In this latest podcast I interviewed my husband Greg who in his early twenties was a minor league baseball player for three and a half years as a professional athlete, then became a retiring athlete. In our casual conversation we had discovered that there are similar feelings, experiences and mindsets that both people trying to transition to a new career and retiring professional athletes experience. I thought you could learn from Greg's experiences moving from a professional athletic career to a career in business. There were six feelings that Greg identified that he experienced over the years that seem to easily relate to building our business lives. We're going to first briefly talk about the six feelings then develop six principles of how to address each of those feelings in our lives and mindsets. I'm part of the Out of Nowhere podcast with Danny Woodhead and Matt Slauson. Both were small-town Nebraska kids who made it to the NFL and had 10-year careers. But the cool thing is they are better humans, and their identity isn't tied to their NFL careers. You should know I'm fascinated with people's journeys, and I've learned so much from them. I will share some short segments that are great teaching moments no matter where we are in life. Being a professional athlete, the worst moments are injuries. Their bodies are everything. I asked the men how they dealt with injuries. Some cool lessons we can learn when things don't go our way. Life transitions occur in every area of life, but one of the areas that is front and center in the public eye is the life transition that occurs for a professional athlete. Athletics is a performance field and professionals are usually slightly more coordinated than the general population. It's a tough transition when the athletic body doesn't do what it used to do. Most of us working in other areas don't aspire to push our body in ways and to levels that professional athletes do. Whether or not an athlete, we will cover three areas here that will hopefully help you with your life transitions. Similar to the last stage of labor for a new mother, the transition stage is the most painful. But it's also the most rewarding with the result of bringing a new life out to the world. We will cover three areas to help with life transitions: mindsets, workarounds and consistency. Full article here: https://goalsforyourlife.com/blog/life-transitions

“Never rob a man of his pain or his gold because both will serve him equally well.”Super Bowl champion Aaron Taylor reflects on a journey to emotional freedom that continues far beyond his accomplished career in the NFL. For every feeling he'd been pushing away, Aaron came to find that “on the other side is infinite possibility.”Join Aaron, Brett, and Joe as they talk about performance anxiety, feelings in the locker room, and how faith affects decision-making. They touch on the nature of accomplishment, how to raise children who hear their own voices of approval, and the value of having our identity shattered to pieces. Aaron shares a tearful moment with his absent father that produced an unexpected gem of gratitude. The episode closes with the story of a critical choice Aaron made at age 15 that changed his life.“At the end of the day it doesn't matter what we do, it's about who and what we become in that process.”Links and references from the episode:Mentalhealthbestpractices.comCheck back in 16 years for a follow-up interview with feedback from Aaron on the referenced conversation with his son.About Aaron:CBS Sports Analyst and College Football Hall of Fame inductee, Aaron Taylor, has a "larger than life" personality, but its roots may surprise you: the former Super Bowl Champion credits his success to the principles of Gratitude, Service, and Teamwork.Instilled from an early age, these principles became the inspiring foundation for the creation of college football's only non-individual award, the Joe Moore Award, annually recognizing the Most Outstanding Offensive Line Unit in College Football. Through the Joe Moore Award, Aaron set out to not only preserve the legacy of his coach but also to shift the focus from a “Hey, look at me!” mentality to a culture of teamwork, of putting the greater good above ourselves in society at large.Aaron was a decorated offensive lineman at the University of Notre Dame from 1990-1993, earning unanimous All-American honors both his junior and senior years. In his final season in South Bend, he won the prestigious Lombardi Award, annually given to the best interior lineman in the country. In an incredible culmination of his childhood dream, Aaron was drafted by the Green Bay Packers in the first round of the 1994 NFL Draft and was a member of the Packers' Super Bowl XXXI championship team. After a two-year stint with the San Diego Chargers, Aaron was forced to retire due to injuries after the 1999 season.Off the field, Aaron is a moving and inspirational speaker. His candid approach and sense of humor make him an effective storyteller who is able to weave a powerful message of resilience, perseverance, and the importance of having a championship mindset. Behind the winning smile and accolades, Aaron finds meaning and feels “most alive” when being of service or bringing value to others. Shortly after retiring from the NFL, Aaron established the Aaron Taylor Impact Fund and recently co-founded The Foundation for Teamwork, dedicated to fostering the most essential aspect of all societal endeavors: Teamwork.Aaron currently resides in Southern California and New York with his wife and three children.

