History of South Africa podcast

Die Dorsland — the Thirstland — is part of the Kalahari that has an interesting history when it comes to pastoralists. The San didn't call it the Thirstland, for them it wasn't a barrier but part of a network of seasonal resource nodes. They would navigate the dry spans using sip-wells, inserting long, hollow reeds deep into the damp sand, use grass filters, and literally suck water up to store in hollowed-out ostrich eggshells buried along transit routes for future journeys. Around 2,000 to 2,500 years ago, a massive economic shift occurred when groups in northern Botswana acquired livestock, sheep and later cattle, transitioning from hunter-gatherers to pastoralists—becoming the Khoekhoe. Archaeological evidence indicates the Khoekhoe moved out of the northern Botswana/Zambezi region and split. One major migration route skirted the western edge of the Kalahari desert, moving down through modern-day Namibia and into the Northern and Western Cape with the Kalahari was the geographic pivot around which this entire pastoralist expansion rotated. Moving large herds of sheep and cattle through a Thirstland required moving between reliable pans and riverbeds like the Nossob, Auob, and Molopo rivers. They transformed the Kalahari from a hunter-gatherer landscape into a series of strategic grazing corridors. The Dorsland Trekkers were going to reverse that course to some extent, using the north western Botswana region to reach Namibia, and eventually, Angola. The Khoekhoe like the Voortrekkers, appreciated their freedom, moving in small extended family groups, their mobility part of their world-view. Instead of heading north west like the trekkers, they had headed south west for hundreds of years, arriving in Southern Africa about 2400 years ago. That was about the time parts of south-central Africa experienced a shift in rainfall, forests and dense woodlands expanded or contracted, the tsetse belts moved. If you were an early pastoralist whose entire wealth, diet, and social structure depended on cattle and sheep, a shifting tsetse belt was an existential threat. The arid margins of the Kalahari, the Namib, and the Karoo environments further south were too dry for the tsetse fly. The Karoo was a safe haven for livestock, the Namib too dessicated. In high-rainfall, tropical areas, grass grows fast but loses its nutritional value in winter, it becomes sourveld. In more arid regions like the fringes of the Kalahari and the Karoo the grass grows slower but retains its high mineral and protein content year-round, even when dry - it is sweetveld. To a sheep or cow, the arid south was an open buffet of incredibly nutritious feed. The Khoekhoe migration pushed into the Western Cape, where they hit a completely different climate zone, the winter rainfall region, so just as the summer rainfall area dried out, the Cape valleys were greening up. But where the trekkers moved northwards taking a decade and arrived Angola in 1880, the Khoekhoe migrations took hundreds of years. A gradual seeping south if you like. After the Khoekhoe, and before the Boers, the people of the Ngami area near the Okavango Delta were known as the Khwebe - from the word Kwe which simply means “people”. They dwelled close to a geographical anomaly in Botswana - the Khwebe Hills — Botswana is one of the flattest countries on earth. The Khwebe hills are a windy place and Khwebe mythology speaks of the Gas Bird which lives in a certain baobab near the upper Okavango River valley. If you listen closely, you can hear his hissing voice inside the tree. The mythology is linked to earlier San cosmology, where the word !Khwe means wind — and where the wind is a supernatural being.

Tracy Eire grew up far to the north in a place called St John's, Newfoundland. She has spent most of her life with one foot in the real world and the other somewhere else—maybe on Mercury, maybe in the realm of myth, or ... somewhere near Hobbiton. It's a place where stories breathe, where the old gods whisper, and where women step out of the fog wearing their strength and brilliance plainly. That is the space her art comes from. An oil and charcoal artist with a deep love for narrative painting, Tracy focuses on portraits of women who feel ancient and modern all at once. These are figures who carry storms behind their eyes, but choose the light anyway. She often paints the things she sought—or witnessed—in her youth: courage, grace, grit, and the quiet power of women who refused to disappear, even when maligned. It's no wonder her harpies wear couture. Tracy honed her skills through the Milan Art Mastery Program, but she's been creating art even longer than she's been reading comic books and novels. She is also a longtime writer of NobleBright fantasy, science fiction, and paranormal tales, and those worlds bleed into her canvases in the form of ghost hunters, fairies, sirens, and banshees like you've never seen before. Every piece she makes becomes a conversation between the storyteller and the painter in her. Sometimes those two voices argue, but ... mostly they cooperate. In every part, she's busy becoming an accomplished storyteller. What Tracy wants when she paints (and hopes for when she writes) is that her work makes people feel something strong and true. Maybe it's a spark of recognition. Maybe it's the sudden sense that someone out there sees your resilience, your mythos, your story. Her work is tied to the belief that compassion is just as legitimate a curveball as cruelty, and that good can prevail over despair. Perhaps that's because her art is built on legends, imagination, and memory—on women who didn't give up, and the enduring truth that courage still matters. Whether you meet Tracy's work on paper, on canvas, or in a book, the promise inside it is the same: she will always try to make something that speaks to you, and something that lights your way onward. Dorothy de Kok skims author bios with mild suspicion—aware they matter, but quietly convinced they are proof that even the greatest writers have writer's block when they have to write about themselves … and here we are. Her own storytelling journey began at twelve, when she attempted her first novel: an earnest and spectacularly terrible fan fiction of Enid Blyton's Magic Faraway Tree series. She finished it, reread it proudly, then lost it, which is just as well, as it was a threat to great literature. Since then, Dorothy has collected an unusually broad résumé: high school English teacher, academic editor, safe-house director, real estate agent, and hopeful but horrendous gardener. She has spent years listening to people's stories—students, clients, and survivors—and those voices sometimes find their way into her fiction. She now lives in the small Karoo village of Bedford, South Africa, where the power supply is erratic and the potholes are legislated, and where inspiration tends to wander in before the first morning screech of the hadeda. She is also, by her own admission, unofficially blacklisted from owning a library card in several provinces due to her unfortunate habit of becoming emotionally attached to borrowed books and “forgetting” to return them. “Thickly,” her Writers of the Future entry, explores what happens when the desire to be seen becomes literal—a body horror tale about enhancement, erasure, and the price of visibility in a world that demands women transform United Public Radio & UFO Paranormal Radio www.uprntalkradio.com

