Mathew Nelson - Executive Director, Arizona Trail Thankful to connect with Matt recently. I reached out to him because I thought he would be a great person to connect the complexities that go into allowing all of us outdoor enthusiasts, our spaces and places to do the things we love. We go over a bit of his background and how he found his way yo Arizona, and to the position of Executive Director, what that entails, the complexity of maintaining and finishing the Arizona Trail. Where funding for the AZ trail comes from, how it’s up kept, plans for the future, constant work that needs to be done, etc. We also cover a bit if where funding at the national level comes from for public lands like National forests, wilderness areas, National parks, state trust lands, native/reservation land, private lands - how important it is to understand this and contribute in your own way, not taking things for grated. Matt has been the Executive Director since 2012, written hundreds of articles on it, wrote the book complete guide to the trail, among many other roles as Executive Director. He’s also driving around in a Toyota Tacoma ! Which was donated by the Valley Toyota Dealers, so shoutout to those folks helping support and connect all types of outdoor recreation activities. Below you’ll find the links to the podcast/interview - but also please dive into the info regarding public lands and where funding comes from, be informed, supporting of keeping them available for years and decades to come, and stay involved. Caught up local musician, Rob Riccardo We chatted about his joinery and how he’s using is voice, literally and figuratively, through music to share his ability to express those experiences we all go through. We touch on his dabble into endurance running, growing up on the east coast, surfing, finding music, his yoga and spiritual journey, moving to Arizona with his wife, his encounter with his spirit animal - mountain lion - and a lot more. I’m really happy to have connected with Rob. Really wonderful what he’s doing here, and I hope you can find some time to listen to some of the songs he’s already produced. Or, better yet, see him out at a show - he’s got some events here in Phoenix *(check his website for schedule, as I know one of the days is sold out). Colin Strickland Also able to connect with Colin Strickland while out in California for the BWR Survival camp. As with Pete, and the burgeoning alternative racing scene (gravel, fixed gear, etc events) there is much to hear and see about what Colin is up to, and has accomplished. As well as the different path taken to get there. We chat a bit of his background growing up, his education, work life, as well his long history on the bike and now starting to carve out the time for bikes. Paving his own way and connecting with sponsors that truly support him financially to do the work and create the story he’s telling. Also, with his degree in environmental sciences, we discuss this further and using the bike for change. In addition, I ask him just what story he’d like to tell with the spotlight and focus upon him now. Follow Colin and his year in the links below. Or, simply google him - and you’ll find plenty
Peter Stetina Hey!! Was lucky enough to connect with Pete Stetina while out in California for the BWR Survival camp. We sat down and spoke about his career a bit, his switch up to take advantage and make a mark in the privateer arena - doing gravel, mountain, and road events - in addition to heading up his own event, Stetina’s Paydirt. You’ll be able to find more info on Pete with his social media below. Quite a bit of interview online and in pods like this, plus he’s getting great backing from his sponsors and doing little project with them as well. One thing that generally gets overlooked and glossed over, is his rehabilitation from his crash in 2015. This is where I am thankful Pete saw what I’m trying to do with these. Helping understand just what it takes do do things well and set oneself up for the best possible outcome. https://www.instagram.com/pstetina/ https://www.stetinaspaydirt.com https://mobile.twitter.com/peterstetina https://www.strava.com/pros/pstetina Image credit : Dan Munson - www.dmunsonphoto.com/
Travis McCabe- well here you have it. Travis and I sat down to catch up, reminiscing about our time together on and off the bike, what he’s been learning and applying to constantly be at the top of the sport. In addition, as you all may know by now - we talk about his signing to the WorldTour with Israel Cycling Academy. So happy and proud of what he’s done, and for him to have a chance to put it all together with ICA. Also, super stoked as he’ll be on Factor Bikes, as they are the official sponsor for team. Can’t wait to see what he gets into, and to follow along, and maybe link up for some more training in the near future
Quinn Simmons - Junior World Road Race Champion, Trek-Segafredo by Eric D. Marcotte, D.C.
