Elite climber Sasha DiGiulian shares her struggles and breakthroughs in Training, Nutrition, Tactics, and Mental Game - Sasha is one of the most accomplished climbers in the world. She has been Female Overall World Champion twice, the undefeated Pan-American Champion for a 10-year span, and 3-time US National Champion. Sasha was just the third woman in the World to climb the grade 9a (5.14d), and she has more than 30 First Ascents and First Female Ascents to her name. Some of her sport FFAs include 14d/9a Era Vella in Spain, 14c/8c+ Southern Smoke and Pure Imagination at the Red River Gorge, and she has onsighted multiple 5.14a / 8b+ routes. She is the first woman to free the north face of the Eiger by way of Magic Mushroom, a technical 2,000 foot climb; she was the first woman to free Bella Vista, a big wall in the Dolomites with difficulty up to 5.14b / 8c; and Sasha was the first woman and only the second human to free the Trilogy in the Canadian Rockies - three separate climbs that feature 5.14 pitches and total 9000 vertical feet. With all of those groundbreaking wins one might assume things come easy for Sasha but let me assure you that she is no stranger to struggle. Just a couple years ago Sasha underwent double hip surgery where doctors cut through muscle and bone to such an extreme she had to learn how to walk again… and that's just one example of many struggles that we explore in our chat. Sasha is as dedicated as they come, both on and off the wall, and is a tireless voice for climbing access, women's rights, and the environment. - CHAPTERS: Struggle: 0:16:20 Training: 0:19:23 Nutrition: 0:31:53 Tactics: 0:47:25 Mental Game: 0:56:12 Purpose: 1:07:16 - Follow along on Instagram @sashadigiulian and @thestruggleclimbingshow - BIG THANKS TO THE AMAZING SPONSORS OF THE STRUGGLE: PhysiVantage: the official climbing-nutrition sponsor of The Struggle. Welcome to another captivating episode on The Coach Podcast! In this episode, we dive into the realm of mastery, flow state, and equanimity with an extraordinary guest. Join us as we sit down with Bob Litwin, a renowned performance coach whose impressive achievements span from being a three-time tennis World Champion to ranking #1 in the world in senior tennis. In this enlightening conversation, we explore Bob's profound insights on coaching, growth catalysts, and the transformative power of rewriting our life stories. Discover how patience, persistence, and presence play pivotal roles in coaching and personal development, and unravel the concept of equanimity as a potent tool for maintaining balance amid life's challenges. Bob's wisdom shines through as he shares the process of changing our narratives, and we delve into his unique approach to coaching that centers on coaching the person first. Tune in to glean from Bob's wealth of experience, and be prepared to embark on a journey towards living your best story. This is an episode you won't want to miss! Here is a summary of the key points; 1.58: Worst coaching moment: Coaches remember that we work for the client, not the other way around. Listen to what they really want and who they want to be. Our job is to draw out of people who they aspire to be. 6.48: Best coaching moment: People come to coaching with an idea for what they want to work on but quite often this is the catalyst for growth. For example; "I want to wake up every morning of my life joyfully." 10.35: When do we need to stay patient and pull back with our clients? We move at the tempo of nature - patient yet very dynamic! Book recommendation: Tuesdays with Morrie: An Old Man, a Young Man, and Life's Greatest Lesson by Mitch Albom 13.06: Sliding Doors: Working at a country club and realizing that there was a lack of respect. He wrote down his old story and then shifted that story to focus on the positives, for example; I'm unhappy here. It's a good job but I'm unhappy. I like to be outside in the summer. I like the fact I'm playing tennis and people are coming to me and saying that this is the best part of my week. I realized that I was teaching life skills. 21.27: What Makes a Great Coach? Patience - We need to be patient and coach patience - we need to have a level of acceptance of where we are at in order to move forward. Persistence - This is one of the qualities that Bob has trained into his 'being' that he is most proud of. "No, you can't do that" is like a call to arms. There is no "no". You have to be persistent. Presence - Being fully present in whatever you are doing. "Loving the journey" (23.51) - People are really good at loving the journey until it's bumpy and it's not working out. It's in the difficult moments, that helps us to grow. 27.05: Equanimity - Evenness of mind especially under stress. Meditation has helped Bob learn the art of equanimity. Equanimity is when you are still experiencing things coming at you (thoughts, feelings) and there are reactions but as they come at you, they just go through you as if your brain is Teflon and not Velcro. To learn more about masters in this field, follow Eckhart Tolle and Joseph Goldstein. They say that hundreds of times throughout our day we are winning and losing - and if we can stay down the middle, in a state of equanimity, the ups and downs don't affect us at all. That is where our best work lies, and it is where mastery lies. The Legend Of Bagger Vance Clip 2 Seeing The Field 36.53: Coach the person first. 37.40: Do you want to make more money? 39.20: "When people try to change me, I just get patient!" 