Attracting former residents back to Louisville — boomerangs, as they're known — could potentially be a way to increase the city's population. But there are challenges to it. LBF Senior Reporter Joel Stinnett joins us to talk about some of those issues on this week's Access Louisville podcast.Stinnett just wrapped up a cover story on the topic of boomerangs and how they fit into Louisville's growth strategy. The biggest stumbling block is the job market. In spite job gains in some sectors, Louisville doesn't have a lot of options for people holding advance degrees. Those jobs are often confined to bigger metropolises. Stinnett also looked at programs that small cities like Topeka, Kansas and Tulsa, Oklahoma have implemented in order to address a similar problem. After the boomerang discussion, we chat with Reporter Michael L. Jones about the financial troubles being experienced by Memorial Auditorium in Louisville and how a looming Metro budget cut may impact it. We also chat about an upcoming move by The Whirling Tiger, the closure of the Bristol Bar & Grille restaurant in Downtown Louisville and a pending relocation for Texas Roadhouse in Clarksville. Access Louisville, sponsored by Baird, is a weekly podcast from Louisville Business First. You can also follow it on popular podcast services including Apple Podcasts and Spotify.

On this week's Extra Serving, NRN editor in chief Sam Oches and executive editor Alicia Kelso discuss the latest restaurant industry news, including Inspire Brands' plans to go public plus earnings results from 18 currently public restaurant companies. First up is the news that Inspire had filed documents with the SEC to go public — a move that Sam and Alicia have anticipated for a few years, yet nevertheless feels huge for a restaurant industry that has been fairly dormant as far as IPOs are concerned. The editors discuss what this means for Inspire and whether it could nudge other companies to jump into the public markets. Then they take a dive into the crazy spate of restaurant earnings, of which there were 18 over the course of the week. They start with the burger category, where McDonald's, Burger King, and Shake Shack reported positive results, while Wendy's continued a run of negative sales. How are McDonald's and Burger King leveraging operations and marketing to build momentum, while Wendy's keeps taking the hits? Sam and Alicia break it down. Next they move into the full-service sector, where it's mostly good news, as Texas Roadhouse, BJ's, and First Watch continue to thrive while Applebee's and Bloomin' Brands are showing signs of life. Why does casual dinging in particular seem to be succeeding in the midst of this economy? Sam and Alicia discuss. They then dig into other brands that reported this week, including Noodles & Co. and El Pollo Loco — both of which wowed with their results — plus Sweetgreen, which posted a staggering -12.8% sales drop the same week it introduced wraps to the menu. Finally, we share an interview between managing editor Leigh Anne Zinsmeister and Jeff's Bagel Run cofounders Jeff and Danielle Perera, recorded live at Restaurant Leadership Conference. For more on these stories: Dunkin' owner Inspire Brands files documents for an IPOBurger King's sales surge while Popeyes strugglesTexas Roadhouse sprints to best same-store sales since '24

This week on Two Parents & A Podcast, we're talking labor induction, due date myths, and birth signs (because YES, we are officially T-10 days and I'm overanalyzing cusp babies, my last meal before birth, and why hospital bags are such a thing in the first place.) We also get into WHY I'm getting induced again, the fact that dilation charts are absolutely insane (Cheerio -> BAGEL?!), and the craziest places people have given birth (NYC subway car = new fear unlocked), which, if anything, did not calm me down at all. We start with Facebook in 2026 being the actual wild, wild west, Harrison getting very locked in for the World Cup (turns out it's not for 2 months??? but it's EVERYWHERE), and the realization that kids really do teach you to stop and smell the roses (literally). Plus, Tate's first dance recital is coming and I'm already emotional about it. Then we get into a little pop culture break, including who is actually A-list (apparently NOT Hilary Duff??), West and Amanda (skip if you must), and our Paradise season 1 review. Plus, sorry, we have like 10 minutes of doom and gloom: (1) Texas Roadhouse “butter” not actually being butter, and (2) lead found in baby clothes (guys... being a consumer is hard). Okay, finally, we end with something to celebrate: a plane passenger gives birth mid-flight, and both mom and baby are healthy!!! I tried to think of the craziest place I could give birth and we figured it out (LIVE ON THE POD hahahha).  