Michael Creed This was really fun to catch up with mike and reminisce a bit. I love sharing this conversation to those who enjoy cycling and to give some insight into the experience and wisdom that Mike has. For me, I see his gift of being able to get the most out of his rider and those around him. Very thankful for him to allow us the opportunity we have had and then help facilitate that for others as well. We speak about his career, some insight on how he was and what was driving him to be his best. Also, what drove him onto the ground - and o pose the question, how do you get across to a young Mike - knowing that state of mind he was in at the time. We go over our time with SmartStop a bit, as well as into his directing of the USA Paralympic team - and onto currently the AeVolo development crew. A bit on the state of cycling in the USA, social media and how it has changed the sport/our lives, attaining sponsorships, the year ahead of the AeVolo team - among other wide ranging topics. I quite enjoyed this one. Good to catch up and see Caitlin and Charlie (you’ll hear Charlie a few times throughout
Lindsay Goldman Fantastic convo with Lindsay Goldman, currently the Director of Membership at USA Cycling, professional cyclist and Co-Owner/general manager for Hagens-Berman Supermint team, mother, wife, and working on top of all this at the same time!, which is one of the topics we delve into a little, how to make that all happen, and why it’s needed a a female cyclist with lesser opportunities and pay. We also go over how she found the bike, her live for it, finding her way and place in that professional peloton. To seeing first hand how fleeting and shirt lived some of the opportunity/teams can be in cycling. And then taking it on herself in starting a team up. We discuss the never ending search for support and sponsors, the challenges, and what’s driving her to try so hard. Of course we cover motherhood huge transition, trying to embrace the change and challenges if it that lead to seeing her daughter grow and develop. Then we talk about her position at USA Cycling, Director of Membership. What’s that means, how she’s looking to draw upon her previous experience to help grow, and her stick to it attitude to be successful. Thankful to connect with her, as it was a busy time at USA Cycling as I was passing through. Dotsie Bausch Oh my goodness, this interview is far, far overdue. This was one of the first I had done, and it was over the phone. Shortly after Dotsie and I connected, one of my favorite podcasts to check in on, Rich Rill was able to sit down with her - and in my opinion, have the space and place to hit the points I’d like to - so I’ll link to that below, as it’s just a little deeper on the topics i wanted to dive into, and really well done. Rich Roll Podcast : ( apple.co/32U2WDN apple.co/32U2WDN ) OEM Sessions Apple podcast : ( SoundCloud : ( Since then, I’ve not done any interviews on the phone, as it was apparent to me that the one-on-one is far superior, allowing for the trust and space to open up and share. That said, recently the movie The Game Changers came out. Where Dotsie is one of the featured athletes/stories. (http://gamechangersmovie.com), Directed by Academy Award winner Louie Psihoyos and executive produced by Oscar winner James Cameron, And quickly became the #1 downloaded film of all time on iTunes. Wether you tune into the interview I did, or with Rich Roll - you’ll Learn she’s had quite the story and is an incredible inspiration to overcome eating disorders and ultimately attempting suicide. Which has her rock bottom finding the bucycle. Which turns into the outlet to pick her back up. Taking the power from doing so, and moving forward to help others with that experience. We get into her background before cycling and into the Olympics - and where she’s at now, goals for the future- You can find her TEDx talk here “Olympic Level Compassion” ( https://youtu.be/Dgofa-v4MA4 ) , you can watch the documentary “Personal Gold” about the USA Cycling track team at the 2012 Olympics here ( http://bit.ly/2q0NgzI ) When we spoke, it was late 2017/early 2018 - and we spoke of this campaign “Switch4Good” shortly after the commercial came out featuring six Olympians highlighting performances at the highest level sans diary/animal products ( https://Switch4Good.org. ) in addition, if you like podcasts- she hosts one under the same title with Alexandra Paul - really sifting through what it is, and takes to be plant based. Q Martin. How would you describe a rose to a blind person? First, I’d classify Q Martin, as a photographer and filmmaker of the outdoor adventure/activism/social justice variety. A jack of many trades using his background growing up in Alaska, falling in love with climbing, and overlapping them with a keen eye behind the lens. He’s living life where his passions each day to share stories and educate on environmental / social justice issues while enjoying the outdoors, including