“I wanted to get kids to work more collaboratively. We say we're a collaborative group, but the conductor is behind the piano teaching the choir parts rather than saying, ‘here's the part I want you to learn. Go learn it. Here are the expectations and come back and self-assess yourself.' So, I designed performance tasks. I'll work on it as a group first, so they have some capacity for it. Then I'll have them break into sectionals and go reinforce it.”William Gunn is the director of music at Plymouth Regional High School where he conducts the Concert Band, Jazz Ensemble, Concert Choir, Chamber Singers, and teaches a year long guitar elective. The newest directions in 21st Century trumpet performance are being explored and defined by Courtney Jones, an award-winning Bach performing and recording artist who has also emerged as a leading figure in contemporary performance and pedagogy, conducting, and service to inner-city youth through music outreach programs. An artist who transcends stylistic boundaries and in high demand as a clinician and adjudicator, Courtney has performed with classical ensembles and orchestras throughout the United States, internationally, and has won multiple solo awards and accolades through regional and national trumpet competitions. This journey began in Jones' hometown of Columbus, Georgia. While earning his Bachelor of Music degree at Columbus State University, Courtney performed with various Columbus State University ensembles and recorded with artists such as Jens Lindemann, Joseph Alessi, John Bruce Yeh, and the Columbus State University Wind Ensemble under the Naxos Music label. While completing his Master of Music degree in Trumpet Performance at Shenandoah Conservatory in Winchester, Virginia, Courtney studied under the instruction of J. Carlton Rowe, former Principal Trumpet of the “President's Own” United States Marine Band, Craig Fraedrich of The U.S. Army Blues, and performed as Substitute Principal with the Loudon Symphony Orchestra of Leesburg, Virginia. He also had additional studies with Steve Hendrickson of the National Symphony Orchestra Courtney conducted his doctoral studies at UCLA under the instruction of international soloist and former lead trumpet of the Canadian Brass, Jens Lindemann. During his time at UCLA, Courtney worked as a Teaching Associate for lecture courses and provided weekly lessons for university trumpet students under the direction of Lindemann. Winner of a Gluck Fellowship, Jones was then selected as the conductor of the UCLA Brass Ensemble during the latter part of his residency. His musicological research during this period explored 21st Century ideological and transcendental concepts of performance practice focusing on a lesser-known contemporary work of composer Frank Ticheli, The First Voice for Solo Bb Trumpet. The intention of this dissertation was to broaden the technical capabilities of 21st century performers and shed light on the ideological and philosophical foundations of Ticheli's composition. While the study is largely analytic and interpretive, the main purpose and goal is to help modern trumpet players develop more confidence in performing Ticheli's music and other contemporary compositions in related genres. Before completing his doctorate, Courtney was appointed as the Visiting Assistant Professor of Trumpet at the Voxman School of Music at the University of Iowa. During his two-year residency Jones served as the Principal Trumpet for the Iowa Faculty Brass Quintet, taught Graduate Brass Pedagogy and Literature, and served on recital and graduate committees. He was asked to lead the University's top performing Jazz Ensemble (director on leave) and produced an engaging performance concert by the University's Brass Ensemble (which had previously been inactive for a number of years) to showcase the importance of Brass Bands as an engaging training ground for solidifying technical and pedagogical facility for brass players. In addition to his applied obligations, Courtney performed with Orchestra Iowa, the Dubuque Symphony, and gave solo performances with both the Cedar Rapids Municipal Band and New Horizons Band. One of which was the Midwest Premiere of Kim Scharnberg's Travelogue for Eb Trumpet. Besides performing with well-known jazz and popular artists, he has shared the stage with famous artists or groups such as Kenny Burrell, B.B. King, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Rihanna, Lalo Schifrin, Vanessa Williams, Boy George and The Culture Club, Jennifer Cox, and Stevie Wonder. In addition to his solo performance career, Courtney has performed with the Golden States Pop Orchestra, the Southeast Symphony Orchestra, the Macao Orchestra (China), the Pasadena Orchestra, the Debut Orchestra, the Inspiravi Chamber Orchestra, the Gateways Festival Orchestra, the Orchid City Brass Band, the Oslo Philharmonic (Norway), the Long Beach Opera, the Chamber Singers of Iowa City, the Salt-River Brass Band, the Gateways Brass Collective, and most recently had his Carnegie Hall and Metropolitan Art Museum performance debut this past May in New York. His feature film and television credits include music performed for “Glee,” “Notes from Dad,” “Cougar Town,” and “Criminal Minds” among other productions listed under the media tab of his website. Prior to his appointment at Florida Atlantic University as the Assistant Professor of Trumpet & Artistic Director of Jazz and Chamber Ensembles, Jones was a Lecturer of Music at Columbus State University while recording his Solo CD project, “Between 2 Worlds,” at the Joyce and Henry Schwob School of Music. Between teaching and solo performing engagements, Dr. Jones has and continues to promote music education and instrumental performance in inner-city schools through the Music Outreach Program at UCLA, The Harmony Project of Los Angeles, Trumpets 4 Kids in Dallas, Texas, and the Nat King Cole Generation Hope, Inc. Each of these programs offers schoolchildren art-in-education opportunities. These programs are essential because they provide underserved, inner-city students, and communities with musical training and mentorship that would otherwise be inaccessible.

