Rebecca is excited to chat with Dr. Kasia Van Schaik about her latest book, Women Among Monuments: Solitude, Permission, and the Pursuit of Female Genius, published on February 17, 2026 by Dundurn Books. https://www.dundurn.com/books_/t22117/a9781459752627-women-among-monuments : A lyrical meditation on the enduring obstacles women artists and writers face in a world still unaccustomed to recognizing female genius. What does it take for a woman to don the mantle of genius — a title long reserved for male artists? From her studies in Montreal to a dead-end job in Berlin, a midnight tour of Paris, a bankrupt art residency on the Toronto Islands, and a mysterious sculpture garden in the Karoo desert, South African—Canadian author and professor Kasia Van Schaik considers what it means for a young woman to call herself an artist and claim a creative life. Drawing on a diverse web of literary and cultural sources and artistic icons — from Georgia O'Keeffe to Ana Mendieta, Gertrude Stein to Jamaica Kincaid, Leslie Marmon Silko to Bernadette Mayer — Women Among Monuments asks, What, beyond a room of one's own, are the necessary conditions for female genius? Where does the inner flint of artistic permission come from? What is the oxygen that keeps it burning? In her memoir interwoven with incisive biographies of female solitude, constraint, and perseverance, Van Schaik blazes a trail for more inclusive artmaking practices, communities, and monuments. A groundbreaking study led by the University of Pretoria has opened a new radio astronomy frontier, discovering the most distant hydroxyl megamaser ever detected. This feat was achieved through the use of the MeerKAT radio telescope in the Karoo, which picked up a weak radio signal from a natural “space laser” located in a violently merging galaxy more than 8 billion light-years away. Lester Kiewit speaks to Dr Thato Manamela, lead author of the study and a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Pretoria. Die Vryheidsfront Plus verwerp Graaff-Reinet in die Oos-Kaap se naamsverandering na Robert Sobukwe Town, en sê dit vee Afrikanergeskiedenis uit. Julie Robinson is an organizational psychologist who founded InVenture after her own healing journey from chronic illness. InVenture offers immersive wilderness experiences in the Karoo that support reflection and growth through embodiment, breathwork, creativity, and time in nature. What started as her personal "inner adventure" has become work that helps leaders, people in transition, and anyone stuck in hypervigilance find space to actually feel. Julie describes the experiences as sensory expeditions. Participants go completely offline for four nights and five days—phones, watches, and monitoring devices go into a box. No concept of time, no notifications, no responsibilities. Just presence in a harsh, beautiful landscape that requires deep attention. She's noticed something fascinating: women say yes to these experiences more easily, but men keep coming back year after year. The formula is simple—it works, so they repeat it. Men are late adopters of mental health processes, but once they experience something that helps them connect with themselves and other men in a space held by a woman, they return. The biggest pattern Julie sees is profound disconnection. From ourselves, our partners, our work. We've created elaborate systems of distraction to stay protected and perpetuate our isolation. People ask her constantly: how do I make friends as an adult? The loneliness is pervasive, and when men's loneliness goes unaddressed, it becomes dangerous—manifesting as control, power, violence. Men don't have mentors anymore, don't have spaces to be held and nurtured. Julie's work creates that space, where lying on a hot rock or tasting coffee mindfully or breathing in the natural world brings people back to what makes us human. The Munga is a premier 1,000 km+ single-stage, semi-supported ultra-endurance mountain bike race held annually in South Africa (typically starting in Bloemfontein and ending in Wellington). After living overseas for 25 years, Sebastian O'Keefe returned home with the dream of creating a world‑class agave spirit, using plants introduced in colonial times that are now used as cattle feed. O'Keefe told Biznews in an interview that he and his partner criss‑crossed the country testing plants and discovered rare ‘Red Agave' thriving in a dry, salty, high‑altitude place in the Klein Karoo near Ladismith. Harvested by hand, gently steamed in dairy tanks and fermented with wild yeast, the first batch of Inzalo Agave Spirits will roll off the line in the next two weeks. Deliberately not called tequila or mezcal (those names are protected), Inzalo is being positioned as the founding member of an entirely new, proudly South African category of agave spirit. He said as they started working with the spirit their ambitions grew to not only create the greatest agave spirit outside of Mexico but to create a new class of agave spirits, something that is completely unique to South Africa. And it will include two varieties, Batch One, a white spirit, and Barrel One, an aged version to be sipped slowly to cater for local tastes.
