm and Keith Pedro about when they first realized they were funny, classic Canadian PSAs ("People think I eat too Many Chocolate Bars"), and who they believed to be the funniest rappers in the game.
