My guest today is driven by curiosity and inspires others to cultivate it as well. Dr. Deborah Berebichez is the first Mexican woman to graduate from Stanford University with a PhD in Physics. She also completed two postdoctoral fellowships at Columbia University's Applied Math and Physics Department and at NYU. She uses her education and background to make science approachable to a wide range of audiences. Debbie was co-host of Discovery Channel's Outrageous Acts of Science TV show. She also appears as an expert on the Travel Channel, NOVA, CNN, FOX, MSNBC and numerous international media outlets. Currently she is the Chief Data Scientist at data science training company provider Metis where she leads the creation and growth of data science training opportunities. She is committed to help women and minorities follow STEM careers. When you hear her story, you'll realize how her curiosity drove her to confront adversity and follow her calling. In today's episode we talk about her fascinating story, her work and she gives us specific lessons to start cultivating curiosity. B”H Is “Giving BACK” an expression we should be using? In this episode Yael questions the use of the phrase “giving back” due to its subtle implication that making $ is “taking” money. What is a different and more Jewish way that we could think about this? Yael tells us. On this episode of Bold Leaders in Learning, Brandon will be joined by Debbie Berebichez, Chief Data Science at Metis. The two will discuss what exactly data science is and what we mean when we talk about being a data science, plus Debbie's television work making sure that science is accessible to all who are interested .
Debbie Berebichez is a physicist and data scientist who dedicates her life to fostering women’s careers in STEM. Debbie and I got together over zoom to talk about her journey, and her experience as a woman in one of the most male dominated fields of academia.
Did curiosity kill the cat? Perhaps. A claim could be made that a LACK of curiosity can (and should!) kill an analyst's career! On this episode, Dr. Debbie Berebichez, who, as Tim noted, sorta' pegs out on the extreme end of the curiosity spectrum, joined the show to explore the subject: the societal norms that (still!) often discourage young women from exploring and developing their curiosity; exploratory data analysis as one way to spark curiosity about a data set; the (often) misguided expectations of "the business" when it comes to analytics and data science (and the imperative to continue to promote data literacy to combat them), and more! This week, Hugo speaks with Debbie Berebichez about the importance of critical thinking in data science. Debbie is a physicist, TV host and data scientist and is currently the Chief Data Scientist at Metis in NY.In a world and a professional space plagued by buzz terms like AI, big data, deep learning, and neural networks, conversations around skill sets and less than productive programming language wars, what has happened to critical thinking in data science and data thinking in general? What type of critical thinking skills are even necessary as data science, AI and machine learning become even more present in all of our lives and how spread out do they need to be across organizations and society?
