Send us a textThe 2024 Golden Trail Series kicks off in Japan with the technically challenging Kobe Trail race, and we've got the complete preview to get you ready for all the action. This 21K mountain course packs a serious punch with nearly 7,000 feet of climbing across four increasingly difficult loops, culminating in a brutal final climb that will separate the contenders from the pretenders. What makes this race particularly fascinating is the unique intersection of skills required – pure climbing strength versus technical descending prowess. The Japanese terrain features slick roots, rocks, and challenging singletrack that caused several DNFs last year when Philemon Kiriago twisted his ankle while running in the lead pack. This technical challenge especially favors athletes with orienteering backgrounds, potentially giving an edge to competitors like Switzerland's Joey Hadron. We break down the surprisingly thin elite field (compared to typical Golden Trail events), analyzing why many top athletes chose to skip this opener and how that creates a strategic advantage for those who made the journey to Japan. On the men's side, defending champion Patrick Kipngeno returns as the clear favorite, coming off remarkable training blocks in Kenya with 120+ mile weeks. For the women, newly-signed Norda athlete Joyce Njeru faces strong challenges from technical specialists Sarah Alonso and Malin Osa in what promises to be a fascinating tactical battle.Whether you're following the Golden Trail Series all season or just love expert race breakdowns, this episode delivers insider knowledge on course specifics, athlete preparation, and bold predictions for who might take home the win. The conversation also explores broader themes in the sport including sponsor dynamics, athlete development, and the strategic importance of early-season race selection in a championship year. This episode was brought to you by Ultimate Direction, use code steepstuffpod for 25% off your next purchase on ultimatedirection.comFollow James on IG - @jameslaurielloFollow Nick on IG - @nick.tusaFollow the Steep Stuff on IG - @steepstuff_pod

In this episode, I dive into the rising trend of 'Did Not Finish' (DNF) in trail running. From my perspective as both a coach and runner, I explore how several factors are fueling this increase—like the draw of competition, the influence of social media, and the pressures of sponsorships. With financial incentives becoming more common, more athletes are taking bigger risks, which can often lead to DNFs. I also reflect on the mental side of racing, the importance of smart decision-making during events, and how social media impacts the way the trail running community views success and failure. Tune in as I break down the complex balance between ambition and sustainability in this ever-evolving sport! takeaways -The internet has contributed to more people quitting races. -Men are more likely to take risks in competitions. -Golden tickets for races create an addictive pursuit. -Increased sponsorships lead to higher competition levels. -Social media influences the way athletes approach their goals. -Visibility of success can lead to unrealistic expectations. -The pressure to perform can result in more DNFs. -Smart training and respect for the sport are crucial. -The media side of trail running is evolving. -Peer pressure can cloud personal motivations. Sound Bites "The internet has made more people DNF." "There's a science out there about risk-taking." "Getting a golden ticket is addicting." Deepak Shukla has been a runner since he was a teenager. The sport comes easily to him, although he has had his share of finishes and DNFs. The 38-year-old digital marketing manager did the Chicago Marathon, his first, in 4:40. From there, he crossed over to the dark side: ultras. Rather than completing a 50K or 50-mile race, he opted for a 100K. From there, he tackled the hundo, with mixed results. In December, he will attempt his first 200-mile race: the Centurion Winter Downs, a single loop around the south of England (He is English, after all.) Runners get 96 hours to complete this feat. We talk about his running career, the ups and downs of ultras and whether he listens to music on race day. NASCAR is headed back to Daytona this weekend for the second to last race in the regular season. Steve Letarte breaks down the strategy with team's fuel saving. With the Playoffs not far away, Tampa Timms thinks we could have a chaotic race.We saw chaos at Michigan going airborne. Letarte talks about the changes NASCAR is making with the lift-off speed to try and prevent that from happening. The Professor has a colorful model this week. At the top are: Ryan Blaney, Chase Elliott, Christopher Bell, Tyler Reddick, Chris Buescher, and William Byron. There are some Ford drivers at the top of the predictor. But there are a couple that are missing. Joey Logano is the betting favorite. But, only two top-10s in the last 10 races have him in tier 2. Another big name the Professor isn't big on is Brad Keselowski who has 11 DNFs in the last 15 races at Daytona. Kyle Larson is 19-1 to win, but there is one problem. He's never finished in the top-5 at Daytona. If you're looking for a long shot, Ricky Stenhouse Jr. and Todd Gilliland are two good options. Tampa Timms has one simple rule for betting top-10s this week. “It must be plus money." For the first time all year, there are top-20 bets. The guys have a full breakdown of drivers worth betting on from William Byron to Cody Ware. The guys also chat about drivers that you could see lead a lap.Tampa