In my twenty years of teaching, I've come across numerous pedagogical techniques designed to boost student learning, but few have been as transformative as interleaving. This technique, backed by cognitive science, has the power to enhance long-term retention and application of knowledge: yet it remains underutilised in many secondary school classrooms. Today, I want to explore generalisable rules for interleaving (a structured approach that any secondary school teacher can apply) and one that, to my knowledge, has never been formally outlined before. In September of 1903, Fred Rohrer and his family awoke to the sound of explosions in their living room, as an unknown figured attempted to kill them by dynamiting the residence. Instantly, Rohrer knew that his leadership role within Berne, Indiana's Temperance campaign was the assailant's motive.. With the use of the Berne Witness, Rohrer helped solidify Indiana's role in the national fight for Prohibition. In this new episode of Talking Hoosier History, learn about the way the Temperance Movement shaped grassroots organizing within Indiana as we discuss Rohrer's unwavering commitment to the cause through the lens of his newspaper. Written by Emily McGuire, hosted by Justin Clark, and produced by A.J. Chrapliwy. Hello and welcome to The Rob Burgess Show. I am, of course, your host, Rob Burgess. On this our 258th episode our guest is Mark Rohrer. Mark Rohrer was born and raised in northwest Indianapolis, in Pike Township. After graduating Indiana University and working in Operations Management for three years, he went back to work for the family business, Reno's Music. Reno, Mark's father, opened Reno's Music in 1991 and currently continues to serve the local and nationwide community with guitar sales. He has been happily married to his true love since 2014 and has two children. A quick programming note: For this episode, I decided to try something new. At the end, Mark and I played and sang a few songs on guitar. Mark sang the first song, “The Way Country Sounds” by Jeremy Pinnell. I sang the second song, “Dead Flowers” by the Rolling Stones. And Mark sang the third song, “I Don't Wanna Move” by the Oracle Sisters. The first two are songs we've played together many times and I practiced them ahead of time. The third song, though, was completely new to me and I had never heard it before. So, you might hear a few wrong chords played in that one, which was my fault. Also, Mark filmed a video version of this episode, which he is releasing on his YouTube channel: https://www.youtube.com/@ItsWelby Follow me on Mastodon: newsie.social/@therobburgessshow Check out my Linktree: linktr.ee/therobburgessshow Follow me on Bluesky: bsky.app/profile/robaburg.bsky.social

As I continue to bridge the gap in research to the therapy room, I also see deficits in pre-service training that can make therapy a better experience for both providers and families.Jessica Rohrer, BCBA-D, joins me to discuss her work with soft skills, using tools to measure and build compassion skills in the therapy room. Her research uses the Jefferson Scale of Physician Empathy, a tool primarily used to check compassion in the medical field, as a pre and post measurement on the impact of compassionate skills training. Dr. Rohrer developed the Compassionate Collaboration Tool as a checklist for provider self-reflection and a helpful next step to incorporating compassion skills in their therapy. The tool focuses on three skill sets in providers. Basic interview skills: introductions, note taking, nodding, and back channeling.Interest skills: asking and reflecting positivity on client interests and asking and reflecting caregiver priorities.Joining with the family: empathy statements, normalizing skills, and partnering skills. It can be easy to forget the emotional time our clients and their families may be experiencing when entering therapy, which is why it is crucial to focus on empathy and compassion in our basic skills for a positive experience. New clinicians may particularly experience more difficulty. If you're looking for next steps to include compassion in your therapy, Dr. Rohrer reminds you to self-monitor and reflect, consider group behavior skills training, and remember that every client and every family will have varying needs for compassion.#autism #speectherapyWhat's Inside:Bridging the gap in research in the therapy room. The root concept of “learning styles” is based on a simple and intuitive idea: different people most successfully learn through different means. Or maybe they best learn through different sensory or emotional inputs. Possibly because people with differing brains make them more receptive to certain ways of knowing and absorbing information. Some people managed to take this intuitive idea and build massively successful careers for decades. Students were labeled “Visual,” “Aural,” or “Kinesthetic” learners. The problem, as researchers discovered in the ‘00s, is that there's no good evidence to suggest that any of the “learning styles” models popular with teachers actually improved educational outcomes. But that did little to slow the popularity of learning styles — or the mini industry built up around them.