Josh Feldstein Verve Jazz Ensemble leader Josh Feldstein has been a jazz drummer for more than 30 years. A native New Yorker who grew up on the NYC jazz scene, Josh formed the VJE in 2006 as a local performing group in the Danbury, CT area. The straight-ahead jazz unit – which paid homage to the legendary music of the famed Verve record label – soon took off with a large local following. After many years, at the prompting of its fans, Josh agreed to record the VJE's first album, aptly titled “It's About Time,” which unexpectedly hit #5 on the national JazzWeek radio chart in 2013. Fans and radio alike asked for more, and so, as an encore, Josh guided the band through the recording of its second album, “East End Sojourn” (2014) with guest guitarist Peter Bernstein joining the studio date. To the band's surprise, this album also achieved significant status with jazz radio, reaching #8 on the national JazzWeek chart and propelling the VJE to its second consecutive top 10 radio album. From there, Josh happily embraced the band's emerging studio recording pathway, initiating the group's third and fourth albums, “Perimeter” (2016) and “Swing-A-Nova” (2017), which resulted in another top 10 JazzWeek chart performance as well as a top 100 Album of the year placement. Looking to advance the band's sound and approach, in 2018 Josh expanded the VJE from its original 5 pieces — headed up by Jon Blanck on tenor and Tatum Greenblatt on trumpet — to 7 instruments, adding Alexa Tarantino on alto / flute and Willie Applewhite on trombone, which served to round out the rhythm section of Steve Einerson on piano and Elias Bailey on bass. Its septet album "Connect The Dots” proved to be a turning point for the VJE, the album hitting #1 on the JazzWeek chart in September 2018 for two consecutive weeks, and staying in the JazzWeek top 10 nearly 3 months. "Night Mode" (2019) expanded the VJE's wide US and European footprint further, again placing top 10 on the JazzWeek charts to much critical acclaim. And in January 2021, Josh and the VJE released its latest offering, “The VJE: Very Live!” — the Verve Jazz Ensemble's first live album, recorded at a benefit concert in Hadley, MA just prior to the pandemic lockdown. As VJE leader, drummer and occasional writer and arranger, Josh selects the band's music. He works closely with Jon Blanck, Tatum Greenblatt and other VJE musicians to craft the group's broad portfolio of arrangements, and oversees the band's steady recording and production schedule. A jazz musician through and through, Josh has studied extensively with drumming legends John Riley and Joe Morello. Josh was born in Manhattan and received his degree from Queens College, City University of New York. In addition to working on the VJE's next recording already, Josh is also diligently pursuing new musical and percussive challenges on his never-ending road to better understanding and performing the musical art form he loves called Jazz.

