In her latest book The Patriarchs: How Men Came to Rule, award-winning science journalist Angela Saini explores the science and history of male dominance, arguing that patriarchy is neither natural nor inevitable, but rather a fragile system that is constantly remade and reasserted. Saini joined Karen Pickering for a bold conversation interrogating why, how and where patriarchy manifests and persists. She discussed the ways patriarchies are established and evolve over time, explored matrilineal systems that have been subverted by colonialism, and looked beyond old narratives to understand why the patriarchy persists today. The international swimming federation, FINA, have voted to stop transgender athletes from competing in women's races if they have gone through any part of male puberty. The new policy means that transgender women who want to compete as women will now be required to have completed transition by the age of 12, making the vast majority of them ineligible to compete in female categories. Former British swimmer Sharon Davis says she's proud of FINA, while some trans groups and trans athletes criticise the decision. We spoke to the American trans athlete Fallon Fox who is a mixed martial arts fighter, and Karen Pickering, former swimming world champion.

CN: This episode contains discussion of sexual assault and rape, homicide and vigilantism.Hello there everyone! I've tinkered with the format of the show this week, quite by accident. However, it turns out I like the tinkering and I'm curious to know what you think about it. New format might look something like this: Intro, followed by a short segment called SOMETHING TO THINK ABOUT in which my guest and I unpack something that's widely accepted as being standard or traditional but is probably pretty indefensible when it comes down to it, and then a much longer and meatier segment talking about a more specific issue. This might be something that's happened in the news that week or something we've read about or an idea we've had or even the particular specialty of the guest in question (for example, in Aja Barber's episode we would have devoted this segment to discussing her work around fashion and sustainability). Finally, each episode will end with a very short segment on something that's bringing joy or working positively in the world. My guest this week is hotline regular, KAREN PICKERING. She's a feminist and a community builder, and is currently writing her third book THE MOTHER OF ALL SHOCKS, a book about the industry of motherhood and all the ways we are being failed by it while encouraged to enter it. She's one of my besties! Here's how the episode looks:SOMETHING TO THINK ABOUT: Karen used to work at the Registry of Births, Deaths and Marriages, and we talk here about the cultural practice of women changing their names after marriage to men. Why is this still happening? Where does it come from? And why is 'choice' such an illusion?THE MEATY MIDDLE: There's a heavy content note for this segment, because the topic is pretty full on. A tiktok popped into my feed the other night, featuring a man who spent 19 and a half years in prison. The reason he first entered the system (and stayed in it, as so often happens with the prison industrial complex)? When he was 12, he murdered another boy in his neighbourhood as an act of retaliation for the boy sexually assaulting his sister. What disturbed me about the tiktok was both in how unrepentent he still was about the crime and how enthusiastically so many of the comments supported him. It struck me as a really good example of how sexual assault and rape is only seen as real or legitimate if men take it on themselves to avenge women - because when women come forward with their own testimonies of this violence, we are so often disbelieved and further abused, with urgings to reconsider 'destroying' a man's life. Karen and I have a long discussion here about vengeance, testimony and who gets to be championed in situations like this. We touch on 'Promising Young Woman', the Brock Turner rapist trial and the documentary series, 'I'll Be Gone In The Dark'.POUR SOME SUGAR ON ME: Finally, in the joyfulness close out, Karen and I talk briefly about Ted Lasso and the immense pleasure this show is giving so many people. It's such a wonderful exploration of community and kindness, and it dissects toxic masculinity so well while demonstrating what POSITIVE masculinity looks like!Don't forget to let me know what you think of this format!Follow Karen on Instagram: @karenpickeringEmail: bigsisterhotline@gmail.comInstagram: @clementine_fordPatreon: www.patreon.com/clementineford****Support lines:LIFELINE: 13 11 141800RESPECTSupport this show http://supporter.acast.com/clementineford-bigsisterhotline. Wednesday's Child is thrilled to have had the very special opportunity to get a window into the world of one of Britain's most successful ever swimmers, Karen Pickering MBE. In this podcast, she opens up about her own challenges, how she feels (and felt) about her weight, her body and food – and how she found a way to master the frustrations of seeking recovery from something which felt beyond her control. Among the areas you'll hear discussed in this episode are: How does a female athlete maintain a healthy relationship with nutrition and exercise, while pushing herself to the absolute limits? Does the poolside environment lend itself to more risk of eating disordered behaviours? What role does courage and confidence play in recovery – be it from an illness, or accident? Can you ever learn to manage the demons of perfectionism in a realistic and constructive way? Having a baby changes your perception of the city. Suddenly, things become less accessible: trams are difficult to lift a pram into, there’s no space in your favourite cafe to change a nappy and events happen at night while you soothe your baby to sleep—and so the trials of new parenthood are mostly screened off from public view. (Some public institutions do offer parenting facilities, but they’re usually hidden away next to the toilets.) Collaborative duo Guest, Riggs will invert this private spectacle and take us with them, by turning MPavilion 2017 into a public performance of the banalities of new parenthood, where the rotating grandstand of Rem Koolhaas and David Gianotten’s amphitheatre-style structure will raise nappy-changing to new cultural heights. Guest, Riggs take Rem Koolhaas’s and David Gianotten’s statement that the space could function as a playground literally: the floor will be given over to babies’ exploits, made possible with a series of baby-friendly interventions within the pavilion. Across four events in our summer program, a rolling line-up of speakers will address the exclusion of parents from cultural events and the architecture of new parenthood by creating a space for parents and babies. (Non-parents welcome too!) The third instalment of this gathering, DISTRICT, will focus on parenting communities—both online and IRL. The council-assigned parents’ groups, Facebook groups, the so-called village it takes to raise a child, the public library, the pool and the museum—what is the role of community in developing spaces for parents and babies? Guest speaker Karen Pickering will talk about her role as the architect of a very special online parenting community, leading interactive community-building exercises, while Clementine Ford will reflect on parenting in public and the need for greater community involvement—particularly by men. A number of Melbourne Museum representatives will also join the line-up to discuss baby-friendly community spaces: Murphy Peoples, experience developer; Scott Parker, senior exhibition designer for permanent exhibition Ground Up: Building Big Ideas, Together; Jo Pritchard, senior graphic designer for the Children’s Gallery; and Naomi Fogel, senior exhibition designer for the Children’s Gallery.