LOVE YOU GUYS! This week on Eat, Drink, Smoke, Tony Katz and Fingers Malloy do what any reasonable adults would do in the middle of allergy season: light up a cigar and pretend that counts as medicine. They’re smoking a Southern Draw Lady Killer — a special Privada Cigar Club release from 2021 (don’t ask how it showed up… it just did). It’s a 6.5 x 46 Lonsdale with an Ecuadorian Habano Maduro wrapper, a Nicaraguan Corojo ’99 hybrid binder, and Criollo ’98 fillers from Estelí, Jalapa, and Condega. Translation: a lot going on, in the best way. Expect talk of spice, cedar, cocoa, great construction… and also a very serious debate over whether Tony can retrohale without launching an eyeball into low Earth orbit. On the pour side, they crack open something from right here in Indiana: Starlight Distillery Honey Reserve Bourbon, a limited release finished in honey barrels and coming in hot at 106 proof. It’s sweet, it’s creamy, it’s got big heat, and it may or may not temporarily clear sinuses like a courthouse subpoena. Neat, on a cube, with a little water — they run it through the full “this might hurt your sister” testing process. Then it turns into classic EDS chaos: Tipping culture is out of control (and Texas Roadhouse gets dragged into the allegation zone). A deep dive into civil asset forfeiture and a lawsuit claiming the TSA has seized cash from travelers — even when carrying cash domestically is legal. The eternal culture war: boneless wings — wings, nuggets, or a crime against language? Plus kitchen gear, dull knives, gross sponges, and why some people keep dishware like it’s a family heirloom from Chernobyl. Also: Tony gets real about sleep, CPAPs, and why a vending machine grilled cheese might be the last thing you eat before “your ashes are blowing in the wind.” Find the show, the reviews, and everything EDS at EatDrinkSmokeShow.com, and don’t forget to subscribe on YouTube — just search Eat, Drink, Smoke. Ever argued over what makes a voice truly unique? We go all-in on that question and discover why “unmistakable” beats “perfect” almost every time. From Cher and Sinatra to Tom Waits, Stevie Nicks, and Bob Dylan, we debate tone, phrasing, range, and the magic test: can you spot them in one note?We kick off with a left-field warm-up on Texas Roadhouse—founder geography, 34-degree cutting rooms, 36-degree beer, fresh-daily bread, and how grassroots roll drops double as smart local marketing. Then it's a tight country news sweep: Ella Langley's triple-chart moment, Jason Aldean's milestone perspective against legacy greats, the Country Music Hall of Fame's American Currents signal, the Braves Country Fest lineup, new drops from Luke Combs to Charlie Crockett, a classic country tour package, and a Lee Brice single stirring up “country nowadays” debate. The throughline is clear: country's center is widening and listeners are picking winners across lanes. Our chart check balances mainstream and indie, spotlighting why a hold at number three means something different than a quick climb to one, and how pop-country crossovers, storytelling, and rock edges share the same field. Then a rapid-fire trivia duel (rock and country) transforms fun facts into a map of genre evolution—Zeppelin's first name, Master of Puppets in 1986, who ripped the Beat It solo, Opry induction stats, Chris Gaines, and more. The mailbag brings the sharpest industry insights. Can an artist be “outlaw” with label money? What's smarter today: 20-track albums or a disciplined singles drip? Is vinyl a real revenue lane or a nostalgia-forward merch play? Who owns the masters when singers go solo—and what can they do about it? On this week's Extra Serving, NRN editor in chief Sam Oches and executive editor Alicia Kelso discuss the latest restaurant industry news, including Burger King's president's invitation to guests to give him a call, Wingstop's first negative sales year in two decades, and why limited-time offers don't seem to work quite as well as they used to. First up is Burger King, which is enjoying some sales momentum as it doubles down on its Whopper platform. President Tom Curtis announced that he would spend four hours a day responding to texts and calls from customers on a dedicated line, demonstrating the chain's commitment to improving around guest feedback. Sam and Alicia discuss the ambitious plan, which has earned positive feedback from around the industry and could further fuel Burger King's momentum. Next up is burger competitor Jack in the Box, which had yet another bad quarter, with same-store sales declining 6.7%. Why is this value chain struggling