We are fortunate to occupy this stage for only a brief period of time. What happens after we leave? How do we maintain the progress we've made and ensure that others can stand on our shoulders? It's a question that we must grapple with in criterium racing. We've made a ton of progress over the past couple years but when our current leaders have moved on who comes next is unclear because it is our obligation to train our replacements. Gabe Lloyd and Daniel Holloway from The Call Up just us for a discussion on this very topic.
In Episode 17 of the Team EF Coaching Cycling Performance Podcast Zack Morris sits down with former multiple time pro and elite criterium national champion Daniel Holloway to discuss criterium racing strategy, tactics, and application of fitness. Ed Clancy is from a place called Barnsley, in the U.K. He's a guy who didn't come from a cycling family so his accomplishments are that more amazing. Ed says he was the bike as freedom. His very first race was a club 10 mile time trial. He didn't do so well but it didn't deter him from pursuing his dreams. Ed was just starting his A-levels for school when he got not the British Cycling system. He says the team pursuit always came easier to him than any of the other disciplines on the track. His haul of medals in big races is simply mind blowing. In the Olympics he has 3 golds and 1 bronze, World Championships his tally is at 6 golds, 5 silver medals and 1 bronze. If you look at his European Track Champs haul it stands at 5 gold and 2 bronze and then lets throw in 8 world record times in the team pursuit. Ed didn't push for a road career because he always had his eyes on the track. But don't be fooled, he was probably one of the best criterium riders in Europe. The U.K. Crit scene is no joke. And if you don't believe me just listen to my interview with Daniel Holloway who spent some time over there. In this interview Ed and I talk about marginal gains, pursuit training, his decision to retire and life after a pro career. Ed is one of my favorite interviews because he's such a cool ass dude.
Daniel Holloway is a professional cyclist who races for Texas Roadhouse and is a 20-time U.S. National Champion, a Pan Am Games gold medalist, and a member of the U.S. National long team for the 2021 Olympics in Tokyo. I met Daniel when he was a junior racing on the track, sometime around 2004. Years later, when I had the opportunity to race some of the European six days, I needed a partner, and Daniel ended up being the man for the job. He was one of the youngest riders in the field at our first Six Day in Dortmund, and I was one of the older riders in the peloton. I think it is quite accurate to say we really had no idea what the hell we were doing. Together, we stumbled our way through four seasons of racing Sixes, World Cups, and World Championships together. We had wins, crashes, DNFs, lots of laughs, and one moment that was pretty close to a fistfight. I thought having Daniel on the show would be the perfect excuse to tell some entertaining stories, and also to help my audience understand the archaic and iconic world of European Six Day racing.