with some of the world’s elite athletes in the most amazing places across the world. I take inspiration in him being able to do that, And would love to be doing the same. We get into his background as a child growing up in Alaska. His move to Flagstaff, AZ, training under his grandfather in martial arts, how he found climbing, photography, filmmaking, using his passions/gifts as a tool for awareness and change. We share the same paradigm of preventions and awareness, and he has the hopes that what he’s sharing can get people inspired and working in the direction to ensure these incredible place and lands for the future. I’m putting up this conversation I had with triathlon Canada coach, Jono Hall. If you’ve followed these convos you know he was one of the first ones I did a year and a half ago. We reconnected earlier this year while he was here in Scottsdale. Now in Lausanne, France for World Triathlon grand final this weekend. I’ve watched as his athletes steadily perform, grow, and learn throughout this season. Including triathlon Canada’sTyler Mislawchuk, a few weeks back taking the win at the Tokyo Olympic test event. (In addition to his successes early and consistency in the season). This weekend should be good for that ram and Jono’s athletes. In our conversation we cover the ever present, and seemingly never changing environment of training on the roads as a Cyclist. One topic that I really enjoyed was our discussion on what is health. How he now feels that at his highest level as an atheist, he can now look back and say it wasn’t healthy and long term sustainable. A concept and paradigm I agree with. Also, he discusses what it’s like to bring in athletes into his program who were only ever exposed to a certain way of things. How they were amazed at what else was and is available, and you can have fun pausing yourself. Again, another topic I really quite enjoyed to discuss - as it’s something I regularly see. A paradigm of having a badge of honor to push thrift through injuries, to not ask for help, and more better mentality (hows that working out for you/your health? Or everyone before and after doing the same
Privileged to have had the chance to get to know my Jason Sani over the last 6 months or so. He wears many hats including being a culinary nutritionist, trainer, and speaker, in addition to being a model and an overall great person. Through his own personal joinery and learning, he continues to share and inspire others to lead a balanced and healthy lifestyle. You’ll hear in this interview (and if you take the time to watch our Workouts) he’s passionate and has a vibrant desire to learn. You’ll hear his background and many good helpful tips that can help you identify or navigate from his experience. Here’s a great quote/perspective from Jason: “When you can get in tune with your body, you can wake it up and realize that you have been tolerating feeling “ok” for too long. You have the ability redefine what normal feels like. You have the ability to feel better in every way, all of the time” The idea behind the workout video is simple; I go and do his workout and be humbled, he comes and goes for a ride with me, and the same. In addition, we can share and appreciate each other’s hard work, ability, and capacity at what we spend our time doing. Sharing insight along the way about being optimal and high performance, what it takes to support and achieve it, as well as what can get off track. Last, we can help raise awareness of the capacity of endurance athletes that use the roads as a place to train to be their best. (The Cyclist, triathlete, runner, etc doesn’t need to be reminded that the roads should be safe - rather educating and whining other groups that ride past may help with appreciation for what we are doing.) Here’s a convo with Kirsten Kasper, as we crossed paths earlier this year here in Scottsdale, AZ. She’s a part of the USA Triathlon’s National Team and races on the World Triathlon Series tour. (Coached by Jono Hall- who, you may recall, I sat down with last year - and have caught up with since that time (stay tuned for that one)). She burst onto the triathlon scene and made a huge impact. Have a go at the results in the last few years. What a trajectory to that top end of the results list!! http://www.kirstenkaspertri.com/results.html In this convo, we get into how she got started, what’s motivating her, and her upcoming goals - like the WTS and Olympics in 2020. (Also what it’s like training on the roads needing other road users to allow her and her teammates to do so, so she can be her best). As we talk in the convo, she’s been doing a slower build up then year (why making sure the foundation one competes on is solid and ready to go) and has recently toed the line. And in doing so, is back to where she left off - right at the pointy end of the races. Below you’ll find the links to her Website and social media platforms where you can follow along and support her as she makes a run for it. http://www.kirstenkaspertri.com https://mobile.twitter.com/KirstenKasper https://www.instagram.com/kirstenkasper/ https://www.facebook.com/kirsten.kasper.79