Key Points, Top Takeaways and Memorable Quotes “So much of that relates with my mom is because I had watched her grow with me as I was growing up doing everything. I didn't know there were options of asking for help, you know, asking other people to, it just didn't occur to me because I had never seen that. My mom was like, ‘you figure it out, you do it yourself, whatever you need to do, you figure out how to do it.'” 6:17“It was a blessing and a curse, they say because I learned how to, like I always had a bright smile. And often it was honest and genuine and authentic like I'm happy, but I also learned how to use that to cover up everything that was hurting.” 10:33“I had to work so you just make it work. I didn't consciously do it, but I know unconsciously I just went with then I won't feel anything emotionally because there's no room or time to feel anything. And I just have to do my day and get through my day and this is how it is. And I become very strict, very regimented, very focused, and very driven. And driven because it was so much about ‘Get out of poverty.' That was the mindset.” 16:40“So much of the work I do now talks about how much it's a coping mechanism. And how much I learned to cope with what was going on in my home growing up. Yes there's survival, yes there's a need for discipline growing up, but there's also an element where it's also very comfortable to be very busy and to have a full schedule and to not have time to feel, or to think or to anything other than this what I do and then check the box off in the course of the day.” 21:18“What I realized is, in order for me to do that, I had to go back to my parents and revisist all those parenting things I didn't like and finally let go of feeling like there was any blame, or shame, or anger, anger was a big one for me, rage. Going back and revisiting all those to understand what happened.” 24:22“You know, that answer has changed over the last few years because now, where I'm sitting, the only thing I would say to my younger self is ‘Be patient, you'll see how it all works out and it's going to be ok.' It's like if I had heard that, there's something about planting the seed of hope that I could have carried with me to say ok, it's the hard part, but it's going to be ok.” 28:16“To this day I still feel like sometimes that's when I'm fighting with God, when I'm wrestling, I just come back down to ok, well I may not know who you are, and I may not trust you and I may not even like you, but this life force is real, it's tangible, it's real, I can feel it, i saw it, I see it, and that's what I always come back to and refine my faith from that place.” 37:57“Cuz that was the hardest thing I struggled with. For me, I thought well God was indifferent. I realized, oh, I felt like God was indifferent, but that was, now I look back at my mom's history, and my dad's history, and through story I'm like, oh, God was there. Both of my parents made choices that were not in alignment with God and that energy and what they were supposed to do.” 39:53“Watching her and realizing my role as a parent is just to teach her the skills the best that I can but I have to let her stumble and I have to let her feel uncomfortable to the point where that's what gives her those boundaries.” 51:42 Guest Bio Dr. Natacha Nelson is known for her work as a Life Doctor; Speaker, Author, Entrepreneur & creator of The Untamed Heart System and events. April and I talked about the power of storytelling. How your story is your message to bring people into your world and much much more. April! I'm a Storyteller, and a firm believer that everyone has a story. I am also a Visibility and Media Specialist, and after more than 30 years as a journalist, producer, and writer, I now work with people and brands to help them tell their story in a more authentic way. One of my favorite components of storytelling is piecing the puzzle together to craft a compelling, emotional and meaningful story that touches others. No matter what the business is, what the product is, what the service is — the heart of people is always what matters! I have a 25+ year career as a TV Journalist, Video Producer, Writer and Speaker; I know the value of stories.... and I know how to help YOU make sense of yours. I've interviewed future Presidents, Fortune 500 CEO's, Professional Athletes, and Millionaires... and guess what? Your Story is equally as exciting as theirs. You just need to learn how to tell it, and connect it properly to your message & mission. (there is a connection, I promise!) I've never walked away from an interview without a story to share. It's fascinating to me to uncover someone's uniqueness.... and to help them see it, too! I love this work so much because it lights me up and feeds my insatiable curiosity. When you share your story, you can effectively attract an audience, which can help you grow your business, expand your reach, build a platform, have a larger impact in the world.... when you do this, you shine a LIGHT. My passion created the LIGHTbeamers Community on Facebook to give women (and men, too!) a private and safe space to have open and honest conversations about life, business, personal growth, and spirituality. I also launched my podcast titled The Inside Story Podcast, where I take you behind the curtain of the biggest success stories of entrepreneurs, thought leaders, and change makers.... the men & women who have walked through fire and come out on the other side brighter. Stories that help build connections, community, and collaboration.