Rebecca is excited to chat with Dr. Kasia Van Schaik about her latest book, Women Among Monuments: Solitude, Permission, and the Pursuit of Female Genius,  published on February 17, 2026 by Dundurn Books.  https://www.dundurn.com/books_/t22117/a9781459752627-women-among-monuments : A lyrical meditation on the enduring obstacles women artists and writers face in a world still unaccustomed to recognizing female genius. What does it take for a woman to don the mantle of genius — a title long reserved for male artists? From her studies in Montreal to a dead-end job in Berlin, a midnight tour of Paris, a bankrupt art residency on the Toronto Islands, and a mysterious sculpture garden in the Karoo desert, South African—Canadian author and professor Kasia Van Schaik considers what it means for a young woman to call herself an artist and claim a creative life. Drawing on a diverse web of literary and cultural sources and artistic icons — from Georgia O'Keeffe to Ana Mendieta, Gertrude Stein to Jamaica Kincaid, Leslie Marmon Silko to Bernadette Mayer — Women Among Monuments asks, What, beyond a room of one's own, are the necessary conditions for female genius? Where does the inner flint of artistic permission come from? What is the oxygen that keeps it burning? In her memoir interwoven with incisive biographies of female solitude, constraint, and perseverance, Van Schaik blazes a trail for more inclusive artmaking practices, communities, and monuments.   Books and Authors mentioned: The Lonely City: Adventures in the Art of Being Along by Olivia Lainy Ginny Ross series (Amelia Earhart) by Heather Stemp  Voyage in the Dark; Wide Sargasso Sea by Jean Rhys We Have Always Lived in the Castle by Shirley Jackson https://www.unb.ca/faculty-staff/directory/arts-fr-english/van-schaik-kasia.html https://gillerprize.ca/scotiabank-giller-prize-spotlight-kasia-van-schaik/ https://www.instagram.com/kasia_writes https://electricliterature.com/why-i-left-men-for-books/

Loneliness, leadership, and the power of wilderness: Finding connection with Julie Robinson

Julie Robinson is an organizational psychologist who founded InVenture after her own healing journey from chronic illness. InVenture offers immersive wilderness experiences in the Karoo that support reflection and growth through embodiment, breathwork, creativity, and time in nature. What started as her personal "inner adventure" has become work that helps leaders, people in transition, and anyone stuck in hypervigilance find space to actually feel. Julie describes the experiences as sensory expeditions. Participants go completely offline for four nights and five days—phones, watches, and monitoring devices go into a box. No concept of time, no notifications, no responsibilities. Just presence in a harsh, beautiful landscape that requires deep attention. She's noticed something fascinating: women say yes to these experiences more easily, but men keep coming back year after year. The formula is simple—it works, so they repeat it. Men are late adopters of mental health processes, but once they experience something that helps them connect with themselves and other men in a space held by a woman, they return. The biggest pattern Julie sees is profound disconnection. From ourselves, our partners, our work. We've created elaborate systems of distraction to stay protected and perpetuate our isolation. People ask her constantly: how do I make friends as an adult? The loneliness is pervasive, and when men's loneliness goes unaddressed, it becomes dangerous—manifesting as control, power, violence. Men don't have mentors anymore, don't have spaces to be held and nurtured. Julie's work creates that space, where lying on a hot rock or tasting coffee mindfully or breathing in the natural world brings people back to what makes us human. In the midst of facing overwhelming odds and life threatening hazards, Simon Dyson emerged from the painful physical stress to find a new purpose for the possibilities his life holds. The Munga is a premier 1,000 km+ single-stage, semi-supported ultra-endurance mountain bike race held annually in South Africa (typically starting in Bloemfontein and ending in Wellington). Known as one of the world's toughest races, it takes 3 to 5 days of riding through the scorching Karoo desert, featuring immense heat, freezing nights, and sleep deprivation. In these extremes, Simon discovered inner passions through physical pain.