She’s got a wealth of knowledge and resources on her website, as well as her other social media platforms. This is part 2 of 2 interview with The Cyclist Lawyer, Megan Hottman. In this interview we talk a hint what’s best to do and have in place in the unfortunate case you, or someone you know is struck by a negligent driver. She and her law office were so critical in helping me navigate the mess that happens following. They helped ensure I do my job in focusing on rehabilitation and returning best I can. Her resources on her website are invaluable to know an learn. I would not take the time and go out of my way to suggest this, if I didn’t know how important this knowledge will be for you. Please set aside time to look further into it. And be the change you want to see out one your roads and in your community. Using Megan as a great example of how that is done. This conversation with Rukmini "Ruksi" Poddar was really special. We met a few years back, and I've been inspired by what she is doing and how she serves others with her gifts. We go over a bit of her creative journey, one of her gifts to illustrate, her journaling,100 day challenges, and how they all came together in a way she was able to help work through emotions and experiences for herself. Now she uses that same means to serve others. She is so sweet and was so great to get to hear a bit more of the process, but also more about her, and how it all came about. What's most personal is most universal, and Ruksi has a unique ability to help others understand this and give some structure to emotions and experiences so succinctly. Have a look at her work with the links below (and support her by getting her really sweet book, for yourself or a loved one)- and share with others that you may feel could benefit from what she does. Such a great time connecting with Rob Krar - ultra runner extraordinaire ! Such an amazing story - so many stories really!! Enjoy this conversation with him, as we go over so much of his background, including the triumphs and tribulations - rehabilitation for injuries and dealing with depression. Overcoming that to inspire, and how he makes it through that dark place while running these ultra distance events, and in life!!
Sierra is from Arizona, and started climbing at a really young age. She has been competing professionally for a decade, and was a junior National Champion and been competing on the World Cup Circuit since 2010 She graduated from Arizona State University with a degree in marketing. We get into some of he training that is involved to be competitive at the level she is at, as well as some injuries she's endured along the way. What she learned that contributed to them, how she's managed to stay away from that and what's in place to do so. She's done a phenomenal job through her career at staying involved with her fans and social media presence. Through this and her sponsors, it affords her the opportunity to live a great life traveling the world competing and doing what she loves full-time. Thankful she was able to take some time out to sit down and share her story. Instagram.com/sierrablaircoyl Facebook.com/sierrabc Twitter.com/sierrablaircoyl www.sierrabc.com
Erin Feser, MS - she's the Director of Education at Noraxon USA. And Doctoral Student at Auckland University of Technology. Noraxon USA is essentially evidenced base biomechanics company. They have tools like EMG, motion and force technology to help integrate into practice to help enhance training or treatment for athletes or patients. These tools help assess movement patterns and recruitment - through using the EMG, motion and force technology metrics - and then can help the clinician treat at train athletes/patients to full potential. https://www.noraxon.com A good overview of what they offer and averrable here: video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hce5vOg8m4Q Biofeedback https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yWOKYM185GI Running assessment example: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ypPm-7QL-lk Link to events webpage = www.noraxon.com/events/ This episode speaking Erin Feser, the Director of education - (her background of teaching at ASU in kinesiology program, where she also oversaw biomechanics curriculum, and is now adjunct faculty mainly with research and curriculum ) - we really get into how these tools and technology can be used for healthcare providers, and those of us who are looking for peak performance, but also identifying any imbalances, weaknesses, and injury prevention. You'll get introduced to the Noraxon technology and see how it can be, and already is getting used to help athletes and individuals. really hope to continue to see how this can be applied here, and being involved in part of that.