so mightily even when consumers are looking for budget-conscious offerings? Sam and Alicia dig into the chain's woes, which could include its limited-time offer strategy. In fact, according to Alicia's recent reporting, LTOs may not be working like they used to for restaurant chains. She and Sam unpack why that could be. Next they talk about Wingstop, which saw its same-store sales decline 3.3% in 2025 — its first such decline in 20 years. Alicia explains the steps the company plans to take to reverse fortunes in 2026, including roll out of its Smart Kitchen operation, which helps cut service times. Finally, they talk about two casual-dining heavyweights that are slogging through a softer consumer environment: Texas Roadhouse and The Cheesecake Factory. While Texas Roadhouse's sales were up last quarter, its profitability was down as the company contends with historic beef prices. Meanwhile, The Cheesecake Factory saw its sales comps decline by 2.2%. Is there anything to learn about the full-service category in this news? Sam and Alicia break it down. For more on these stories: Burger King president Tom Curtis to take calls from customersWingstop eyes growth despite another quarter of same-store sales declineTexas Roadhouse continues to navigate high beef costs

91 MPH, Earned Not Given: Inside the PG Main Event Showcase In this deeply personal episode, host Deven Morgan pulls back the curtain on his son Danny's first-ever showcase—the Perfect Game Main Event in Fort Myers. What follows is a ground-level breakdown of the entire experience: battling illness on the trip, navigating a 3 a.m. Pacific wake-up, catcher throw-downs, 60-yard dash testing, and an eight-strikeout, three-inning pitching performance that topped out at 91 mph. But the real story is how they got there—shutting down in August, building the offseason ramp specifically around December competition readiness, and the "you can't win the race on this lap" mindset. Deven also offers a nuanced defense of Perfect Game, crediting their Pitch Smart compliance, rolled innings, and coach-pitch games designed to protect arms. The Christmas Tree Lot, the Steak, and Why the Hard Part Is What Makes It Worth It In this episode, Doc Danny Matta shares a story about a Christmas tree lot in Columbus, Georgia, the best steak he's ever eaten, and how hard work—and the struggle that comes with it—makes success and reward deeply meaningful. He connects that experience to clinic ownership, growth, and why building a successful cash practice is supposed to be hard. Quick Ask If this episode helps you reframe the hard parts of business, share it with another clinician who's grinding through a tough season—and tag @dannymattaPT so he can reshare it. Episode Summary Documentation pain: The #1 complaint on satisfaction surveys is clinicians hating to write notes. Clair AI scribe: Clair has been trained specifically for PTs to write high-quality notes, like a meticulous student in the corner capturing everything. Time freedom: Using Clair allows clinicians to reclaim hours of documentation time and spend it with family, hobbies, or simply resting. Danny's background: Staff PT, active duty military PT, cash practice founder, seller, and founder of PT Biz, helping 1,000+ clinicians build cash practices. The Christmas tree lot job: As a teenager in Columbus, GA, Danny and his brother took a sketchy, hard manual-labor job at a Christmas tree lot near Fort Benning. Uncertain payoff: The owner warned them they'd only get paid if they worked hard—and not until the end of the season. Hard work in the cold: Long days hauling trees, sawing, tying them to cars, all while smelling Texas Roadhouse across the street they couldn't yet afford. Finally getting paid: On the last day, the owner pulled out a wad of cash, paid them what he owed, and even gave them a bonus for working hard. The greatest steak ever: They walked across the street to Texas Roadhouse, ordered the most expensive steak, and it remains the best steak Danny's ever had—because of what it represented. Meaning through struggle: The steak wasn't special because of the restaurant; it was special because of the work it took to earn it. Business parallel: The hard parts of clinic ownership—slow growth, cash stress, buildouts, staffing—are what make the wins meaningful. Normalizing struggle: Building a successful clinic that changes your life and your family's life should not be easy. Celebrate wins: Most entrepreneurs power past achievements without celebrating; Danny argues you need to mark the "steak moments." Reframing frustration: Instead of "Why is this so hard?" shift to "It's supposed to be hard—and that's why it will feel incredible when it