When Gregory Doran was appointed Artistic Director of the Royal Shakespeare Company in 2012, his stated ambition was for the company to stage the entire canon of plays in the First Folio, the first printed collection of Shakespeare's plays. Ten years on and having just completed his plan, with the premiere of a new production of All's Well That Ends Well, he joins Nick Ahad to reflect on the changing nature of his relationship with the Bard. Nick visits Birmingham to see the rehearsals for WASWASA – Whispers in Prayer, an art installation and performance by artist Mohammed Ali which explores the act of Islamic prayer in a secular society. Taiwan has a new cultural landmark, the Taipei Performing Arts Centre. Arts critic Debra Craine was in the Taiwanese capital for the opening of the state of the art building, designed by Dutch architects Rem Koolhaas and David Gianotten. A conversation around White Cube, the Dutch documentary by Renzo Martens that features OMA—the architecture studio behind MPavilion Monash. Hear from Congalese artist Cedart Tamasala, dutch documentary maker Renzo Martens, our 2018 architect David Gianotten, Congalese architect Arsene Ijambo and artist Eléonore Hellio in conversation with urban planner and architectural theorist Helen Runting on the making of the documentary 'White Cube'. ABOUT THE FILM White Cube follows the work of Cercle d’Art des Travailleurs de Plantation Congolaise (CATPC), a plantation workers’ cooperative based on a former Unilever plantation in Lusanga, Democratic Republic of Congo. From the boardrooms of Unilever, to elite museums and galleries across the world, to the exhausted plantations of The Congo, the film documents the CATPC’s success in ending the destructive system of monoculture on their lands with a combination of art and activism. In moving viewers between the violence of the plantation system and the aesthetic ‘civility’ of the white cube, the film highlights a fundamental question: can museums ever hope to be inclusive when no reparations have yet been paid to the plantation workers who financed—and in some cases continue to finance—the very foundations of these institutions?

MPavilion 2017 attracted international acclaim as one of the top civic spaces in the world today. Designed by Rem Koolhaas and David Gianotten of OMA, MPavilion 2017 was named by Wallpaper* as one of the top buildings that shaped culture in 2017. In an interview with Dezeen, Rem Koolhaas said, “We are happy that MPavilion can perform as a theatre of debate around the city and its development, and contribute to the ongoing civic discourse of Melbourne.” In this exclusive behind-the-scenes event, we shared the details behind MPavilion 2017 from the perspective of its many key collaborators, including: Paul Jones (OMA), Tony Isaacson (Kane Constructions), Ben Cobham (bluebottle), John Noel (Arup) and Helen Wellman, and Tract Consultants. Together they walked us through their material, technological and botanical decisions around this year’s design, providing a behind-the-scenes peek into everything that goes into designing, building and wiring up MPavilion 2017’s groundbreaking, amphitheatre-inspired temporary structure. Having a baby changes your perception of the city. Suddenly, things become less accessible: trams are difficult to lift a pram into, there’s no space in your favourite cafe to change a nappy and events happen at night while you soothe your baby to sleep—and so the trials of new parenthood are mostly screened off from public view. (Some public institutions do offer parenting facilities, but they’re usually hidden away next to the toilets.) Collaborative duo Guest, Riggs will invert this private spectacle and take us with them, by turning MPavilion 2017 into a public performance of the banalities of new parenthood, where the rotating grandstand of Rem Koolhaas and David Gianotten’s amphitheatre-style structure will raise nappy-changing to new cultural heights. Guest, Riggs take Rem Koolhaas’s and David Gianotten’s statement that the space could function as a playground literally: the floor will be given over to babies’ exploits, made possible with a series of baby-friendly interventions within the pavilion. Across four events in our summer program, a rolling line-up of speakers will address the exclusion of parents from cultural events and the architecture of new parenthood by creating a space for parents and babies. (Non-parents welcome too!) The fourth and final instalment of this gathering, ‘CITY’, will focus on the cityscape of parenthood: How can we improve experiences of parenthood, citywide? And what are the major infrastructural and cultural changes that could improve parent amenity? Carla Pascoe will discuss the history of motherhood in Melbourne; and Carolyn Whitzman will speak about how urban planning might better accommodate babies and parents in the city. We’ll also be celebrating the first birthday of Stephanie Guest’s baby! This event is proudly supported by Baby Rest.

With the long-held title of ‘world’s most liveable city’, Melbourne regularly attracts international interest as an economically viable space for exploration. In the eighties and nineties, an appetite for the international architectural elite drew the likes of I.M. Pei and Kisho Kurokawa to Melbourne. More recently, OMA—and its research arm, AMO—turned its attention towards Australia, describing it as the next frontier of architectural opportunity and possibility. In Melbourne, we’re fortunate to possess a vibrant local design community, proud of its pursuits of innovation and excellence—but for whom the question of Melbourne’s evolving identity also generates impassioned debate. Does OMA’s recent interest in Australia foretell a new era of ‘starchitecture’ in Melbourne, and what does this mean for the preservation of local culture, architectural or otherwise? Peter Corrigan and Robin Boyd were pioneers in translating international design to a local sensibility—how can Melbourne continue to benefit from global knowledge and experience? And what can we glean from the successes and failures of other cities? In short: are prestigious international firms usurping or supporting existing networks of local architectural culture? These are just some of the questions PROCESS—an independent public forum on architecture and design—will ask in its annual end-of-year debate, this time inside MPavilion 2017, designed by Rem Koolhaas and David Gianotten of OMA and intended as a space for public debate. Speakers include: Andy Fergus, urban designer at City of Melbourne and co-director of Melbourne Architours; Joachim Clauss, associate director at Bates Smart; Lisa Gerstman, co-curator of PROCESS, EmAGN committee member and member of the RAP Working Group; Mark Raggatt, ARM Architecture co-director; Nicole Allen, senior designer at Grimshaw and masters studio leader at MSD; and Sarah Lynn Rees, a Palawa woman descending from the Plangermaireener people of north-east Tasmania, Charlie Perkins scholar, director of Indigenous Architecture and Design Victoria (IADV) and project manager of MPavilion’s inaugural regional program.
