Creston shares a story from his law enforcement days: two patrol cars getting slammed while they were already working a wreck on I-20 coming into Clinton after water pooled at the bottom of the hill near Norwell Road. Then the internet's latest racial hoax. A post claimed a secret Facebook group of 400,000 Texas Roadhouse and Logan's Roadhouse employees has been targeting Black customers' food since George Floyd — spitting in it, not washing hands, using a “blind spot” in the kitchen. Clay calls complete shenanigans. The employee numbers don't add up. Texas Roadhouse employs around 101,000 people total. Logan's is a fraction of that. Videos of people losing their minds over the rumor get played, including one woman having an allergic reaction she now “knows” was the food, and an uncensored rant leaping from honey butter biscuits to lynching in broad daylight and only supporting Black-owned restaurants. Clay draws a hard line: when he says “culture,” he is not talking about every Black person. He is talking about the loud, no-tipping, send-it-back-after-eating-half, waste-food-at-the-buffet, entitlement crowd that restaurant workers of every race dread. Same people who ruined free birthday dinners at places like Berry's. Context matters. Most kitchen staff at these restaurants are Black. The rumor was rage bait that a lot of accounts ran with anyway. Jelly Roll goes on Jimmy Kimmel and doubles down on the Trump shots, thanks Rosie O'Donnell, and acts like nobody should be surprised a guy named after a pastry has opinions. Clay isn't buying the “I don't treat myself with reverence so why should I treat the president that way” routine from someone who spent years selling a redemption story and staying out of politics. On this week's Extra Serving, NRN editor in chief Sam Oches and executive editor Alicia Kelso discuss the latest restaurant industry news, including Salad and Go closing all of its restaurants and major chains reporting their latest quarterly earnings, from McDonald's and Burger King to Wendy's, Texas Roadhouse, Bloomin' Brands, Dine Brands, Sweetgreen, and more. First up is the news that Salad and Go had closed all 70 or so of its remaining restaurants while simultaneously filing for Ch. 11 bankruptcy protection. The sudden closure comes just a few years after Salad and Go sold to Volt Investment Holdings and aggressively pursued growth with its value-oriented drive-thru salad concept. Sam and Alicia discuss what went wrong for Salad and Go and what it suggests about other emerging chains pursuing growth. Next they tackle a very busy week of restaurants earnings, starting with chains that boasted positive sales. That included Texas Roadhouse and Bloomin' Brands — both of which are proving that consumers are seeking value in the casual steakhouse experience — as well as IHOP, First Watch, Dutch Bros, and El Pollo Loco. Then they shift their focus to chains that had only a so-so quarter, particularly McDonald's and Applebee's. McDonald's quarter especially was out of character — same-store sales only rose by 0.8% — and the company acknowledged that its marketing initiatives were not executed to their expectation. The result led to McDonald's USA president Joe Erlinger stepping down and COO Skye Anderson promoted to the position. Next up, Sam and Alicia dig into the chains that had particularly bad quarters: Popeyes, Portillo's, Papa Johns, Wendy's, and Sweetgreen. Wendy's especially had a brutal quarter, with traffic dropping 12.5%, while Papa Johns continued a streak of negative sales that led to the chain shaking up its marketing leadership. Why are these brands struggling so much? And what should they do to turn things around?