Timms is normally not a fan of stacking bets, but Letarte has an idea for him betting top Toyota.Plus, the guys quickly preview the Xfinity series and why this is the week Sheldon Creed will finally get his win. I interview Morgan Elliott, a runner specializing in short and fast races. We discuss the mindset of redlining during a race and how to determine if it's going to be a good day. We also talk about vertical kilometers (VKs) and the intense physical and mental challenges they present. Morgan shares his experience of representing the USA in international races and the camaraderie among team members. We also touch on the topic of DNFs (Did Not Finish) and the different motivations behind dropping out of a race. In this conversation, Morgan discusses his experience racing in Europe, his training strategies, and his favorite distances and types of running. He talks about the camaraderie and strategy involved in team races, the importance of recovery and preventing injuries, and the thrill of racing in challenging conditions. Takeaways Redlining during a race means pushing yourself to the limit and knowing that you have to give it your all from the start. In VK races, the first few minutes are crucial, and it's important to pace yourself and not go out too hard. Representing your country in international races is a special experience, and it's important to give it your best and be proud of wearing the national team uniform. DNFs (Did Not Finish) are a personal decision, and while some athletes drop out due to injuries or financial considerations, others choose to push through and finish the race. The camaraderie among runners, whether in the front or back of the pack, is inspiring and creates a sense of community in the sport. Racing in Europe offers a unique atmosphere with enthusiastic spectators and low-key but talented competitors. Camaraderie and strategy play a significant role in team races, while individual strategies are more common in shorter races. Recovery and injury prevention are crucial in maintaining a consistent training schedule. Racing in challenging conditions can be both thrilling and advantageous, as it can unsettle competitors and provide a mental edge. Morgan's favorite distances are three to five hours, and he enjoys technical trails with difficult footing. He is attracted to races with steep climbs and enjoys the challenge of using his hands during the run. Morgan's favorite races include Zagama and Transvulcania, which offer diverse terrain and unique cultural experiences. He is always learning and adapting his training approach, and he plans to focus on shorter races in the upcoming year. Training includes interval workouts, such as tough hill days, to improve his speed and endurance. He embraces the opportunity to race against top competitors and believes in learning from every race experience. Goals for the future include participating in the Skyrunning World Series and completing a 120-mile loop in Summit County, Colorado. Sound Bites "Race when you have a full deck." "You're redlining from minute 10." "If you don't go out four minute miles, you're not going to be in the frame." "There are so many low-key badasses that show up to European races." "I love it when people are like looking at the weather and like, oh man, it's going to rain during a race. I'm like, yes. Anything that can get in the heads of my competitors." "I did a lot of Hill workouts. I call them tough Hill days and they are mean." Rarely do we look at training for endurance or being an endurance athlete here. Today is different. This isn't a suggestion nor a recommendation. But it is a glass ceiling lift. Whatever you think is possible, is possible. There are few 78-year-olds training for 4-5 hours on a bike or spending hours a week in the pool and on their zero gravity treadmill... preparing for one of the most daunting events in triathlon. But today's guest is. My returning guest is a 78-year-old endurance athlete and she's here to share her next goal. If you walk away with one thing, I hope it is that it's never too late, you're not too old. And if you find yourself thinking, she shouldn't, you reconsider and do a self check about your own fear level instead. My Guest: Dexter Yeats, age 78, but identified as 79 for Racing, as it is My Last Year in the Female 74-79 Age Group! In the late 1970s, she began participating in triathlons. In her first race, she finished as the third female overall but was also dead last. There were few female racers back then, and no awards for women, so they received single red roses from a local grocery store. Her first Ironman was in Penticton, Canada, in 1993, where she won her age group (45-49) and qualified for KONA, finishing 10th in her age group. Life's demands limited her swimming and cycling, drawing her to Ultra Running. She ran a dozen 50-mile trail runs and attempted a few 100-mile runs, but her career as a Teamster truck driver restricted her training time, leading to some years without racing. After retiring in 2010, she moved near Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, and resumed racing at 66. She has since completed 15 more full Ironman races, totaling 16, with 10 age group wins and 5 Kona finishes. Despite a few DNFs, she remains undeterred. She has also competed in Ironman 70.3 races, qualifying for the World Championships in Australia, South Africa, and France. In 2018, she won as The World Champion in her age group (70-74) in South Africa. ASEA sponsors her, providing 'Fountain of Youth' products that help her stay healthy, recover and keep going.
