Tokyo Ska Paradise Orchestra (TSPO, or Skapara) has been making records since 1990, but their music has been hard to come by in the US for much of their career. However, after their Supernova debut, and the availability of their entire back catalog for streaming, TSPO is finally getting the recognition they deserve. JJ and Matt have decided to become experts on the legendary band, and with the help of Chris Malone from The Pandamics, The Pilfers, and Bigger Thomas, they will take you through the history of TSPO.
Matt recently had the opportunity to hop on a Zoom with Coolie, Vinny and Nick from The Pilfers! Their seminal record from 1999, Chawalaleng is available for streaming for the very first time, and this coincides with a reunion of the band's original lineup. This is Coolie Ranx's third visit to Hornpod, check the feed for episodes 027 and 028 for the full Pilfers' Saga.
Host Junor Francis and producer Eric Kohler talk with legendary bassist, vocalist, producer, composer, and music educator, John Avila, of Oingo Boingo fame, and now of the group, Oingo Boingo Former Members. Video episode here: https://youtu.be/yE_itKfL1g4 This is a WEIRD ONE, kids. Ray and Brad are chipper and ready to go! Chuck is roadkill come-to-life. The guys talk about their week - including Brad and Chuck moderating at RI Comic Con, Chuck heading to New Orleans for Mark Normand's wedding, and then playing the first Senior Discount show in two years with the Pilfers. The week has left Chuck savaged and ravaged. Ray tells some fun wedding stories! The episode takes a strange turn around an hour-and-a-half. Before that - it's your typical FUNbearable ep, full of laughs, stacked with giggz, etc. After the 97-minute mark, we break into issues of anxiety, depression, and insecurities within the Fun Bear Jamboree. Warning: It honestly gets sad and dark, and we don't blame you if you turn it off before that point. But if you're also going through some hard stuff as well, we hope you get something from knowing other people are going through low, low lows. JJ and Matt are joined by genuine ska celebrity, Coolie Ranx (The Toasters, The Pilfers) to talk about dancehall attitude, improvising live and committing to ska long-term.
In the early '90s, Coolie Ranx had his eyes set on being a dancehall star. That is until a friend dared him to audition to be The Toasters' new vocalist. He got the gig, and off to Europe he went (Though, a little uncomfortable with the Mohawk, spike-studded punks that came to these shows). He quit Toasters, but eventually came back and joined the group just before they did the Skavoovee tour, along with The Special Beat, The Selecter, and The Skatalites. At the time, Coolie was so entrenched in the dancehall world, he wasn't even familiar with any of these groups--even The SkatalitesThat would change. After recording two studio albums with The Toasters (Dub 56, Hard Band For Dead), he quit the group and started Pilfers, a unique '90s ska band that mixed elements of rock, hardcore, reggae, dancehall, pop and punk. Coolie called their genre "raggacore," and the description was apt. There weren't other groups at the time that sounded like them. On this episode, we talk to Coolie about his musical music. We talk about the 2000s UK ska-punk scene (King Prawn, Sonic Boom Six) that sounded a lot more like Pilfers than the 90s US ska scene did. We break down some Pilfers songs, like "Generation," and we all admire Coolie's amazing impression of Rob "Bucket" Hingely. We also talk about Coolie's new solo album, Days Gone By, which you should purchase immediately. Support the show

On today's quick episode, I wanted to mention that I'm on the Talking Records Podcast with Jed Dion. We do a deep dive discussion on the album "Act Your Age" by the band Homegrown. I had so much fun talking with Jed and it would mean a lot to me if you took a listen. He's got a great show and I've been a fan for a long time. Home Grown was a North American skapunk/pop punk band formed in 1994 in Orange County, California. They released three full-length albums and several EPs before disbanding in 2005. Their music is often characterized as pop punk, lyrically favoring humor and silly or satirical subjects. The band signed to major label Outpost Recordings and released its second album, Act Your Age, in 1998. It increased their popularity and they toured extensively in support of it. The album had peaked at #24 on Billboard's Heatseekers chart in 1998. During this era of the band, the song "We are Dumb" appeared on the soundtracks of movies Half Baked and Homegrown. Cone left the band shortly after and was replaced by Justin Poyser. This line-up released EP Phone Home in 1999, which included the punk version of aqua's barbie girl. Later that year they toured with the band Limbeck, with whom they recorded a split EP called Connection. In March 2000, the band embarked on a US tour with Amazing Crowns, Limbeck, Pilfers, and the Gadjits. Around this time, the band released a split EP with Limback, through Utility Records. After returning home, they began writing material for their next album. Following this, the band were scheduled to go on a tour of the UK, which was ultimately cancelled.[4] Later in the year, Home Grown experienced significant line-up changes. Herco was forced to leave the group in order to undergo surgery and rehabilitation for a brain tumor. Poyser also left, leaving the band without a second guitar player. Lohrbach and Tran recruited Darren Reynolds from the band Longfellow as the new drummer, and spent some time searching for a suitable second guitarist. In addition, their label Outpost closed down and the band was without a recording contract. Eventually the band decided to continue as a trio without a second guitarist, and signed to the independent label Drive-Thru Records. Season 2 Episode 2 of Checkered Cast is here and it's a big deal!!! As we have discussed we decided to expand our content this season so that we not only continue to use our platform to highlight the voices of women in the #unitycommunity but also include people who are actively using their platform as allies to women & BIPOC rudies. Now with February being Black History Month here in the states we are honored to interview mister Coolie Ranx on the checkered cast. Coolie is a musician based