Welcome to the What's Next! podcast with Tiffani Bova.   I'm thrilled to bring back a conversation with Josh Linkner that I believe is extremely timely in our tech-driven world.    Josh is a five-time tech entrepreneur and hyper-growth CEO, two-time New York Times Bestselling author, top-rated keynote speaker, and founding partner of Detroit Venture Partners.    Josh lives at the intersection of tech and advertising. In this episode, we explore how this intersection includes hacking, reinvention, and creativity.    THIS EPISODE IS PERFECT FOR… anyone who wants to hear a different perspective on innovation as Josh reveals the common threads he found among law enforcement and cybersecurity professionals about how they approach problem-solving and change.    TODAY'S MAIN MESSAGE… innovation is creativity directed productively. It's not a copycat company or idea but uncovering greatness in otherwise nondescript pieces of stone.   WHAT I LOVE MOST… Josh was adamant that you don't have to end a whole company's history to start a new one. He says big ideas and creativity are often combinations of little ideas strung together in a compelling way.     Running time: 33:46   Subscribe on iTunes   Find Tiffani on Social: Facebook Twitter LinkedIn   Find Josh on Social: Website  LinkedIn  Twitter

This week we explore Ska-Jazz. Specifically, we talk to Fred Reiter (aka Rocksteady Freddie), the band leader of the New York Ska-Jazz Ensemble. And we aim to understand the difference between the jazz-influenced traditional ska sound and ska-jazz. Fred gives us a simple explanation and a more complex technical explanation. But Fred also talks about his entire personal history in music: He studied jazz in high school--clarinet, flute and saxophone. He played the sax in a variety of bands including the N.Y. Citizens, The Scofflaws and The Toasters. New York Ska-Jazz Ensemble started as a recording project, but he soon realized there was a demand for it on the live circuit. The band continues to play. To this day they have played in 37 different countries. Fred also tells us what it was like to be a part of the legendary Skavoovie tour in 1993 (The Special Beat, The Selecter, The Skatalites, The Toasters), what it was like to share the stage with Coolie Ranx, how the German band The Busters helped get the New York Ska-Jazz Ensemble to Europe, and what it was like to back ska legend Laurel Aitken in the 90s. Plus we discuss various elements of jazz, and why the elitism of the genre he experienced in New York may have influenced him to play in ska bands. Support the show

Professional double-bassist Craig Scott of the Sydney Conservatorium joins Dan and Pia to discuss the ultimate team: the jazz ensemble.“There's probably no better example of democracy than a jazz ensemble – individual freedom, but with responsibility to the group,” –Michelle ObamaJazz improvisation follows a set of rules that enable creativity within a structure, so that out of a predictable pattern can come something different each time it's performed.Within an ensemble, each member might get their own moment to lead, by taking on the melody of the piece and expanding on it. The musician in the lead role can then signal, through their solo, that it's time for another musician to take up that leadership role. This requires all members of the band to be listening, not just to the notes, but for other cues to lead or make space for others.Links Judy Bailey Trio playing My Romance Yes to the Mess: Surprising Leadership Lessons from Jazz

The site of four recent felonies. 211 PC — Armed Robbery.” For better and often for worse, that style — jumpy, feverish and anarchic — mirrors the world we enter.” So too does our opening track reflect this jumpy, feverish and anarchic feeling. Composed and arranged by today's guest, a musician who has performed and recorded with many world class musicians including Dizzy Gillespie, Eddie Henderson, The Temptations, 10,000 Maniacs, The Four Tops and many others. My guest is a saxophonist, composer, arranger and educator as well as the founder, artistic director and conductor of the Rockland Youth Jazz Ensemble, an adjunct jazz professor at Bergen Community College, Bergen Catholic High School's Jazz Ensemble director and vice-president of the Rockland County Jazz and Blues Society. In 2019 he was the recipient of the Arts Council of Rockland's 2019 Performing Artist Award. It is my honor to introduce today's guest, the leader of The Peter Furlan Project and The Peter Furlan Trio & Quintet, Peter Furlan.