Today I connected with Ryan Stoll. He’s the Director of Research Innovation and Diffusion, at The Courage Lab. Along with Doctoral Candidate in Clinical Psychology (ABD), at Arizona State University. We talk about his research, his role, and his company, Obeo Well Being, LLC. His passions on getting tools and programs to those in places of service, like teachers. Getting them the tools necessary to help their students navigate fear and anxiety. I really enjoyed this one, and am happy to share his and Dr. Pina’s story. But also happy because it’s great to know there are people out there doing good things for others. The passion is contagious and really am happy to be around that. These two, and the work they and their team is doing, reminds me so much of Mr. Rogers, from Mr. Rogers Neighborhood. You all probably recall this show. We dive into that with Coach Ben, and what he’s got set up here in Flagstaff, AZ. We also going over his background a bit in running, collegiate and professional running, owing and managing a running store (and how he scored the cash to start that up) - promoting and putting on events - and ultimately how he found hisnway to Flagstaff - He's a self starter and quick learner. He also applies what he sees is working and successful, we touch on that as well as what the future goals are and looks like for his athletes. Also, we had someone - who, let’s say doesn’t have a home and maybe had too much to drink by noon - butt in on our conversation. - I’ve left it in, as I felt re-listening that it’s a great reminder for us to see how lucky we are to have these opportunites to look for that edge in getting ourselves to be the best in competition, or managing and maintingin our health a head of time - for the long haul. and that we should use those opportunities and do good with them. Here is a conversation with Alison "Ali" Tetrick I had recently. We cover all sorts of topics throughout this one, including her background in sports, schooling, balancing professional cycling and a career. In addition, we cover the topic of recovering and navigating a traumatic brain injury, and what she would do differently or the same. She is the Athlete representative for USA Cycling, which brought her to Knoxville, TN for the USA Cycling national Championships (in addition to competing in the Time trial event. We talk about her role there and how athletes can reach out to her to share their opinion and her be the voice to share those thoughts, or affect change. A lot to talk about, but we also talk about choosing health over performance and finding the fun of gravel racing and joy in the journey, and sharing it online in social media platforms, wether its the good or the bad. Hope you enjoy this, below are places you can follow and connect with her story and journey. As always thanks for listening and please share, comment, and stay tuned for some great ones down the pipeline. http://alisontetrick.com https://twitter.com/AMTetrick https://www.instagram.com/amtetrick/ https://www.facebook.com/alisonmtetrick https://www.strava.com/pros/188112
Simon Holzapfel, PhD at Arizona State University - PhD - Arizona State University, AZ, 2013-present Physical Activity and Nutrition Science MS - Eastern Kentucky University, KY, 2013 Exercise and Sports Science BA - Tusculum College, TN, 2011 Major: Sports Science; Minor: Coaching Areas of Expertise: Physical Activity Neurorehabilitation Dementia Healthy Lifestyles Exercise we spoke of textbook exercise physiology and science, metabolism and nutrition. we hopefully went over the basics that is taught and all protocols are based upon . as well as metablic testing that includes lactate threshold, VO2 max and substrate utilization. i should add that though he is a professor at ASU, what he’s sharing does not represent the university. always have to add those disclaimers these days. he’s a multi sport athlete himself, and we get into his background in what had him pursue this profession and research, as well as cover some of his races, training and events he’s completed. as always, there are a lot of areas we could go down a rabbit hole on with these topics, to further clarify things- wether they be hot topics or maybe misunderstood, to try and identify the benefits and shortcomings to certain approaches based on individuals - goals, health status, and a whole multitude of other factors.