out of NYC who hails from the UK & has complex Afro-Caribbean roots. He is the host of Car Sessions 2035 a weekly livestream that promotes traditional ska, two tone, punk ska, reggae, and international musicians. (https://www.facebook.com/Car-Sessions2035-108323954288434) You might also know Coolie from his Emcee days with The Toasters, as the frontman of the band he founded Pilfers, or his legendary guests vocals on a tremendous amount of tracks spanning the early 90s ska through present day. (https://www.facebook.com/pilfers) His legacy is massive as he has worked with artists such as The Pietasters, Reel Big Fish, Catch 22, various Grammy winning artists and he was featured as the voice of the character Little Jacob in Grand Theft Auto IV. (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coolie_Ranx) He is also the official MC of the Supernova International Ska Festival & hosted their epic 8+ hour livestream event as well as their weekly supernova saturdays streaming series. About the Tracks: Nathan Leigh and the Crisis Actors - This Machine Kills Centrists Nathan Leigh and the Crisis Actors are an interesting project that tends to play punk-influenced folk and rock music, but has been known to pull influences from all over the map ranging from swing to ska, to country and beyond. They pulled yours truly into play trombone on this record and it's one of my favorite projects I've been a part of. Their new album, "Myths, Conspiracy Theories and Other Things I Made Up to Sound Interesting" dropped last week, and it even had a ska song on it, lamenting an all too familiar attitude in our political discourse. The Autocratics - Brainwashed Friend The Autocratics, from Tokyo, Japan, are what would happen if you took bands like Bad Manners, Madness, and the Specials further refined that nutty two tone sound to its apex. Fronted by Shuhei Yokota (Rude Bones), The Autocratics have been carrying the two tone torch in Japan for over a decade now and have developed quite a fanbase, and yet remain one of ska's best-kept secrets. So grab your Fred Perry, crack open an ice-cold Stella and enjoy The Autocratics!!! Brainwashed Friends is my favorite track off the band's debut album. Tokyo Ska Paradise Orchestra - Perfect Future Tokyo Ska Paradise Orchestra is, for lack of a better description, perfect. My favorite band by about a mile and a half, having been together for over 30 years they've got a catalog deeper than the Marianas Trench. The band's trademark of blending ska with just about anything you can think of and making it their own is evident on this track, the leadoff/title track of 2009's "Perfect Future " Karikatura - White Lies The quick way to describe Karikatura is to say they play trans-global soul or world indie. A deeper inspection, however, yields a dizzying array of sounds ranging from jazz to cumbia to reggae to funk and of course the aforementioned soul. Crisscrossing the world for over 10 years, they dropped this aggressive meringue track, White Lies, as a response to the Eric Garner murder and Black Lives Matter movement. Diverse and eclectic music with (a) soul. Warsaw Poland Brothers - Summer of Ska Warsaw Poland Brothers are the unsung heroes of the socal/southwest ska scene. Having been active for over 30 years, and forming 2 sub-bands (California Celts, Kalifornia Krauts) they have managed to carve out a cult following from coast to coast. Great songwriting and excellent musicianship from the Poland brothers (Chris and Aaron). Summer of Ska is a single off the as of yet unreleased 8th album! The perfect track to get you ready for summer, even if we're all stuck indoors. Catch these guys if you ever get the chance and wish their singer Chris a happy 50th Birthday! About Chris: Chris Malone is a busy guy. Having been playing trombone in ska bands from all over the NYC/Long Island area for over 20 years, he is currently the bandleader/singer/trombonist in NYC based ska-punk band The Pandemics, he also occasionally plays with raggacore legends Pilfers. In addition to being an active musician, he also runs the fledgling record label, Lonely Atom Records, runs the Touring Ska Bands Facebook group (a resource for independent ska bands looking to book their own tours), and curates a Spotify playlist called The Best Ska Bands You've Never Heard Of that spotlights 5 criminally underrated ska bands from all over the world, hoping to shine a spotlight on all of the great ska bands making great music under most people's radars. The playlist is updated every Wednesday! 00:00 - Nathan Leigh & the Crisis Actors - This Machine Kills Centrists (Myths, Conspiracy Theories, and Other Stuff I Made Up To Sound Interesting '20) 01:59 - THE AUTOCRATICS - Brainwashed Friends (the Autocratics '17) 04:42 - Tokyo Ska Paradise Orchestra - Perfect Future (2020 Remaster) (TOKYO SKA TREASURES '20) 08:28 - Karikatura - White Lies (Speak Now '16) 12:35 - Tommy Tornado and the Clerks - Downhill (Back on Track '19) 17:04 - Warsaw Poland Bros. - Summer of Ska (Summer of Ska '19) RJ sez: I added the Tommy Tornado and the Clerks song because, well, I like that band, and this song seemed like it'd be in good company with all the great tracks that Chris chose. There's not too terribly much I can add about Chris that he didn't already cover, but I don't think he mentioned the Lonely Atom Youtube though, so go subscribe to that! I've known Chris for a few years now, he was even a guest on the late Ska After Party and we've kept up with each other via social media all this while. We've actually verified that we've been at shows at the same time, but that was well before we got in touch with each other. So this wraps up the Convoy series. It was a lot of fun these last 7 weeks, and it went so smoothly and brought so much good stuff to the show I'm fixing to find a way to do it all over again. If I'm lucky, I'll find another talented batch of folks to collaborate with! Hi there, we almost took another week off. A friend talked us into keep doing the show. So here we are, it's not trad ska focused at all. In fact it's very introspective song selection wise, very easy on the talking part. Featuring music by The Chinkees, Pilfers, Big D and the Kids Table, KEMURI, Tokyo Ska Paradise Orchestra, Buck-O-Nine, Spring Heeled Jack (USA), My Superhero, and The Parka Kings