works." Lessons & Takeaways Hard work makes reward meaningful: Wins feel better when they're earned through discomfort, sacrifice, and persistence. You need contrast: Without the "shitty stuff," victories don't stand out—you need struggle to appreciate success. Business is not meant to be easy: A clinic that creates time and financial freedom will demand hard things from you. Struggle is not a sign you're failing: It's a sign you're doing something significant and transformative. School and business are similar: Graduation and growth feel good precisely because the journey is challenging. Positive reinforcement matters: Celebrating wins keeps you moving through the next tough stretch. Mindset & Motivation Embrace the hard: Instead of resenting the grind, accept that it's the price of a different life. You're not broken: Being tired, stretched, and challenged doesn't mean you picked the wrong path. Remember what's at stake: A successful clinic can change your family's finances, your time, and your identity. Reframe the question: Move from "Why is this so hard?" to "Who am I becoming because I'm doing hard things?" Use the steak moment: Have a tangible reward in mind—your version of Texas Roadhouse—to look forward to after big milestones. Pro Tips for Clinic Owners Automate documentation: Use Clair to remove hours of note writing and free up time for life outside the clinic. Define your "steak": Choose a specific reward (trip, dinner, purchase) you'll give yourself after a big business milestone. Track your wins: Keep a running list of milestones reached so you can look back and see your progress. Expect friction: When something feels hard, remind yourself: "This is exactly what I signed up for." Build celebration into your plan: Schedule a pause to celebrate when you hit revenue, hire, or space goals. Notable Quotes "If you don't have the shitty stuff, then it doesn't feel very good whenever you get the good stuff." "Why would something that changes your life be easy?" "Anything meaningful—like a successful clinic—should be hard." "If you can just reframe from 'Why is this hard?' to 'This is supposed to be hard,' it changes everything." "The hard part is what makes the win feel like the greatest steak you've ever had." Action Items Identify one current "hard thing" in your business and consciously reframe it as part of what makes your future success meaningful. Pick a specific reward you'll give yourself when you hit your next major milestone. Write down three big wins you've already earned and how hard you worked for them. Consider trying Clair for a 7-day free trial to reclaim documentation time. Share this story with a spouse, partner, or friend so they understand why you're pushing through the hard season. FBI Missteps & The Missing Clothes: The Cold Case of Sebastian Rogers True Crimers, welcome back to Break the Case. In this deep-dive, Jennifer Coffindaffer takes us inside the heartbreaking and still-unsolved disappearance of Sebastian Rogers, the 15-year-old from Hendersonville, Tennessee, whose case has gone cold — but not closed. We break down the FBI's newly released statement, including the errors that immediately raised red flags: wrong dates, wrong age, and shifting details about what Sebastian was last seen wearing. Was it a sweatshirt? A shirt with Star Wars, Minecraft, or Halloween graphics? Sweatpants or Adidas track pants? Even the smallest contradictions matter in a case where the truth has been so elusive. Jennifer also dissects the “bang vs. thud” discrepancy, the dashcam evidence from Katie Proudfoot's car, the controversy over why 911 wasn't called, and why phrases like “almost every home searched” simply aren't good enough. We revisit the flashlight theory, the “green hoodie” person at Texas Roadhouse, and how the FBI clarified — and corrected — some of the case's most persistent rumors. This isn't just about a missing teen. It's about accountability, transparency, and keeping Sebastian's name alive when the headlines have faded. With insights from former FBI Special Agent Jennifer Coffindaffer, we examine whether this investigation has been thorough — or whether critical mistakes may have cost precious time and clarity. Stay with us as we push past the inconsistencies, question the official narrative, and continue demanding answers for Sebastian. Topics Covered: FBI mistakes in public releases Conflicting accounts of Sebastian's last clothing The “bang” heard the night before he vanished Dashcam footage & neighborhood search limitations Why the “green hoodie” theory collapsed The missing flashlight detail and what it really means Why Sebastian's case remains cold — not closed Sebastian deserves the truth. And so do we.