43.36: The process for how to change your story. Step 1) Why are you calling me? (As a coach you take notes and pick up on themes). Step 2) Give the person their OLD STORY back to them about who they have been up until this moment. For example, "I'm overly emotional." About 5 or 6 things. Step 3) Now it's time to have a different story. This is the work that you may want to do. For example; "I'm a master at managing my emotional energy." Note: Before you change WHAT you are doing, you have to change WHO YOU ARE! Step 4) Pay attention to times in your day when your old story shows up. Because all of those times, you get to do a repetition of your new story (the future you). Step 5) Add an action to your new story, for example, going for a walk, or taking a breath, close your eyes, and sit quietly. Slowly your new story will become your end game. Once you change, you don't need that story anymore and you can upgrade to a new one. 49.06: When you write your new story down, you take yourself out of looping thoughts. It's a more linear experience, there is a beginning and an end. It helps to reduce ruminating. Pretend you are helping a friend with their new story. 52.44: What are your thoughts on WINNING? Winning is equally as important as playing free! The Coaching Podcast is sponsored by The Sampson Agency - a talent entertainment and sports management company owned and operated by Tina Samara. What's New in the 303: Paratriathlete Kyle Coon's Christmas Gift, Meet Hugh MORRISTOWN, N.J. – In December, The Seeing Eye passed an important milestone when it paired Kyle Coon of Colorado Springs, Colo. with a 2-year-old black Labrador retriever named Hugh, making them the 18,000th team to graduate from the program since 1929. This milestone is reached as the non-profit approaches its 94th anniversary in January. Kyle Coon and Hugh“How amazing it is to pair Kyle with Hugh, to help guide him on all of the journeys that life takes them on. Just like every team that came before, their partnership was created with careful consideration, and support from countless individuals throughout the community,” said Seeing Eye President & CEO Peggi Howard. “We are so grateful for the graduates who choose our dogs, the puppy raisers and staff who lovingly care for our dogs, and all of the volunteers and donors who came together to play a part in creating 18,000 Seeing Eye partnerships over the last 94 years.” Listen to our podcast with Kyle getting ready for the Paralympics HERE Coon, a 31-year-old triathlete, motivational speaker and author, is a member of the U.S. Paratriathlon Resident Team in Colorado Springs. In his free time, he enjoys rock climbing, downhill skiing and playing the guitar. Hugh is Coon's third Seeing Eye dog. “From the time I was a little kid, I dreamed of being able to cruise around independently with a dog. Now I've been matched with Hugh, my third Seeing Eye Dog, and I can't begin to express how much confidence I have when we're out and about,” said Kyle Coon. “As Team USA athletes we dedicate a certain portion of our lives to being the best in our chosen sport. Hugh is dedicated to making sure we travel smoothly and safely. I'm extremely honored and humbled to be part of the 18,000th match in The Seeing Eye's history, and I can't wait to see what adventures Hugh and I experience together from here on out.” Established in 1929, The Seeing Eye provides specially bred and trained dogs to guide people who are blind. Endurance News: Worldwide survey of fitness trends for 2023 American College of Sports Medicine's Health & Fitness Journal The #1 trend for 2023, as it was for 2022, is wearable technology. Home exercise gyms was #2 for 2022 but has dropped to #13 for 2023. Fitness programs for older adults will make a comeback in 2023, breaking the top 10 at #4. THE SURVEY Every attempt was made to replicate the survey delivery as in the past 17 years. For the 2023 survey, there were 42 possible trends. Top-rated trends from previous years were included in the survey, as were potentially emerging trends identified by the editors of this Journal. The editors represent practitioners from all four sectors of the health and fitness industry (corporate, clinical, community, commercial), as well as from academia. In the survey, potential trends were identified followed by a brief explanation to offer the respondents a few details without inconveniencing them with too much reading, analysis, or interpretation. The survey was designed to be completed in approximately 15 minutes. This survey guides health and fitness programming efforts for 2023 and beyond. The first survey (1), conducted in 2006 (for predictions in 2007), introduced a systematic way to forecast trends. These surveys have been conducted annually since that time (2–16) using the same methodology. Because this is a survey of trends (and not fads), respondents were asked to first make an especially important distinction between a “fad” and a “trend.” Trend: “a general development or change in a situation or in the way that people are behaving” (https://dictionary.cambridge.org/dictionary/english/trend). Fad: “a style, activity, or interest that is very popular for a short period of time” (https://dictionary.cambridge.org/dictionary/english/fad). Responses were received from almost every continent, including the countries of Australia, Brazil, Barbados, Canada, China, Columbia, Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Japan, Jordan, India, Indonesia, Italy, Kenya, Libya, Malawi, Mexico, Nigeria, Norway, Pakistan, Peru, Philippines, Portugal, Romania, Russia, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, South Korea, Spain, Sri Lanka, Sweden, Turkey, United Kingdom, Vietnam, and the United States, among many others. Demographics of the survey respondents included 58% females (41% males) across a wide variability in ages (Figure 1), with 55% of all respondents having more than 10 years of industry experience (Figure 2) and 29% with more than 20 years of experience.
